Lions add quarterback, sign Shawn King (1 Viewer)

The Detroit Lions have addressed their need for depth and experience at quarterback by reaching a contract agreement with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Shaun King, who did not play in the NFL in 2005.Contract details were not immediately available.

King, 28, has appeared in only 12 games, with three starts, since starting all 16 for the Bucs in 2000. But he gives the Lions improved stability at the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Joey Harrington and might be good enough to provide some competition for the Detroit starter.

First-year Lions coach Rod Marinelli and offensive coordinator Mike Martz both endorsed the maligned Harrington as the starter in recent days. But, clearly, the Lions want Harrington to have to earn the No. 1 job, as he adapts to a new offense, and Detroit might not be done shopping in the quarterback market.

Beyond Harrington, the third overall selection in the 2002 draft, the Lions had just one other quarterback, second-year veteran Dan Orlovsky, on the roster. A fifth-round draft pick in 2005, Orlovsky appeared in only two games as a rookie, and completed 7 of 17 passes for 63 yards. Jeff Garcia, a part-time starter in 2005, is an unrestricted free agent and will not return to the Lions for 2006.

Chosen by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 1999 draft, King has a 14-10 record as a starter. He took over as the starter late in his rookie season and led Tampa Bay into the NFC championship game. In 2000, he started all 16 games, compiled a 10-6 mark, and led the Bucs to a wild-card berth. In the following three years, however, King had just one start.

The former Tulane standout signed with Arizona as a free agent in 2004 and played in three games, with two starts. Although he had several auditions for teams in 2005, no one signed King, but he continued to work out while pursuing several charitable endeavors in the Tampa area.

In 34 appearances, King has completed 415 of 738 passes for 4,566 yards, with 27 touchdown passes and 24 interceptions.

MY GOD!!!! I hate being a Lions fan. Look at Kings past, the guy is obviously unemployed for a reason.... HE SUCKS. It's friggin bad enough you have one S***ty QB but 2 and a second year kid who got virtually no playing time last year. Come on Millen, Ford's pull the head out. Here's an idea.... Greise, Culpepper, Schaub, hell draft a guy. What an abysmal year were going to have.... AGAIN.

In his defense

he has as many playoff wins then the lion franchise has had in the super bowl era

Don't hold back tell us how you really feel. :lmao:

Actually for a Q.B. whose stats were accumulated during his rookie and sophmore campaigns I 'd say he has a very passable won/lose record, completion %, and TD/INT ratio. Looks to be a good choice for a back up.

this isn't "sign and play" time of year, this is "sign and see what they've got" time of year.

The average team probably signed 8 players after the close of 2005, you just happen to know King.

Well, that alleviates any worry for me about someone other than Harrington or Orlovsky being the Lions' QB.

Seriously, chill.

This is actualy a smart signing, dependant on the numbers. See how he handles Martz' playbook. He's an extra arm for minicamps and/or training camp. If after evaluation he does indeed 'suck' they cut him loose without any implications on the cap. How many QBs 'sucked' out of school, bounced around the league, found a place where they suddenly came alive? It happens.

Getting hysterical about a street free agent in MARCH is a good sign you need to get away from it all for a week or two...

it's actually a predictable signing as well, the lions were thinking of him even before marinelli got there. he is young enough to put pressure on orlovsky for the 3 spot.. possible the 2. I expect there to be as many as 5 QBs in detroit.

Brees/cutler/ NOT JOEY

Joey

King

Orlovsky

and a fifth just for the freak of it. prolly a fifth rounder or so

when the ganja smoke clears.

your three will be Brees(NOT JOEY) King, and whoever impress martz, the next rook or Orlovsky.

I think Joey and Dan are the odd men out however, and it will take some time to clear the field.

I highly doubt Orlovsky goes anywhere. He is a project at a low salary, well worth keeping around.I don't see Brees in Detroit, I'd like it, but too much $.

sorry maybe not brees specifically but someone in that range.. that still seems the talk... and i thought lions were looking at 9 + 11 (unpaid bonus) for cap room

Orlovsky, they talk on the radio that he doesn't seem to have the Martz touch

That's too bad, I hadn't heard that. He'll get a chance somewhere that needs a young backup. Might sound odd, but what about Jon Kitna in Detroit to challenge for the #1 job? Might be the best he can get, and he's one of the better options on the market.

According to Kowalski, the Lions are $13 million under the cap. Source

I would love to have Kitna here.

It would be a decent signing but I think you're overreacting.

Pounding my friggin head on desk already.... ANOTHER bonehead move.
What is wrong with Shaun King? He's only 28, history of decent play and he is cheap. King is one of those guys I think could turn his career around with the right team.

I think Joey will start the year as the Lions starting QB and this signing just backs that up (and Joey). Unless he is traded (how, no value???), he will be given every chance to keep the #1 spot (this is also per Martz). Believe it or not, the Lions have more pressing free agent needs than QB.

this is surprising to me only in that I figured Griese to be a shoe-in as the back-up/challenger. They wanted him last year and with Simms resigning it seemed obvious. Isn't Griese an FA?

Kurt Warner was unemployed, too. And Bulger. Not that I view this as anything more than qb fodder for camp...but just saying.

I'd like to see Kerry Collins in a Lions uniform.A guy with everything he had in Oakland, except a better offensive line and a capably better defense.

:lmao: True, but Warner and Bulger were unemployed because no one had really seen what they could do. King was unemployed because everyone has seen what he could do.
