Is the Red Zone Channel now going to be on NFLN every Sunday? (1 Viewer)

In the news about the NFL Network reaching a deal with Comcast, I keep reading that now the Red Zone Channel will be offered. Will that be a separate channel, or will NFLN just air the Red Zone Channel content from Sunday Ticket from 1-7 p.m. each week?

To be honest, I hardly watch anything on Sunday Ticket any more except the Red Zone Channel. If that becomes part of NFLN's regular line-up, I will drop Sunday Ticket (and maybe even DirecTV, if I can get FIOS) in a heartbeat.

Does anyone have more info on how the NFL plans to spin off/package the Red Zone Channel?

Not sure but I would love to know as well. With yet another price increase on the price of the ticket I have been thinking about dropping it, but if this happens that will pretty much make it a lock to drop it unless they come way down in price.

NFL, Comcast Deal Will Include “On Demand” Content

Posted by Mike Florio on May 19, 2009, 9:50 a.m.

The NFL has officially announced, via that dinosaur known as a “press release,” its agreement with Comcast.

The deal includes a feature not previously disclosed. Per the release, Comcast customers will now have access to a “robust suite of NFL content On Demand, including game highlights, game replays, the ‘best’ of NFL Films, players and coaches interviews, local team highlights, and other NFL programming whenever they want a piece of the action.”

But NFL Network still won’t appear on Comcast’s basic service package. Instead, NFLN will move from a current digital tier to the “Digital Classic” package, which will result in the content being available to two-thirds of all Comcast customers — a major upgrade over the current availability of NFLN.

The launch is scheduled to happen by August 1.

“We are very pleased that NFL Network and other NFL content will be widely distributed in millions of more homes on Comcast’s service,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “We look forward to having NFL Network’s coverage of training camps and the preseason showcased this summer on Comcast. NFL Network is the only TV channel devoted exclusively to football 24/7, 365 days a year.”

Comcast and the NFL also agreed to take immediate steps to discontinue all pending legal disputes between the two companies.

UPDATE: The deal also includes, as previously reported, the Red Zone Channel, when the Red Zone Channel becomes available. Under the new deal between the NFL and DirecTV, it will be available not later than 2012.

So, bottom line, if I get NFLN now, I'll still be getting it. At least that's how I'm understanding it....

I'm understanding it as the Red Zone Channel will not be available on NFLN until 2012

Isn't the Red Zone Channel on NFLN on Sundays currently or is that called something else? The Sirius radio thing that is on during Sundays game? What is the difference between that and this Red Zone product?

The current speculation is that since NFLN is being moved to Comcast's "Digital Classic" tier, the Red Zone channel, when launched, will be placed in Comcast's Digital Sports tier in place of NFLN.

I just wish NFL would stop their exclusive dealings with the sunday ticket. Im betting it wouln't be $300 or whatever they are charging this year if Cable/Dish had it too.

The Sunday Ticket being on DirecTV and not cable is a function of the Sunday network deals (FOX and CBS) and the money contributed to that by the local affiliates and not because the NFL really wants to give anyone with relatively low market penetration an exclusive. If you read the articles on the Comcast deal you'll see it mentioned in some of them that the NFL negotiated to obtain he networks' permission to include the RedZone channel in this round of TV deals. I would guess that the NFL is using this channel in order to try to alleviate the fear that the local affiliates have that no one is going to watch the local broadcasts if given more choices so maybe five to ten years down the road they can still get most of the network money and also expand the coverage of this package.

saw an add for this today on nfl network. is it a go for this year & is it the same redzone channel as DTV. if so.....

I didn't get the Sunday Ticket this year, but really the only thing I watched on it was the Red Zone channel. If this will be available on NFLN that would be AWESOME.

The Redzone channel is fantasy players best friend. I could do without Sunday Ticket if all I had was the RedZone channel.

The NFL channel will have its own version of the red zone channel, different host than the one on direct TV. It will be made availible to all cable companies that carry NFLN. Currently only comcast has picked up the redzone channel, so if you have concast it will be availible as part of the sports entertainment pakage for 6 bucks a month. If you don't have comcast, you won't have red zone as of now.

so DTV won't be picking it up in all likelihood. however, this gives me awesome leverage for next year. i'm only paying $150 this year, so don't really mind keeping it.

I think that's correct. You would need the NFL channel.....if you don't have that now, I don't think you're getting the Red Zone Channel.

Well, recently Comcast moved the NFL Network from their sports package to a regular digital package, so many Comcast subscribers (myself included) now get NFL Network even though we don't subscribe to the sports package. Does anyone else know if we'll be getting the Red Zone Channel along with NFLN, or will that require a subscription to the sports package?

Do we assume that NFL Network will run its own programming on Sundays, and that this Red Zone channel will be its own channel.

Or this Red Zone channel will air on NFL Network?

I can see DTV losing a good number of Sunday Ticket subscribers once the wheres and hows of this gets figured out. Displaced fans will still need Sunday Ticket, but the fantasy geeks should find everything they need on this new offering.

I will miss the 30 minute shortcuts if I ever choose to drop Sunday Ticket.

NFL RedZone cable channel cutting it close

Just four weeks before the planned launch of the NFL RedZone channel, only one cable operator has agreed to carry it, thrusting the league into yet another round of carriage battles with the cable industry.

When the channel launches Sept. 13, the first Sunday of the regular season, only Comcast, the country’s biggest cable operator, plans to roll out the channel on its sports and entertainment tier, which has close to 2 million subscribers.

So far, little is known about the fledgling channel, which is mirrored after the Red Zone Channel from DirecTV’s popular Sunday Ticket service — right down to the same name, though with a different structure. Both services are tailored for fantasy football enthusiasts, providing live look-ins to the league’s Sunday afternoon games, plus updated statistics and scoring plays.

The league originally planned to launch its NFL RedZone in 2012, but that schedule was accelerated in May when the NFL extended its deals with CBS and Fox by two years (See SportsBusiness Journal, May 18-24). The NFL’s Sunday afternoon broadcast partners needed to give the league permission to use its game productions for a cable-only red zone channel.

The league’s NFL RedZone will be produced by NFL Network and overseen by President Steve Bornstein. It is separate from DirecTV’s channel, which is part of its NFL Sunday Ticket service. The NFL is building a set for the channel at its NFL Network studios and has yet to settle on a host or other talent to work on the show. With distribution at launch expected to be low, the league isn’t expected to attach much advertising to the channel.

But distribution looks to be an issue. So far, all cable operators besides Comcast have passed. Several cable executives who have seen the plans for NFL RedZone say the channel is too expensive — the same complaint used against NFL Network.

Cable sources say the NFL’s initial offer is for about 25 cents per subscriber per month, a rate that puts NFL RedZone on par with Golf Channel.

However, cable executives say it’s difficult to compare NFL RedZone to a network like Golf Channel. Golf Channel is a 24-hour, year-round channel and cable executives have been told that NFL RedZone will only exist during Sunday afternoon NFL games, from the start of the 1 p.m. ET games through the late afternoon games, which amounts to about seven or eight hours a week, 17 weeks a year.

One holdup for several cable operators is the NFL’s demand that they agree to carry NFL Network in order to get access to NFL RedZone. Three of the five biggest cable operators, Time Warner, Charter and Cablevision, still have not struck deals to carry NFL Network, deals that were expected to be struck easily once Comcast signed its deal in May and presumably set the market. These cable operators are still balking at the NFL’s price (50 to 60 cents) and tiering (digital basic) demands for NFL Network.

But even operators that have deals to carry NFL Network, including Cox, are resisting the channel.

An NFL Network spokesman said the league is in discussions with cable operators and other providers and hopes to have more signed up by its launch. NFL Network COO Kim Williams is taking the lead in the cable negotiations.

Meanwhile, DirecTV is continuing to produce its own Red Zone Channel this season, having started rehearsals with channel host Andrew Siciliano earlier this month.

The red zone channel on Comcast will require the sports package @$6.00 per month.Nothing is chabging on DirectTV
I think that is actually a fair deal for Comcast customers. The NFL network is and should be part of the regular digital tier. Something like the Red Zone channel is probably worth charging extra for. I will most likely subscribe once the weather starts to turn for the last 2-3 months of the season. It will be well worth the $12-$18.

They could charge me 6.00 a month, and demand that I wash their cars twice a week, and I'd do it. RZC is the bomb.Bummer that it won't be the same as DTV. Siciliano does a great job.

I don't get it. It would be a nice channel to have to switch to during commercials, but I prefer the actual game and not look-ins when inside the 20. Even when I used to have Sunday Ticket I would switch to a game and stick with it for a while. Once I set my fantasy lineups, there is nothing more I can do, so why not enjoy the actual game? I don't need continual highlights unless it's to fill commercials or half time. I don't see paying extra for the Red Zone channel.

I agree, I had the Red Zone channel last year and very rarely watched it. I'd rather change between games. I got the superfan for free last year and hardly used it. I realized I'd just rather switch between games than stay on the red zone channel. I did like the 30 min games but that was it, if you have an HDTV it would be worth it but I don't have an HDTV.

That's why you bring the TV in from the other room and leave it on RZ while you watch what you want on the primary TV. Like, duh!

another football fans opinion, i enjoy the complete game and dont care about "redzone" . for me if i want to see scores and "big" plays ill watch a highlite show . those 1/2 hour recaps made me feel itchy and nervous . i got superfan so i could get the ticket games in hd and thats all . i guess im in minority but i like to dig in and watch a game from kickoff to final second . got 2 dvrs now so am looking forward to watch 1 game at 1pm, dvr 3 to watch later. possibly at 4pm also ( if games interest ) . ive said it before but to me a football game is like a book . take a "meaningless play" out , and its like ripping a page out of a book . you can get the idea, but its not like you fully experience it . many times a punt, penalty is a "big" play in a game . i enjoy the atmosphere of the field and anticipation of next play strategy and performance enough for that to keep my interest and prefer the complete form .

I kind of agree because while you get the updates you miss the game. I would also recommend that anyone who can afford a few cheap TV's go this route so that you can have 2-5 games going at once...This is great

No, PIP ruins one of the games you are watching. While I have 5 in one room and this is crazy for most, having 2-3 is easy and makes watching the games great. I don't use the Red Zone channel at all, but I do like to record the 30 minute games to get a feel for the game and watch plays that I missed.

One thing that has not been addressed here, will the new Red Zone channel have commercials? That is one of the great things about Directvs redzone channel, no commercials. If the new one has commercials it is RUINED.

Holy crap, if this goes off without a hitch this is gonna be awesome, it says every cable and satelite provider.

ok, here's what i'm gathering from this thread. someone tell me if this doesn't seem right.

people who have DTV and sunday ticket will have the red zone channel, as always, through sunday ticket. there is a new channel, distinct from the nfl network, called nfl redzone, which is similar to the channel available through sunday ticket, but this new channel is not available on DTV. therefore, DTV customers need to buy sunday ticket to get the redzone channel. correct?

No, the Red Zone channel will be on NFL Network on Sundays, and it will be a different show than the Red Zone channel that DirecTV puts on as part of the Ticket. All DirecTV customers will get the new show since it's on NFL Network. You don't need the Ticket.

Dont drop Sunday Ticket just yet. Red Zone channel is it's own separate channel not on the NFL Network Channel.

It says it's available to all cable and satellite providers. I really doubt DirecTV would display this channel when it's on a paid extra service.

You are incorrect. The Red Zone channel will be an add-on channel, not on the NFL network channel itself. So far only Comcast and Dish have picked it up. Verizon has said they won't, and Cox has balked at the idea so far too. I guess the NFL is charging a hefty price for the channel. So to recap, if you have DTV, you need the sunday ticket for your red zone channel, if you have Dish or Comcast you wil be able to get it for a fee possibly, and if you have none of those then you are out of luck as of right now.

Just ordered this via Comcast.

The sales guy said he didn't think the Red Zone Channel would be in high def. :lmao:
