Jose Fernandez killed in a boating accident? (1 Viewer)

I just read about this.  I am not a Marlins fan but I immediately got tears in my eyes because I knew well what a treasure this kid was, on and off the field.  And now I read that he just announced days ago that he and his girlfriend were expecting.  Sorry I can't link, but Clint Hurdle's statement in particular was utterly, perfectly moving.  A devastating day for baseball, sports fans, and hell, for people.  RIP
i am not going to lie, i teared up this morning too.  it felt weird, i've obviously never met the guy.  had no particularly strong attachment to him.  but it just feels so incredibly wrong and tragic.

Terrible news.  Makes me sick.  Reminds me when Olin and Crews died in a boating accident in the early 90s.
Unfortunately, as an Indians fan that was what immediately came to mind. Bobby Ojeda I don't think ever got over his survivor's guilt. I hope he has.

####### MOP manages to make this tragedy about him.  #### that guy.

RIP José.  Just stomach turning sad.

Keith Hernandez said during the Mets open that he had reached out to Ojeda this morning via text, I gotta assume this opens up some really old wounds for Bobby O

Everyone in here that even remotely wants to try and sling #### in my face should look in the mirror and do some serious soul searching, anything beyond that remark only makes the events of today worse. I knew some of you were sick in the head but I was naive enough to think the good will we all have shown so many folks around here would certainly be granted my way when I am feeling blue about a death, especially to my home team...I didn't think I said anything off the ranch. And now I'll  prove it.

Dan LeBatard in the 2nd paragraph of his Miami Herald Tribute goes right after the Marlins and Loria, sure he didn't hold them responsible but he bashed them in the 2nd paragraph while he was glorifying his mother(that's hard to do) and rightly so.

Dan LeBatard gets paid millions to spew his opinions and I share a lot of them although not all. It's incredible that some of you would call me names because I knew what the story would be in South Florida. He goes on in the article to showcase the Cuban POV, I doubt many of you will read it.

Funny I read the entire article and I didn't see a single sentence about them pushing his start back or the name Loria mentioned once.

Dude, you explicitly stated you blamed Loria for his death. Now just admit you were being irrational due to your emotions running high and let's move on.

Hopefully it's not too late for Merriam-Webster to have a photo of this post next to their definition of vindication in the 2017 editions.

We'll put you on the ignore list, hope you do the same and never look back. I'm not going to read posts from #######s/aliases that just want to break the house rules and have no honor, you meet the criteria for sure.

So sad that people turned this into something personal, unbelievable. I said not one negative word about a poster, not a one.

I usually never hit the report button but maybe this thread should be locked just out of respect for Jose.

This got out of control and decent posters recognized I was simply venting a little but the usual #######s had to try and turn it into a let's pick on this poster...so ####### sad on a tragedy like today.

It's par for the course in this place unfortunately. I thought this place had really changed with some of the outpouring of love I saw in the last few months.

No lights by the jetties, but my boating friend said it would normally be visible at night with the lights of Miami in the background.Unless it was raining, then it would be more difficult to see.
Apparently it was raining last night. A buddy of mine was on a fishing charter last night in the same area, it left out of Bayfront park. He said they came back in around 2am but it had been raining pretty good while they were out.

I expect a little more from you Shady, I'm sorry. I understand it from the usual suspects but not you. That story very clearly takes a swipe at the Marlins and their ownership when he says they have made such bad decisions that it's forced his mother from the Marlins and their stadium. he speaks about her climbing the steps to go see Fernandez pitch. He is clearly stating that the team has caused her and many fans a lot of grief and pain.

I'm not sure why you are specifically coming after me in here today, I could go a little further but I'll frame it more as disappointed that you feel the need to look at me this way right now. I hope everything is OK on your side of the fence Shady, nothing but love for you.

Sun Sentinel-Ft Laud

Who knows who pushed it back, likely poor Donny but the fact remains he was originally supposed to pitch over the weekend and was pushed back. Probably in hindsight it doesn't matter but it was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news this morning. I thought wow...they pushed him back and he decided to go fishing late because he knew he didn't have to pitch on Sunday.

I wasn't trying to make anything about me and I am sorry to anyone that honestly felt upset. But the story was not a figment of my imagination. Yes it could have happened anytime but it didn't it happened on the weekend where he was originally scheduled to pitch.

I'm confused.  It says right in your link why they moved him back...  He was pushed back because he threw a season high 111 pitches the game before, yet it still left him to pitch the last game of the season if they pulled off a miracle. This happens all the time in baseball. This is a sad thing that's not on anyone.

Cubs game tonight - they had a jersey hanging in the dugout.  Also, on their center field scoreboard, where they usually list the current pitchers' numbers and the game score, everything was left blank ...except for a '16' next to Miami.

WTF is going on in here? This wasn't a random gun act, act of terrorism, police shooting, or anything like that, so I'd expect the stupidity turned down, not up.

Tragic story, really terrible - not much more to say. T&P to his family.

Very sad.  Life is precious.  Even though I'm a diehard Dodger fan out here in CA I followed the Marlins and have been more to their games than any team the last several year as my son played with Christian Yelich in HS.  I'm sure Yelich and Stanton were really close with Fernandez as they were the future of the Marlins.  So tragic.

MOP - I understand you hurting but come on man.  This has nothing to do with ownership, management or anyone else.  The dude went out on a boat.  Someone was reckless.   People died.  The rotation had absolutely zero to do with this.

You're probably right Judge except that he was supposed to pitch on Sunday, he was moved back to Monday, he ends up doing something reckless like you said. It's a tough pill to swallow down here.

Dude, you are insane. Le Batard criticizes the Marlins for making decisions over the past two decades that have ruined the team. But he most certainly does not blame the Marlins or Loria for Fernandez's death like you did.

I think we can all imagine several butterfly effect scenarios that may have averted this tragedy. But to assign blame as you have is simply unconscionable.

Are you reading what you're posting?  Why is it that everyone else is wrong?

Yeah--this whole "blame game" thing needs to stop.  As a manager of a business-I can tell you that employers change the schedules of employees all of the time. I sometimes get called in to do a double shift one day and will get an extra day off somewhere else.  If I choose to do something that puts me in danger on that day off--it's not my employers fault.   While Jose was a very young man--he was still an adult that was capable of deciding what he wanted to do on his day off.

The news of his passing is barely 24 hours old.   There is a time to remember him and his greatness, to mourn his death and to celebrate his life--and then there is a time to worry about any issues or questions surrounding his passing.  Right now--we are at the time for the former and not the latter.  MOP--while these forums are places to express different points of views--they are also places where etiquette, class, and appropriate behavior also need to exist.  This thread started being about celebrating the greatness of Jose, and sharing stories and plays about him until you derailed it with your blame game towards the Marlins.  If you want to start a thread dedicated to "unfairly" calling the Marlins murderers--go for it--it's your choice.  However--I think you changing the course of this thread--and then following it up by attacking every response that your inappropriate actions had triggered has devolved this thread from a place of mourning and sharing stories--into the MOP vs rest of the world thread.   Sometimes I think you should maybe take a deep breath, or take a walk and think about things before you just spew them out.  You would never say the things you were saying at a funeral where there are people mourning--so why would you say them here?    If that's too much to ask--please start your own thread about who is to blame for Jose's death as opposed to ruining this one for us.

Anyhow--one day after the news and some internalizing, I personally viewed Jose as basically the modern day Nolan Ryan.  His stuff was nasty and he would pitch with an energy like no other.   I want to thank the posters who put up the play involving him and Tulo where he snagged a sharply hit line drive like it was absolutely nothing.   I had never seen that play before today--and it really resonated with me.  To see the talent and athleticism he had to make that play--and to see the reaction of both Tulo and him to that play was frigging amazing.  I still can't believe that he's no longer with us.

This one hit me a little different. I was in Naples last summer visiting a friend who lives there. There is not much to do in Naples so on Saturday morning my buddy asks if I want to take a drive to Miami and catch a Marlin game.  I always love going to different ballparks so of course I say yes.  Since nobody goes to these games it was easy to get good seats. So I am watching this young big pitcher who I have no idea who it is and the guy is looking like Roger Clemons in his prime. I say to my friend ...who is this guy?  My buddy who is just a casual fan says.  I don`t know some young kid from Cuba who has a good arm.  I think he only went 6 innings but had 9 Ks and nobody hit the ball hard.  Since that day I followed him in the box scores and of course he was only getting better.   Don`t know anything about him as a person other than what I read and it all seems very positive...but as a player I am sure if they had a starting pitcher draft every MLB team who take him as their #1 guy and that is saying something.

RIP

I think the saddest part is how he and his girl just announced a few days ago that they were expecting.
Oh good lord that is horrible.  :(

I pray this young woman has the inner strength to raise this child as a single parent and gets help from family

Anyone else see his final start, last Tuesday?

I'd put it up there with the best few starts I've ever seen. 12 Ks, 0 BBs, 3 hits (double in the first inning, two lucky singles in the 8th) over 8 innings against a good team.  Amazing stuff, the kind you can't look away from even when a guy is dominating your team.

My heart sunk when I saw the news yesterday.  This guy had a ton of potential and just seemed like an all around good dude.  Baseball and society lost a good one in Jose Fernandez.

It came so easy to him too

Watching the game now. Dee Gordon is first batter. He bats left but lined up on the right side for the first pitch wearing Jose's helmit. After the first pitch removes helmit and puts his on to bat lefty. Hits his first home run  in 303 at bats this year. Crosses home plate in tears.
