It's kind of hard to get away from "OF SALESMEN!!!!!!!"On the words vs music thing, I've never been a person who reads the lyrics from the album cover (when there were album covers) or now to pore over them on the Internet. But words do matter particularly when it comes to lyrical hooks. These are generally singable lines in the chorus although a clever turn of phrase in the verse can go a long way.

I'm throwing this pick back because it doesn't fit in my mix. I'll post a repick in a while.Write-up better late than never.I'm moist.1.13 "I Want To Be Loved" Cassandra Wilson - Female Blues
I don't seek out the blues much but they still manage to find me in jazz and rock n roll. My preconceived notion is that the blues is a backwards looking genre, more concerned with authenticity that perhaps it should. I think too many modern acts try to recreate Albert King or Etta James. At best, they come close but it's next to impossible to improve on the originals. I'm hoping the conventional wisdom is proven wrong in this draft.
Wilson is a jazz singer but she hails from Mississippi so the blues are her birthright. This song is a Willie Dixon composition. Wilson turns the gender roles around and gives it a sultry feminine slant. The number starts off with more of an R&B groove but the guitar solo brings it back to the blues, grounds it and opens the song up for the second verse.
Same here. I was thinking about trying to make it somewhat cohesive (and less white than most others), but there was no way. I'll probably make a "Best of Dealer's Choice" playlist or something at the end.I'm not even thinking about my mix, I'm just messing around with all the category mixes. My mix will probably be the usual mess.
If KP's category is replacing Usual 21's, why do we get an extra mulligan or are both their categories available?Eephus said:Rules Addenda/Clarifications:
Welcome Karma Police to the draft replacing Usual21. There's one more category "Song from the album that most influenced your taste in music" and one more mulligan
perfect1.xx (repick) - "Baby Britain" Elliott Smith Babe/Baby
Smith is channelling Paul McCartney here. I could have slotted it as Beatlesesque but I can't draft my category until round 20.
Yes it's much easier to search the historical chart information for 216 countries than the artists wiki page or acharts.us website.KarmaPolice said:I can't find the discussion(s) - what is the easiest way to find if a song charted in a country with a population of 4000?

Ie do we now draft 19 songs instead of 20?
Nice pick, Groovus. A lot of jazz has the blues in it. They were both born in the black culture in the South, and they have always played well together. Madeliene Peyroux is good at blending them.6.12 Reckless Blues - Madeliene Peyroux (Female Blues)
This is my best shot at this category. I realize this might be more jazz than blues, so I'll retract if it's a problem and probably just punt the category. I was initially going to go with weary blues (also sung by her), but I think that's even more jazzy than this.
But she's got such an amazing voice I wanted to work her in somehow. Not entirely her own, as it's very Billie Hollidayesque, but still such a treat to listen to.

I like some of their stuff from the 70s and early 80s. I'm not familiar with their music after that.I like Rush but really only the early-ish stuff, same as a lot of people I guess.
This doesn't make me as moist, but I like it - great song for a what is becoming a difficult category.1.xx (repick) - "Baby Britain" Elliott Smith Babe/Baby

. More country folk than bluegrass, I'd say, but hopefully this works.I just noticed that she is playing at the Merlefest this year, so I'll get to hear her live. And I LOVE Rory Block. Ever listen to her?
So now I can draft 80s soundtrack songs AND Song that influenced blah blah blah and Mulligan 1971 (Not a fine year for Scandinavian music)?Added KP's category on top of Usual's since people had already drafted 80s soundtrack songs. If KP's category is replacing Usual 21's, why do we get an extra mulligan or are both their categories available?Eephus said:Rules Addenda/Clarifications:

I think the category is fine and you've made the chart criteria very clear.zamboni said:When throwing out the category, I figured that most people would be looking at 60s through the mid-90s (at the latest) for albums. I wasn't the biggest Cobain fan out there, but I do like a few songs, and anytime Leadbelly gets covered that deserves my attention. Besides, how many acoustic songs are there that have screaming in them? Not too many.
Have you seen his musical tastes/themes? Let him post from the other side of the date line, he's sniping no one.Would midnight local time be giving too much of an advantage to JML?Rule changes were posted repeatedly in red. Damnit, man.So did it get decided to do the one a day thing, or are we going in order again?

Yeah, one per day. Though I'm not sure of the start time. Think I jumped the gun this morning.

It's just a pain for me to find a deep cut from Ace of Base - The Sign, unless someone else can find a Scandanavian album that went to number 1
Was #1 at balding rate - now its kind of "game over" for him. Looked at it for #1 album, deep tracks but it was mined pretty thoroughly for singlesCategory: Beatlesesque

People may not like this song but I love it. This could easily fit within the Sgt. Peppers album and fit very nicely.
These guys were damn good for awhile, though I can't say I ever had any of their albums. MTV was new and many of us were glued to it when vegging out and/or partying. Kind of the precursor to singles shuffled as opposed to full album listening prior to MTV.

Not gayAnother category that I'm pretty thin on....but I'll gladly take any chance to pick a Jenny Lewis song. More country folk than bluegrass, I'd say, but hopefully this works.
6.03 - Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins - "Rise Up With Fists" (Bluegrass/Folk)
Are you really that pure, sir?
Thought I saw you in Vegas
It was not pretty....
But she was (not your wife)
But she will wake up wealthy
And you will wake up 45
And she will wake up with baby
There but for for the grace of god go I
Are you moving Glenn Tipton to Athletes?I will update tonight with links:
5.xx: Funkadelic - Super Stupid (1971)
6.xx: White Stripes - Suzy Lee (person's name)
I didn't see this, but I think we got it ironed out, but haven't seen anything in the category yet.So does this mean music that gives us chills, or is chill bumps/goosebumps a genre?Google tells me that they're goose bumps. Never heard that before. What the hell is chill bumps?

"Don't Think Twice" by her absolutely has elements of the blues in it. Her voice mourns the blues in that song, plus as you noted it is accompanied by a blues organ. I'm surprised it's even in question if it has blues in it.They are using a Hammond b3 blues organ in the song + Susan's bluesy voice, and to me that is elements of the blues. I said a song doesn't have to be pure blues, but it needs to have elements of the blues in it.I've seen Derek a dozen times and half of them with Susan. I'm pretty sure neither of them would call that a blues song, or even a blues related song. She's been covering it forever and calls it a folk song live. I don't know what you're hearing, but it's cool. That's why I asked early if a blues singer was good enough.I know Bonzai's pick isn't blues flavored, but he must think there is something there. He didn't ask me. If I were judging the category his would be at the bottom (sorry Bonz) right now. If you are referring to Tim's as the other, Susan Tedeschi is a blues singer, and I can hear some blues in Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.Agree here, but two others in this category... I'm not hearing anything related to blues. I cheated on the gayfolk thing so I'm not criticizing, just commenting.I'm good with it. The AS weave a lot of blues into their music, and Brittany can really let loose in their live shows.Subject to tentative approval from Simey....

Definitely an underrated band - highly recommend their debut The Hurting.
