Running back Kevin Jones will be on the active roster when the Lions announce their final cuts today, a person familiar with the situation said Friday night.
Jones has been on the physically unable to perform list with a foot injury, and the question was whether he would remain on the list to start the regular season, putting him out for at least the first six weeks.
Lions officials conferred with Jones’ surgeon Friday, and the surgeon cleared Jones to come off the PUP list, the person said. The Lions plan to take it slow with Jones, but they think they will need him within six weeks, the person said.
Team spokesman Bill Keenist did not confirm the information Friday night.
“We have nothing to announce regarding Kevin until tomorrow,” Keenist said.
Trying to score a touchdown Dec. 10 against Minnesota, Jones suffered a Lisfranc injury — a tearing of the tissues in the middle of his foot. He had surgery three days later.
Jones visited his surgeon, Dr. Bob Anderson, on Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. Anderson recommended Jones remain on the PUP list, according to another person familiar with the situation. Anderson felt the foot had healed well enough, but he was concerned Jones could suffer other injuries because he wasn’t in game shape, that person said.
While rehabbing the foot throughout the off-season, training camp and the exhibition season, Jones was unable to practice. Jones has been rehabbing and running on the side. He even tried an unconventional heat acupuncture therapy in an Asian man’s basement in Saline.
If the Lions had decided to keep Jones on the PUP list, he would not have counted against the 53-man roster. He would have been able to work out and rehab, but he would not have been able to practice or play for six weeks. Then the Lions would have had three weeks to return him to practice. Once he practiced, they would have had three weeks to put him on the active roster or injured reserve.
This might be the argument for putting him on the active roster: Jones’ foot isn’t the problem. He needs to practice so he can get into game shape. By putting him on the roster, he can practice as soon as he is ready to practice and play as soon as he is ready to play — whether that’s in Week 2, Week 4 or even Week 7. He will be back much earlier than he would be otherwise.
If Jones stayed on PUP, he wouldn’t have been able to just jump into the lineup as soon as he was eligible Oct. 21 against Tampa Bay. He would have had to practice for a while first.
It’s worth the roster spot, which would have been taken by a player who wouldn’t have been active on Sunday, anyway.
