Jose Fernandez killed in a boating accident? (1 Viewer)

Was at the game last night, not sure words really can describe the scene, screw all of you that hate on me, it's totally your problem, not mine.

-As I posted, I went to almost every home game he pitched all season. I don't give a #### what you all think of me and who I decide to lash out as a fan of the Marlins down here.

-it's clear who the haters are and that's on you. I haven't heard much from any South Floridians in here wanting to take me to task.

You all just like to go after posters and I am not going to allow you to bully me for my feelings and beliefs, you all can go straight to hell, each and every one of you who dares to judge me when I am just living life.

I wonder if any of the other 2-3 Marlins fans we have in the Baseball Forums made it out last night. The HR from Dee to open the game was amazing. Players crying between innings, very sad. I'm pretty sure I watched more Jose Fernandez games in person than most around here. This was very personal for a lot of folks down here. I have a lot of good memories of him and the nights and people I went with to the games. I'm sorry that wasn't what came across.

But I mean it when I say that a good majority of those who trying to take aim at me, you don't care about Jose Fernandez, many of you never saw him pitch, you're just looking to take a pot shot at me so again from the bottom of my FBG soul, go bleep yourselves.

Tragedy.  Did this guy have a reputation for this kind if reckless behavior?  I was shocked after reading the story of his friends going with him on the boat while he "blew off steam".  It's amazing that he died and his number is retired, but if he had lived he would be in prison for bUI manslaughter.

According to Dan Le Batard, JF was most definitely known to party. And on Le Batard's radio show yesterday, he warned people to be ready for some ugly details regarding the boating accident to come out. He didn't have confirmed details, but he sounded as if he would not be surprised if a bottle of tequila was found in the wreckage.

Three guys in their mid 20's were out at night on a boat fishing. I'd be much more surprised if there was no alcohol found.

I don't think they were fishing according to what i read but I'm not going to argue the intent of the trip.  They picked the 3rd guy up around 2am from his condo

JF's body was unrecognizable, they had to use the address on the ID to figure out who it was. There are a lot of terrible details that are coming out that I haven't linked into this thread for obvious reasons.

I didn't know you lived in South Florida, when can we meet for a beer at the Seminole HR Center Bar?

Yeah the text messages from the other guy's friend definitely don't make it seem like a friendly night fishing excursion.  It appears Jose was angry about something.

Who said he was under the influence? No alcohol found on the scene. Who said he was driving? Wasnt his boat. A lot of assumptions in your post.

My post was an assumption based on the article about the text message string from the victims friend.  It sounded pretty legit to me.  The ball player was upset about something after being at the bar until 2am.  He wanted to "blow off steam" on the water.  The friend was worried he was going to get lost, and went to keep an eye on him.  Odds are if they were at a bar until 2am, and the boat was throttled, he was drunk driving.

Yup you hate to speculate but it doesn't look good.  Just a tragic story as he seemed like one of the good guys in baseball.

The part of the texts that struck me as off was the friend saying something to the effect of "don't worry it's not my time to go" and then the other guy wanting to make sure the guy has find my iPhone turned on. That's pretty damn weird.  Like if my buddy was having a bad day and I'm helping him out, I don't think someone would want to make sure I was tracked by my phone and be extra safe.

well, in these times, if there are more illuminating details to be found, they will be found and reported.  so, it is probably best to just wait for the facts to come out before jumping to any more conclusions/speculating any further.

But this is the FFA....?

An absolute legend. An incredible man with all the talent anyone could ever dream of having. He had the passion and fire within him like no other and he sported the orange and black like the legend that he is and was. Jose Fernandez was the heart and soul of the pitching staff and was really the heart and soul of this team. His death was untimely and tragic, but he'll be playing on the big field in the clouds with all of the greats that have met their own tragic fate. A monster on the mound, a teammate like no other and a legend all together. May he Rest In Peace and may his family find comfort in knowing that he's somewhere better now, though his loss is truly tragic. We'll miss you, Jose. RIP #16.

I think that as long as we're sourcing, and sourcing is sufficient, this should suffice. It paints a sadder, more tragic picture on the events. This doesn't look good.

Bernal and others described Fernandez as under some stress Saturday; the Miami Herald said the impetus was an argument with his girlfriend, who is pregnant with their first child. Yahoo Sports reported that Fernandez asked Marlins teammates to join him on the expedition, but they declined.

:(

Yeah, this looks awful.  It's just as the facts come out, we need to know whether or not the hagiography is correct, or whether he might have taken two people with him. It's all moot, but the facts should be known.

Was Jose Fernandez responsible for two other deaths?  How do we view that. I vote tragedy all around, but it's only fair to report the facts of the situation.  Believe me, I just saw this and am unhappy all around, and have been about his death.

Telling your friend "trust me it's not my time yet" obviously tells how dangerous a situation they were getting themselves into, especially with reports of Fernandez being in a bar for awhile before getting in the boat. Just terrible.

My immediate thoughts go to to Pelle Lindbergh, and you know what I mean. RIP.

I'm a little disappointed. Not in the fact that you're essentially dancing on JF's soul to defend your iHonor, that was to be expected, but that the part about you telling Loria that its all his fault isn't in here.

I've already received PMs from Marlins fans thanking me for putting you in your place. They understand the immediate anger in the grieving process. I'm going to simply stop any more back and forth with you in this thread, that's what you and your kind feed on. You're not as popular in the Nothing group as you seem to think you are. You offer nothing in the SP, where exactly do you draw iCred from? You don't, you're a bottom dweller/feeder and this sad thread proves it again and again. The fact you inserted "iCred" into your post shows everyone the FFA/FBG where you operate from.

You were a huge Jeffrey Loria hater in the Baseball threads and rode any Marlins fan that wanted to post just how awful the owner is. When you got a chance to flip that in order to bang on me you didn't hesitate. You have no honor and do not abide by the board rules, cheers.

I was told the one passenger didn't know JF well...one not at all.  Not sure if true, but makes the story even tougher when you think about all of them.

Is it confirmed that it was JF's boat and he was driving?

Any lights on the boat?

This is amazing :lmao:

On a side note saw this earlier, I'm sure a lot of us made some poor decisions when we were younger - this kid made one and sadly it cost him his life. Just a terrible ending to his story.

RIP Jose

Not exactly...

His poor decisions cost other lives too.

They are now saying he had cocaine and alcohol in his system.

Ummm no, I'm aware of that and my comment reflects it. His friends decisions cost their own lives too. We don't even know who was driving the boat. They're all responsible for their choices - One of his friends had coke in his system too and the others were both right around the legal limit.

& don't misinterpret like I think they should've died, this is tragic - but to pin the deaths of his friends on him (especially without knowing if he was the driver) is extremely aggressive as of now.

Well they all made poor decisions since they all had alcohol in their system and nobody knows who was driving the boat.
Well, it was HIS boat. Regardless if he was driving or not, he should have stepped up and avoided the situiation, no?

(But I do think the likelihood was high that he was driving since it was his boat and he "wanted to blow off steam").

I read a report that someone told the investigators that he spoke to Fernandez on the phone right before the accident and he was heard giving directions to someone else. I doubt we'll ever find out the truth.

I'm with fantasycurse.   Why do people see this as a tragedy?  No, I don't want anyone to die.  But the guy basically committed suicide.  And his friends knew what they were getting into.  His decision, and he died from it.

Tragedy is kids not having food or getting educated.  Or growing up in slums.  Or someone getting cancer.  Or a family getting killed in a car accident.  Things that happen due to circumstances.

Tragedy is not someone making a stupid conscious decision and paying for it.

In my younger and dumber days, I got into a vehicle (sadly on more than one occasion) with a drunk friend driving.  It was his car, but my decision to get in the car was all mine.  I knew he was drunk and I got in anyway.  Had something tragic happened, if I were injured or worse, that would be on me, not him.  In fact, had I stepped up and said something to him about it, there's a possibility he would have had second thoughts about driving in that state as well. We all make choices, and sometimes those choices have terrible consequences.  Regardless of who was driving the boat, each person on it made their own bad decisions and sadly it cost them dearly.

I believe it is considered tragic in the sense of someone so talented dying so young. And let's face it, we tend to glorify professional athletes, so when one of them dies so young, regardless of the circumstances, it is considered tragic that such a life was cut short.

Driving under the influence has consequences.

Glad it was only them that got killed.

Really tired of people putting others lives at risk with their dumb ### decisions.

That's my main problem with all of this.  Because he was talented and a celebrity, it's almost as if society is okay with his poor decisions.

If this was your average everyday person, people would think "Wow, what an #######."
