MB III - Going Forward (1 Viewer)

NoCheese

turn or burn
A couple of clunker games and it seems as if the carries are not even 50/50 and Barber is not THE goal line back. So what do you expect from here on out?

Love MBIII but I dumped him for a nice package after last game - the rotation system is MUCH worse than I thought without him getting all the GL carries. He'll have a few big games down the stretch but also have a lot of games like the last 2. Shame cause if he was the sole RB he would be top 5 easy!

I was all over this guy at the beginning of the season but this split is killing me. I would just assume move him for Bush or another player of that ability.

I guess a 3rd concussion from JJ or a lot of blowouts are the only way he'll see the field more. Would you agree?

He is 5th in RB scoring in my league, PPR, so the way it's going is fine with me. He isn't going to break down since he is such a hard runner.

He hasnt been the goalline back all season. They alternate by drive, not by field position.

Does anyone understand the methodology in how Julius Jones and Marion Barber are being used on offense? Conclusions I drew from watching the game last night:

- They did not rotate within a series (The guy who started a series stayed in the whole series)

- They do not necessarily alternate series (Sometimes it is JJ for back to back series. Other times MB3)

- MB3 was the recipient of pass receptions late in the 4th quarter (4th quarter back, clincher back, passing downs back???)

It just seems like a coin flip by the coaching staff on which is going to play RB for any given series.

I think the general concensus is that MB3 seems to be the better overall back. However, I just do not understand the methodology or rationale used by Dallas in who plays, when, and how much?

Anyone else have any observations?

I believe they alternated every other series with the exception of at the end when Barber got back-to-back series on the TD drive and then after they recovered the onside kick. But the rotation has been the pattern and the norm so far. To the best of my knowledge, they have never removed Barber at any point when he's on the field for a series. They will remove Jones, though, on some third-down situations but not all.

Basically, it's one guy for one series and the other guy for the other series. That's the way it's been all season so far.

JJ's performance when the Cowboys were backed up on their own 2 was very disappointing. I was surprised they didn't have Barber in for that series.

I posted on this last week in a different thread. I'll take the chance to update here:Total Cowboy offensive possessions this year: 57Possessions on which neither Jones nor Barber touched the ball: 5Possessions on which Jones touched the ball, Barber did not: 26Possessions on which Barber touched the ball, Jones did not: 20Possessions on which Jones and Barber both touched the ball: 6Possessions on which Jones was given a touch inside the opponents' 10: 2 (one in week 3, one in week 4)Possessions on which Jones carried early in the possession, Barber finished inside the opponents' 10: 2 (both in week 2)I think the question of whether or not Barber is the goal line back is still open, based on the evidence. Last night didn't settle anything, as the Cowboys only ran one play inside the Bills' 10, and it was a series on which Barber was carrying anyway.

Neither guy ran the ball well last night. The Bills really shut down Dallas' running game. Barber's best work came as a receiver.

It'd be interesting to see the number of drives each RB has had which ended up with points for the Cowboys.

Edited to add - Jones wasn't helped last night because he was on the field at least three times when Romo turned the ball over. Once resulted in the first defensive TD; the second came near midfield when Jones was standing in front of Romo wide open and Romo wouldn't throw him the ball, instead putting it down and fumbling and the last one was in the Red Zone which almost certainly would have resulted in points of some kind.
