I'm less concerned about game script than just his overall effectiveness.  He's got so many strikes against him overall.

He's 12th in the league in rushing attempts, and 20th in rushing yards.  (behind several guys who have missed games, etc.)

His longest run of the season isn't even 20 yards (17 yards)

He doesn't play on a high powered offense (i.e. Gillislee type who is highly TD dependent)

It's not like he hasn't had his chances vs. below-average defenses.

He's doesn't play every down and doesn't catch many passes

Just curious why you think it screams big game for Crowell. I've got him on the bench right now, but I'm considering flexing him as I'm not enamored with my WR5 or RB3 options this particular week in those leagues. There are five factors that give me pause about keeping him on the bench:

  • Houston just lost Watt and Mercilus last week - they should be easier to run on going forward
  • Cleveland just gained Myles Garrett and their D was actually mediocre before he showed up (which is a huge improvement over last year)
  • The offensive line is still talented and will eventually gel... maybe this is the week
  • I'm a jaded Houston fan that refuses to believe our offense is actually any good, thus I could see this game staying close (similar to reason #2)
  • Maybe Hogan can spark the offense and like you said, he's less likely to vulture goal line TDs

I think a lot has to do with them trying to get Crowell to go. I think Kizer was a big factor in holding him back, so I think this week we may see them rely more on Crowell. Defensive injuries to Houston as you mentioned. And getting goal line carries. Plus just being optimistic and thinking "this is the week"

I wouldn't pick up Sammy Watkins even if he was free.  Most frustrating WR on the planet.  

You have a dilemma though, because I'm starting to feel as strongly about Crow.  

 
Doubtless he's got a few good fantasy games in him this year but good luck predicting them. His floor is pretty bad and I feel badly for owners in a situation where they need to flirt with that "on spec". 

 
He's sitting on the wire in my league and I could use an extra RB. His schedule isn't great and I'm just not feeling it, even as a free add.

I dropped Gillislee for him. I absolutely have to have a WR due to injuries and the bye week. I'm tired of guessing NE's backfield production, especially with Rex back in the fold.

 
Isaiah Crowell hauled in 4-of-6 targets for 54 yards and rushed 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown in the Browns' Week 8 loss to the Vikings in London.

Crowell did not wait long to make his presence felt in this one, showing good patience to find a hole and bursting through the secondary for a 26-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. He also found wide-open space during the two-minute drill at the end of the first half for a 38-yard catch which set up a short DeShone Kizer rushing score. Things did not start out so well after the break with Crowell losing a fumble on his first carry, but he bounced back with a 13-yard gain on Cleveland’s next play and was easily the Browns' most productive offensive player on Sunday. With at least 65 total yards in each of his last four games, Crowell has played himself back into the RB3/FLEX discussion.

I agree.

Vikings were getting pushed around a bit on defense. The offensive line can move people. Haven't really seen the Vikings get gashed up the middle like that before this game this year.

Perhaps some familiarity between Hue Jackson and Zimmer?

It seemed like Cleveland may have taken advantage of the Vikings LBers a bit with some of the plays up the middle.

I hope Duke Johnson is alright. He got dinged during the game.

 
Meh.  Not really exciting from a fantasy perspective.  Script-dependent RB on a team that might not score a ton.  Kind of like the Browns.

Wait, could he? The Jets could be the new Browns. Would not be shocked for the Browns to win more games. But I'll wait to see how the Jets spend the rest of that massive amount of cap space they've got.

At least for the moment he could be the 2 down starter there, could be worse. NYJ are not good obv but for the moment he isnt buried or in an un clear time share

The o-line surely needs work - I can not honestly say if it will be fixed but the team has a massive amount of cap space still and early draft picks. This is a solid young defense that just added the best available CB and ILB on the market and still has cap space and draft picks to improve it further.

The passing game was surprisingly effective under Josh McCown last season and either he or Bridgewater will be the starting QB for the season - even if they draft a QB. They will also be getting Quincy Enunwa back who looked very good in 2016 - admittedly he suffered a neck injury last season and I can't assure you he'll be healthy.

A strong defense and at worst an adequate passing game - and a HC that fired his OC because he didn't run enough - is a pretty good formula for Crowell to be effective provided that the Jets address their o-line. Hopefully they do in FA and the draft.

As far as the Browns being a better offense then the Jets - I'm not a Tyrod Taylor fan but I would not argue against it - in fact right now I would say the Browns probably will be the better offense and possibly the better team.

Good info. I haven't followed them closely, but I have been enjoying your updated thread titles. 

I know you're not a Crowell fan from discussions in the dynasty trade/value threads, but the guy is surprising one of the best homerun threats in the league and is a Waldman favorite. He's also shown ability in the passing game, although I will admit I don't know if he earned it or just got volume (example: Hyde had 59 rec last year, but graded out terribly according to PFF). In 2016, he turned 53 targets into 40 rec (75%) for 319 yards which seemed pretty good when that was supposed to be Duke's specialty.

But you're right - I didn't mean to imply that the Jets are definitely a bad situation, which is why I said I'll wait and see, but early on they do appear less appealing than some of the other RB needy teams, largely due to them kind of whiffing in the QB free agency (was reading TB is going to backup McCown which seems weird - would've thought it would be the other way around). I would've felt a lot better about Indy even though they've got their own OL and QB issues. But I guess the NYG OL might've scared me just as much as the Jets situation. Now that I'm thinking about it, not too many appealing spots left. Tampa probably would've felt better than the Jets, though.

 
ESPN's Rich Cimini reports Isaiah Crowell is expected to be a "big factor" in the Jets' offense.

Cimini has been surprised by Crowell's speed, while he believes Crowell has impressed coach Todd Bowles with better-than-expected pass-catching chops. Especially with Elijah McGuire (foot surgery) now sidelined indefinitely, Crowell is one of the league's most underrated RB2s in fantasy.

Isaiah Crowell rushed 10 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the Jets' 48-17, Week 1 win over the Lions on Monday night.

Bilal Powell got the start, playing the first six snaps before bowing out with something in his eye. Crowell then started cooking, finishing off a first-quarter drive with a six-yard touchdown and then pouring salt in the Lions' wounds late in the fourth quarter with a 62-yard score to put the Jets ahead by 31 points. The Jets paid Crowell $4 million per year in March, suggesting they saw him as a starter, but Powell is going to get his work, too. Powell rushed 12 times and caught one pass to total 65 yards. Crowell will be a back-end RB2 at home against the Dolphins in Week 2.

On my bench as well and I’m scared I’ll do the opposite. Continue to start my name brand starting running backs, while Crow performs on my bench. When I finally make the switch he’ll lay an egg.

Looked great tonight.

I own this guy everywhere. Footballguys rankings were pretty high on him. I personally didn’t like him but feel like in every league he just kept falling till you had to take him.

He didn't really rumble for that TD. He turned on the burners and ran away from those DBs.

Yep! I started Lynch over him even though my gut said start Crow. I look at rankings way too much and trust my gut way too little.

 
Isaiah Crowell rushed 16 times for 34 yards and two touchdowns in the Jets' Week 3 loss to the Browns, adding two receptions for 17 additional yards.

Crowell showed some power around the edge but was mostly bottled up as the Jets stayed embarrassingly horizontal on offense. He ended up getting out-rushed 73-34 by Bilal Powell. Crowell has now been out-produced by Powell in 2-of-3 games. Those were the Jets' losses. Negative game script is going to hurt Crowell and help Powell. Both are middling RB3s.

Not sure how he has been "out-produced".... Crowell has more TDs , 4-1 , and out rushed Powell in 2 of the first 3 games. Powell did have a nice Game 2 receiving with 75 yards... but anyone taking Crowell would expect that.

Crowell owners should be generally pleased with what they are getting from him so far. I subbed him in for Mixon and could not be happier with the results.

A good game for owners going forward and realistic expectations would be 50 yards and a TD....anything over that is just icing .

Powell outgained him 2 of 3 games. TDs are always kind of fluky and Crowell is on pace for 21. Those will dry up. Neither guy has much value at the moment.

 
He’s produced 4 TDs, 1 100 td game and added 4 receptions.  

I guess it depends on your expectations  Like most, i drafted him later knowing his limitations as a member of a committee  

The  committe back comps in Crowell’s draft range were (loosely) Denver, TB, NE, Cle, GB, Detroit, Seattle, Ten.  

In our 2 ppr league, Crow is outscoring on a ppg basis every one of the RBs on these teams  the closest competitors being Hyde, Dion Lewis, James White and Bilal Powell

Ronald Jones, Rashaad Penny, Marlon Mack, Royce Freeman all in the same general ADP range

It’s a long season and things can change on a dime, but as of now I’m pretty happy with the production from this back-end Committee RB on a bad team who’s not a prolific receiver 

 
Started Crowell Games 1 and 2. Started Powell this week. Should have never bought into this backfield but I was weak at RB and they were had in the 11th and 13th. Gonna be a nightmare to figure out who to start. Glad they’re doing well tho. All Bell’s fault for being a dummy.

Even though Crowell got the TD's, Powell looks like a much better runner, imo.....better vision and shiftiness....Crowell may be a superb athlete, but he doesn't look very dynamic as a runner at this point.

That said, if Mayfield can consistently move them down the field....

I think you mean Darnold or are thinking of Hyde, or thinking of last year, because Crowell is on the Jets, and what Mayfield does with the Browns is irrelevant to Crowell's success.

Ha, yes thank you!  I'm getting #### teams with rookie QB's mixed up......it's early on the west coast, and I've only 1 cup of coffee...

Yea, all the sudden Hyde looks like he might have room to run.....and Darnold does move the JETS down the field......both teams may actually be fantasy relevant all season hopefully
