People are looking for motives...most sexual predators were sexually molested as children, be it by a family member or otherwise. That's not to make you feel a sliver of pity for these abominations but there is a pattern.
Sandy was brazen enough to start a children's charity from which he had barrels of victims to sift thru...pretty sick.
And for those that want to make it their personal crusade to smear or tarnish what they feel needs to be on JoPa legacy...do as you want but it only makes you look like you are compensating for shortchanges in your own life. This thread brought out some of the worst in folks and it was discussed on another board it got so ridiculous.
If you want to focus on this and make it all JoPa's fault, have at it but I prefer to just judge the work on the field. The perpetrator is the one who did all this and maybe people above him were blind for whatever the reasons. He had started a charity in the 70s...how many men do you know who start a charity from scratch? Not just show up at March of Dimes twice a year. I only mention it because others might have viewed him differently in 1978 say then we do in 2016 now that he has been convicted of raping little boys.
I'm fine with the outpouring of hate at PSU and Sandy and I kinda understand the JoPa cry but a the same time why would any of you want to post this many times in this thread. Just say you are adamantly against child rape, you spit on PSU/JoPa and move on. The perp is crazy and will try to use anything he can within the law to make it appear he had nothing to do with this. He will never fess up all the way to the grave, even video of him raping a boy probably wouldn't sway the perp's idea of how things unfolded.
The two are inextricably linked, though.
If Joe Pa was a ...Head Librarian and the his director of childrens books was doing this, I would submit and suggest that there is no concern about a legacy at a Library, and nothing to sustain.
But in athletics, and in particular big time college athletics, there is that push.
And I think it was magnified tenfold at PSU with the myth making that Paterno "built" the school. Which to be fair, is probably very true. Not much happening in Happy Valley and when you drive there and come around a bend you see a GIANT stadium, one of the five biggest in the country.
You can't drive within 200 miles in any direction without seeing PSU bumperstickers, , flags, car magnets, sweatshirts in every gas station. Its a big cultural phenomon and its big business too.
I think that level of worship, and frankly that level of revenue, to grow the school, community, reputation, etc, is exactly what both allowed this to happen (the credbility given the second mile) and allowed it continue(no one wanting to have the least bit of a speed bump to disrupt their Saturday in the Fall and bowl trip at the end of the year).
Its why there are still Paterno apologist, which, even if thats what you think, if after all this, your first motivation is to offer a defense for a guy who hasn't shown himself really worthy of one, we see the problem and its why they should have shut that place down for a year.
