Grant is just not producing anything on his own. He's an excellent RB when the defense is spread thin by 4 and 5 wide sets and the OL gives him lanes between the tackles. He just picks a lane and runs his butt off, a similar running style to Darren McFadden. This year, when the interior offensive line hasn't been opening holes, and the team hasn't been playing with leads nearly as often, Grant has looked like a mediocre back. He has little to no elusiveness and doesn't seem to be very patient. He's also not a good receiver out of the backfieldIn the little action Lumpkin has gotten, he's shown a similar running style, but he's more compact and thicker than Grant, so he might get more when the lanes aren't as wide. I think his initial burst and decisiveness make him as good or better than Jackson. The coaches drool all over Lumpkin every time they talk about him, the same way they did about Grant last year. The week Wynn scored two TDs last year, Grant only got one touch, but it was a good one, and the coaches comments showed that they took notice:1 carry, 3 catches in one game and he is forcing a committee?Lumpkin looks good enough to force his way committee right now. Sorry Ryan Grant owners.
Grant had five touches on the year in three games when Bennett said that. What has Bennett (and McCarthy) said about Lumpkin? It's questionable how much the Packers will run against the Vikings and their third-ranked rush defense Sunday, but Grant is the kind of slasher who might be able to find a hole or two. He's at least as good as Wynn as a receiver and probably better, so Bennett said the Packers would have no hesitation starting him.
"Oh yeah, certainly," Bennett said. "Every time the kid gets an opportunity he does a good job. He's making the most of his opportunity."
“He can perform in all the situations,” Bennett said. “He does a good job with the pass protection, the run game obviously and he has good hands out of the backfield. This kid is coming on. Every time he’s gotten an opportunity, he’s made the most of it.”
Though McCarthy typically does not discuss playing-time specifics, he did not hesitate when asked if Lumpkin had earned more opportunities.
“Absolutely,” McCarthy said. “I can’t say enough about him. I feel like I say the same thing every time you ask about Kregg Lumpkin, but he has taken advantage of every opportunity he has been given here. He had a plus performance in the opportunities he had. He’s physical. He was involved in some special-teams snaps that he was physical. There are some technical things that he can learn from, and he’ll improve on. I definitely felt he improved on an individual basis, and he contributed, and I feel very comfortable going with all three running backs.”

In week 2, Grant got 15 touches, Jackson 8, and Lumpkin 4.I think when all three are healthy (Lumpkin's been banged up). You're going to see a split along those lines. Looks like a committee to me.Grant just isn't THAT much better than Jackson and Lumpkin on this version of the Packers. If Rodgers really can't go, it gets even worse. Green Bay likes what they have in all three RBs, and they'll use all three. What has Grant done to show that he deserves to be the clear featured back this year?Full blown RBBC though right?Lumpkin has gotten how many carries?Jackson?Grant?
Grant has been banged up too...yet he is still getting the carries.Jackson has been fine and had 1 carry. 1. 2 receptions...and could have had another if he had not decided to give it to Tampa instead. If Rodgers cannot go, I expect Jackson to get some more carries as they will try to run much more and may not want to push Grant that much. That said...Grant will still get around 20 carries if they can...and Jackson probably won't break the 10 mark with Lumpkin maybe adding a carry or two. This is hardly going to be a full blown RBBC and has not shown to be now several weeks after the prediction was made.In week 2, Grant got 15 touches, Jackson 8, and Lumpkin 4.I think when all three are healthy (Lumpkin's been banged up). GB is NOT a RBBC. Lumpkin & Jackson are both terrible. Honestly, they've ALL looked terrible. And most of the stats that Lumpkin & Jackson have been situational stats. 3rd and 13, rushing for 7 yards looks good on paper, but useless in the long run. Grant has the BIG contract. It's like when Priest Holmes was in Baltimore and playing for $500K and Jamal Lewis was playing for $5 million. They're going to use Grant either way and Jackson & Lumpkin can't stay healthy either.Blame the OL not any of the players, but they have ALL been real bad. I'm not even sure Lumpkin and/or Jackson is 100% healthy either.Grant is back to full strength. It took until week 8 for the Pack to give Grant a shot to start last year even though they were talking him up after week 2. His contract is not all that BIG.Up to 30 million sounds great. But his base pay for 2008 is $750,000, he got a $3mil signing bonus. Gets another bonus of $500,000 at the end of the year I think.Everything else for this year is on performance. $1mil bonus for 1000 yards rushing. $4mil for 1500 yards rushing. But those would be 2009 bonuses.Now...some could buy into the old tinfoil hat theory that they won't run him as much because they don't want to pay him. But I don't think McCarthy cares how much Grant will get paid if he is running that well all year. And you have to blame Grant some too.GB is NOT a RBBC. Lumpkin & Jackson are both terrible. The trend may be to keep it the same...but it's broke, Grant isn't producing like he was expected to. I see it being a similar situation to last year when BJax was starting out, line struggled to make room, he got hurt, line seemed to put things together and enter a healthy Grant. I think the difference is, they have seen what Grant can do. So...because I said "have seen" rather than "had seen" you are going to nit pick?It was obvious I was talking about they knew because of what Grant did last season...that is why they are giving him more leeway with it...rather than last year with Grant who was not given as much leeway because they knew nothing about him other than college (oh, and he got hurt which is why he lost his job in the first place anyway). But you used present tense for Grant and past tense for Jackson. Is Wynn or Jackson the choice here?Everyone's so quick to write off Ryan Grant... the guy really didn't play in any preseason games. So weeks 1-4 were his "preseason." Not to mention he's battled a hamstring injury. Last week was his first week actually healthy and after a couple games to shake the rust off. I'm just as frustrated as the next Grant owner/Packer fan, but give the guy some time. In 8 weeks he was a top 10 RB last year. The hourglass isn't empty on him yet
