Jose Fernandez killed in a boating accident? (1 Viewer)

That's my main problem with all of this.  Because he was talented and a celebrity, it's almost as if society is okay with his poor decisions.

If this was your average everyday person, people would think "Wow, what an #######."
Very true. I suspect a lot of people will just be silent on this one now that the facts are out there. No need to pile on by trashing the guy after he's dead.

I believe it is considered tragic in the sense of someone so talented dying so young. And let's face it, we tend to glorify professional athletes, so when one of them dies so young, regardless of the circumstances, it is considered tragic that such a life was cut short.
That's the jist of it. The only reason people care is because he could throw a baseball well... It's a natural reaction that we care because we won't get to see that talent anymore. It's kind of a selfish response, but that's what we're lamenting.

I'm with fantasycurse.   Why do people see this as a tragedy?  No, I don't want anyone to die.  But the guy basically committed suicide.  And his friends knew what they were getting into.  His decision, and he died from it.

Tragedy is kids not having food or getting educated.  Or growing up in slums.  Or someone getting cancer.  Or a family getting killed in a car accident.  Things that happen due to circumstances.

Tragedy is not someone making a stupid conscious decision and paying for it.
Tragedy - an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe.

Doesn't say anything about the reasons or causes for the event...

Its a tragedy because a mother lost her son, a wife lost her husband, and an unborn child lost his father.

The tragedy was he could have been a powerful voice in Miami's latin community and made the wrong decisions.  Its also tragic that his unborn child will never know the father.
