First, Joe Paterno is not being held to a higher standard than Spanier, Curley, or Schultz. It's just that in the grand scheme of things, nobody gives a #### about those three guys. Those three are getting theirs, so don't think they are getting a free pass. JoePa just happens to be the iconic figure of the school...everyone's grandpappy...the "success with honor" bastion of moral fiber and integrity.

Secondly, for those stating that JoePa reported what was told of him to his superiors and is not liable for anything, I just don't understand how you can't visualize the situation. JoePa is told the phrases "Coach Sandusky", "in the shower", "little kid", and "innapropriate touching" in the same statement and wait until the next day to call his superior!

There's so much to this timeline that cries out "COVER-UP".

-Janitor sees Sandusky blowing a kid in the shower

-Sandusky suddenly retires before the next season

-Sandusky still attends practices and bowl games with kids

-Event with McQueary occurs

-McQueary gets promoted to coach and recruiting coordinator

-Sandusky is still allowed on school property until last week.

Throw in there a prosecutor that decides to not go forward with the case turning up dead, and it's a real head scratcher about what really was going on behind the scenes there. How can JoePa not be aware?

I'm not even implying that anybody has lied. But the grand jury report is not the full story and people here are imputing knowledge on individuals where there has been no testimony or evidence presented and are making assumptions based on these things and making statements of fact rather than opinion about the people (Paterno particularly) and some grander conspiracy based on knowledge and deceit that simply has yet to be presented by any authority figure or stated in the grand jury report, which again is not all direct testimony. I feel like certain people in here are frothing at the mouth and are almost in a fit of rage when making certain statements.

The 5 second take on this:1. McQueary saw Sandusky anally raping a 10 year old in a shower in the PSU football lockerroom in 2002.2. McQueary told Paterno about the incident (I don't think what was actually described matters, but Paterno himself said it involved "fondling and something of a sexual nature").3. Paterno waited another day and informed the AD.4. A week and a half later the AD contacted McQueary and got the story directly from him.5. 5 years later there's a report of Sandusky being on the sidelines at a PSU practice with another young boy.That's all based on direct testimony from the grand jury report, how can you accept that Paterno didn't do more?Not to mention there's little doubt that Sandusky wasn't simply hiding in the shadows in the 5 years there (and even after 2007). There's at least 2 instances where he was caught raping boys in the showers at PSU's football facilities, who knows how many times he wasn't caught. There's reports from players (I heard Paul Posluzny this morning) who have indicated that Sandusky was very prominent around the football facilities from 2003-2007 when he was in the program. When you put these things together you start to see that Sandusky wasn't hiding and hoping that nobody who knew about the 2002 incident was going to notice he was there, he was out in the open, and had no fear. Its impossible to believe that Paterno simply overlooked Sandusky being in his facilities.

Let's say one of Joe Paterno's coaches comes to his home and says he saw Joe's assistant coach fondling and having inappropiate sexual contact with Joe's 10-year old grandson in the men's shower at Penn State. The assistant coach runs a foundation for troubled young boys. Joe tells the school president, who then meets with the witness coach privately, and then proceeds to do nothing. After that, Joe does nothing and tells no one. It is then discovered a decade later that the assistant coach has been serially molesting the troubled young boys of his foundation. Any problem with this?

Now let's say it wasn't Joe Paterno's grandson the coach saw. Keep in mind Shultz is the man in charge of the campus police so Paterno was reporting to the authorities.Since Shultz is a man of the law, that which is stated clearly in the indictment, is why Joe can not at this point be charged as he technically told his boss, univeristy enforcement authorities.I am not discussing morals because that is up the eye of the beholder, and I'm talking legally.Morally, yikes.

Exactly. People are always quick to put all the blame on the guy with the most famous name in these situations. You can't make a moral condemnation based on his actions in the indictment. He immediately reported the second hand information he was given to his superiors. Could he have waged a personal war with this waste of a human being, Sandusky, sure. He could have played super hero and tried to take this further and for that he can be condemned. However, he couldn't have gone to the police himself with essentially a rumor. He wasn't a witness and he can't indentify the victim or speak to what happened. As stated above he reported it properly to the only authority avalable to him. The reality is that he did as much as any of us could do with what amounts to a rumor. Reading the indictment without the bias of knowing any of those people, I would place the blame on two grown men (the GA and the janitor) who witnessed this kind of sick abuse and did nothing about it. The wide receivers coach, a 28 year old man at the time, walks aways from a child being raped and all he does about it afterward is call his daddy to tell him how upset he feels? Seriously?Does Paterno deserve some grief and exactly what he is getting at this point. Probably. But he is the least to blame of the figures involved in this case. Mainly because hes the only guy involved who actually did what he was supposed to here. Again just read the indictment without the bias of knowing Paterno's name and tell me who bears the greatest blame here.

This could be the bomb that was mentioned by SportsbyBrooks last night on twitter... This is about to get a whole lot worse. My God.

Second Mile is not affiliated with Penn State and Mark Madden is not a very reliable source. His last article didn't say much other than there was a grand jury investigation (which apparently many were aware of, it just hadn't made the news cycle) and him questioning where the outrage was. Madden is a shock jock with little to no integrity or care for others. He knows deck hockey and wwe/wcw.

Paterno's own testimony is all I really need to know about his lack of integrity.

What testimony are you referring to? There are two quotes in the report. You guys keep referring to the grand jury report, but I don't think anybody knows what they were reading.

McQueary testified that he told Paterno "what he saw" (and later that he told Curley and Schultz the details). Joe Paterno testified under oath that McQueary told him he had witnessed Sandusky in the PSU shower "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature with a young boy." Paterno sidnt say he was told there was horseplay or something inappropriate. The "inappropriate" and "disturbing" testimony quotes are what Curley and Schultz are now claiming as they are being prosecuted for perjury. Paterno testified under oath he had sexual abuse, if not rape, reported to him by McQueary. That is all you need to know. He later saw Sandusky prancing about with young boys at PSU games and events and did nothing. HE DID NOTHING! He is a child rape enabler.

It's obvious this is a difficult situation to grasp. It really is a huge story. If you were a Paterno fan for the past several decades it's going to take a bit of time coming to terms with all the news. And that's IF you've followed all the news. ESPN is way behind what's going on and they're a source many people are following. If someone is following ESPN then I can understand defending Paterno even more. This thread is growing so quickly it's impossible for folks to keep up with everything.

Give it a week or so and I have little doubt these people who disgust you will share you anger towards those who helped cover things up.

Do you guys believe people think Joe is getting most of the blame?? He's just a part in the chian of events. The guys above him have already been indicted. This is now trickling down to Joe.

Everyone pretty much agrees legally Joe did nothing wrong. But to have either a coach on your staff that lied about seeing a rape OR a guy that had a history that actually did the rape, things look bad ESPECIALLY when you constantly play the integrity card. This wasn't about booster money or some affair.

It's almost like a guy preaching about family values and then gets caught cheating.

I don't think Broadway's defending anyone or suggesting that the legal issues outweigh the moral issues.Sounds like he's just suggesting we may not have all the facts and the ones we have may not be correct.

I agree with you in that I think we know enough to be fairly certain that Paterno enabled a child rapist for his own personal gain.

No, let's change all the facts of the case so we can really get angry here. If it was his grandson then he could ask his grandson what happened and then report it to the police. If he witnessed the crime himself he could report to the police. If he had seen who the boy was he could have told the parents and let them call the police. If if if...play the if game all day long but at the end of the day he reported it to the person he should have reported it to and he did it immediately. We get it, he's jerk for not going the extra mile and calling a news conference to announce that he heard a rumor that his old assistant coach is a child molester and nobody is doing anything about it.

Sorry, this is not an issue about which I can stay calm. It's not even an issue about which I want to be able to stay calm. Anyone with a soul should be outraged and disgusted by all of this and should want everyone who looked the other way to pay a price for their inaction.Children were raped. Young boys who probably had no father in their lives and only wanted a man who would spend time with them...to pay attention to them...to validate them. And this monster Sandusky, in a cold, calculated, disgusting manner proceeded to trick them into thinking that he was that guy and then he used them and abused them and stole from them something that they can never get back.

And what did McQueary, Paterno, Curley, Schultz, etc do? Nothing. They looked the other way and put the reputation of their precious football program above the lives of these children.

I don't have the heart to read this whole thread as I've been a long time Penn State fan and actually was a student there for a couple of years.

Anyone who knew specifics and covered it up should be fired...period. But the vitriol for the "program" is badly misplaced. This incident has NOTHING to do with the football program, other than the fact that one or two of the people involved were coaches. Sandusky wasn't a part of the program at the time.

As for JoePa, keep in mind that Sandusky was like a son to Paterno...literally. How many fathers pick up the phone to turn in their son? When it's your kid, it's hard enough to simply get out of the way and let justice take it's course...WHICH PATERNO DID! If he participated in a cover up, he would deserve this. If he passed the info on his best friend and surrogate son along to higher authorities, even if those authorities were just his supervisors at the school, he did as much as anyone should reasonably expect.

I have far more vitriol for the coach who actually winessed the event....he's the one who should be the object of our scorn. He's the only one with FIRSTHAND knowledge.

Heads should roll, but with the limited info available, I'm not so sure Paterno's should be one of them. He's done too much good for far too long not to be given at least a little bit of the benefit of the doubt. I'm pissed as hell, but not at Paterno or "the program". I'm pissed at the witness who didn't follow up, and the administrators who apparently covered it up. Nobody would suggest that there are any bigger victims than the kids involved, but Paterno is a victim here too. He's not completely innocent, but not many would be in that spot...he doesn't deserve this.

There are countless people who could've done more, her included. If you read the grand jury report, many of these assaults happened in their home, in their basement where Jerry would creep down at night and assault the kids. To think she had no knowledge of any wrongdoing is unfathomable to me. JoePa gets most of the media hype because of who he was which was one of the main reasons he had to go now. The university had to cut ties with everyone with knowledge of this and they and investigators have to focus on the crimes. That was impossible with the circus.

What am I denying?Jerry Sandusky is a monster. He should not have been released on $100k bail. He should not be allowed to kill himself. He should be forced to face his victims and face the wall in prison repeatedly. The students should be outside of HIS house because HE is who has tarnished PSU and Paterno.Mike McQueary is a coward. He witnessed a child in the most vulnerable position possible. He did nothing. He could have stopped that act. That boy SAW him and he did NOTHING. That boy lost all hope that day that he could ever be saved. He sneaked to his office and picked up the phone, but instead of 911 he calls his DAD!?! Mike McQueary is beyond reprehensible. Tim Curly failed in his job as Athletic Director. He failed that little boy. He failed Penn State. He failed Mike McQueary. He failed Joe Paterno. If anybody was given the full details of 1998 AND the full story of what McQueary saw it was this man. Joe reported SOMEthing to Curly. Regardless of what Joe said to him, McQueary certainly gave the full detailed rendition at their meeting. Curly was legally responsible to report this to the authorities. Curly was morally responsible to report it to the authorities. Curly was responsible for the University to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to identify that boy and whether there was an overarching issue with the football program and policies. Curly could have saved more children, but HE told the Second Mile that while there was a complaint that the university's non-existent investigation yielded NO WRONG DOING. Sandusky still had a flow of kids because CURLY blatantly lied to Second Mile. This man should be in jail. This man should have been fired, NOT on voluntary leave. His failure to act on several levels and his blatant lies are inexcusable.Joe Paterno failed that boy. He failed Penn State. And he failed himself. When the coward Mike McQueary came to his house, regardless of the details of what McQueary told him, Joe should have sat down and TOGETHER they should have called the police. That's what should have been done the previous night at a minimum and Joe Paterno should have recognized what the RIGHT thing to do was. I do not know what Mike McQueary told Joe. I just know that the grand jury and the DA believe whatever McQueary and Joe testified as to what their conversation contained. I do not know what Joe said he was going to do about the situation. I just know that Joe met with the AD who later interviewed McQueary and did nothing. What Joe knew about 2002, 1998, before, in between, and after is not clear. My defense of Joe Paterno is one regarding a rush to judgment and making assumptions based on little information regarding the program, what he knew and allowed regarding Sandusky, and what he actually (not theoretically) was responsible for. We do not know his relationships with people, what his role administratively has been since 1998, nor what the AD and others share with him. Joe deserves to be highly criticized. Joe should not represent Penn State and Penn State football saturday. But the criticism is so disproportionate to the actions of Sandusky, McQueary, and Curly, in my opinion, that I cannot help but go into lawyer and defense mode. If it comes out that Joe was aware of 1998 and that was why Sandusky was "retired" if it comes out that he knew Sandusky had these tendencies, that Joe knowingly allowed Sandusky to run rampant etc., then Joe deserves to be vilified.The manner and amount of vitriol being spewed towards Paterno and Penn State itself seems rather misplaced and smells of ulterior motives to me based on certain people in this thread. No, let's change all the facts of the case so we can really get angry here. If it was his grandson then he could ask his grandson what happened and then report it to the police. If he witnessed the crime himself he could report to the police. If he had seen who the boy was he could have told the parents and let them call the police. If if if...play the if game all day long but at the end of the day he reported it to the person he should have reported it to and he did it immediately. Okay so we are now accepting the fantasy as fact? The point is that he couldn't have done any of those things I mentioned above because that is not what happened. It wasn't his grandson and he didn't witness the crime.I understand the anger at the situation. I can't stand that this piece of garbage has been allowed to walk free to ruin kids lives for years. But I think many want to put Paterno on trial here as the reason for that. I just think he's taking way too much blame for a situation in which he really had little control.
