\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (2 Viewers)

This is awesome. Of course, I'm 51 and #2 is 5. Not an option. Babysitters are.

Another 3-5 years and #1 will be old enough to take to shows. But that would be more weird than going solo, amiright?
A friend of mine takes her kid (who is almost 5) with her to shows. Most of the shows are outdoors, and the kid can run around, and sleep on a blanket if he gets tired. She did take him inside a place to see Hayes Carll, but she left early to take him to bed. It annoyed her husband that she made excuses not to get a babysitter for the Hayes Carll, but the kid does well at the outdoor shows.
I have taken my daughter to shows at the Prospect Park bandshell (Celebrate Brooklyn concert series). Same, same, summer evening picnic kind of deal.

This is a picture of her kid last year at Merlefest. Picture He is the blonde boy in need of a haircut, and dressed in a tie dye shirt. He was dancing for the crowd. Behind him was Chatham County Line playing on one of the stages there.

Ha!

Yep, sounds like my princess. If there's music playing she'll start doing interpretive dance.

She's been in ballet since 2 and this year started modern dance at her after school program. Most city kids don't get serious with it until 7 or so, but if she sticks with it we'll have her audition for SAB (founded by George Balanchine) in about 18 months. Taught her how to skate this year and would love to see her pursue that, but at this point its all just enrichment stuff to see what she likes best.

If Princess gets tired of ballet, and gets serious about skating, she can become a roller derby queen! You meant ice skating didn't you?

While one of my all-time favorite songs, no amount of youtubing can prevent me from this selection. From a Smithsonian perspective, this guy is on the Mt Rushmore of American songwriters.

Round 9: Steam Powered Aereoplane, John Hartford - Blue Grayss

You guys are awesome - love these stories about going to shows with your kids.

I'm also a fan of the Cult, particularly Love, though I haven't seen them live.

Resonates.

Round 10: Childish Things, James McMurtry - Religious Song by non-Religious Person (disclaimer - not really a religious song and I have no idea what James McMurtry's religious beliefs may or may not be).

Aunt Clara kept her bible right next to the phone
In case she needed a quote while she talked to someone
In my memory she smiles while the blessings said
And visions of freeze tag dance in my head

She says I'll grow up big if I eat all my roast
That I'll still believe in heaven
But I won't believe in ghosts anymore

I'll put away childish things
I'll put away childish things

Every other weekend, age of thirteen
With my fishing pole and my field and stream
Riding back home on the trail ways bus
I looked out the window till I saw too much
And I called my parents by their own first names
I played in the alley but I didn't play the game anymore

I put away childish things, I put away childish things

The wolves howl all night long
They won't stop and they won't go home
Beneath my window they run
Probably it'll be alright
If I keep it all locked up tight
And wait till daylight comes

Now my boy goes like a house on fire
He'll never burn out and he'll never retire
And I remember when I used to think like that
When I was young and the world was flat

But I'm forty some years old now and man I don't care
All I won't now is just a comfortable chair
And to sell all my stock and live on the coast
I don't believe in heaven but I still believe in ghosts

I've put away childish things, I've put away childish things
I've put away childish things, I've put away childish things

The wolves howl all night long
They won't stop and they won't go home
Beneath my window they run
Probably it'll be alright
If I keep it all locked up tight
And wait till daylight comes
If I wait till daylight comes

I'll leave you with a Mrs Eephus concert story. We were at a Mystery Jets show at the SF Independent last summer. We took our 21 year old daughter who had come home for the summer. We weren't the oldest people there because Jerry Harrison was in the house but we were definitely in the 95% percentile.

We staked out our spot in front of the stage and waited for the band. During the first song, some wasted chick pushed her way through and did wasted chick screaming and pushing. She got progressively more belligerent until about the fifth song in where she made the mistake of pushing Mrs. Eephus' breast. My wife reared back, balled up her fist and punched wasted chick in the head hard enough to knock the gauge out of her ear. My daughter was  and I was :lmao: . The bouncer came over and 86ed wasted chick and let us be. After the show, we were hanging out by the bar when the Mystery Jets' drummer came over, shook Mrs. Eephus hand and raised it over his head like a boxing ref.

I live in fear but I love that woman.

Animal

Just mentioning an animal is weak suace to me. I'd like to think this category is exemplified by songs about animals. Sometimes I whine about the lack of jazz around here. So here's a little smooth jazz piano piece with an ungay folksy lyric that probably works with this mix better than any other mix I'll ever put together. It helps that it's written and performed by one of everybody's favorite jazz artists.

14.xx Jimmy Buffett - God's Own Drunk

15.08 Fishbone - Question Of Life (Religious song/non religious group)

lyrics:

I saw the God spread his arms
Across the imperfect sky
The clouds rolled across the full moon
Tattooed in the sky

For the eye tattooed in the sky
Judged the planets plea
And I was just a humble man
And feared God in his sight, the Light

A question rose from my soul
A question, I began to hold
A pitchfork pinned to my chest
Will I, I not pass the test?
Will I, I not pass the test?

A disease of clouds formed over the sea
The Angel was cruisin' down so that I could see

The roses in his eyes
He would give me, Lord
The New Age not the winter
The Ice Age was the last page

You must present a P.M.A.
(Positive Mental Attitude)
For we all dance for freedom sake, sake, sake, sake
To tie the shoelace of life in place
To change the mind from a negative state, yeah

A question rose from my soul
A question, I began to hold
A pitchfork pinned to my chest
Will I, I not pass the test?
Will I, I not pass the test?

The Angel began to say to me
As the roses set me free, set me free
You must recite this throughout the land or else
You will be snuffed and canned, snuffed and canned

You mustn't wrong the right
You mustn't dark the Light
You must dove the vulture
You must do or die

Wow, I was shakin'
A question shake, shake, shake
Wow, I was shakin'
A question shake, shake, shake
Alright

I am having a real difficult time with the 3 movement songs

Would like to skip Rush and Prince songs. If anyone watching from the sidelines wants to throw something out there for me, thanks
I'll trade you a 3 parter or a Prince influenced for a Wu Tang.
that is the easiest category
I know zero songs in that category.
I would have better success with a Bang Tango category than Wu Tang.

gonna go chill bumps here with 14.19

not sure what GB was looking for here, but I'll tell you what - if you haven't had the privilege of seeing this woman in concert, put it on your bucket list. you'll have goose bumps the whole ####### night.

Brandi Carlile has a powerful voice -- she's up there with Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge -- but she's just as powerful when the tempo slows and the lyrics turn intimate. On the Bear Creek CD, there's a song like that: "That Wasn't Me." It's about addiction (not hers) and recovery, about not being as bad as you are on your worst day, about acceptance.

To hear "That Wasn't Me" is to be marked by it; the song haunts you. I'm far from the only one who feels that way, and who wants to know more about the song and its author. And you know how it is: ask one question and, before you know it, you've asked fifteen.

Jesse Kornbluth: Lots to love on the new CD, but when I wrote about Bear Creek, the song that jumped out at me and pretty much everyone who's heard it is "That Wasn't Me" -- hard not to have a good cry over it. So let's start there. When you write a song like "That Wasn't Me," are you in command of the process, or are you channeling?

Brandi Carlile: I think you could say I am channeling. I stand firm behind the belief that for me songwriting isn't something that I do or command, it happens to me. I can either choose to stop and acknowledge it, or put it off and hope that it won't fade away. "That Wasn't Me" is no exception -- it came together more quickly than any other song I have ever constructed on my own.

JK: When you write a song like that, do you immediately know what you've got?

BC: I did that time. I was really worried about what the twins would think, because it was so far from anything musically that we'd ever attempted. But I knew it was really special and I kept preempting it by nervously reminding the twins -- who are massive Beatles fans -- that it was going to be like our "Let It Be."
14.19 Brandi Carlile - That Wasn't Me - Chill Bumps

"That Wasn't Me"

Hang on, just hang on for a minute
I've got something to say
I'm not asking you to move on or forget it
But these are better days
To be wrong all along and admit it, is not amazing grace
But to be loved like a song you remember
Even when you've changed

Tell me, did I go on a tangent?
Did I lie through my teeth?
Did I cause you to stumble on your feet?
Did I bring shame on my family?
Did it show when I was weak?
Whatever you've seen, that wasn't me
That wasn't me, oh that wasn't me

When you're lost you will toss every lucky coin you'll ever trust
And you'll hide from your God like he ever turns his back on us
And you will fall all the way to the bottom and land on your own knife
And you'll learn who you are even if it doesn't take your life

Tell me, did I go on a tangent?
Did I lie through my teeth?
Did I cause you to stumble on your feet?
Did I bring shame on my family?
Did it show when I was weak?
Whatever you've seen, that wasn't me
That wasn't me, oh that wasn't me

But I want you to know that you'll never be alone
I wanna believe, do I make myself a blessing to everyone I meet
When you fall I will get you on your feet
Do I spend time with my family?
Did it show when I was weak?
When that's what you've seen, that will be me
That will be me, that will be me
That will be me

Yeah, the Wu Tang spin off is on the shelf for me. Haven't decided on the other for sure, but thus far the whole Scandanavian thing is escaping me after a good amount of research. I am open to PMs if anyone wants to lob a few. Please don't be offended if I don't use them ...not diggin the whole scene at this point man.

Nice! The category is wide open and easy. The idea is to post one of those songs that is either deeply meaningful to you (and therefore may have the hair raised on your arms as you think back to what the song means to you or the situation you associate with it) OR its one of those songs that just electrifies you, and has a physical impact you on you - makes you want to jump up, guido fist pump, violent head bob, etc.

You have three mulligans

Just what round I am picking here is not clear; I will parse out my picks later and update the Google doc

Round 11-ish: Crest of a Wave, Rory Gallagher - 1971

Through rote geekness I've long believed Rory Gallagher to be great, and the live performance of Bullfrog Blues drives the point home with a sledgehammer, but lately when I care/dare to go exploring music, from deep within I'm finally starting to realize just how rare Rory was.

Still near the top of my list of good intentions is to create a REAL Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Memphis (where else?!) and induct all the worthy artists that the Cleveland facility is too dense to recognize.

Oh, that's Zebra. ####.

Zebra is a band, so I didn't blow the animal category.

I was hoping to avoid the additional third mulligan - but I am also striking out on the post 90s instrumental category. Found plenty - just none of interest.

When asked how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world, Jimi Hendricks replied, "I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher."

For about 30 years I've heard he said that about another guy. Actually...

Nice! Was on my list.
Same here, as well as another one of his. Remember him well on the Smothers Brothers show.
Definitely my first childhood exposure to bluegrass, either on that show of the Glen Campbell Goodtime show.

Sad song category, really? I don't have time to sample all eight million sad songs so I will go with the first thing to stick in my mind.

At first I loved this band, but eventually they kind of faded into Jerry Jeff Walker-esque shtick territory. Still this is a beautiful song and will fit perfectly with my mix.

Round 13-ish: I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Cowboy Junkies - Sad Song

Air Force, Army, Marines, or Navy?
consistent with my draft persona
