Lions RB Situation (1 Viewer)

With JJ signing with Seattle, it appears as if the Lions will not exit free agency having acquired anyone who can offer a serious challenge to KJ. Chris Brown and Pittman are about the best of what is left. Wonder if this was just incompetence on their part, or KJ's recovery is going so well, or if they are content with a rookie? Can they really afford to spend a first round pick on a RB with all of their other needs?

I see the lions adding someone like W. Dunn, J. Chatman, or even M. Smith, and then drafting a RB.

The draft is fairly deep in RB this year, so they could even wait unit the 3rd round.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sign Dunn, but I don't think he has much left in the tank. I think this is good news for KJ, unless the team drafts a guy in the first round.

There are only a handful of backs in this class who could beat out Kevin Jones, so my guess is that he'll be their starter next year barring health issues unless the team takes Mendenhall or Stewart.

I don't think they'll draft someone in the first, but there are solid RBs available later. Someone will be brought in to compete for the starting job IMO. If KJ can get and stay healthy I really like him, but the Lions just can't take a chance with him anymore.

I have a feeling KJ will be starting the year. The Lions could still get a very good RB in rd3 or so to help ease KJ back just in case he misses time. Until they upgrade that O Line I dont see them ever having a very good running game regardless.

From the "for what it's worth" department:

Lions | K. Jones plans to run this week Published Mon Mar 3 3:33:00 p.m. ET 2008

(KFFL) ESPNews reports Detroit Lions RB Kevin Jones (knee) said he is two and a half to three weeks ahead of schedule and plans to start running this week. Jones underwent surgery Thursday, Jan 3., to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

As a Lions fan, I really hope they don't take a RB in the 1st round. Or the 2nd, or the 3rd. Many more important needs than RB. Remember they already have a 2nd round RB in Calhoun that has yet to be evaluated in a real game. They were really stupid to let Duckett go, because now they are pigeon-holed into taking another RB in the draft. And they will totally screw up the pick, and the guy will probably never play.

Here's to hoping the Lions take the best DE/DT/LB/OT available in the 1st round. I must be drinking too much

Given the needs on that team, and the relative talent of Jones I don't see why they'd take a RB at all. It's not like Jones' ACL and lisfranc break have anything to do with each other, so if he comes back from the knee he should be fine. Cobble together a RBBC with whatever they've got until Jones gets back. Not like they're going to the SB this year anyhow.

Agree to disagree. I think there area a number of backs who can beat out the Kevin Jones who had ACL surgery this year. Few if any would beat out the 2004 version, but I am not sure he is that guy. While Jones is/was talented, I am not sure he could lose much and still be a definite starter.

That team has more pressing needs as mentioned...DL, OL, DB and LB...They can pick up a discarded RB vet on the cheap early or late summer. RB cannot line up to play DB and that is where the Lions need help...biblical type help. They cannot blow a 1st-3rd pick on a RB. Please, God, do not let the Lions draft a RB until the 4th round or later.

Aren't they obligated by the NFL to draft a WR with their 1st round pick

Has the new OC retracted the statements he made last month?

Jan. 22, 2008 - 10:31 a.m. ET

New Lions coordinator Jim Colletto says the team's No. 1 offseason priority on offense is finding a new running back.

Kevin Jones (torn ACL) is expected to be ready by training camp, but this isn't a ringing endorsement. "We're going to look around," Colletto said. "I don't know how well Kevin Jones is going to respond to the injuries. We've got to find somebody who's going to be consistent." It sounds like Colletto may even be searching for a back to replace Jones as the starter.

My guess is that Calhoun will quietly lead some kind of committee (including a rookie or free agent added) as KJ is phased back into the mix. This team is a real mystery to me, as I've never seen such a black hole for college superstars.

The Lions will draft Mendenhall if he is available in the first and it will be the correct pick. You don't pass up game breakers!

They will be able to get someone later in the draft or grab someone after June 1st cuts. That franchise has taken that approach to the draft in recent years and, well, it really has not panned out. Mendenhall cannot tackle; block or cover and right now that team needs more help in those departments than at RB.Oh, they need help at RB too but that need does not supercede the mess on the defensive side of the ball. If offensive skill positions were that important, an NFL draft would look like a FF draft every year. However, guys at DE, DT, OL and CB are handy to have around. At least that is how I see other teams doing but the Lions appear to have forgotten this line of thought. Insert the WR joke...again...right here.

While the Lions have many needs, taking the 4th best OL or DT would not be a smart move. If there is a pass rushing DE that could be a posiblity. They have just traded for, signed and re-signed 4 db's in the last few weeks. I don't think they feel they have to take a DB in the 1st. Mendenhal very well could be the best value at thier pick and if they take him there, it would be the correct pick. You can crack any WR joke you want...that's pretty original.

I guess you missed the tongue in cheek tone of the reply.

I'd be shocked if they didn't draft a guy in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. KJ can't be counted on at all.
I hope you're not one of the guys that think the Raiders will pass on McFadden then. If KJ cant be counted on I have no idea what you would think of the iron man known as Fargas.

What about D Ward... anyone mention him yet. Last I check; the GMen haven't Resigned him. I would says hes the #1 FA RB out there.

I agree... the lions canot relay on KJ anymore... a team just needs to move on... I poiinted out in another thread KJ contract status. This is the last yr I believe, and hes only making 2.5M or so. I would honestly see If anyone will toss a 3rd for him and move on.

I would think the Lions are committed to building their defense at the point, and you're going to see them go after a defensive lineman. Maybe Harvey? I think they're going to see what they have in KJ and Calhoun before they make a move.

Sure they can relay on him, just give him the ball and he'll run it. Isn't that relaying? Ok, normally it's baton not a football. Now the question is, can they rely on him?

This should be good news for KJ, less likely to draft a first round RB and he will beat out Bell or any other non first round RB.

Not a Lions fan but I think the problem with the Lions running game has more do with poor offensive line play and less to do with poor RB play.

Per rotoworld

Lions keep Tatum Bell with $1.6 million deal

Lions re-signed RB Tatum Bell to a one-year, $1.6 million contract.

It's telling this was the best he could do. Bell posted a career low 4.1 YPC on 44 carries, falling off the game day roster after the first five contests in 2007. Along with Brian Calhoun, he provides insurance behind Kevin Jones (ACL surgery). Bell could be worth a late flier in 2008 fantasy drafts, but probably nothing more. Detroit may still draft a running back. Mar. 10 - 12:33 pm et
