Okay, guys... had a chat with the higher-ups at my restaurant, and for once it's good to work for a faceless, shamelessly self-promoting, evil corporation.

I work at Kincaids in Redondo Beach, CA. It's part of a large group of restaurants owned by Restaurants Unlimited Incorporated - RUI. RUI owns Palomino, Clinkerdagger, Simon and Seaforts, etc.

At the very least, Kincaids is doing this, but I believe that the entire corporation will be doing it. Check here to find a location near you which is owned by RUI.

On September 27, RUI will be having a "Dining for America" night. All profits for the night will be donated to relief efforts in the South. All profits.

When we did this for September 11th, we raised millions of dollars. Same with the Tsunamis. Now it's time to send some money to the South.

I'm not asking you guys to go to New Orleans with a bucket and start bailing.

I'm not asking for you to even donate all of your money to FEMA.

Just go out to eat on September 27th at a restaurant that will be joining in. You get food at the normal price, your server will probably be working for no wage (we have the option, and all of us working in Redondo are taking it, of donating all wages to charity as well), and every dime that would go into the restaurant's pocket for profit goes to the cause.

Go out to eat on September 27th. Eat a lot. And order stuff that's high profit margin (at Kincaids, for instance, the Dinner Specials - particularly the fish - are the highest profit margin). It's all really good food, I promise.
 Very cool. For the first time in years I actually wish I lived NEAR a restaurant chain. That's a seriously great thing for the restaurant chain to do.

I know. And the people who run the corporation are really very good people who treat their employees well. I make digs at the company all the time for being a giant conglomerate, but really, I haven't seen a restaurant that cares this much since... well, since I was waiting tables in New Orleans.

This is spiraling out of control. I cannot believe what im reading or seeing anymore.

City not safe for anyoneThursday, 3:45 p.m.Across the city Thursday, the haunting fear of flooding wasreplaced by a raw fear for life and public safety.Navigating the St. Thomas area of the Lower Garden District in an SUV,Times-Picayune reporter Gordon Russell, accompanied by a photographer from The New York Times, described a landscape of lawlessness where he feared for his life and felt his safety was threatened at nearly every turn.At the Superdome and Marc N. Morial Convention Center, Russell saidthrongs of hungry and desperate people displaced by the flood overwhelmed the few law enforcement or miliatary personnel present."There was no crowd control," Russell said. "People were swarming. It was a near riot situation. The authorities have got to get somemilitary down here to get control of the situation."Russell witnessed a shootout between police and citizens near theConvention Center that left one man dead in a pool of blood. Police, perhaps caught off guard by their sudden arrival on the scene, slammed Russell and the photographer against a wall and threw their gear on the ground as they exited their SUV to record the event. The journalists retreated to Russell's home Uptown where they hid infear. They planned to flee the city later today.Almost everywhere Russell went Uptown, one of the few relatively dryareas in Orleans Parish, he said he felt the threat of violence."There is a totally different feeling here than there was yesterday(Wednesday)," said Russell, who has reported on the aftermatch of Hurricane Katrina since the storm devastated the city on Monday. "I'm scared. I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm getting out of here."

I think they're probably hiring managers for the new one in Carmel, Indiana. Slight drawback, however - you'd have to live in Carmel, Indiana.I have a server position open right now in Redondo if you want to spend a little time in SoCal.

This is like a movie. No....this IS a movie right now. The Gulf is a post-apocolyptic war zone where gangs, swat teams, and mobs run through the streets murdering for food, shelter, water, and guns.

I can't get over how bad Mississippi Gulf Coast got hit.

I have a question for anyone who might know. Will they list the names of those who died in Mississippi? We still haven't heard from our client and if they post the names, I would like to know if she's on it (hopefully not).
Anyone? :(

Dunno if they're even dealing with the dead in some areas. Heard they were going for the ones still needing rescue first, but maybe that was just N.O.

These kind of things take a long time. I am sure at some point you will be able to find out the whereabouts of your client, but it is going to take time.

Yeah, I guess. Just anxious is all.I'll wait a few weeks to hear from her then we'll start looking that stuff up.

The FEMA Director just said on CNN that the Federal Government just learned about the people in the Convention Center today. They didn't even know they were there.Man.

Just an update for the FBG...

Me and Mrs. WS are safe in Baton Rouge. Still haven't gotten any word on our apartment, but we are pretty sure it is totally gone, given that it was in Oak Harbor, which is in Slidell, right on the lake.

It's amazing how something like this sends you back to square one. We both had just graduated law school and was about to get my first paycheck from my new job. I had a nice office right next to the Hyatt building with all the windows blown out, great view of the Dome and the Arena, and was really enjoying my job. We had gotten our apartment set up nicely and were looking forward to really starting our lives together. Now, its back to the basics...where will we get money? How will I pay my bills with no money? How long will I be out of work? What will we do for transportation? Where will we live?  It's just nuts.
I feel your pain Winny, I really do, and I wish you and the Mrs. the best. But take consolation that you have your education and you will have the means to earn enough money to rebuild your life faster than the blue collar uneducated guy who may have nothing but the four walls surrouding him. How would you like to be a 60 year old guy with a family and what you had leveled. That was truly a lifetime to build, and now it's gone. In no way does someone else having it worse mean you have it better, it sucks big time for EVERYONE. May God be with you.
Trust me, I know who that guy is. He's my Dad. My parents house was leveled by the storm. My dad is a union painter who works for Harrah's Casino. His work doesn't exist anymore either. He's 59--where does he go from here? Hopefully, I can give him a hand once I get moving again.

Things are not getting better:ANARCHY

Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. "This is a desperate SOS," the mayor said.
We should be ashamed of ourselves. The governmental response to this has been a joke.

Winston, keep your chin up bro. You've been dealt an unfair hand, but "knowing" you from what you've written the past 3-5 years, you'll have no problem moving on and succeeding in a new place. And our thoughts are with your father - he'll come through this too.

Hang in there brother!

NOLA folks -Our midwest university's opening dinner was held this evening for all faculty and staff. A moment of silence was offered during the opening prayer for all of you. My thoughts, and prayers, turned to those of you with whom I've become familiar (and whose stories I have heard) here at FFA. Stay strong, guys, stay strong.

Even though we already have TD Lee & TD 14 in the Atlantic...this is much more concerning to me.

Development by the BahamasAn area of concentrated clouds has developed northeast of the Bahamas, but the wind shear is too high here now for any tropical development to occur. However, the shear will decrease over the next few days so that by Sunday or Monday tropical depression could develop in the waters between the Bahamas and Bermuda. This is the same location that Katrina developed. This development would occur at the tail end of a cold front that is expected to push off of the East Coast. The latest GFS model run is showing two possible areas of formation, one near Bermuda, and one near the east coast of Florida. If a depression does form near the east coast of Florida, the likely track would be across Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. If formation occurs closer to Bermuda, the likely track would be northeastward away from land. I think it is unlikey that two systems would form in the this region; the energy for storm formation will probably concentrate in one area and create one storm. Let's hope that if this occurs, the formation region will be closer to Bermuda and the storm will head out to sea.

Check out ariel shots of your house here

You have to take a stab in the dark at the pictures, but we were able to locate my parent's house, and it looks like there was no damage
no shots like that of uptown eh? how ya holdin up tiger fan?
Doing ok I guess. Right now there are 6 of us here @ Ft. PolkMy brother and his wife - my brother is an Army Ranger and he is on call 24/7 on whether his unit will be going down the new orleans

My mom and dad - my mom works for the Federal Reserve in New Orleans....she's hearing really scary things from the 2 people left in the building downtown. She's getting a corporate house in Birmingham next week, so she and my dad (retired) will be going there.

Me and my wife - My wife needs to make a 30/60 day plan of where she will be. She doesn't have to be @ work for 30 days, but she needs to determine where she will be. My work hasn't made a decision yet about what's going on - so the wife is going crazy here b/c she wants us all to be together. And her side of the family is all over the place

I do not want to sound selfish (which I feel I might be, considering wtf is going on - but it's nice to have a place to vent.) - as I'm extremely glad that we all still have our jobs and places to stay - but it's getting pretty hectic on the personal side....

Hope you guys are doing ok

Oh, and I just spoke to CRDRJoe - he's going into New Orleans tomorrow w/the Coast Guard. He said it's going to be really scary.....so please pray for him.

One more thing - we spoke to my Aunt who works for Continental Airlines....she's been stuck @ the airport since Saturday (probably the best place to be in the city.)She said that the Airport has been officially turned into an Air Force base. There are tons of govt planes in there. Basically she is just serving as a volunteer right now.

Buses are being turned away from the Astrodome. While the field level is full, every single seat in the stadium is empty (which CNN continues to show ad nauseum). Fire Marshall says capacity has been reached. Buses are being diverted to other shelters.

Saw that on CNN... Nobody checked with the damn fire marshall before they started planning this? :hot:

 Do you think this is good, bad, or just making a statement?

I feel that it is in everyone's best interest to stick to some sort of plan for population levels to keep things comfortable for everyone involved. These people could use some organization and security. And who knows how long these people will need to stay there. I don't see any need to squeeze people into every available seat at this point if there are other shelters available.

I can't believe I can't get live news right now. All 3 channels (FOX, CNN, MSNBC) are replaying shows from earlier in the evening. Is there anywhere to get live news??

I haven't read the whole thread, but I just wanted to add my thoughts from my home for the evening in Northern Louisiana (I just posted this in the relief thread): Thanks for your thoughts guys. The main thing on many of our minds is where do we go to try to live a normal life for a while? I was planning a New Orleans wedding for November, but we are now going to have a "war time" wedding in Alexandria soon. We have been discussing cities to move to until N.O. is livable again. My soon to be Mrs was teaching in New Orleans Public school and will not be able to return to that job until January at the earliest. I will soon be asking you all for information about different locations. Thanks again for all the effort you all are puting in to this. Being homeless sucks, but the way that family friends and people like you all have responded has kept our chins up. P.S. If the San Antonio Saints go to the Bowl, I will go postal.

Just keeping the board informed. The logical side of me knows why they turned them away, and it was the right thing to do in the long run (if there were other shelters for them to go to as they stated).

Hi Stat,What are they saying about the fire marshall? Obviously, the building was designed to hold 50+ thousand for a game. (or whatever it held - I've been there a few times it's a BIG building)

What has changed? Does the fact they're sleeping there make it different than being there for a game or something?
