Joey Porter Signs with the Cardinals (1 Viewer)

Joey Porter picks the Cardinals

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 19, 2010 6:55 PM ET

Well, here's something for Darnell Dockett to celebrate.

Free agent linebacker Joey Porter has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cardinals, according Darren Urban of the team's official website.

Porter wrapped up a visit with the Redskins Friday, but he wanted to play near the West Coast and Arizona had a bigger need for an outside pass rusher. Porter should start for the Cardinals.

It's questionable how much Porter has left in the tank, and the signing could backfire quickly. But the move is already popular in the locker room. Dockett said 12 days ago that Porter is all he wanted for Christmas and he's quickly chimed in on the move:

"BIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDGANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!Yeaaaaaaaaaaaahh ohhhh leeeeettttttssss DOOOO IT!," Dockett tweeted.

We think he likes it.

UPDATE: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Cardinals will pay Porter $17.5 million over three years, with a max value of $24.5 million. Depending on the structure, that looks like a panicked deal that won't go well for Arizona.

I wonder if there was any competition for Porter. I was under the impression he'd sign for about 2 mil a year or so. This strikes me as overpaying a guy past his prime.

Derek Anderson, now Joey Porter. I know Whis probably likes the Steeler roots, but this seems a stretch to me.

Ah well, it is an uncapped year.

Bad signing. Cardinals aren't looking great this off-season. They could have made Porter sweat and signed him for a lot less later in the off-season. Not quite sure there was a market for him?

I don't like the move and think they waaay over paid him.

That said I thought he was washed up when he left the Steelers and was wrong then...

If they wanted to pay through the nose for a LB, why didn't they just re-sign Dansby? At least he'll be on the field every play.

So AZ wouldn't pay Dansby $8 million a year but they paid Joey Porter $8 million a year...wow. Good Luck Porter, I enjoyed your 2008 and part of your 2009 season.

I kind of like it. I agree the Cards overpaid, but the veteran leadership at LB should really help this team. Our pass rush is very weak, so hopefully he can help with that a bit. I'm not totally thrilled, but I think it is better than doing nothing.
