Mayo (1 Viewer)

Mayo has been 2nd on NE in tackles, with Harrison 1st. Now with Harrison out, should Mayo's tackles go up, down, or stay the same?

For the Patriots' defense's sake, I sure hope that a S wasn't taking tackles from a ILB.
In some sense, Harrison was impacting the ILB tackle opportunity. He was very frequently playing in the box on running downs and nickel snaps, limiting pursuit opportunities and potentially some zone coverage snaps. Harrison was in and out of Monday night's game before the quad injury and Mayo was showing a fair amount of ranginess during that time.I don't think it's a big impact, but the loss of a very good player in the middle of the field will likely give the other leading tacklers more frequent and more favorable tackle chances.Mayo can't get much higher in my estimation anyway, but Harrison's loss certainly won't hurt his chances at cracking the 90 solo barrier I'd hoped for him this preseason. He's already on pace for 98. With the Patriot offense so much worse than was expected, it wouldn't be shocking to see him hit 100.

Thanks Jene!

I think Mayo is flying a bit under the radar because of his lack of big plays. If he could add some big plays to his already high tackle totals, he would be a major stud.

Mayo's tackles have nothing to do with Rodney Harrison. Harrison is the clean-up guy in the secondary. Mayo's tackles will be the same, no higher, no less. The only person(s) to see an increase in time is either Merriweather or Sanders.. which ever gets the nod as the starting SS

well, they'll both be starting, although I can't say for sure which roles they'll have.

if it helps anybody out, harrison and meriweather each had about 40/60 snaps in that denver game, while j sanders saw all 60 starting at fs.

while meriweather is technically harrison's back up, I don't see any reason they couldn't swap spots.

Well said Jene, as this will probably be the outcome. The only downside to losing Harrison is if they ask Mayo to drop back into coverages more. That will definitely hurt him in the tackle department. Although I don't believe this is the case, I think it is something to keep an eye on.

ok, I know this is the mayo thread, but if anyone's interested I believe it's sanders (j) taking harrison's spot, and the rangier meriweather moving to fs.
