Jose Fernandez killed in a boating accident? (1 Viewer)

Understanding this is a tough time for anyone in the baseball community, but we don't know if the Marlins or Loria have ever pushed back a start in the past or removed him from a game where the timing ended up SAVING his life. Maybe pushing his start back to Monday saved the lives of other Marlins players, and maybe a bunch of them would have been on a boat with him on Tuesday instead of last night. We'll just never know. I just don't think this is really the right time to start passing blame on people for what was an accident.
I understand MB...I LIVE IN MIAMI...I can promise you that people will be pointing the blame down here. Sometimes when I post I am channeling what I am hearing on radio.Twitter, LeBatard was already on SportsCenter.

Of course no one os to blame but Jose Fernandez but this organization has done so many terrible things since he took ownership that undoubtedly that part of the story is going to be blown up. Jose was supposed to pitch Sat or Sun and the Marlins pushed him back.

I think it's very caddie for people to try and get angry at me but they will because that's what folks in here do sadly. I was expressing my pain and misery about the situation and also sharing what we know including that his start was pushed back. Even if Miami were not in the playoff hunt they wanted to try and hurt the Mets...that's what teams do in Baseball. I am simply pointing out that in this particular instance things didn't go as planned.

I'm not really saying Loria is to fault but you can be sure Marlins fans and people within the community will try and pin it on him or say "Karma" and that's unfortunate but probably earned by Loria and his front office.

Wow, could you dial it back just a hair and have some compassion? Miami purposely pushed him back a day to try and derail the Mets, that's a simple fact. I understand your point but we're kind of bleeding down here right now, you can criticize the accident later but for the moment could you just hand me a bandage?

It's a rough day today Igno, nerves are tender. If the Marlins did not push his start date back, he likely would not have been out at 3 AM this morning. I am guessing he was trying to make it back thru the same channel the cruise ships pass thru, very dangerous even for a 33 foot boat.

It sucks, and Jeffrey Loria is to blame, he has to be.
Whatever drugs you are on do you no favors.

I hear you, and there are certainly a lot of reasons for Marlins fans to hate Loria. And I wouldn't doubt that there are others who will have that knee-jerk reaction to find fault with Loria for this. And I get that everybody mourns things differently. Just don't see a whole lotta upside to do it that way in here. Thanks for understanding.

And the same and I wasn't trying to get under anyone's skin but it's clear that's not a 2 way street.

Maybe if you tried communicating a thought once in awhile that didn't use "I", "me", or "mine." You don't help your team when you talk.

You literally just said that.
I'm saying that it will be brought up that Fernandez was pushed back. Miami is pretty much out of the playoff hunt so why finagle with the rotation? It was done to try and derail the Mets, they wanted to make sure Jose faced them on Monday.

You can't always post tone and my tone was cynical because of the organization and being a fan down here for the last 25 years. f people want to try and create a flame war with me over Loria...I don't think I will have to say much. It's obvious it is not rooted in ny love for the Marlins or respect for Loria, we know why folks go out of their way to be hateful towards certain folks and I'll leave it at that. Sad but true.

It's just ironic that Miami moved the start date back.

I think its best that we all can refrain from playing the "blame game" out of respect.   Jose was a grown man that was more than capable of making his own decisions.   We all know he was a great baseball player--and all signs point to him being a great man.   We should celebrate him and what he did in his life before we start arguing and going back and forth over who is at fault.

I know this sounds stupid but I picked this guy up before his first major league start in a keeper league and kept him for two years. I always felt like he was "my" guy or I "discovered" him. Just loved  watching him pitch.
Me too. Picked him up then watched his first start where he was striking guys out with a ridiculous breaking ball.

Don't know much about him outside of he was a dominate pitcher and seemed like a good kid.

RIP.

that ####ed up period of time when you hear about it and can't process it in your brain. can't even fathom this. that's our heroes. athletes are our heroes. Wake up. "Aquaman drowned." WTF?! might as well have said that. equivalently unheard of

Don't make me laugh here
He went to HS in Tampa, it's not just Miami, there's a whole lotta Jose fans in the Tampa area.

Forgive me for lashing out about Loria, I just can't believe this is happening.

Moment of silence at the Miami game today, I would expect a few more might have a moment of silence.

Umm, I think no Miami game today.

Yeah the presser this morning by the authorities said that speed appears to have played a factor, but no obvious signs of alcohol or drug use at the scene (but that autopsies would confirm that for sure). They said the boat was seen regularly in the area and Marlins players were known to have been on it with some regularity and that they would have assumed they knew the channel well enough. But yeah no lights around apparently.

Terrible news.  Makes me sick.  Reminds me when Olin and Crews died in a boating accident in the early 90s.

No lights by the jetties, but my boating friend said it would normally be visible at night with the lights of Miami in the background.Unless it was raining, then it would be more difficult to see.

Mop, please show some respect and stop posting for an hour. Thanks.
Why not just let him vent and not pile on?  He's clearly a big Marlins fan and is hurting.  No reason for people to poke at him.  This is not directed at you but seemed like the appropriate one to quote.

My last Jose Fernandez story/thought is this...an FBG who I have been good buds with forever was down here on business and I got tickets to see the Marlins/Fernandez pitch, few rows off the field and we managed to sneak down to the row above the Marlins dugout. That was just a few weeks back but it was a wonderful night with someone I don't often see in person.

I brought my wife to the park to watch him pitch this season, I brought friends that had never been to a baseball game before to watch him pitch this season, it hurts that none of us will get to enjoy him anymore and I'm sad to say but the stadium is not going to be the same for a while.

Because he was making the thread about him.  Every time there is a thread like this, someone makes it about them, gets in a pissing match, etc...   Show some respect. Post that #### another day.

People don't think clearly after receiving shocking news like this.  No reason for people like Limp Ditka to argue with someone who's clearly hurting even if they are correct.  Sometimes it's just best to let it go.

Anyways thoughts and prayers to the Fernandez family...what a horrible tragedy.

This is one of those few guys that you stop what you're doing to watch.  The Tigers broadcast team mentioned him the other day, talking about the guy with the best stuff they had seen all year.  98mph on the black with a bugs bunny curve ball and the guy played with a lot of passion.  Basically a better version of Felix Hernandez, 24, sky was the limit.  This is a sad day for sports.

I just read about this.  I am not a Marlins fan but I immediately got tears in my eyes because I knew well what a treasure this kid was, on and off the field.  And now I read that he just announced days ago that he and his girlfriend were expecting.  Sorry I can't link, but Clint Hurdle's statement in particular was utterly, perfectly moving.  A devastating day for baseball, sports fans, and hell, for people.  RIP
