Katrina (1 Viewer)

Been following this thread on and off.Just wanted to say good luck to all who have family/friends etc in the area.Prayers for all... GL

Gerraldo Rivera just asked the Hurricane Guru..."The previous Hurricane scares in the Gulf...the actual results did not match the hype...will this one?"Basically Geraldo is wanting to know if there will be lots of destruction so Fox can throw it up in your face that the end of the world is coming over and over and ocer again.

Saw a report on ABC about the oil ramifications. So many refineries and oil infrastructure in southern Louisiana. Plus, there's been knowledge for some time that New Orleans could be submerged without precautions. A lot of eggs in a basket, it would seem.
That is an inherent problem with oil dependence...You are at the mercy of variables you cannot control in the areas where the oil is....

Whether that be something like this in the Gulf, the instability of the Middle East, etc...

I hate to have this thread steer towards oil - but the lack of refineries has been a problem for years now, not just under W

I got back into Fort Lauderdale today from a wedding in Kentucky to find my car crushed under a tree. ####### sweet

Interesting piece on cnn.com about the worse case scenario.  Lake New Orleans is a serious possiblily.  This just sucks.  You know there are some people who will be in those low lying areas, which will almost certainly be under water.

This peice estimated that if Hurricane George had made a direct hit, it could have had 44,000 dead.

This storm is much worse.

I just hope that people have heeded the calls.
At some point around the last time that report aired, the Jefferson Parish Civil Defense coordinator estimated that 1,000,000 of 1,200,000 people in the area have evacuated. I hope those numbers are pretty accurate.
That's a lot of people!

How many people are they/have they allowed into the Superdome?
Better question might be how many they haven't.
I'm hearing they've let 20k in and another 20k are outside. There is no way they can let everyone in at once. They HAVE to check for weapons, alcohol, drugs, etc. They need to plan for the worst case scenario, which is no food for awhile. They don't want people consuming alcohol or to go crazy with weapons once they stop eating.

They are doing the right thing here.
The ones who are staying to weather the storm, I wonder if they understand the dynamics of the situation...That their greatest threat probably isn't the storm itself (although obviously the wind and rain from a Cat5 is pretty damn dangerous in of itself) but the possibnilty of the severity of the storm creating storm surges that breech the levee system and flood New Orleans...
More than that - the possibility of no power for weeks, no drinkable water, no food, etc.
The lack of power/water/food will be horrible, but between relief efforts, and the possibilty of leaving at that point, I think the biggest threat is surviving the next 24 hours...

Are you blaming that on W?
No. But it does seem like some bad policy on some level.30% of US oil production and 40% of refineries could be completely unoperational after this.

But, not the time to talk about these things.
Uhm...maybe its just shallow out there over some oil fields and refineries tend to be close to the fields....I dunno....call it a conspiricy. Its the same shallow gulf at this point that is feeding the 91 degree temps on the surface, which are feeding the storm that is about to destroy the platforms & refineries.

Just how things work. Its not politics yall.

If anything, he's been trying to help the problem by lifting the ban on offshore and opening up the arctic, but the other side keeps blocking his efforts.

Gas would cost a helluva lot more if the refinieries were further away from the oil.

I have a question, maybe I have missed something but I need to ask.....WTF would anyone go into the Superdome. What if they're stuck there for over a week? What are they going to do? And they expect the field and lower level could fill with water, isn't this place going to turn into a giant sweltering cesspool? People will go crazy in there. If this sewage system doesn't work then what? They were asking a lady outside why she didn't try and leave the city, and she says "Because of all the traffic"!!!!! So instead of being stuck in traffic for a day she'd rather be stuck in the Superdome for who knows how long. People are stupid.

Some people don't have cars, can't afford to leave, etc.

Depending on how far out you go, there is an estimated 1.2 - 1.5 people in the greater new orleans area. The numbers above sounds about right. But still that leaves a lot still there.I know Mrs. TF's grandfather decided to stay. He's really stubborn, so it's not surprising, but I don't think he knows what he's in for.
Thanks TF, I hope your wife's Grandfather comes through it OK. And I hope the Superdome holds tight since based on the numbers, it looks like about 10% - 20% of NO's non-evacuated population will be in there tonight.

I assume that most just don't have another option but you're right, some are just crazy. I would literally walk out of the city before staying 10 minutes in that place.

As far as options go, I'd rather be in the Superdome than in my basement during this...I'm guessing a LOT of those people had very few options as far as evacuation (nowhere to go, no way to get there, etc.)...

no. it will be surviving me catching you pilfering through my house. :hot: ;) I doubt ill be back for a while. Maybe for an afternoon to salvage some stuff or secure the house a bit, but we won't be back until power & water are on. I really think at the min, that will be 10 days to 3 weeks.

Drinking some wine with the fam, trying not to dwell on the tv. That will be tough.

we don't have basements. the water table is like 2 ft below the dirt in nola...its why the city is supposedly "doomed".

I wonder if terrorists have considered an attack during a storm like this. Everyone has their attention on the storm, saving themselves, authorities are trying to shore everything up and move the people, thousands of people packing themselves into shelters, etc.One little car bomb and the storm will be an afterthought. :no:Sorry if this adds more dread to an already dour situation, but the recent posts on guns and alcohol in the dome and someone freaking out, etc, just popped this thought into my head. Hopefully there aren't any terrorists reading this board and I've just given them an idea. :tinfoilhat:

I can understand that, and feel bad for the people that have no other option. I can't imagine some of the riff raff staying there. If anyone is just too lazy to sit in traffic though, they are nuts.

I hear you Mr. Ham. But the sad reality is many can't. We're dealing with masses here. A great many of these people simply don't have the means to just drive out of town.Hang tough people. Thoughts and prayers to you all who are connected to this.

I realize that some people are stuck and my thoughts are with EVERYONE in the path of this.I'm just saying that if you had a chance and the means to get out and traffic was the reason you decided to stay, I think you've got a screw or two loose.
I understand.J

It's puzzling how some people operate. When we had an ice storm a few years ago, some people were out of power for as long as a week. A guy I worked with.....professional, otherwise at least reasonably intelligent, obviously $ should not be a huge issue.....took his wife and kids to a shelter for several days. He still came to work but at the end of the day, he went back to the shelter. I'm sorry, that's just flat out nuts. Stay with friends/family or rent a hotel. If the hotels are booked (and I don't think they all were), drive to Buffalo or Syracuse. Or buy a generator and stay home. Just very, very strange that someone like him would opt for the shelter route. Clearly a screw or two loose.

WC just said that Katrina should still be a tropical storm when it reaches Nashville. Good thing you have boats, eh Joe? lolBe safe and wear your rubbers! Er, I mean galoshes, raincoat, etc.

every person i know that was able too and not part of the emergency response team forced to stay got out of the city at this point. We have covered this before, but its worthy of rehashing. NO is a very poor city. Nearly 3rd world in places. I'm sure more than 10% of the city live so far below the poverty line, they couldn't even afford a bus ticket, much less hitch a ride with their hip young college roommate. Some of my own staff had to beg others for rides....that in part to them being broke and part for only owning a bike, or they may have been scrambling for shelter.

We only had 1 -2 days to make the descision....most new orleanians didn't even know about the storm until Friday afternoon. Mayor didn't say "get out" officially until this morning. I'm old & OCD...I was ready. My tank was filled Thursday night. I watch the weather like nobodies business. I WAS LUCKY. I watched this storm from before it was TD 10, when it became TD 10, when it diminished, then reformed as TD 12 & eventuall TS Katrina, to the first landfall thru now. I'm a weather geek. And I bought a new car that I wasn't afraid to take on the evac....during Ivan I had to rent one because my old car wouldn't make the drive.

Know the situation before you judge it please. Plain & simple, most of the poor souls in the dome & still in the city had no choice. The ones that did have the choice & stayed....thats just ignorance at its finest.

Anyone see the dolphins in the hotel swimming pool on CNN. Things going on you never think of in these situations. Also saw on CNN report that 12,000 are in the Superdome and another couple thousand are waiting to get inside...

I hate that I feel that the best I can hope for in my prayers is that tomorrow is only a bad day. Hoping that we are only talking about billions of dollars, and not hundred [or worst] lives lost on Tuesday.Good luck to everyone in the path, whether directly or through loved ones.

I don't know about a lot of you, but when I started checking e-mail today and saw the National Weather Service warning about this storm, it seemed horrible enough. There's always an instinct to mix humor with concern. The more I've read about this and the more the reality sets in about how bad this is, the more I am seriously starting to feel a bit more like I did the morning of 911 as I'm watching the TV coverage.
They know this makes good tv. They are playing on that. Its a bad storm and all, but give me a break with this coverage already. I want to see whats happening, but I've heard about contra flow 10000 times today.
I'm 34. This isn't like any other storm, even Andrew, in my lifetime. It feels more like the storms of lore, the ones my grandparents talk about with reverence. The ones our generation doesn't yet know how to respect.
Im the same age. You are right. But don't sell andrew short...he destroyed Homestead. I was in NO that night when it brushed us...had diminished big time, but still cause some nice damage to the area.
The tsunamis in December were maybe my generation's first serious indication of what nature can do and how indiscriminate and beyond limits its wrath.
Then they don't really remember Andrew or Mt. St. helens. Of course neither had massive loss of life, but i remember as a 9 year old how incredible mother nature was. I also lived through Frederic, which was pretty darn bad.
I'm seriously afraid that this may be our second.I really, truly hope I have an exaggerated sense of this. But to me, there is an exponential difference between a Category 3 and 5 Hurricane in the same way there is between a 6 and 8 earthquake.
yes. its scary as hell & ill probably lose everything except our lives. oh well...its just stuff. Don't sell out my city though...shes a tough old lady with a real soul. Nawlins will be back!
Because the news has made every Category 3 seem like the second coming, I just feel many don't have a perspective of what a storm of this magnitude, coming ashore in a major city, can do.
Nobody our age does. Has any major city every been mandatorily evacuated in this country? Camille killed a bunch of people, but there really wasn't that much of a population there. Andrew missed Miami. Mt. St. Helens blew up some pine trees (ive been there a few times...its jaw dropping). But don't believe all the hype you are hearing & reading. It will be really bad, but lets wait & see exactly what happens before we get any more excited about the situation.I still think its a Red State thing. God hates red states.

We had a storm a couple of weeks ago here and it caused a leak in my bathroom. I frantically cleaned and plugged the hole and all that and it sucked. I can't possibly fathom having to uproot my entire life and travel great distances so I'm not there when my home gets demolished.I guess my point is I'm a giant lazy wuss and those that are weathering this are better than me. I've just now started paying attention to this thing because I was out of town at a wedding and only got back to the desert a bit ago, but damn...this looks pretty bad. I got nothing. Good luck all.

please give me an update. where are Tipsy and the other NO FBGs right now?
im in pensacolamy friends squirrels (near birmingham), domepatrol (upper Louisiana), wookiebooger (Pittsburgh...just moved away 2 weeks ago), and Mrs Tipsy (hey...shes right here) are all ok.

Pretty much everyone I know is gone.

Approx 1.2 million people evacuated - That has to be the largest evacuation of a metropolitan area in the US, ever.
