These are the list of things I want to do. I already have the iphone 5, and I'll be getting an apple TV soon. What I need to decide on is what ipad I want (b/e ipad mini/ipad 3/ipad 4). Any advice on model and size?

[*]Have my music library (itunes) from my laptop (non mac) hooked up to my sound system (receiver, tv, surround sound, etc) wirelessly and controlled via iphone/ipad

[*]mirror ipad to TV

[*]facetime using ipad & have the screen on my television

[*]wirelessly upload all pictures/video I take with iphone to cloud

[*]regular ipad stuff (surfing, apps, etc)

Also, is the ipad refurb market reliable?
pity pre-black friday bump
If you're just trying to decide between the mini and the 3 or 4, I'd go with the 4. Better all around hardware and display. I'd only consider the mini if you need the smaller size (note: it's got the same processor as the 2).
Thx...I meant ipad 2 vs. 3 (4 isn't out yet)...but assume you knew that when you answered
The current generation is the 4, which is basically the 3 ("the iPad") with upgrades.
This really isn't true. The 4 is Double the CPU speed, Double the graphics speed and has full LTE compatibility. The 2 vs 3 really depends on if you want the Retina display or not. Performance wise the 2 and 3 are exactly the same. Unlike the difference in power from the 3 to 4.Personally, I wouldn't touch any iPad outside of the 4 at this point. Once developers start using the extra graphics and CPU power for more advanced games they will lag on the older hardware.
I own an ipad 3 and have the 4G LTE model. The 4G LTE is screaming fast @ 30+mbs and the retina display is very nice. I upgraded to IOS 6 and SIRI is now available.

My wife has an ipad 2 3G and while it suits her fine, the 3G is markedly slower than the ipad 3 and the display is nowhere near as nice.

If I was buying a new model, I would doubtless buy a 4, but there is nothing that compels me to upgrade at the moment. Faster speeds are always nice, but I haven't found anything lacking with the 3.

What is the best way to protect an iPad for children? If kids aged 4-10 are using it sometimes, what is my best bet?
 teach them not to throw it?I have a 6 and 8 yo who use/handle ipads with no problems. They are not running through the house with them - usually just sitting somewhere when they are using them.
Yup. Our 6 and 3 year old boys know they don't touch the iPads unless they're butts are planted on the sofa. No need to waste money on a case.

I am getting an ipad for my 12-year-old niece for XMas. This will be her first tablet, she is very responsible although my 8-year-old niece is probably the wild card here.

Anyway...should I get the standard or go mini? What do you think? I thought mini because she might be the first at school to have it or whatever, no idea.

Does she have a cell phone? What kind?

Well that was the thing, iphone vs ipad. She has a ipod, ####ty cell phone and not sure what else.

It's a 4 - which is to say, they have taken the 3 and tweaked it a little. You may still find some of the 3 models at retail stores, but I would get a 4 if I was starting fresh today (unless there's a handsome discount). I was speaking mostly to the fact that I won't upgrade from a 3; there is little to gain.ETA: http://ipad.about.com/od/Tablet_Computers_eReaders/a/iPad-3-vs-iPad-4.htm

Can anyone tell me if you can sync apps from two iphones onto one ipad? The wife and I are getting an ipad and want to put both of our apps on there. TIA.

Ok thank you. I guess I need to make sure I understand the exact model numbers so I make sure I end up with a 4 instead of a 3.

Double the GPU and CPU is not tweaked a little. This makes the 3 look ancient and is an actual upgrade. The 2 to 3 was tweaked a little basically to support the higher screen res. The 2 and 3 benchmark identical. The 4 is twice the speed of the two ancient ones.

Thinking of bringing the first iPads under our roof. Was looking into getting the kids (almost 7 and 5) new Nintendo DS's since theirs are a few years old. Then realized that 3DS is a couple hundred bucks and games are ~$40 where the iPad mini is $330 with games they like from free to a couple bucks. Not to mention they usually ask to play with our iPhones before they grab their DS's.

So, that's got me thinking about getting the kids a couple iPads. Its funny because as much as they'd like to have one they've asked for everything but because I think they think of it as too expensive or for adults. I think this could be their first super crazy happy Red Rider BB Gun type xmas reaction too. (Like me with the Atari 2600, NES, etc)

What do you guys think about the iPad mini vs getting an older version full size iPad for kids? We thought about an iPod but think its too small so thought of mini... should we go full way to an iPad 2 or 3? What are your guys' kids' likes and dislikes of different iPads?

Thanks!

I just recently purchased the ipad mini, and I love the unit. My wife has the full version and I never liked the size and having to hold it. I really think that the new ipad mini is a lot more comfortable to hold and the screen size is just right. My 13 year old prefers my ipad to the one my wife has because he also likes the feel of it.

Alot of people say 7.9" is the ideal size.

But it's not exactly shocking that the wife still chose the bigger one.

Bit pricey but The Otter Box defender series case has saved our iPad more than a handful of times.
The
:goodposting: we were in the apple store with my 6 & 4 year old boys. They were playing with the minis and the first thing I noticed was how perfect the size was for them.

Had my first chance with a mini yesterday and I really like the size. I'm still good with my first gen iPad but would consider getting the mini if I didn't have any tablet already.

It's between the mini and iPad2 for us. As a shared gift for the kids who love my wife's iPad3. Target will have iPad2 for $399 + $50 gift card which in my mind makes it a no brainer over the mini.

Any anyone experienced battery issues with the 3? Mine all of a sudden drains much more quickly than it used to (with no apps running)....and I just charged it all night and it only got to 75% full.

Finally got my first tablet, an ipad mini(early xmas gift)

It's ridiculous how awesome this thing is, I've opened my laptop twice since I got it a few weeks ago.

Ended up going with the 4. Thanks for the help everyone

I just let it sit for a hour....dropped 10% of its battery life. I've turned Dow the brightness....4g is off...nothing else running.

So the iPad 3 was released this March, and it is already considered ancient? Wow. They really do have folks conditioned to keep shelling out money repeatedly for their products don't they?

I was reading a Tech article this morning that point to Tim Cook moving Apple to a 6 month release schedule to keep more in line with the industry. They pointed out that his specialty is the pipeline. Would be a very interesting change for Apple.

Uh oh, looks like I waited a couple days too long to order the iPad mini for Christmas.

Local stores are sold out and shipping from Apple won't get it here until after Christmas.

Any suggestions for other places I might find a couple?

Otherwise we'll just go with other gifts and/or wait for birthdays, by which time the next one will prob be out.

Sold out everywhere, people just laugh when you ask.Found one on Craigslist for $375 and picked it up tonight though.

Walmart slashed iPad 3 price 16GB starting today from $499 to $399. The trick I guess will be to find a store that has some in stock. I called one near my work and the lady on the phone had no clue what I was talking about, and didn't really know the model differences. Guess I'll be hitting up some stores in person after work...

Just think in about 4-6 months we will have the iPad mini 2nd gen with a retina display. I'd hate to be one of the people buying the current version. Once they get retina in it I'll have one next to my couch.

Got Apple TV for Christmas....just hooked it up. Pretty sweet, synched with my iPad. Just watched 15 minutes of the SEC Champ from YouTube....and we're going to watch Ted this weekend, which we downloaded already from iTunes after not having time to watch on a trip.

Anyone have any cool things to use it for?
