John Skelton (1 Viewer)

I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about Skelton. The kid looked good last week. Yeah, he took a couple of sacks for safeties, but for a raw 2nd year QB out of Fordham with little experience, Skelton was dang impressive.

What surprised me was hearing he "struggled" in some game reports I read. His stats looked decent, but you can't scout by numbers, so I watched the replay. It was evident the "struggling" simply referred to him taking the two safeties because what I saw was a good young prospect. Skelton was throwing strikes all over the field. He even used different arm angles when needed (like when moving to his left).

I was fairly high on Skelton coming out & drafted him in most of my dynasty leagues (typically in the 3rd round). He's big, strong, athletic, & has a really good arm. Reminds me a little of Big Ben. I was somewhat disappointed when the Cardinals went out & got Kolb in the offseason, though. The good news is Skelton just might be better than Kolb right now. Skelton certainly has more upside, IMO.

If memory serves me right he was not drafted, which would mean he is cheap to keep. But (and i don't know where people get contract info from), it would also mean he has a short contract (guessing 3 years tops). They could always throw a tender on him, but I believe that would jump his salary. May give them a good chance to see whether Kolb is what they thought he was, as he'll have another year (and a camp) to get acclimated. Have to admit though, normally I would have chalked his play up to being on a new team with a trade with little time to prep, but considering what guys like Dalton and Newton have done, it does not bode well for Kolb's prospects, so we may see more of Skelton in 2012 than we thought a couple of months back.

Skelton was a 5th round pick last year. I actually thought he'd be drafted higher, but the number of decent QB prospects likely moved him down a bit.

I went back and watched the tape after seeing your thread and youre right. there's something there. good arm, mechanics, calm under pressure, good anticipation... Rams arguably made Brees look worse in week 8. absolutely possible that he is better than KK right now

The big contract to Kolb will lower the Cards' IQ about this for awhile, but Skelton is probably better today and has a ton more upside. He's definitely someone that should be rostered in dynasty - especially if you own Kolb.

Hmmmm....very interesting. I'd have to drop Jerome Simpson. But it is a start 2QB league. I had Skelton on my roster to start the season and cut him.

I had him in a bunch of leagues too before the Cards signed Kolb. He measures up pretty well against some of the elite QBs in the league except that his performance at Fordham was closer to marginal than good. But for whatever reason there seem to be some small school guys with that don't blow the doors off in college who outperform bigtime when they get to the pros. T.O., Colston, Cruz, Romo, Fitzpatrick come to mind. You'd expect genuine NFL talent to completely dominate at the lower levels of the NCAA and they didn't. So I think there's more hope than normal that Skelton can develop his mental game to go with his physical tools. And as others have said he sure looks the part when he's in the pocket or the ball comes off his hand.

The Cardinals are crazy if they don't develop this kid. Skelton has real potential.I can understand them going back to Kolb, but I expect Skelton to beat him out if they open up the competition in training camp next year (which I believe they will).

I don't expect Kolb to be long for Arizona. Understand WHY we signed him (keep Fitz in town here), but he's been no better than McNabb/Orton and w/o a fresh inked deal, would have been already replaced.

He's no different than Leinart was. Pop gun arm QB with happy feet. He's played far worse than his mediocre stats indicate.

I expect Kolb to start when healthy obviously. (And he'll get next offseason (with a full offseason) as the starter -- and if healthy will enter 2012 as unquestioned starter)

I just don't think the guy's very good. Never have. Never will. He looked like Trentative Edwards after 4 years in Philly last year.

He went into Philly's house and beat them on the road today. Could Kolb have done that? Discuss.
Grabbed him a couple of weeks ago in two leagues where I'm doing a bit of a rebuild. Love his physical skills and the way he stands in the pocket, and love even more he is learning, above all else, to get the ball to Fitz. Could be nothing but fools gold, but even before today's 3 TD performance he was worthy of a roster spot in dynasty leagues (rosters 22 deep and greater).ETA: Dynasty question, Skelton or Vince Young?

I agree that he has been better than Kolb. Kolb sucks.

The Cards are now 4-2 the over the last year and a half with Skelton. They are 4-15 without him.

I would love to see him continue to start and develop. Kolb is not the future, so let's see if Skelton is.

I have liked Skelton since they drafted him. I hope they give this kid a chance to prove he can handle the job full time. It's just a shame we had to give up DRC to get Kolb and keep Fitz.

Skelton can make every throw in the playbook. He had good zip on his TD passes and that loft to Fitzgerald at the end of the game was a thing of beauty. Fit it perfectly in his hands. Maybe this will motivate Kolb. But Fitzgerald sure is benefiting from Skelton right now. And a Fitz owner I'm liking this relationship they have.

Kevin Kolb doubtful to return this week

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports quarterback Kevin Kob is doubtful to return this week. La Canfor says Kolb is dealing with ligament damage, a bone bruise and sprain in foot in addition to turf toe.

When Kolb is healthy enough to play, the expectation is he returns as the starter despite the fact that John Skelton has won two straight games.

Neither guy is going anywhere for a while. Start Kolb the rest of the year when healthy just to finish kicking the tires. If doubts still linger, absolutely open up a competition in camp next year.

Kevin Kolb:

7/29/2011: Signed a six-year, $65 million contract. The deal contains $21.5 million guaranteed.

2011-2016: Under Contract

2017: Free Agent

John Skelton:

7/14/2010: Signed a four-year, $1.972 mllion contract. The deal included a $182,000 signing bonus.

2011: $405,000

2012: $490,000

2013: $575,000

2014: Free Agent

I think Skelton's measurables were pretty impressive. He's a huge guy ala Big Ben with a cannon arm. I think the knock on him was small school with crappy support.

Blaine Gabbert was crap in college and he had an excellent supporting cast and look where he got drafted just because of his measurables. I'd definitely rather have Skelton over Gabbert...and I'm a Jags fan. :bag:

Aggression, recognizing your best strenghths, overcoming being an underdog, overcoming adversity and playing loose.

I may pickup Skelton so he can ride my bench all year. But I would want someone like that with a killer instinct and a "I don't give a flying crap about what my ranking is or what the Vegas line says because I will come out and chuck it whether you like it or not" attitude.

Would this thread still exist if Nnamdi just covered Fitzgerald? Probably not...
Skelton looked really good the first week he filled in for Kolb, as well. He also showed promise last year as a rookie. Skelton has all the tools. It doesn't take long watching him to see he's got a bright future. What will help Skelton in the long run is it'll be tough for Arizona to spend anymore money on the QB position. They may very well go back to Kolb when he's healthy, but I believe Skelton is a better prospect. It wouldn't surprise me if Skelton wins the job in training camp next year. He just might be the guy they've been looking for.

The Cards are outclassed in this game, but Skelton remains a big-time prospect. The kid just has all the tools.

Kolb is going to start when he gets healthy, but that's simply because of the contract. They've got to see what he can do. That said, I believe we'll see Skelton become their starting QB by 2013 at the latest (likely sometime next season if not in week 1).

6/19 99 yards 3 interceptions. I have no idea how he's looked outside this game but against SF he looks horrendous. Lousy accuracy and doesn't even look like he's trying to read the defense but instead is forcing it to Fitzgerald.

I think last week's performance had something to do with the Eagles running plays that Kolb was able to call out.

:tfp:

There's no way you can defend Skelton in this game, but he's absolutely a good prospect. Again, he's got all the tools. Skelton has looked at least as good as Kolb & he has much less experience. You hate to throw a kid under the bus fairly early in his career, but Kolb simply isn't the answer.

This was destined to be a nightmare from the start, but if you're basing your opinion of Skelton off this game, you need to watch the last couple weeks.

He's raw, no doubt, but Skelton can play. There have been All-Pro QBs who have thrown 3 INTs (or more). I hope they stick with Skelton, but I wouldn't blame them for going back to Kolb when he's healthy. As bad as Kolb has shown, I don't think it makes sense for them to sit him with that contract (at least this year).

Not sure if he's even the backup of the future in AZ (think he's Derek Anderson II), but Kolb isn't an NFL quality starting QB.

Kolb flat out sucks. Happy feet, average arm strength, turnover prone. He's Trent Edwards II

You could maybe argue last week's ugly was because he was going against SF. This week he's going against St. Louis and he looks terrible. I think Kolb knowing all the plays Philly was going to call really helped Skelton look better than he is.

Very uneven performance from Skelton again today so far. He looked very promising for 2 weeks & not so much the last 2 weeks. That said, Kolb simply isn't the answer. It's hard to understand how that organization could give him that kind of contract. If you don't have a strong arm, you've got to have various intangibles & Kolb just hasn't shown them.

Obviously, QB is a brutal position for a young, inexperienced, raw QB like Skelton. You see even quality, experienced QBs struggle for multiple weeks. Skelton is a nice dynasty stash because of his raw tools & the fact they may not be able to go out & get a proven QB at this point. They likely won't draft one high, either.

I could definitely see Skelton improving enough to win the job next season. He's inconsistent right now, but has a lot of potential. Skelton can make some sick throws, but he hasn't put it together yet (obviously). Anyway, if you have a roster spot you don't mind burning over the offseason, Skelton is certainly a decent stash. If your league is heavy on QB scoring & you could use a QB, even better.

I wish someone would punish this guy in a severe way. I wish they played Detroit, so Suh could stomp him in the throat.

I think Kolb knowing all the plays Philly was going to call really helped Skelton look better than he is.
 How would Kolb knowing Philly's offensive calls make Skelton look better against Philly's defense?
Hey Skelton, the defenders are going to be here. Receiver x is going to be wide open. Hey Skelton, they're blitzing this play. Hey Skelton, it looks like a blitz but it's not really. That kind of stuff won't make you look like Peyton Manning but it's going to help any qb look better.

Pretty sure Kolb wouldn't know any of Philly's defensive calls, even if they didn't have a new DC.
