I like Apple's model actually. It rewards those who are patient with a better product. They spin it very well also. Let's not pretend that Apple's release of the same product with more features is because the technology had improved between March and April....that's just silly. 3G's been around for a while....it's not new.
That is not what happened in this case. Both models were announced at the same time in January. Wifi-only had an early-April delivery date, 3G had a late-April delivery date.
Everyone who bought a wifi could have waited for the 3G if they wanted that version. It was not a secret - both models were advertised on apple at the same time/place - with different price points.
Anyone who says they did not know the 3G was being delivered in late April - simply did not look at the three models right below the wifi models.
I do expect an upgraded version of the iPad late this year, prior to the christmas rush - but that may be as simple as the new OS, which will include multi-tasking, and maybe a camera. But I don't think the upgrade will be significant, nor make the 1st version obsolete.
I think the folks who will lose the most are actually the folks who get the 2nd generation product - since I expect bigger upgrades for the 3rd generation - faster, more storage, more features. 1st generation owners, and new owners, will get the 3rd generation product, while 2nd generation owners won't be happy about shelling out another $500-700.
