Matt Jones to sign soon ? (1 Viewer)

I would guess the asking $$$ is what is preventing Jones and Harrison from being signed at the moment. Just from a pure talent/productivity standpoint, both are probably better than most of the #3 WR's currently on the bulk of the teams in the NFL. Harrison I'm sure will keep the price high and if no one calls then he'll retire. Jones on the otherhand, I would guess may be more willing to come down in asking salary since he still should have a long career potentially ahead of him (barring he can stay out of trouble).
I can tell you that asking price is not an issue with Matt Jones. He fully expects that he will play for close to the minimum and only wants a few incentives and it to be a short contract. He is in far better shape right now than he ever was with the Jags and is ready to go. If Leftwich wins the job in Tampa he'll start lobbying for the Bucs to sign Matt, though I have no idea how much pull Byron will have in the situation.

I don't know maybe it's just me but I never saw the big deal with the guy...whole lotta hype and nothing but problems.
played really well last season - the light finally went on. Off the field, sure, but on the field there is a ton of potential for this guy.
once he decided to learn the playbook...I don't understand how you can't take a chance on him. Guy has great athletic ability that he wasn't using to his advantage. The Coke bust happened, woke him up, & he started doing/saying all the right things outside of having a few beers on the golf course. Plenty of potential here and he proved once he puts the right kinda work in, he can get it done.Bet Jerry Jones has changed his mind after M. Austin & S. Hurd failed to stay healthy during OTA's...I'd rather not see Jones there.Don't understand why Baltimore wouldn't sign him...I read an article not to long ago, that he has moved into a training facility and has been working his tail off while also taking mental conditioning exercises as well in order to keep/get his mind right. Expenses all paid out of his own pocket. Sure seems like the kid is taking his career seriously now because he knows he is out of chances
He is a great talent, but either slow at learning or doesnt care (and I'm not sure which)either way, I wouldnt want to match him with a rookie or 2nd year QB. I think a veteran QB who will kick his butt when he messes up would be better for him.

All that "he didn't even learn the playbook" stuff is total nonsense, Matt knew the playbook just fine. It is completely fair to say that he wasn't motivated early in his career. But that really doesn't matter much right now. He has turned a corner so to speak and currently takes his football career very seriously. He's been going to WR and conditioning camps over the summer the last couple years and is a totally different player now as evidenced by his performance last season.

agreed, as to what I have read and studied....

What you're saying makes no business sense. Matt's agent is seeking nearly the veteran minimum for Matt Jones? If that were the case, Matt should have been signed in the offseason by a team if that were the case, since the financial risk is very minimal and you have a guaranteed #3 WR on your team with the potential for #1 WR talent (afterall he was #1 in Jax last year). If he continues to have a coke problem, well financially you're fine from an organizational standpoint. How many WR#3's on teams are near the league minimum? Alot of WR#3's are 1st and 2nd round rookies/2nd year guys whom suck up alot more salary cap space than what Jone's would do for the veteran league minimum. I don't buy into this info.

He's just a terrible route runner. That's his biggest knock in my books. He has covered up for this with his excellent size and athletism. I'm NOT a fan of his game and don't expect much Fantasy Wise from him, nor would I take any risk wih him.

At this point is there any real chance he gets back into the NFL, this season anyway? Week four of preseason is spent resting for week one of the regular season, and at this point that's the earliest he can hope to catch on somewhere.

I've had him stashed on a dynasty roster through the offseason, and with new contracts looming I'm going to be cutting bait.

injury to the right teams WR1 could lead to a signing

Does it make more sense to you that a guy with a drug arrest, violation of addiction recovery program, jail time, NFL suspension and release by a team with big time WR issues would holdout all through camp and preseason to try and sign a bigger contract?

IIRC a team can sign a player after week 1 and then not have to pay the player any guaranteed money for that season. I could see Jones joining a team on those grounds.

I really don't understand why the Redskins haven't gone after this guy. He's a big, fast guy which is what they've been trying to get the last two years. He'd be an awesome #2 across from Santana Moss and great in the redzone.

There's a certain #1 WR in Dallas that has an injury right now....

Read my lips: Matt Jones will NOT be a Cowboy...ever.
