Kevin Gregg (SP/RP eligible) (1 Viewer)

BoomBoom

Footballguy
Tankersley came in with the Marlins down tonight in a lefty/lefty matchup situation, and Gregg didn't pitch, so maybe he is getting the next save opp. Anyways, he's SP/RP in Yahoo and has decent numbers...getting saves from a guy with SP eligible is always $$. If you're looking for saves and have an extra spot, you might want to roll the dice...I am. Just a heads up :lmao:

Shameless bump, came in and got the save tonight. Not sure if he keeps the job when Owens returns, but if he's lights out until then they might stick with the hot hand...

Greggs numbers: Last 10 innings he has given up 1 earned run, 6 hits and two walks. The 3 innings before that, all in one game and served as his only save of the season until last night, he gave up 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Also, Fla was up ten nothing when Gonzalez turned the ball over to Gregg.

Even with that outing he has a 2.62 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP on the season and is averaging almost a strikeout an inning.

When Owens first went down Gonzalez took a shot with Julio and if he had pitched well he would been given the job, thanks Ryan Zimmerman. A few more good outings and Gregg could turn into a 25 save guy for the year. Which is huge for teams that either structure their draft around waiting on saves or teams that need trade bait because of an injury or a slow start by one of their early rounders.

and in case the above text isnt blatantly clear, I own Gregg, picked him up a while ago, got stung with that 3 inning, 4 run outing.

What makes you all think Owens is assured the job when he gets back? It seems from Gonzalez's statements concerning Julio a week ago that Owens is not the unconditional closer. Gregg has pitched well and should he close a few more games with success i dont see any reason that he wouldnt have the chance to continue.

If i were an Owens owner i would sell now and get whatever I could in return. Opposite, if you have the chance to pick up Gregg for cheap, I wouldnt over pay, but I think he is a good buy low closer who could pay dividends if the Marlins are competitive.

And BoomBoom, when did Zimmerman get Gregg? I think it was tankersly that gave up all those hits the other night, pretty sure it wasnt Gregg.

Why wouldn't Owens get the job back? His numbers are pretty good, only 1 blown save, 1.96 era, 12 ks in 18.3 ip.

You are correct about the other night - Tank gave up all those hits/runs, and Julio came in and Zimmerman hit a grandslam off Julio. However, a few weeks earlier, Gregg notched a 3 inning save and did fine until the 9th...

' Top 9th: Washington

- R. Zimmerman homered to deep left, R. Fick, J. Wilson and J. Flores scored

April 22 Boxscore

your right. That Zimmerman grand slam off of Gregg was in a 12 to 2 game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Owens will be back in 8 days, so Gregg is moot.
you say this as if Owens has a steel trap on the job. He does not, the Marlins manager has made comments that Gregg could and would take it over if he's successful during this little trial. With another save today, he has been.

Do you have a link where the Marlins manager said "Gregg could and WOULD take it over if he's successful during this little trial"?

nope, it was on the rays radio broadcast here friday.

Since my first post:

4 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K (0.00 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 2 Saves)

If he locks down a few more this week, I'd be surprised to see them go back to Owens unless Gregg falters a few times in a row.

Just personal speculation, but it's not like Owens is an established veteran closer coming back from injury. He did have 3 saves in 4 chances prior to getting hurt, but hardly has the track record of a experienced closers like Bob Wickman or Eric Gagne (2 guys who got their job back when they were healthy).

Pretty sure Florida is going to be closer by committee this year and whoever is getting the job done will stay in that role until they blow it a few times.

Owens has the pedigree, Gregg doesn't. Even if Gregg is left to close for the near future, it won't last. You can bank on that.
yea, ok
Gregg has a career ERA over 4 and a WHIP over 1.3. His minor league numbers are worse. Owens has better overall numbers in the minors and he was groomed to be a closer in the minors. In 2006 he had 74 ks to 10 bb in 40 ip with 20 svs, and he was doing very well when he got injured as the current FLA closer. Yes, Gregg might get the nod until he falters, but you can count on that happening. If you have Gregg, you had best be selling high.

...at AA. In fact he spent 5, count them FIVE years down in single-A. Stop making this guy out to be something he's not. He's a 28-year-old that spent 6 years down in the minors, 5 at the lowest level and has a handful of impressive MLB performance to his resume. He doesn't have the "pedigree" no matter how badly you want to believe it.

....and Gregg does?

Yahoo's telling people that Gregg's the closer, even when Owens returns.
Isn't it embarrasing to list yahoo advice? Hell, maybe they're right this time, but Owens owners shouldn't be dropping him too quickly. Gregg won't hold the job. Owens was doing just fine before he got hurt, so there's no room for error from Gregg.

Well, it's not directly from Yahoo per se:

May 23 The Miami Herald's Mike Phillips reports Florida Marlins RP Kevin Gregg will remain as the team's closer even when RP Henry Owens returns to active duty.

This is my first year in fantasy baseball. At this point, I'd listen to advice written on the bathroom wall.
I was just kidding. It's a long standing joke at FBGs when it comes to yahoo advice. However, they may have this one right for once. I still think Henry will be the closer before the All-Star break, but I've been wrong before.

Well, he's up to 10 saves and still going strong - not sure if he'll hold the job with Benitez and Owens in the mix, but I'm happy with the production he gave me. Just dealt him for Rich Hill, as I needed some SP help and am way ahead in saves.

Wow, you killed him. I traded FOR Gregg today, but I only gave up Gaudin.
