Jacksonville WR situation (1 Viewer)

Northcutt and Wilford are the 'starters' but I wouldn't want to own either of them. I think that this will be a rotation all season and you will never know for sure who is going to get the most looks. In redraft you want to avoid this situation as it is one of the worst in football; dynasty, I still like Jones best, followed by Reggie Williams. Williams may end up with another team that is a better passing team and then we can see what he can do. Jones is only entering his third season as a WR and third in the NFL, so we'll have a better idea of what he can by the end of the year but he still has tons of upside in terms of raw ability and is the best red zone target right now on the team. Incidentally, Jones came alive in the red zone last year with Garrard as the QB.

I'm still surprised by the decision to put Charles Sharon on the practice squad. From watching all the JAX pre-season re-runs on the NFL network, It seemed pretty clear that he has some of the best hands, runs excellent routes and usually makes the first tackler miss... i.e. play-maker.

I'm stashing him as a development-type on most of my dynasty teams.

Here's hoping next year, the Jags (A) have a new coaching staff willing to clear out the dead wood at WR, and (B) get a QB who has more passing yds than rushing yds.

From the Jags website:

A new name has surfaced on the offensive side of the ball for the Jaguars. On his weekly radio show, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio suggested that star cornerback Rashean Mathis may see some playing time at wide receiver this Sunday.

“I haven’t heard,” Mathis said with a smile following practice on Wednesday.

Mathis had 31 interceptions in his career at Bethune-Cookman. He had a career-high eight interceptions last season, made a leaping interception of a Vince Young pass last Sunday and now has 21 interceptions in his five-year pro career.

“I love catching the ball. If I can help in any situation, I’d be happy to do that, whether it’s on offense or special teams,” Mathis said.

Mathis is generally considered to be the team’s best athlete. He is certainly one of the Jaguars’ fastest players and it’s possible he has the best hands on the team.

“Every defensive back thinks he’s a receiver. I try to catch everything thrown my way,” Mathis said.

In Mathis’ case, the old adage, that if defensive backs could catch they’d be wide receivers, doesn’t apply. He can catch and the Jaguars would seem to be desperate for a lift at the wide receiver position.

“I know how my hands are. There are a lot of receivers who can’t catch,” Mathis said playfully. “Defensive backs are the best athletes on the field. I always joke with the receivers that I can catch better than they can.”

Reggie Williams was inactive for Week 1. Does anyone know his status for Week 2?
Nope. Jacksonville is a mess in more ways than just fantasy. But right now if you are starting any offensive Jags besides MJD and Taylor you have big problems. And MJD and Taylor are RB2-3 at best. No word on RW, rumor is he'll be active but that's just people guessing I think. The Jags did miss his run blocking, but I'm not sure that alone is enough to get him on the field.

Hey thanks. I always held out hope for RW but I don't think he's going to produce. It's just sad that the Jags have such crap WR on that roster. You know it's bad when Dennis Northcutt is your #1.

Believe me.. I know it's bad. :jawdrop: :hifive:

(KFFL) Jacksonville Jaguars WR Reggie Williams will likely be active for Week 2.
Any word on which WR is going to be inactive then?
Am I crazy for thinking Wilford could produce this year? :goodposting:
Not at all. He's not the most gifted receiver, but he's tall and has decent hands. And he's going to be on the field a lot.

The way I understand it, the Jags activated an extra offensive lineman because they were worried about the condition of one of the starters. This week Reggie is suppsoedly active instead of the extra offensive lineman.

For production, look at targets. Northcutt is getting the ball thrown to him by Garrard. 9 targets, only 4 catches. Not great, but the opportunities are there.

Pretty sad, a cleveland cast-off is the Jag's # 1.

Jags website writer Vic Ketchman answers the following question-

Mark from Little Rock, AR: Do you get a sense the wheels are already in motion to work out a deal that gets Matt Jones out of Jacksonville via a trade?Vic: No, I don’t think he’ll be traded.
So is Vic implying that Matt Jones gets cut?

People from Little Rock want Matt traded because they think it's all the Jaguars' coaches fault that the former Razorback is a Charmin-soft lazy bum who doesn't run good routes, block, catch in traffic or give extra effort on slightly-errant passes.

I don't think he's going anywhere this year, but that might be it for the Jags and Jones if he doesn't turn it around.

Matt Jones couldn't be traded for warm bread right now.
