Man of Steel (2 Viewers)

No reviews yet, that usually is not a good sign the week before. The comedy entourage next week This is the End already has 20+ reviews and many of them are glowing. When a movie knows it is going ot be good they usually want reviews to start leaking a couple weeks before the film.

Hope this movie is good , the last one stunk.
I have no idea if this film will be good or bad, I certainly hope it will be awesome, but I never understood why people put any stock whatsoever in trailers. Trailers reveal absolutely nothing about the quality of a film.

If anything a slick trailer usually is done to lure folks in because the movie ain't that good. I hope that is not the case here.

if the rotten tomatoes reviews are horrible, that might prompt me to wait for DVD.. i'm guessing they won't be that bad though

Nolan is usually money and even though he didn't direct this, the look of the film seems to have his fingerprints all over it from the producer's chair.

Yeah the good ones put out crap trailers so nobody shows up

Who cares if a good film has a good trailer? The point is that no trailer reveals anything about the true quality of a film.

There's actually a Embargo on all Man of Steel reviews until Monday, 10 am.

This comes from AICN:

Nordling here.

I've seen MAN OF STEEL. And that's all you're getting out of me until next week. But I will say that [EMBARGOED] is really [EMBARGOED] and that [EMBARGOED] [EMBARGOED] [EMBARGOED]. Hope that clears it up.

So... enjoy this Nokia trailer. Because... well. Sorry, people. Believe me, I want to talk. And I will, soon.

MAN OF STEEL opens next Friday. Reviews happen on June 10th, 10:00 PM Central Time. Expect mine at 10:01.

Nordling, out.

Can't really read him, but when he really likes a movie, he REALLY likes it. The fact that he can't wait to post his review is good news.

Missed my chance a early blowing this week. 4 of 4buddies claim is the best movie they have seen in a while.

funniest typo in a long time.

Just found out my young cousin saw an advanced screening in Philly. He said it blew him away. He's a film student at Drexel, and he saw it for free with a few of his professors and other students. He's already bought tix to see it again on Friday. I proceeded to hangup the phone once he started talking about spoilers.

Wise move, though we can all probably guess some of the basic plot points.

Haha, but a lot of movies that feel they have the goods try to not show their hand much in the previews. I hope this movie is as good as the hype, I'll be happy to plunk down my $10, was just simply pointing out that many bad movies actually have slick trailers. I'm sure Nolan would not be involved unless this was good, just surprised there were no reviews out yet for such a tent pole production.

Getting decent to mixed reviews. Nothing spectacular. 72% on RT
Personally, I'm not sure critics are going to give the movie glowing reviews, since it's a superhero movie, and those are rapidly becoming more common, and aside from the effects (possibly), I doubt it'll win a ton of Oscars. I keep hearing from non-critics that the movie is great, and I'm inclined to believe them.

Interesting because last weekend a $3m budget film won 1st place in the height of the summer movie season, largely due to a "slick trailer" as reported at Boxofficeguru.com

The reviews are good but not spectacular. In fact so far we have 1 out of 4 critics who does not like this film. I still want to see it but I am tempering enthusiasm just a tad.

Yes but the Batman films were well received, Iron Man, Spidey 2, lot of super hero films have been very well received.

I see. Well, a good review is better than a bad one, in any case.

Yep, shouldnt affect your viewing of the film and I assume you will see it regardless. Others might not.

Agreed, I was hoping we might have a Batman Begins type movie on our hands, maybe it will be despite the reviews but major critics are giving it 2 out of 4 stars, even the positive reviews are around 3 stars. Not many 4 star or "don't miss this one" type reviews.

I probably won't see it in theaters (prices have been ludicrous), but I'm already planning on buying the DVD.

Wait, a guy with Kal-El as his username wont' pony up $15 to see a superman movie at the theater with all its cool effects, but will buy the DVD to watch on your puny screen at home?

you're cheaper than me.. and i've been called the cheapest person on this board

IMAX ticket is, what, $16.50 (no 3D for me)? First run of the Blu-Ray will probably be $29.99?

Just got back. The only word I can use to describe this movie is PERFECT. I can't begin to state how perfect this movie is. They got everything RIGHT. The retelling of the Krypton origins, the way he finds out who he is, General Zod, Lois Lane, Faora(she kicked all kinds of ###), the little touches to other characters in the DC universe. This movie is going to make A TON of money. The soundtrack, they finally showed what Superman can really do when he uses his powers to their fullest extent and truly showed what a Superhero is supposed to be. I can't recommend this movie enough. Best movie I've seen in years. Do not wait for the Blu Ray or DVD. You gotta experience this in a movie theater with great sound.

I would love to see a movie based on Krypton. The first 20 minutes or so was not enough.

You must have really liked it. Critics were not that kind. Hardly any of the major ones gave it much over 2 or 3 stars. Seems a lot of them felt this was the same story as in the original Superman. Will try and find an early AM showing for under $7. It has a series of slick trailers though.

Seems like most of the criticisms I've read are that it's too introspective and not campy enough.

I've had enough camp in my Superman story thank you very much.

Well the series is still in reboot mode so you were going to get another origin tale. And the first one is so fondly remembered sticking with that canon is probably smart.

Yeah campy is what killed everything after the first Reeve film. Campy is not what I am looking for in these movies. I am going to try to go early tomorrow.

Having 2 young children means that movie tickets have to be budgeted for. And my TV at home is a semi-respectable 32 inches, so it's not like I won't be able to see anything.

Exactly. Give me a super hero movie like Batman Begins that takes itself seriously and doesn't insult it's audience.

Leaving in a hour to go see this in 3D with co-workers. I'm really hopeful, but glad the critics have tempered my expectations somewhat.

There is no camp in this movie. I was waiting for any corny lines or quips. I finally heard one near the end. ONE. That's the difference between the Marvel movies and the major DC ones. Marvel has more humor and is campy. The Nolan Batman series and now the new Man of Steel ground the characters in ways that the Marvel flicks do not. For example in The Avengers, when Hulk side punches Thor is a great moment and totally fits in the style of movie that the Avengers is. But a scene like that wouldn't work in Man of Steel.

Cavill, Crowe, Costner, Adams, Shannon, Lane are all perfect in their roles as was the teenage Clark Kent. Faora steals the scenes a few times and is perfectly cast. I want to see more of that actress in movies.

good for a 4 yr old? :bag:

Reason I ask is my son is obsessed with superheroes (all of them) but hes kind of scared of the movies so I generally dont let him watch them.

Sorry for the repeated sentences in my post that I wrote when I got back. I was exhausted when I typed it, but wanted to share thoughts before I hit the sack.

See when you read the reviews closer it seems like folks are just irritable because they retold the story but I think it might be fun to see a little more of Kal El's dad and home planet. I agree also that I don't want any camp either, Christopher Reeves owns a big part of Superman's heart for everyone but we have to move on with making cool movies.

$21M for Thursday, sensational start, should easily do $30M today, $100M+ over the weekend and then we'll see word of mouth. Tomorrow morning hit the AM matinee, big bucket of popcorn, likely skip the 3-D. 21, did you see 3-D IMAX? I'll scroll up.

Superman and Batman are my all time favorite super heros. Batman has been done brilliantly by Nolan with his superb trilogy and Keaton was IMO a solid Batman with both his flicks from Tim Burton (the others were pure crap save for Jim Carreys performance as the Riddler).

I loved Superman The Movie as a bright eyed 8 year old seeing that "A man can fly". In 1978 that was movie magic for me as a kid. The theme music was brilliant and for it's time it was a great Superman movie. And to this day....it is still a good pop corn flick. Superman II was also a very entertaining movie and has a lot of great camp moments that to this day still make me smile. Superman II and IV? Nuff said....ahem.

But I am ready for a serious, grounded, character driven Superman Movie.....and judging by Usuals review....I am going to get it. Superman is my #1 (Batman is #2) as far as stature goes with super heros.

So next weekend (after the crowds go away) I will take my 8 year old son and my wife and enjoy this new Superman flick in all it's IMAX/3D glory.

I'd say the tomato meter is broken at this point anyways. Hell, Iron Man 2 got 73% and that movie was complete ####.

Your son is going to go NUTS. It's a perfect Father/Son movie in that both Jor-El and Jonathan Kent play major roles in his life, and in the movie. Lost my Dad two years ago and the scenes between Costner and Cavill really hit home.

I saw it in Real 3D. I'd go regular IMAX, no 3D if you could. The 3D didn't really add much. Plus I'think it's going to hit at least 70-80 million today and end the week easily over 200.

3 hours until I see it...going with IMAX 2D. Not really a fan of the 3D tricks - I'm a little surprised Nolan let in some 3D effects since he forbid them in the Batman trilogy.
