iPad (4 Viewers)

It's not made for most hardcore uses. If that is what you want get something else.
Was talking to a neighbor that is getting one for his parents. He stated it's the perfect device for people who don't understand technology. Apparently his parents struggle with every computer they have just to get a browser going and so this would make his life a lot easier supporting them.I can see the point as my mom struggles with the few things she does on the computer. Much easier to have a limited device to make life easier for them to just consume media. It might not be the best but I can see where he's coming from on that angle.
I'm pretty high up on the tech slob group, there are many more ######ed then myself about it, but try it for a day. That is all I ask.

I can't reply to dragon due to the reply problem, but all I can say to him is use it for a whole day and then criticize it.
I have two co-workers that will be bringing theirs in on Monday. I can tell you it doesn't fit any roles we need it for right now at it's current price. Regardless if it feels good in my hands or not it just doesn't perform the functions I'd want even lounging around outside or in the house. I won't say I will not buy one but not feeling it right now. I want a real OS in the same form factor. I was hoping when the rumors started it was a Macbook in there. Although my neighbor made me realize who they are targeting and it makes sense. So when the price comes down or Version 2 is out I might pick one up.

Dear zDragon, Card Trader and the one or two other guys with an obvious agenda:We get it. You don't like this device. You wont buy one. You think others are better. This probably isn't the tread for you. Cant you post elsewhere? Thanks.
Not sure I've said much confrontational in this thread about the iPad...
Was this before or after you (incorrectly) suggested I couldn't afford it, called me Carrot Top, or just suggested anyone liking the iPad was a buffoon, you hypocrite?

Oh, a major Internet company! That makes sense...those companies never let you mention their names. ...and since you decided to get personal...1) While there's nothing wrong with manual labor, working as a cart guy/greeter for Wal-Mart does not make you an employee at a major Internet company just because they opened a Verizon kiosk.2) As your reading comprehension isn't the best, I didn't state that I couldn't. I stated that I didn't. In case your sarcasm comprehension is at the same level as your reading comprehension, I didn't really let the haters sway me...I simply planned my day poorly.3) "Anyway" isn't a noun, it's an adverb. So pluralizing it is neither necessary nor grammatically correct.
I would have been far more careful with my post if I knew the Grammar Police were on patrol this evening. My apologies.Don't be discouraged because you can't afford it now, just save if it's something you really feel you need.BTW, point #1 was funny. Thumbs up to you, Carrot Top!
Yes, the "he's poor" angle is drawing rave reviews. Keep hammering away at it like Stephon Marbury trying to sell shoes. It'll stick by the end of the century. It's not that I feel I NEED it. It's that I think I'll ENJOY it. By all means, if hanging out in a thread designed for people who ENJOY iPads...while you clearly do not...is your idea of fun, just say so.

Like I said in the last post I will play with a couple on Monday. I can tell you I wouldn't be happy with the low mem models so I'd be dropping 800 plus the keyboard. Plus the unanswered question about daylight reading and battery life with the brightness needs to be answered. I'd like to know exactly how the performed the 10hr tests.

I read an interesting piece in Time magazine on the IPad that I think is spot on:

The big difference is it's a machine where people don't create but view content. When we need to create something, we will almost always use our computers and all of their horsepower. But sometimes we just want to surf the internet, watch a movie, read a magazine or play a game, etc. And to have the device be super portable where we can move it to the bedroom, couch, on the deck etc is awesome.

I sense we are watching a switch happen here. And a few years from now instead of the family having a bunch of laptops and desktops, we will have 1 good desktop in the house and many portable machines like the Ipads when we just want to read and be entertained. Creators of content will always demand the desktop.

Looking at the magazine demos on these things gets me very excited here.

I totally want an iPad. As a graphic artist, it is the perfect tool for me to show clients the work I have done for them. For examples, if I have five logos for them, I could just slide each five across the screen, one at a time. It seems like it would be a lot handier than a laptop. Also, I love to read...I run through books quickly. While nothing will ever replace an actual book in my hands, it would be great to carry the just the iPad with several books on it when on vacation and be able to check my emails. This, of course, is opposed to carrying 3-4 books, a laptop, plug, mouse, etc. The only reasons I'm not springing for one right now is the lack of a USB port and no Flash support.
The iPad has a very good paint app that got rave reviews on the iPhone you should check out. My son uses it on his touch I be readinlieve it is called Brushes.

I really do think this simple quote sums the iPad up pretty well.

Another question. Is the instant messenger built into the core so I could be say Reading a web forum while editing photos AND get an IM?

This is pretty much how I see it. The thing is that there is a large market of laptop users that use their laptops for entertainment alone. This group is going to switch over to a tablet the next time they purchase a device like this.

Thanks. But I don't mean running pandora as an app. I mean running the browser with pandora open and playing in one tab while you have another tab open working on Gmail. It can do that can't it?

J
I know what you are asking but it does not really have tabbed browsing. You can open multiple pages, but they are not really open at the same time.ETA This is the same as the iPhone. If you can do it on the iPhone you can do it here.
The browser doesn't have tabs?

J
Joego to the 1:20 mark of the Safari video

no tabs but organizable pages

I have found something annoying. I can't reply to posts with lots of quoted text. There is no scroll bar in the reply box for me on the iPad. Maybe I'm an idiot but it's annoying me so if any other ipaders are experiencing this let me know what I need to do.
Same problem as on an iPhone...
Yep. I've noticed that too.
I've noticed this on the iPhone also -- I don't think the iPhone OS (including iPad) displays scroll bars on HTML textareas within pages. I *think* this is by design, though -- I have noticed that I can scroll around inside the reply box by dragging with two fingers instead of one.

. Taking an iPad to Taiwan with me would be pointless because I wouldn't be able to transfer my photos and video to it like I can with a laptop.
iPad camera connection kitThe iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad and the Camera Connection Kit support standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.

Nice add-on. WOuld have rather had a USB and SD slot though. Seeing that this will read RAW is also nice but pushes the usable device up to 800+ to hold the images and other stuff you'd want on it to travel.

Supposedly 700,000 of these were sold on the opening day. That's insane. I think everyone can agree that this thing needs multitasking, USB ports, support for flash, etc. But let's not kid ourselves. 700,000 stood in line all day to get this thing. This is going to be (or already is) a game-changer. Maybe the other tablets created will catch up, but in the 3-4 months they need to have something cool to compete, Apple will likely be rolling out the upgrades everyone is demanding. Although I think betting against google in the long run might be unwise, I suspect Apple grabs a bunch of this new market for at least the next 5 years.

Cloud computing is where we're headed and Apple is looking to make the iPad a synonymous term, like iPod is to music.

But for me... I need flash and USB. Went with a $300 Asus netbook instead.

Posting from it now. Very rough first impressions:

It's smaller in my hands than i expected it would be.

The keyboard will definitely take some getting used to but works pretty well, especially in landscape format. But i can see the keyboard being a limitation for sure, at least at the outset.

Device has a nice feel to it. Display is beautiful.

More later...
That's what she said..

Well, you are being a D-I-C-K about the whole thing. All we are simply saying is that it's way overpriced for less functionality. Is that so difficult to understand? I'm trying to reason as to why this would be more useful than a laptop. I'm not sure you could classify it anything other than a niche device that only the truly devoted would buy.And for those of you who say try it for a day how could I possibly do that before buying it? Does Apple have a try-before-you-buy program I'm unaware of? Maybe one of you could loan it to me for day or so? Any takers?
Okay, I'll try to be less confrontational about it, and I understand your point. I get it. I really do. This Apple product is overpriced.However...it is not overpriced to the point where it's going to affect anyone's life. It's also clearly not overpriced to the point where it has affected sales. In short, WHO CARES?

Now, as I've tried to be civil, please address the point that I and several others in this thread have made to you several times:

There are plenty of iPad bashing threads. This is a thread clearly posted by the OP for people who are clearly already sold on the thing. Why must you insist on peeing all over the thread? That's what set me off in the first place. It's like a Steelers fan wandering in to a "2010 New Orleans Saints World Champions" thread and trying to start a debate about which was the better team.

Have you used it?
My brother bought one so I was able to play around with one for a few minutes. Can't really give you a detailed review but its ideal for somebody who just needs something light and convenient to surf the web and do other basic things with it. If you need something hardcore, than the iPad isn't for you. You can't play WOW on it but you can play WW.

Agreed with all of this. It's great for consuming and not so great for creating. But I think these days most of us mostly consume (outside of work).

Best solution I've got on this so far is remote control of my desktop computer via the iTeleport app. Not ideal but it's something for now.

Question re NYTimes: I think the app just works like a web page where you need internet to navigate it. Is there a way for me to get the Times fully downloaded each morning so i can read on the subway?

Cry much? It's a legit question. If you can't answer just don't post.
If you quote one more time he won't be able to reply to this block of quotes.

Another question -- any thoughts on whether there's a way to tether over the bluetooth connection to a blackberry or other phone in order to get internet other than via Wifi?

Is it true that the iPad doesn't support Flash player and therefore doesn't load a bunch of websites correctly?

Yes he does. On his iPad.

Sadly, yes. I haven't come across this problem yet myself. I use the ESPN app so haven't had a problem running their video. Same for the Times.

I don't think anyone ever got that to work with iPod Touch (limited bluetooth capabilities) so I would think iPad would be in the same boat. Best bet seems to use a phone with wifi hotspot capability. Palm Pre, rooted Droid, jailbroken iPhone...

I've noticed a ton of sites that didn't work for my iPod touch working for my iPad. Espn is one of those -- videos on their website (not app) loading fine surprisingly right in the browser.

Did anybody take the ipad outdoors? I am not looking to bash anyone or the product. On a nice sunny day, I think it would be great to take this device or one like it outdoors to read/surf/etc. So does this thing work outdoors on a sunny day?
At first it was tough to see in direct sunlight. I turned up the brightness and it was a whole lot better. Obviously none of these devices will be ideal in direct sunlight.
FWIW, my Macbook is the same way.

Ya, same thing happened at launch in the iPhone thread. Bunch of dudes kicking, screaming and showing us all the WinMo junk that was 'better for our money'.

Maybe deep down they think they're thwarting iPad sales, I dunno. :loco:
Windows Mobile? Our company is moving a specific group of people towards that due to a specific app. I've hopefully removed myself from the list. I'm not giving up my Droid and I'd hate to have to carry 2 phones.
