Marshall fire 1, My house-0 (2 Viewers)

So sorry to hear this. Thank god you and your family are safe.

It is hard…..and I can’t imagine the sheer despair of having to go through this.

But you will overcome and rebuild. I think the most important thing is you are all safe and have each other.

A close friend of mine lost everything in 2019 in the California wildfires….it took him  2 years but they rebuilt their home and stayed in California. Yes there are things that are simply irreplaceable.

But again you are all safe.

God speed to you and your family and getting back on your feet as soon as possible.

If there is a GofundMe please let us know.

Just adding my sadness and best wishes as you rebuild your life.  You have your family which is really all that matters; everything else is just stuff.  It's easy for me to say that, but it's true.

I am very much of this mindset for myself, there are a few things that really are pissing me off that they are gone. The flag from my grandpa's coffin and my grandpa's recliner. I have nothing left now of his. This is the second time I have lost most of my possessions. I sublet a place many years ago and they moved all of my stuff out onto the front porch because they cut a deal with the landlord to get out two weeks early and never told me. They just put all of my stuff out on the front porch. Almost everything got stolen or vandalized. My grandpa's medal of good conduct and the other flag from his funeral (a polish flag) were gone.

Outside of that for myself, there isn't anything I am that upset about.

The stuff for my wife, son, and daughter is what is gnawing at me the most.

This is where the FFA can help. Make a list or start a thread when you have the time and it would give us great pleasure to form some kind of registry to fill these prescriptions. Your peeps may not then have things filled with memory, but will know they come with the love & concern of "strangers" with whom you've built a community's care.

Yep, this place is awesome.

One of my favorite FBG stories is how I had to explain to the shipping manager at work why I was sending a faucet to a guy in New Jersey named Fat Nick.

Eta: and also meeting larryboy

I had that problem explaining about Big Bottom.
I think Otis' Secretary or perhaps Administrative Assistant was taken aback when he got a load of chocolate from Ditkaless Wonders.  I was sabotging his diet, or so I thought.  He left the basket out for his staff and refrained himself, if memory serves.

Got to see some photos in daylight. There is just nothing left. The houses on our court burned so bad you can just see foundation walls left and maybe a basement steel beam or two.

I have never seen anything like it. But I guess usually when I have seen a house fire it is just one house and firefighters spray water on it.

These all just freely burned.

Para,

I live southeast of Aurora.  We could see not just the smoke but also the flames.  My brother went through this last year with the fire that swept through Grand County.  I have a pickup and a basement full of stuff.  Kids games, a twin matress, nick nacks, videos, kids books.  We could russle up some dishes, a crock pot, some poker chips, maybe a lap top.  Send up an SOS with a list and you are welcome to what you would like.

My brother had a shed which did not burn.  Inside it were two kayaks.  They melted.  So too did 500 or so LP's.

Thanks GB. I had no idea you were in the area. IIRC you have WI roots too.

Best wishes in digging out from under this para.  I can't even begin to imagine.  We have an acquaintance in the area that lost their family home too.  Hopefully 2022 will be a better year and something good will emerge from this for you.

@parasaurolophus - heartbroken for you, your family, and everyone affected by this. It just sucks. Happy to hear you’re safe, and please let us know if there’s anything we can help with.

Para,

Let me know how I can help.

I know this may not help but maybe it will…. My Wife’s entire family lost everything in Katrina.  Everything.  17 of them moved into a 2500 sqft house in Baton Rouge, LA with their 10 or so cats.  They are all thriving now,  without Katrina I would not have met my Wife or have our two sons now.  Things will get better.

Really sorry to hear about your loss. Really Really glad to hear that you and your family are safe. If you have any thing you guys need from Southern NJ or Philadelphia let me know. Prayers for you guys!

Hate to read this para.  Especially being so new to the area, it’s unlikely you have a tight group of friends to lean on.  You’ll get through this.

If there is anything at all I can do please let me know. Is there a gofundme? So sorry this happened to you and all affected. My wife and I will have you on our prayers.

Northern Virginia/DC region if I can look/get anything for you. We also go to southern VA/eastern TN frequently.
@parasaurolophus

I'll be driving from Northern Virginia down to Blacksburg and back on Saturday. Let me know if there's anything in that general area you need. Charlottesville? Roanoke? Shenendoah National Park?

Does anybody know how I am supposed to handle the mail? Even our mailbox burned down but can I go to the post office to just get our mail? Do I have to get a PO box setup in the interim?

This has some info from another area that had devastating fires. Looks like setting up a temp PO is one way to go: Link

Anybody know how to get a replacement vaccine card?
Just go wherever you got your shot. They'll give you a new one and fill it out for you.

I went to two different providers, one at a mass vaccination clinic and booster at my local clinic. Here in MN all of your vaccines get reported to a state agency, so the local clinic pulled my info from the mass vaccination site and it's all in their system if I ever need a replacement. Not sure if that'd be needed or if CO system is similar, but might help somebody out there.

You can just p-mail him and give the poor guy his own choice.  It's in the upper right area of his profile.  Super easy.

Hang in there, GB. I feel you on the sentimental stuff. And it's totally natural to grieve over a loss. Even if it is "stuff". It's stuff that was important to you. You know this, but the bigger reality is that stuff really was just reminders of things that can never be taken away. Your grandfather's service or a treasured memory of something that happened. That still happened. And nothing can diminish that.

Rock on. Don't hesitate to lean on us if we can help.

My son was supposed to come stay with us since this is his Xmas break from college, but we rescheduled his flight when this happened. Got my wife and daughter setup with my sister's family in ND and I am heading back today to find a new place to live.

Son was set to fly in tomorrow. Now we have to cancel again because he is on Covid lockdown. Ex wife caught it(likely at a new year's party they hosted which my son was present). Son hasn't tested and has no symptoms, but obviously early as exwife just got her results and with as much exposure as my son has had in the same house, just seems too risky.

A colleague's son has a home in the area, one of the few spared by tha vagaries of fire.  All the homes around his burned to the foundations.  He said there is a substantial need for bottled water in the community as the water system for those remaining has been compromized.  I delivered 24 cases of water yesterday.  Also made a small cash donation.  The area looks like hell right now, but already families are fighting back, cleaning up, salvaging what they can, and insurance adjusters are on scene everywhere.

The whole scene puts one's own tribulations into perspective.

Trying to get there now to possibly find anything. Unfortunately I got a flat tire just outside Sterling, CO. So now after changing to the donut and limping to the nearest to tire place I probably won't get there before the storm comes in and covers it all up.

Just reading this.. unbelievable. And the rest of you all.. I'm blown away. Beautiful camaraderie and brotherhood you all have here. Hit me up if any of your lost memorabilia are from Stowe/Burlington VT area. I'll gladly help you put some proxies in place.

Edit- or maple syrup. It'll sweeten your pancakes and lift your mood.

Jesus, a helluva a week. Keep your head up man. I truly believe if you are doing the right thing - you get paid in return ten fold. Just keep doing it right.

You have a ton on your plate and you don’t have time to order new medals and it sounds like you don’t have your GF’s DD214 (needed to know which medals your grandfather qualified for).

Off the top of my head I know of at least two, plus the medal of good conduct.

Please let me know which campaign he served in (Europe or pacific) and I will order you a replacement set. I have been meaning to order a set for my grandfather and this will re-motivate me to do so.

You would be doing me a favor. I can ship them to your PO Box when you’re ready.

Just seeing this.  So sorry to hear.

My buddy's brand new house is right up the hill from this fire (or maybe it was the other big CO fire?) and his wife posted some photos that were just insane.  They were super close.

Again, sorry to hear... wishing you the best.

Thanks to you and SWC I looked into this and my aunt will be requesting a replacement for me and it will just get shipped to her.

This made my day. Never even knew. So grateful.
