Just got a call that an out of state league member was killed in a auto accident this morning. We have a 500.00 entry fee that has already been paid in full.

This guy was divorced, no kids and lived to play FF and FBB and golf..I know not the best attributes but a good person. Always paid in full before the season and loved to talk crap. One of the best league members we have had.

Trying to figure out what to do with his team since we do not know his family. Would like to return the money to someone in his family.

Should the league take over the team?

Have someone take over the team. If you have no contact for anyone in the dead guys family then add whatever fee someone pays to take over the team into the prize pool and keep his fee in it as well.

 
Dude that sucks. I think 500 should go to a charity. I would try to find someone that will take his spot for future years. However if his team wins the. The money should go to the charity.

But sorry for the lose of a league mate. Sounds like a heck of a guy.

My condolences. Absolutely tragic. Makes me want to hug the kids a little longer tonight. Tough call, my first gut reaction would be to find a friend to take over his team and donate any winnings back to his family (brother, sister, etc....). Sounds morbid, but kicking my friends tails from the grave would be the ultimate beat down.

I suppose the right thing to do would be to return the money and have the league somehow vote in the weekly starting lineup.

Tough situation. Sorry for the loss.

If the team wins your league somehow, winnings should probably go to the estate also. If that were to happen, someone upstairs would have had to been playing angels in the backfield.

Im rooting for his team, personally.

Just got an e-mail and I play his team this week. I am going to put what I feel would be the best lineup for his team. Then we need to decide as a league what to do..this is unreal.

 
Use his entry fee to send flowers to the funeral if you are able to obtain the details of it. Otherwise, I really like the idea of a charitable contribution in his name.

 
What a crappy news flash for you and your cronies. Honestly if you guys don't know any family, here's two thoughts with the knowledge I highly suggest either finding a kindred soul to pilot his team at no cost OR run the team as a league-owned collective (most guys would steer a ship lost at sea back home if they don't have to pay a league fee and get a cut - a CUT - of the winnings for their help:

1) Put the guy's league fees in a fund you guys can use to purchase a sweet memorial traveling trophy and put the rest toward a nice draft party in his honor next season. Yes, it's extremely indulgent, but really, your description of him as a guy who lived for this stuff would lend toward him enjoying that honor from wherever he is now.

2) Donate his league fees/PORTION of his team's winnings to a charity you guys believe in as a league (keep some for option #1 if his team wins on divine intervention).

Regardless, this really sucks and my condolences go out to you and your mates. We had a buddy pass away a week into the 2009 MLB season and I steered his ship in a league I'd retired from a year or two prior to a deep playoff bid in his honor and it was greatly appreciated by all. Good luck with a tough situation.

lock his lineup the rest of the yr, every team that plays vs him faces the average score for the week, donate his entry fee to charity in his name or give to his children.

 
have somebody run his team for free. If new member wins he keeps all winnings minus $500. If new member doesnt win $500 still goes back to children or charity.

 
I love the idea of using a portion of his entry fee to buy a sweet league trophy and naming it in his honor to be passed around each year. From what you tell me it sounds like he'd like that too.

 
Give the money and see if the league will take a reduced winning amount and add something extra. Run the team for him based on forecasted points or something.

We had a leaguemate pass away in the offseason of one of my local leagues after the first season one time. We named our league trophy in his honor, its a little different situation, but still a really cool idea, and since it seems like he was well liked amongst you guys, it keeps his memory alive... I recommend this, then donating the rest of the cash...

I'd just use an outside source, such as using FBGs weekly projections. That way no one can complain of bias. I wouldn't do any pickups other than a kicker or defense to fill in during bye weeks.
 
My condolences.

If you can find contact info maybe the $500 can go towards funeral costs, as that's very expensive stuff.

Otherwise, flowers, the league trophy & charity are excellent recommendations.

Projected points or whatever the "top lineup" option is on the site you use seems like a fair way to run the team if you can't find someone to run it for the season.

 
if he has no immediate family to return the fee to ... buy one of those super nice titlecraft trophies and somehow change the league name to involve his team/real name and put that on the trophy, will be a lasting memorial for the league for what sounds like a really swell guy

 
This is in our rules. His team would become a "Ghost Team", which is basically the league average for that week.

Based on how you describe him, I would take his entry fee, buy the most awesome trophy available, and name it after him. From now on the league winner would win the "John Smith Memorial Trophy". I bet he would have loved that.

Get me the league URL and a password. Now you just have to figure out the money end of it.

 
Sick thing is, I've thought about this... and I would definitely want someone to manage my team for me, and do it in the manner in which I would have run it - that way I'd have one last chance at beating my friends and get a title. Especially after I drafted the team in the first place.

:goodposting: X2. Sounds like a loved member who deserves to "live on". Add a toast in his honor as well on draft night...don;t force it, just let it come naturally.
 
That's awful news :( Some good ideas in here. I'd say the charity angle is the best way to do it if there's no close kin to give it to. No transactions and doing his lineup best ball is another possibility, though a proxy user is probably best.

If you're looking for a legit guy to take over the team for the season and are willing to agree to the following, I'd be more than happy to do it. When I win the championship:

1. No payment to me personally will be necessary, only a check payable of $500(deceased entry fee) to my preferred charity.

2. I pay nothing for waiver claims and trades.

3. I select a trophy from a FBG's sponsor to be paid for from the remainder of the league dues, to be named after the deceased.

No money out of my pocket, no money into it. I promise full committment regardless of the record and no future strings attached.

Haven't read the thread so this might have been brought up.

In my "money" league we had an old guy named "Froggy" who routinely was a cellar dwealler. but LOVED the draft and the league. He was killed in a car accident a few years ago. We now have the "Froggy Award" that goes to the last place finisher ever year. We have two plaques at the bar that hosts our league. One for league champ... one for the froggy award winner. It's somewhat of a badge of honor (comes with 1st pick the next year).

Find a way to memorialize him if he's been a fixture in the league :thumbup:

How so? :confused: I get nothing out of it other than a contribution to a chosen charity and the satisfaction of knowing that a future league trophy is named in honor of the deceased.

This is an emotional time in their lives. We had this happen in our league as well. What we did is, we took the first week and just all of us decided the best team. The second week we reached out to the family and asked what they wanted us to do. What we found was one of the kids was actually very intrigued with the idea of "Fantasy" and more important that he had friends who would try to help. He eventually played the season out and many of us gave real advice to help him along. He did not win but he had a good time, and it gave him some good feelings about his dad, because we needled him just like his dad was there. It was a good feeling for him and us. But if he just wanted the money we gladly would have given it back to do whatever he wanted.

The charity idea is awful, I would roll in my grave if I knew my money was used that way.

Keep the money in the prize pool, I'm sure he would want it that way. I always cringe when people say to donate a dead persons winnings and would be pissed if I died and that happened.

It's gambling, the money was put in a pool to be paid out to the league at the end of the year, not to UNICEF.

 
If dude really lived for fantasy football, he'd be pissed if the money went to flowers or something like that. If I got hit by a train tomorrow, I hope my league mates would use my entry fee to pay for beer and rounds of golf for everyone at next year's draft.

 
That sux. Especially of you have no other ties with the family, and since he has no wife/kids I would leave them out of it. Someone will ghost run the team (I see Raiderfan has offered, I'd do the same)

Donate his entry fee to a local youth golf program. Sounds like if FF and golf were his true loves it'd be something he'd appreciate. Especially if you don't have an actual trophy anyway, you could just name the league/title in his honor, and let the money go to the kids. Doesn't sound like a guy who would've cared about buying an expensive trophy anyway...

I'd feel the same way. Absent any clear expression of this though, it would be a lil self serving though. I think youth golf (maybe getting a local youth golf league to do a'memorial tourney in his name or something might be cool too. Crappy situation all around though.

If you spend over $10 on a "trophy" that is ridiculous. I'm sure if he would want you to remember him it wouldn't be with an extravagant trophy that costs a lot of money. A $10 trophy would have as much meaning and the rest can stay in the prize pool.

This post has motivated me to add a death clause in my leagues to keep the money in the prize pool in case of death. Just think, if you died would you really want the money taken out of the prize pool? I know I wouldn't.

When you join a $500 league you are gambling for a decent amount of coin and to keep league integrity the money needs to be paid out to the remaining living members.

I work for a pretty big golf company. If you do anything golf tourney-wise. Let me know and I'll throw in some golf shafts (at least a grand's worth) and some hats, shirts, etc toward the prize pool. No mention/advertising necessary. :thumbup:

The commish should run his team as is and any money won donated to a charity that the league agrees on. You don't take it out now though - not fair to the rest of the league.

I don't know. I mean, I don't neccesarily disagree with this. But it just doesn't seem right to me, for some reason. Anyone else feel that? Maybe just me over analyzing it.Anyway, anyone who's buried someone recently (or even creamated) knows there are costs associated with it. If you can find the family, and they are not not well off, then I'd send it to them to help. If not, then I think there are many good suggestions above. I just think that he would want his family's burden to be lessened, especially if they are struggling financially, before worrying about the FF League. I'm not saying he wouldn't care about the league - just that he'd probably not want his parents or whomever to struggle to bury him, if that's what may be happening.
