I believe if San Diego wins tonight and Pittsburgh loses next week, the Chargers have the #3 seed wrapped up due to common opponents record tie-breaker. As I figure it, they never played h2h and their conference record would be the same (making the assumption San Diego loses to Oakland next week by virtue of not having anything to play for). I think their common opponents are NE, DEN, BAL, and JAX. SD record vs these opponents is 3-2 while PIT is 1-4. This is just my interpretation of the tie-breaking procedures though so I may be wrong.

Obviously the #3 seed has significant value since not only does it mean avoiding JAX in round 1, but it means avoiding NE in round 2 as well.

Absolutely, but the question posed asked if they could wrap up the #3 seed BEFORE they take the field next week. Presumably the OP has some SD players and is playing a meaningful week 17 game. I was simply answering the question posed.

You are right. The Pittsburgh game just got moved from 1pm to 4:15pm. NFL.com still shows the PIT game at 1pm (even though I heard last night that it had moved). The NFL often does this as the playoffs approach to keep everyone interested. I missed the time change when answering the question. Thanks for the correction.

And since the Chargers can't be locked into the 4 seed with a loss tonight (a SDG win and a PIT loss next week still gives SDG the 3 seed), week 17 will mean something for them.
