James Starks: what's the latest? (1 Viewer)

In my league, trade and WW deadline looming. I gotta decide on him soon. Last week he was practicing, but I would've hoped to see something about how they couldn't wait to get him on the field. B-jax got the game ball two weeks ago, but I doubt anyone thinks of him as a season long solution.

Will Starks be STARTING anytime this year???

;)

I don't see them cutting anyone for Starks this year. Unless Nance is still dinged up and they IR him.

Even so, Nance has been inactive at times as they have gone with just Jackson and Kuhn...and the team seems very content with rolling with those 2 the rest of the year.

I would drop him in redraft for sure. Will take him several weeks to get up to speed IMO, and by then you're looking at the end of the season. He hasn't played football in a long time and missed all of training camp.

I've heard this statement, but I don't understand from the perspective that I think Starks has been practicing in full for a few weeks already (and presumeably been hanging around since he was drafted learning the system if not physically practicing) . It's not like they activate him and the timer starts, right?I dunno, maybe I'm putting too much stock in the "they would have brought in FA 'x' if they didn't have Starks in the wings" cool-aid!

Starks will not go over 3 fantasy points all year. You can safely drop him. You are probably the last person on earth with Starks on your roster, and it was a small group to begin with.

The Packers opened up a roster spot by releasing DE Mike Montgomery today. At this time they haven't filled it yet, and McCarthy stated today that he wouldn't decide to activate Bigby, Harris or Starks until Saturday.

My guess is that this open roster spot will be used on Bigby or Harris before Starks. I really only see Starks making the active roster if Nance's ankle injury is serious, since it will mostly likely be his spot that Starks takes.

This. It's highly unlikely that Starks even sees the field this year - much more likely that he will be placed on IR next Monday.

The latest is the same as the oldest - he is injured, has not played in a football game in 2 years, and has absolutely no chance of being valuable in fantasy leagues in 2010.

Excuse me Mr. King..... Could you please point out his current injury to us?The ONLY reason he is not CURRENTLY active is getting into football speed/knowledge at the NFL levelOther than that you are correct sir.

McCarthy said in his Wednesday press conference that the decision who to activate will be made Saturday. I think they have one roster spot open by cutting DE Montgomery earlier this week. I am guessing it will be filled by Harris. Bigby has a chance to be activated. I'm guessing Starks gets cut or put on IR.

I picked him up a while ago because I had the roster space but will most likely be dropping him soon. In order for him to have any value for the remainder of the season, the following must happen:

1. He has to learn the system and playbook

2. The coaching staff needs to be assured he can protect the QB

3. Get considerably more playing time than Jackson and Kuhn ( my guess is that he will split time)

4. Be good.

Starks Taking Slow Road

Rookie running back James Starks hasn’t played football for so long that the Packers might be hesitant to elevate him to the 53-man roster when his PUP eligibility runs out next week.

Starks missed his senior season at the University of Buffalo because of a shoulder injury, then was put on PUP at the start of training camp this year after failing his physical because of a hamstring injury.

He’s on the second of his three-week practice window before the Packers have to activate him, place him on injured reserve or waive him.

Starks has been working as the scout team halfback but hasn’t been tackled since his junior season at Buffalo. The Packers have been practicing only in shells in recent weeks because of their long list of injuries, so to acclimate Starks to playing in pads, they have him doing drills such as hitting the blocking sled before and after practice.

“Showing more signs of improvement, this week more than the initial week,” said running backs coach Edgar Bennett. “It’s more about getting back to the basics and fundamentals and bringing him along from that standpoint. The footwork, ball security, things of that nature, field work, the physical part of it.”

The Packers aren’t saying what they’re going to do with Starks, but considering the short time they have to determine his roster status, it would be a big step to put him in a game after that long layoff from live hitting. Right now their backup halfback behind starter Brandon Jackson is John Kuhn, and the No. 3 back is Dimitri Nance, who is in his seventh week with the team and now has a good grasp of the offense.

“It’s all about pad level, not only as a runner but also as far as protecting the football,” Bennett said. “(Starks) missed a lot of time the last few years, we’re just trying to get him back to wearing (pads). As far as the overall pad level, we’re working on his techniques, the feeling of carrying them, those kind of things.”

Doesn't look good for Starksy Boy.

I believe they have until Monday to decide. They don't have a roster spot available right now without cutting somebody. I don't see that happening unless something happens in this Sunday's game against Dallas.

James Starks: Decision on Starks looming

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said a decision on RB James Starks (hamstring, PUP) will be made Wednesday.

Bet on Starks landing on injured reserve. He hasn't played in a game since his junior season in college and the Packers' run game has been in good hands in recent weeks with Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn. Nov. 8 - 1:01 pm et

Championship.

Packers activate Starks, release FrancoisBy Lori Nickel of the Journal SentinelNov. 9, 2010 4:10 p.m. |(9) CommentsThe Green Bay Packers announced that they have activated rookie running back James Starks from the physically unable to perform list. They released linebacker Robert Francois to make room on the roster for Starks. Starks, who was selected by the Packers in the sixth round (193rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University at Buffalo, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since August. He finished his career at Buffalo as the school’s all-time rushing leader with 3,140 yards in three seasons, even though the sixth-round pick missed his entire senior season after needing surgery in August of 2009.He tweaking his right hamstring in the conditioning early in training camp. "Yeah, it's frustrating but it's just a little unlucky,” Starks said Aug. 1. “I never had this many injuries in a row in my life. Hey, it happens to the best of them. Just got to get prepared and fight through it.”He adds depth to a running back unit for the Packers that has been down to Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn since Ryan Grant was lost for the season in Week 1.The Packers also announced they have released safety Michael Greco from the practice squad.

Was actually hoping they'd IR him. Just not expecting much at all from him this year. He's got fresh legs going for him, but lack of contact/experience really surprises me they activated him.

who else was out there in the free agent RB pool? I'm just thinking with the playoffs ahead, the Packers needed some RB insurance and they got it.

Not really a surprise. If Brandon Jackson were to go down they would be down to Kuhns and Nance. They needed a body at the position. It would surprise me greatly if he got into the lineup absent injury.

Packers activated RB James Starks (hamstring) from the PUP list.

Beat writer Rob Demovsky is "stunned" by the decision. Starks hasn't played football in two years, so he won't be incorporated into the offense any time soon. The Packers likely decided that they needed the depth at tailback over the long haul in case Brandon Jackson sustains a season-ending injury.

I would like to hear Mr. Kings opinion on this......

If Ryan grant can produce like he did in this offense then so can Starks.if Starks has any semblance of ability he will take bjax spot so he can go back to his natural position at third down runnig back. Pick this dude up before someone else beats ya to it

Sounds like they didn't want to risk losing him while enabling him to practice with the team, so what they can see what they have in him. Either way, I wouldn't expect much at all - if anything - this year.

He began practicing three weeks ago but appeared to be limited to mostly individual drills and scout-team duties. Whether he’s ready to play in a game is unclear. Perhaps the Packers will use the rest of the season to allow Starks to practice. They didn’t cut a running back, so they might not need him to play. Instead, they released linebacker Robert Francois.

The Packers’ other options were to release Starks or place him on injured reserve, which wouldn’t have allowed him to practice.

Just drop him already, good grief. lolyou have Gore, Hillis, Benson, and Best. You will never start Starks over ANY of those guys.

Does anyone find it ironic that the reporters who said Starks would be placed on IR, now are stating that he wont play or have a large role? I do hope SF plays some good ball leading up to wk 13 (I would not enjoy reading something to the effect of"gee look at who it was though")
