Mat Stafford...Too Early To Panic? (1 Viewer)

Granted the season is still very young, but between injuries and poor play, Stafford is starting to look like a definite bench candidate. I'm considering starting Schaub or Ponder over Stafford this weekend.

Just wondering what others think about Stafford and if I am over reacting after 3 weeks?

I have Calvin in one league and from what I've seen this year Stafford looks nothing like last year. Seems like on every passing play Stafford takes a quick look at Calvin then checks down, there seems to be no shots being taken deep downfield with any of the Lions WR's either. Anyone who drafted Stafford this year was expecting Calvin to pump his numbers up but that isn't happening.

I'd say panic has set in on Stafford owners. Guy in my league offered Stafford & Leshoure for Big Ben. So if you want to buy the time is now. Haven't really watched him with a critical eye but fbg still have him near top 5 in the forward.

I'm actually considering Ponder over him this week too. I don't like what I've seen so far.

Way way way too much panic in this thread, I got him and eli and theres no way in hell id consider benching him for anyone mentioned. If a guy offered me that for big ben id take that and run to the bank.

Stafford is averaging 287 yards per game. Week two was against arguably the toughest defense in the league on the road with the wind blowing. He's only had one game at Ford Field so far this season in which he threw for 355 yards.

The Lions are trying to show defenses they are willing and able to run the football. When/if the defense decides to stop that aspect of the offense then you'll see the deep shots.

It amazes me how many people misspell names here. Whitten and now Mat? Come on guys!

With that said, as a Stafford owner, I'm not panicking yet. Maybe in a few more weeks.

Let me know how that works out for you
This is the kind of crap that pisses me off in the shark pool. Listen, in a thread talking about panicking on a guy, it is perfectly legitimate to talk about who you are considering playing over him in a given week. It gives people some information of where others are ranking him. Please stop with the snide comments. They don't add anything to the thread and make you look foolish.

Exactly. That is a perfectly germane comment that affords insight into how stafford owners are viewing his current value. I'm actually really shocked in the lack of faith. Having just bought low as my qb2 I'm going to wait for a few good games before selling.

If someone envisioned his numbers last year rolling over to this year, they might consider "panicking" a bit.

The touches LeShoure was given last week is food for thought too.

He's on pace for 650 attempts and 4600 yards. TD's are off, for sure, but he is still throwing the ball a ton. I gotta believe the TDs will come, there is a lot of talent on that offense. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I still expect around 4500yds and 30ish tds. Obviously not a repeat of last year, but none of the top QB's are coming close to last years numbers, so it should land him in the top 6.

That trade mentioning Stafford and Leshoure for Ben is lunacy.

Buy low candidate especially in dynasty. Seriously 3 games against decent defenses and while slightly hurt does not undo his talent, last year's performance, Detroit's offensive philosophy, and having the best WR in the game to throw too. Are people panicking about Calvin Johnson's lack of TDs? Noooo. For those who own Stafford hold because you will be selling low. For those who want to upgrade to an elite QB in dynasty, buy aggressively.

So to review, keep your head while others are losing theirs and do not panic.

I'm thinking the same thing and I may try a few offers to get Stafford if possible. Anyone see any trades involving him go down this week?

Dynasty league: An owner in my league traded Ryan Mathews, Blackmon, and Flacco for Stafford and a third before the season. It was a lot, but that was the going rate for elite QBs- the Rogers, Newton, and Luck owners had already turned down similar offers. After 3 weeks, he'd already started panicking and traded Stafford and three 2014 firsts for Griffin, a 2013 first, and a 2014 2nd. The 2013 first was not of an appreciably higher caliber than the three 2014s he gave up (one of the 2014s belonged to the same team as the 2013), so it essentially boiled down to Stafford and two firsts for Griffin.

so it essentially boiled down to Stafford and two firsts for Griffin.
Wow. That is a serious knee-jerk reaction. Even if you prefer RB3, there is no way the difference should be 2 1st.
Strongly agreed, and I'm the guy who traded away Griffin. He asked what it would take, and I said "two firsts" thinking that would just end the conversation. I love Griffin, and was not looking to sell. I was floored when he actually did it. Guy has a history of quirky player valuations, but he's a quality owner who always fields a competitive team and has earned a reputation as a real skinflint of a trader always looking to wring out one last concession (hence the inclusion of the extraneous 2nd). He usually won't deal unless he walks away the clear "winner". He's no rookie or rube.

For whatever reason if you watch Stafford, he is off in the first parts of games,

an last year didn't look good (although the stats were there) early in the season.

Last year early season/late game heroics, comebacks resulted from bad/not good

play early on that left you scratching, then he got his #### together an played the

way he is capable of, so yah it is disheartening now but it is not really different in

these first 3 games this year then it was all last year.(the play more then the stats)

I have Stafford, and while the low points sucks and I wish they were better, I really

don't see it much/any different play then last year so I'm just holding steady here. :)

My thoughts exactly. I'm not seeing any obvious regression, he's still chucking it a ton, and the touchdowns will come around. Definitely too early to panic.

I thought stafford has looked fine. The gameplan, especially in the first half, has been more conservative. Defenses are playing the safeties way back against Detroit making the lions beat them with the run or short passes. The success of the running game has also taken away some goaline opportunities that were pass plays in previous years. I don't think stafford can duplicate his numbers from last year but it is not because he is playing poorly.

I love owners who panic. Which is how I acquired Stafford. Traded Luck and Michael Turner for Stafford. Way to early to panic. His numbers will come.

I think the problem with Stafford is that Titus Young has not emerged as a reliable target. They badly need someone outside of CJ to make some plays.

I would buy low if possible, he's looked shaky at times but he's throwing just as many passes per game as last year with a higher completion % than last year. I think he'll start to take more shots down the field and return to form.

The DET offense needs to get their act together. Stafford should have had at least 2 TD passes and a few more completions if not for some awful drops. 5 different players (I believe) with bad, bad drops.

I thought Stafford looked better today. This loss wasn't on him, he did his job. His receivers have got to help him out. Way too many drops.

This guy is throwing all his passes high. 6'5" guys are having to jump to catch the passes.

High or not, he's putting up catchable balls. If you get your hands on the ball, you should catch it. I'm talking full palm on the ball, both hands, and just not pulling it down. It's not like his receivers are stretching out and barely getting their fingertips on it. Even Megatron had some really brutal drops today.

Yup. I already bought low. The TDs are going to come. Obviously anyone who invested a high draft pick is kind of ####ed but he's a perfect guy to acquire and wait on and flip again when he turns it on for a few weeks.

Can anyone who has watched stafford a lot confirm whether he is dropping his arm on throws? The game I saw he threw one a mile over the head of a WR, but that was one throw. Someone in the game thread today mentioned this. Wondering if it is true and if so, how hard would that be to fix?
