Man of Steel (1 Viewer)

One of the writers, Kevin Smith, said, "The thing that bothered me about [writer] Greg Poirier's draft: they were trying to give Superman angst. They had Clark Kent going to a psychiatrist at one point. Superman's angst is not that he doesn't want to be Superman. If he has any [angst], it's that he can't do it all; he can't do enough and save everyone...Batman is about angst; Superman is about hope."
Just the mention of Kevin Smith and comics makes me want to post this again:Tim Burton on Kevin Smith (after Smith jokingly accused Burton of stealing the ending of Planet of the Apes from a Smith comic book):

"Anyone who knows me knows I would never read a comic book. And I would especially never read anything created by Kevin Smith."

Kevin Smith on Tim Burton (in response to "I would never read a comic book"):

"Which, to me, explains ####ing Batman."
lolit makes me think

"giant spider"
I don't know the reference. Is that from Planet of the Apes or Batman?
kind of long
if 1/3rd of this story is true it really explains how so much #### gets made into movies

I love superman and always have. My first super hero, and a childhood favorite.

After seeing the latest preview, I'm a little worried about how long we are going to see "young" superman. I mean we just had a reboot movie with the whole meteor, farmhouse, uncle/aunt, teenage superman, etc. So this movie makes the 6th major Superman film in my lifetime. In 3 of those 6 movies, we get to see all about how superman comes to earth. A story we all know.

So it's difficult to see how this movie is going to WOW me, but I hope I am surprised.

The problem with superman, is that he's basically indestructible. The best film of the first four was Superman II. The reason it was the best is that there were three other guys from Krypton that came to earth. So superman faced enemies worth facing.

While Lex Luthor and his diabolical schemes to use kryptonite are ok, there are only so many storylines you can use.

If a longterm superman franchise is going to be successful, it's going to require more villains from other planets with power similar to superman's. Because there is no way 2012 audiences are going to line up to see an indestructible superhero facing off against puny humans that only have one weapon...a green rock.

A movie with Lobo would kick some serious ###

See to me this is wrong. There has to be some part of Superman that just wants to be a guy. Joe Six-Pack. A wife, some kids, a dog and the white picket fence. And that part of him has to some time be very near the surface. If not then he is truly alien in every way and has little, to nothing, in common with the people he has sworn to protect.

I like the idea of more depth and an introspective superman, but he can't be brooding like batman. That's just not superman.
Really the '70's Superman films (at least 1 and 2) were fairly well done given the technology they had at the time and the mood of the era.I did think they made him overcompensate a bit to the stupid/bumbling side as clark kent even if superman isn't as known for his intelligence like Reed Richards or Peter Parker.
superman is actually a supergenius -- much smarter than peter parker.the clark kent thing is just an act -- he tries to act the opposite of superman, so people won't see through the glasses disguise.

the knock on superman isn't his intelligence, it's that he can be somewhat naive, and has never had to think strategically, as he's basically a god.

batman is built up as the most dangerous man alive because he's always had to scheme his way through things, not having laser eyes and a super karate chop.

Super temperature conversion is a hallmark of Kryptonian physiology but it's not really practical when fighting bad guys...unless your facing Mr. Freeze.

Never liked superman but that trailer was bad ###.
I like Superman, but scoffed when I heard of another reboot...but that trailer was awesome.
i agree, but also agree that i'm kind of done with origin stories... there has to be things they can do that are way beyond that, right?anyone with an inkling of interest in these characters knows the story... and if they haven't there are movies done within a pretty recent time frame that go over it.having to endure another origin with spiderman was painful.

Exactly...I guess the premise is that one day they want this new set of movies to stand alone (box sets, etc). But I hope that the origin story for superman gets wrapped up in about 30 minutes. If we are an hour into the movie and still haven't seen Superman because he's struggling with why his uncle won't let him show off his superpowers to get chicks, I'll be super annoyed.

Man of Steel gets a PG13 MPAA rating The new Christopher Nolan produced Superman Movie ‘Man of Steel’ has received a PG13 rating from the MPAA for ”for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction”. Who doesn’t like a bit of intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction ever now and again? The latest trailer for this has really captured my imagination, the hardest thing to do with the superman character is to humanise him, if they can acheive that then they will be on to a winner.
Kind of surprised they received the rating 5 months before release date

What they need to do is bring in the real big villains. Luthor just doesn't do it anymore. We need Darkseid or Doomsday. That would make a great movie. Problem is 95% of the viewing public has no idea who they are. Then again, I doubt many people knew who Red Skull or Obadiah Stane were either but those movies did well. So get a villain that shows how awesome Superman really is.

Exactly. There have been how many Superman movies? Lex Luthor has been the villain in all of them except two and in those two General Zod was the villain. BORING

Disagree unless they take creative license with Doomsday. One dimensional - and not sure Darkseid fits well either in a Superman move - maybe in a JLA movie. Unfortunately Lex and Zod are far and away the best fits - Lex for the mythos and Zod for the anti-superman.

The past few incarnations of Superman on the big screen have not intrigued me, so I didn't bother going.

This new trailer has me interested, though.

I really like the approach it looks like they are taking. Superman is basically a God (as mentioned earlier), so it is nearly impossible to imagine a singular enemy giving him much trouble...the interesting part of the story in today's world is how people would react to him. What expectations would we put on a being that can accomplish so much more than a human? The story is more about human psychology than Superman overcoming a singular super-enemy.

Wait, you didn't like the massive robot in superman 3 / fighting himself which was awesome

or the fire/solar villain in superman 4 (actually, it's ok with me if you refuse to accept that superman 4 exists)

But 3 was a fun movie

Superman 3 was just on recently. It is really really bad.

the computer scenes hold up really poorly obviously... at the time that was a pretty interesting concept and i thought it made a good movie. It's the only movie that incorporates the smallville stuff

For an amazing talented guy Richard Pryor was in a lot of really bad movies.

Trailer for the new Superman movie looks real good. I'd expect nothing less from a film Nolan's involved with.

Eradicator could have been done so much better if they hadn't made it one big "no-nukes" hippy fest and renamed him Nuclear man. A freakin gip.

Another good one would be Brainiac. An omniscient AI that is responsible for the destruction of his homeworld. Plus it's just a sinister *******.

I am the

This movie is going to rock. Count on it.
I would like to but I have learned to never trust trailers or rumors about films.
I am going on gut instinct alone. I know that Snyder is a very uneven filmmaker, but to briefly break it down:

Dawn of the Dead

Concise, well-made horror thriller. No complaints.

300

I know this movie has haters. But sorry, this is an epic, revolutionary action flick.

Watchmen

A weird, uneven adaptation of a nearly impossible to match graphic novel. Flaws aside, this movie was pretty cool.

Sucker Punch

Again, extremely flawed. But still a great-looking movie.

Legend of the Guardians

This is an outstanding, beautiful movie. One of the most stunning kids' films ever made.

I think Superman fails or succeeds on the script level. This is the case with many movies. But with Snyder, we can count on breathtaking visuals. So that's something. All said and done, I predict that Snyder knocks it out of the park.

I like Dawn of the Dead

300 had moments and an interesting visual style, but it is really little more than a homo-erotic beefcake fantasy.

Watchmen felt contrived, dull and his characteristic visual style was thin and ugly. You could argue that was intentional but it doesn't make it any better to look at. And beyond the style (good or bad) it was really an uninteresting film.

Sucker Punch looked good but for a movie with so much action and wild CGI it was remarkably dull and had almost zero tension.

I enjoyed Legends of the Guardians but I was drinking when I saw it and don't remember much so probably need to watch it again.

Having a great visual style does not mean he makes good films. I haven't seen enough from him to change my feeling that he should probably be on the visual/production end and not actually behind the camera driving projects.
