Isaac Bruce Traded... (1 Viewer)

Adam Schefter tweeted today:

After St. Louis and San Francisco completed a ceremonial trade, WR Isaac Bruce will retire as a Ram during a news conference on Wednesday.

... and RW:

Rams acquired WR Isaac Bruce from the 49ers in advance of Bruce announcing his retirement. He'll retire on Wednesday. A borderline Hall of Famer, Bruce has some serious credentials. The 16-year veteran holds every major Rams receiving record, ranks fifth in league history in receptions (1,024), and is second in all-time receiving yards (15,208). He is ninth all-time in receiving touchdowns (91). Our guess is that Bruce will get into Canton eventually, but not on the first ballot. While his statistics can't be disputed, Bruce may be viewed by some voters as something of a product of the Rams' system. He never made an All-Pro team, and it's hard to say he was every truly dominant.

Never heard of this happening via trade before. How does that work? The Rams trade a conditional draft pick if Bruce has 1000 catches this season?

or maybe they exchange 8th round picks or something of the sort that wouldnt matter.

either way, it's a nice gesture to allow him to retire a Ram. Glad to see it.

This doesn't make sense to me at all. In his second year he put up 1781 yards, which is the 2nd most receiving yardage in a season ALL TIME (behind only Jerry Rice). He lead the league in receiving yardage the following year. If that isn't dominant, I don't know what is. He was one of the best route runners of all time.Torry Holt both helped and hurt him. Sure, Torry took some pressure off of him, but he may have robbed him of some opportunities as well. People forget what he did BEFORE Holt arrived, and it was amazing. Bruce WAS the "show" in St Louis at one point. It is really hard to say what would have happened if Holt hadn't arrived. We might have be talking about Bruce as the 2nd best receiver of all time right now.

 I'm with you. That comment is ridiculous to me.

Superlative talent who went about his business the right way. Bruce could have been one of the 5 best WRs ever if Torry Holt hadn't taken away his thunder so many times. He was also aided by the Rams' pass-wacky climate for a while there. Still, Bruce is one of the 10 best ever. At one time nobody was quicker. On the books he is #2 all-time in receiving yards and that is amazing.

8 seasons of 1000+ yards and would have had a 9th if not for a blasted hammy in '98. He also

in the Big Show. Great, great player.

If Bruce had played in Pittsburgh or NY, he would be a lock for the HoF, and his Super Bowl catch would be called one of the greatest ever. However, he played most of his career in St. Louis, so that catch is rarely talked about, and I think he'll have a tough time making the Hall, which is a shame. Still, he is a classy guy who will go down as one of the best WRs of his generation.

I loved Isaac Bruce the player, but this kind of sticks with me about him...

Very odd and yet another good reason to not make these guys role models. I'm a Christian and to read some of those comments at the bottom is concerning, hard to believe someone really thinks like that.
Yep, whether you're a fan of Rick Reilly or not, he's a reputable columnist with good relationships with a number of high profile athletes, which validates the idea that he understands how to treat people and be fair in print. It was probably just immaturity. I'm sure there are things I've said or thought 10 years ago that wouldn't be fun to have in print. Thinking about it that way, I wish I didn't dig it up - why hold it over a guy's head for 10 years?

Remember that article. It was TEN years ago. I shudder to think about all the dumb things I said as a young guy that I regret now. Its not really relevant IMO anymore.

Tough time? Nah, he's in the Hall. Mortal lock.
A mortal lock? I don't see that. Hell, look at how long it is taking Cris Carter to get in. The only WRs who might be mortal locks of the past 10-15 years are Marvin Harrison and maybe Randy Moss, and even Moss might be forced to wait a few years, because of some of the nonsense that surrounded him years ago, just like I am sure voters will make Terrell Owens wait a few years before they let him in (if they ever do).

Cris Carter is having a tough time for two reasons: His drug past, and lack of jewelry. But he'll probably get in, once his sturdy broadcast career and drug-counseling have tipped the perception scales in his favor.

Bruce never free-based his way out of town like Carter did. Bruce also has a shiny ring. He's #2 all-time in rec yards, #9 all-time in rec TDs, #5 all-time in recs... plus the #2 all-time single-season rec yardage mark (1,781). Bruce has 16 career 150-yard games, including the beastly 6-162-1 effort in that Super Bowl. He's a worker, leader, playmaker and Hall-of-Famer. He's going in. Period.

I agree, Bruce has the career stats, the single season stats, and the postseason success with him producing crucial plays in the superbowl. I just can't see him having a hard time getting in.

I'm a big Isaac Bruce fan. Drafting him in the 16th round in 1995 still ranks as probably my greatest sleeper pick (back when there truly were "sleepers") of all-time. Love the guy.

But he is NOT a lock for the Hall of Fame.
