Kyle Orton - Bear's starting qb? (1 Viewer)

I was listening to Wscr 670 am sportsradio out of Chicago and just heard Hub Arkush say that Kyle Orton will be the starting qb for the Bears unless he is hurt. Obviously no link available for this since this was radio. Suprises me since the Bears are still saying this will be an open competition in training camp. But I do put some weight on what Hub says, he is the publisher of Pro Football Weekly so he does have the chance to hear some things that aren't available to everybody.

I thought Orton was an above-average to good QB prospect coming out of Purdue. Then I saw him on the Bears for the stretch for which he played. He showed the arm that would compare to Chad Penningtons - the inability to drive the ball downfield. Maybe that has improved, but until he proves he can throw 15 yards I am uninterested.

a lot of QBs have struggled when they first get in the game only to have better success later in their career. A few years ago when I first saw Sage Rosenfels in Miami come in because the QB got injured, i thought he was the worst QB i'd ever seen in the NFL ... he definitely look flustered. ANyway, i'd never in a million years would have thought that he'd be as composed and effective as he was in Houston last year. Sometimes it takes a little time and experience to see a QB's true talent.

i still don't think Orton is the long term answer and I really think Grossman gives the Bears a better chance to win. Unless something crazy happens, i see Grossman remaining as the starter.

I heard **** Butkus on a local radio program recently state that he hears Grossman looks like a champ in practice… for some reason it doesn't translate into games though. - I think Grossman is a slightly superior QB to Orton and will thus be the opening day starter. But regardless of who is the opening day starter, I don't think either player is good enough to hold onto the spot all season. I expect each of them to see a minimum of 4 starts. I hope the running game shows more life this year!

In practice they wont hit him but its not that he's afraid of getting hit. Its that the line doesnt protect well enough for a Rex Grossman to do well. Grossman is actually fairly tough. He's a risk taker who isnt as good as he thinks he is but he aint bad either. That attitude does translate into decent leadership but he's leading below average talent around him. He's got a strong arm but only average at best accuracy. On a better team, he'd look better but he's not one of the NFL's best and his cast is one of the weakest. So he looks like crap. Orton will look like crap too, but he wont take as many risks. For this team, that might be the better option even though Grossman has more talent.

Yeah, I think all of us that have played competitive sports probably have seen a couple of guys that looked great in practice but couldn't perform in the actual game. Maybe it was the pressure, maybe things just moved to fast in a live game etc. etc. - But I fully agree that Grossman is much more of a risk taker (yet more talented than Orton) and that the line isn't very good. As much as I hate the idea of Orton as CHI's starting QB, he may be a better fit in that he isn't as likely to lose games (like Grossman did at times, trying to do too much)... so you could be right about that. I still think we'll see both play a good chunk this year since neither is good enough to run away with the competition, imo.

Doesnt really matter- we're going to see both this season, plus Griese, and probably finish with 'QB to be named later'.

Griese won't play in Chicago, unless he's cut by Tampa Bay.I think Lovie's going to stick with Grossman until he get's hurt behind that o-line. They won't be able to run the ball and that puts it all on the QB. They don't have one on the roster you can do that with.

As bad as Rex Grossman is, and he's pretty bad, he's still a lot better than Kyle Orton.
Rex is vastly superior to Orton in terms of arm strength, and believe it or not, accuracy. Orton is far superior in his decision-making, coolheadedness under pressure, and route/defense reading. So they're both bad, just in completely different ways. Also, Rex's lack of height works against him in both holding onto the football and seeing over his line, which hurts his reliability under pressure and his reads. Bottom line is that neither one has a remotely high ceiling.

To be honest I think I would like to see it myself.
I got no problem with Orton as the starter. Grossman has no chance. His gf left for Minnesota. Of course, this is bound to fail when your WR crew consists of Brandon Lloyd....wtf.....old man Booker.....beat up Bradley....and your best WR is a rookie (Bennett). Orton better start getting his timing down with Olsen and I mean fast. That 'O' is gonna suck. Too bad for Orton.

I live in Chicago & I've seen Orton in every game he's played for the Bears. He sucks BALLS.

I realize Grossman isn't the greatest QB, but he is head & shoulders better than Orton. In fact, I'd say Orton is probably the worst #2 QB in the league.

I couldn't believe they didn't bring in a better backup QB, let alone when they said it was an open competition. If Orton is the starter, the Bears won't win 3 games & NOBODY on the team would be worth anything fantasy-wise. It would be as bad as when Moses Moreno was their starting QB a few years back.
