MAD's ROUND 2!! # 1's have been posted!! (3 Viewers)

So a funny (to me) story about the #17 Linkin Park song. So I had this album in my main car cd rotation when the kids were probably like 6-8 years old. I’d always get the side eye from my wife and have to fast forward this song when we were all in the car together because of all the mother Fers in it.

Well, it was my favorite song on the album at the time (plus I loved singing along to the MFer parts), so I’d listen to it with the kids when it was just me taking them to school in the morning.

They asked my why we didn’t listen to it with mommy, and I told them it was because it had some bad words in it. They started trying to figure out what the bad words were (they didn’t know the F word yet - I had t started listening to rap with them yet). “Is that it?” No. Is that it?” No. “Is it ‘Shut Up’ like in that other song?” No.

I just laughed and kept saying that’s not it Mother F’er!!!

Good times.

Well, I guess Glen Campbell is out. A lot of that stuff is just too "Modernaires" or Jesus-y for me. Also too twangy country. If I can't listen to it, I'm sure not inflicting it on you folks.

I'm now partway through Brian Setzer. I feel so much better about myself now. He's all mine, folks.

I have two candidates for next time so far. Thinking about Dave Matthews and the Cure... DM would be easy for me. 25 songs for the Cure would be easy, and I could probably get close to 30, but I'd have to do some research to nail down the last few.

Funny, the cure was on my short list too if I do the next round. I’d definitely need to dive in more - not as easy for me as Genesis or Beastie Boys was.

  • Song: Thoughts and Prayers
  • Album: The Unraveling
  • Released: 2020
  • Lead Vocals: Patterson Hood

In a lot of their more recent catalogue, the DBTs got a little preachy and political for me – not that I was even against what they preached. I was on their side mostly but just didn’t need that from this band. So I only picked a few songs that went that way, including this one. Patterson Hood had been galvanized by Trump and Covid and Mass Shootings and this track is the best example of the way he had channelled his anger into his music both lyrically and in the urgency of the instrumentation.

Sia - chronological #16 - Titanium - David Guetta feat. Sia

Scoresman rank - 10

So as I said in my previous post, we are now chronologically at the point where Sia has taken a hiatus from performing and recording due to mental/physical health reasons. So how do we explain this song that became a top 10, double platinum hit in the US and did even better overseas? Well as we'll see in a few songs to come, Sia spent a lot of this time songwriting for other artists. This song was originally written by Sia and Guetta for a different artist to perform the vocals.

Katy Perry was approached to sing the song but turned it down because the message was too similar to her recent song Firework. The song was then offered to and recorded by Mary J. Blige and even leaked online, but in the end Guetta went with Sia's demo vocals for the release track against her consent and without even informing Sia this was going to happen.

This ended up irking Sia since the main reason for her mental health deterioration at the time was due to the increased spotlight and fame she was receiving. Years later, Sia would end up acknowledging that the song was indeed amazingly beneficial for her emerging pop performing and writing career. She was quoted as saying this song was the best thing to happen to her career.

This song is the first glimpse of Sia's change in vocal to a more powerful, emotional tone that would define her pop years to come. I'm not into electronic music like this, but Sia's vocals make the song for me.

I have a love/hate relationship with songs like this and there better be a good vocal hook for me to appreciate and listen to it repeatedly.

Very few songs hit that sweet spot. This is one. The one with The Far East Movement and Dev also does that. I suppose here is as good as a place as any to post it. Yeah, I'm just looking for an excuse to post it. Please don't sue me. It's different in a bunch of ways, but it's also relevant. Club bangers from 2010-2011 unite!

I've been conflicted whether to take the lead on Dave because most of my contributions wouldn't be popular, but in this crowd that may be a good thing.

16. Wait a Minute

This is the first of two songs from their Old Train album (1974)

This song was written by Herb Petersen, who isn't a household name, but he has worked with a lot of big names; a selected list includes John Fogerty, Earl Scruggs, Graham Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne and John Denver.

This is without a doubt their signature song, even more than Rider. Needless to say, they play(ed) it at every,single.show. I don't have a lot to say about this song, as it didn't do much for me as a kid, though it has grown on me in recent years, to a point of blasphemy I'll revisit later on.

Dr. Starling really nails the lead vocal, and Duffey's tenor on this absolutely ethereal.

Oh, and I think I may have said that I’m not sure if knew more than one Sia song before this. Now I know, I’ve heard at least two.

This was the team song for my daughter’s softball team one year. It was the first year I was coaching by myself and I had no idea what I was doing. We were the “fun” team going up against all the serious business coaches who all moved to travel ball the next year, and we ended up going undefeated that year. I had a sweet all hot pink outfit to match our uniforms that year and the mom that was my assistant coach was drunk off mimosas most of the time.

Key Lyric -Your hand on my hips, speak friendly to me
I've been studying for years, patiently
Is this as far as you can take me?

Notes
1- This was the third single from the magnificent Junior album. When i first started doing this exercise I expected to take about 6 or 7 from it. As i grew to like the Profound Mysteries trilogy, this album saw a lot of brutal cuts

2- Karin Dreijer makes a second appearance. One of only a few artists to do so. Some great collaborators like Lykke Li, Anneli Drecker, Ryan James, Pixx and Astrid S do not make the cut

3- The band's website describes the video as "a semi-biblical story that takes place in an all nude utopic hippy-world.

Notes
1- This is a cover of the Animal Collective song. Its such a joyous song that Tears for Fears seem to enjoy playing

2 - When I found this EP, I was certain that I was going to pick the Hot Chip song “And I was the Boy from School”, but their cover is a bit flat

3 - The title of the EP features one word from each of the 3 songs. Ready from the Arcade Fire cover (Ready to Start), And I was the Boy from School and My Girls. The Arcade Fire Cover is pretty average.

I finally listened to the #20 playlist.

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Talking Heads - Swamp
  • Jimmy Buffett - Come Monday
  • Tom Petty - What Are You Doin' In My LIfe?
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Prince - Uptown
  • Sia - Soon We'll Be Found
  • The Seldom Scene - Muddy Water
  • Kid Rock, Zac Brown - Flyin' High
  • Against Me!, Butch Vig - White People for Peace
  • Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken
  • Beastie Boys, Fatboy Slim - Body Movin'
  • John Lee Hooker, B.B. King - You Shook Me
Another great playlist! I had to listen to it at least 4 times to figure out which songs to highlight. (This is one of the reasons I'm behind!)

Mike ShinodaJust Win BabyNothing Makes Sense Any More

Nothing Makes Sense Anymore is the second song I included in my top 31 from Mike's Post Traumatic album. That album has been described as being filled with metaphors that relate back to how Mike saw the world after Chester Bennington's passing. I certainly think this song reflects that.

Mike said this about the first verse:

"There was a time when I thought I used too many water metaphors, so I had to stop. It'’s been a little while since then, so I thought it was OK to put this one in the song. When a loved one passes away, many people, myself included, describe the feeling as "being lost at sea." There's a feeling of lack of direction and lack of control. Part of making the Post Traumatic album was an attempt to find direction and regain control of my creative and personal life."

Here is the first verse:

I used to know where the bottom was
Somewhere far under the ocean waves
Upon a ledge, I was looking down
It was far enough to keep me safe
But the ground was cracked open, threw me in the ocean
Cast me out away at sea
And the waves are still breaking, now that I awaken
No one's left to answer me

I think it is a pretty emotional song in the aftermath of Chester's death. The lyrics could probably apply to life situations many of us experience.

Wanted
(here off Live at Billy Bob’s Texas, 2005, but see below)

So baby grab my hand we're gonna make our stand
On the Mexican side of the Rio Grande
I got a little money and a place to go
Where you could live high while I lay low, yeah let's go

(Original version) Wanted
(Bonus Live Version The Refreshments - Wanted (Taste of AZ, 1998)

So yeah, for the second time in three selections, I have a Refreshments song “covered” by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. The original (as linked above) came out on The Bottle & Fresh Horses in 1997.

Why I chose this:
Well, first, I remember some amount of radio play for this one. So there’s some chance you’ve heard this before. Which is the last time I can say that with even the smallest confidence. Even with four more songs from The Refreshments yet to tackle. Still, I think that’s fine, as you’ve probably got a good handle on how much you like from this selection. Though there are still a few surprises along the way.

Mostly though? This has quite a bit going for it. Hard-charging guitar work; even when it slows down the underlying rhythm is pretty catchy. The lyrics are sentimental yet full of fun. By now you may have noticed major themes of Mexico (“Here comes another song about Mexico. I just can’t help myself” another The Refreshments song admits) and passion/love. This one also includes the minor theme of… if not crime, at least poor decisions. That was more prevalent in the two Refreshment albums, but – as we’ll see later – doesn’t disappear completely.

I’m debating between 3 different artists. One, I think underrated legend who I’ve been enjoying some of his lesser known hits; and two newer bands from Texas (one alt rock, one southern rock).
The southern rock band will have more songs newer to people Although I might be underestimating their appeal.

Go for it. I had no idea that people would really like the Pointer Sisters as much as they seem to.

Tears for Fears
#16 - My Girls

I think most people in the music drafts know that I often draft Noah Lennox/Panda Bear, but I never could get into the Animal Collective from whence he came.

This cover just caused me to revisit the original off of Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is awesome. I can totally hear that Noah Lennox wrote this song. The soaring, Beach Boys-esque lyrics, the originality in sampling composition. It's probably Animal Collective at their most accessible and pop.

This is quite the cover. Not many established bands would even attempt to cover Animal Collective.

Talking Heads
#16 And She Was

An "expansive and buoyant pop song", And She Was (as described by Songfacts):
According to David Byrne, who is the only writer credited on the track, this was written about a girl he knew who used to take LSD in a field next to the Yoo-Hoo drink factory in Baltimore. "Somehow that image seemed fitting, the junk food factory and this young girl tripping her brains out gazing at the sky," he told Q magazine in 1992. "But it wasn't a drugs song at all and I don't think people took it that way. I think it gives the impression of a spiritual or emotional experience, instantaneous and unprovoked. The sublime can come out of the ridiculous."

FWIW, I don't think Chris Frantz gets enough credit w/r/t Talking Heads signature sound. I love the percussion on And She Was.
Frankly this is the litmus test for listeners. If you don't like this song, then Talking Heads just probably isn't for you.

And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming

Play Guitar- John Mellecamp
from Uh-Huh- Album

The 1st of 4 songs that will be highlighted from the UH-Huh Album. We've already talked about how great Larry Aronoff is on the drums, but Larry Crane was his guitarist throughout the 1980s, playing on all the popular hits, and certainly didn't get enough credit. One of the few official writing credits Crane received came on "Play Guitar".

Although it wasn't a hit... it did get quite of bit of airplay in 84. It isn't deep or philosophical like other Mellencamp songs... this ones just about playing guitar to get laid... and I mean, that's why I learned how to play!

Love the lyrics:

"Well you can pump your iron and shine your shoes
And wear your hair just right
You go down out on cruisin' street
'Cause you want to score tonight
We all want to strut our stuff
And you really want to show your scars
Forget all about that macho ****
And learn how to play guitar"

Homme 18-16:

18 - Eagles of Death Metal are one of Homme's many, many side projects, variously described as more or less everything except death metal. Homme is primarily the drummer, but does feature in other capacities from time to time. The first track of theirs is the opener off their debut album Peace, Love, Death Metal, I Only Want You being a sub-3 minute blast of old school style garage rock which featured in a fair bit of other media and is a great introduction to the style of the band.

17 - If Only is another return to the debut Queens album, and I think the pick off of it in the absence of any obvious singles (I can't see they actually released a single off the album at all, probably because a bunch of the tracks are adaptations of various post-Kyuss projects, including this track which is a variant of a song featuring on the Kyuss/QOTSA split EP, which also appeared on the earlier Gamma Ray EP from before the band changed name to QOTSA. A track with deeper guitars, it's a simple shortish piece of rock which does enough to get into the middle section of the countdown.

16 - Mosquito Song is another example of minimalist Queens, Mosquito Song's a (not very well) hidden track at the end of Songs for the Deaf, a slower and atmospheric track which is in contrast to the remainder of the album proper with a bunch of strings, horns and all sorts of other atypical elements. A nice counter to a lot of the other tracks I've included off the album, the lyrics from it gave rise to the title of the subsequent album.

Yeah, if you've heard Queens but never heard EODM, it is quite the difference. Which is why I love the selection of Homme - the diversity of what he's done

I won't play spoiler, but I will sprinkle in some suggestions that don't make the 31 cut when the time comes. Love this side project
