Michael Turner an Atlanta Falcon (1 Viewer)

Yikes. Just seems like WAY too much for a guy with only 228 CAREER carries over the last 4 yrs. I know many are high on him, but I just don't see it, or at least have seen enough of it. Time will tell.

Curious as to who Atlanta thought they were bidding against for Turner....thats way too much guaranteed money (if true, agents have a loose definition of "guaranteed")

as a Falcon fan with a salary cap consciousness, I was against signing him. I have been wrong before, but last time I checked all rb's needed blocking in front first....

I don't like the signing for the Falcons. You could argue that, save for receiver, running back was the least of their problems on offense. Money not well spent, IMO.

Does this signing mean they are going QB in the draft now? Can't see them grabbing McFadden after shelling out this money for Turner.

There is reason for optomism. The Browns were in a similar situation last year when they signed Lewis, and he seemed to do OK. Now the Falcons just need to get Long at the 3 pick and sign a top guard to pair up with him. :lmao:

Turner has received a lot of hype, and justifiably so. He's a terrific runner, maybe one of the best five in the league. He's got a career YPC average of 5.5, which is almost the average of Adrian Peterson, on almost the same number of carries. People dismiss high YPC numbers for backup RBs, which is sometimes fair but more often than not isn't fair. Backup RBs usually average lower YPC numbers than starting RBs, and RBs with a low number of carries average fewer yards per carry than RBs with a high number of carries.

Turner's a big body, so he's a terrific complement to Norwood for the Falcons. They could form the best 1-2 tandem in the league, IMO, as Norwood's arguably the best change of pace runner in the league. He's got an incredible 1246 yards on just 202 career carries. This could be a modern day Csonka and Morris.

I don't think this was the best place for Turner to land from a fantasy perspective, though. Norwood's just too good. He's going to get his 100 carries this year, and maybe even more. He might not be an everydown RB, but there's no reason not to give Norwood 6-7 carries a game. Turner will have a difficult time getting over 275 carries, IMO, on a team that won't be in a position to run the ball a lot.

Norwood won't steal TDs, so this isn't a huge hit for Turner's value. And it's possible that this will extend Turner's career, and keep him healthy. But it probably will prevent him from being a stud RB1 for fantasy purposes.

This is good for Turner owners IMO.
How?Atlanta may be the worst place Turner could have gone. -Terrible O-line-No Qb-Below Average WRs-No TEA bad offense that will have a tough time moving the chains and a defense that won't keep them in games.Add all that with the issue that Norwood has a good chance of being the RB on passing downs and it may have been the worst place for Turner to land, other than San Diego of course. For all the Turner owners who were holding onto him for the last few years for Turner to get a starting RB opportunity, it has to be discouraging.

Im not discouraged at all, for alot of us Turner is our 3rd or 4th best RB, If he went to the Texans I would have been MUCH happier, other then that I just wanted him out for SD. He did get a big contract so hes not going to be rotting on the bench, he will get goalline, and we arent really suprised...there just wasnt an intense interest in him this year. I have to believe there was some talk between him and Blank concerning carries as well..

I will say it again...Norwood can not pass protect.... Turner will be in on 3rd dwns; passing dwns. Norwood will be COP and will recieve is 5 - 10 carriers.

For how much hype this signing will bring, Norwood will end up being the value play here, especially in ppr leagues.

drafted him in the mid 5th last yr in a 14 team PPR... no complaints here. he will be RBBC for between him and DMac.

The problem is Atlanta RBs had just 354 carries last year. Now with Turner, they should be a better rushing team, which means more carries in general. But with a bad passing game and a bad defense, I don't see a ton of carries for them again.

I assume you mean 5-10 carries/game. If so, that is still a significant #. 5-10 carries, using the middle # of 7.5/game works out to 120 carries over the season. That means Turner is gonna have a really hard time breaking 275 carries in a season. Without hitting 275-300, it's really hard to be a legit fantasy #1.

Norwood's gamelogs show evidence otherwise. Norwood seems to be on the field alot on passing situations (i.e. 2nd or 3rd and long)

I'm not a big fan of Atlanta's offense. Until they get solid QB play, it's going to be a bit of a mess. However, I'm excited about Turner's prospects in Atlanta. I know that Norwood's owners have to be bashing their heads against the wall because the kid seems to have a world of talent, but was just never given his break. I think that with Norwood coming in as COP and on situational downs, this can only help Turner in his first year as a primary ball carrier.

What are everyone's thoughts on his value in Atlanta? I've seen his average Dynasty ranking around RB20. Does this change?

Also, what do you feel he can put up in Year 1 in that offense? How much will Norwood steal?

I predict -

260 attempts for 1196 yards (4.6 avg.) - 8 TDs

30 catches for 240 yards (8.0 avg.) - 1 TD

Thoughts?

Good signing. He should start right away and get 250-330 carries if he can stay healthy. Norwood = :clyde:

I now see a lot more similarities between the opportunity that Lamont Jordan got with the Raiders and the one that Turner will get with the Falcons. Other than Turner having greater top speed, they're physically fairly close (both good between the tackles but little wiggle). Atlanta's situation looks at least as bad as the Raiders. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

If there's one error I made in the last year (and I made a lot more than that), I did not account for situation as much as I should have. I'll be factoring that into my rankings a bit more this year. The Falcons offense looks like it could be very bad.

Good...but not great. He's guaranteed to play behind a subpar QB for at least one year.
An under the radar move that should help Turner a bit:John Clayton reports that the Atlanta Falcons have replaced tight end Alge Crumpler by agreeing to terms with free agent Ben Hartsock.Hartsock, who was drafted in the third round in 2004 by Indianapolis, is best known for his blocking ability. He has just 24 catches for 247 yards in 45 career games, including 12 catches for 138 yards with Tennessee last season.Hartsock's deal is for four years and $9 million.

How?Atlanta may be the worst place Turner could have gone. -Terrible O-line
This will be addressed. Sure as #### didn't help last year that 5 starting tackles got injured.Norwood still managed to lead the league in YPC.
Just re-signed Redman, who had a better passer rating in '07 than Brees, Palmer, Rivers, Schaub,, Pennington, Anderson and the superbowl MVP.
-Below Average WRs
Young receivers. One of whom put up 1200 yards last year, the other projected starter is coming off his rookie year.
Just signed one of the best blocking TEs in the league yesterday. Also have one of the best blocking FBs in Mughelli. Expect Turner to get 20 carries a game, including goalline.

Norwood is an afterthought. He couldn't keep Warrick freaking Dunn from racking up 270 touches (IIRC), isn't a goal line threat, and obviously isn't considered a serious RB or the Falcons wouldn't have been in the market looking to give someone new ridiculous cash.

Now... if the Falcons run the ball 375 times then 100 touches for Norwood would be a problem. But they won't. With a new coach and a new bellcow RB they'll revert back to something closer to the league average of ~450 and Turner will get the lion's share of the extra 75. He's a lock for 325-350 touches and the goal line carries IMO.

very :clyde: too much negativity on this signing for Turner owners !!!

New regime or not, you can't run the ball 450 times a year when you're constantly down.

Just traded Turner and Norwood along with Mark Clayton in a dynasty for Steve Smith, Berrian and Keith...Im quite happy with the end result...

I think his value lies in the #18-#22 range.

Most dynasty owners will most likely value McGahee, R Brown and Grant higher than Turner. The "head scratching" will start when guys like Maroney, Jam Lewis and DeAngelo Williams are thrown into the mix. A debate of Turner vs White could even be made.

Turner received "starter" money, but he also landed in a bad situation with a pretty dang good backup (Norwood). All of the guys listed above do not have a Norwood-like talent on the same team.

wow. being a backup is the way to go. it's funny, if turner had been a starter the past few year, he would've had way too much mileage to get that kind of contract. (unless, of course, it's the seattle seahawks)

So the guy that led all RBs in YPC in both seasons of his career is an afterthought? What coaching staff wouldn't want to give Norwood and his six yards per carry 5-10 carries a game.

So, do you feel that Norwood will play the same role he did last year? I have a hard time believing that his role could increase that much (~100 carries). Why else would they have given Turner so much money? I do feel that he will spell Turner, as they need to keep Turner fresh, after having not been the #1 since college. It will be interesting to see what the new regime does here.

What else should they do with the money? They needed a strong RB to go with Norwood, and Turner was perfect for that. This offense would be best with Turner getting 70% of the carries among the two.

I do not think Norwood's role will increase much, but he'll play enough to keep Turner's FF value tempered. Turner will be the undisputed starter on Day 1 of camp. His play will dictate whether Norwood rushes 50 or 150 times.

I'm not saying he won't get 6-8 touches per game. Just that Turner will still get ~19-20. So maybe 350 is too many, but 300-325 isn't. And I agree with you that Turner is legit - he'll make good use of those touches.Norwood's a great change of pace back, but that's it. All IMO of course. Time will tell.

Flying under the radar was the signing of Ben Hartstock. The guy is a blocker first, and receiver second. This further illustrates the Falcons soon-to-be style of running the ball.

yeah... when Dunn was the other RB

RBs with over 200 career points of VBD, that started six or fewer games through the first two seasons of their career. Not many, but a few studs on that list with several top 3 finishes in a season.

Code:
GS	VBD	Name0	547	Ahman Green0	404	Wendell Tyler2	387	James Brooks3	365	Larry Johnson1	331	Chris Warren0	322	Jamal Anderson6	319	Stephen Davis0	303	Gerald Riggs0	272	Joe Morris2	265	Mike Pruitt6	230	Dalton Hilliard5	229	Rudi Johnson0	218	Greg Pruitt2	212	Robert Smith
Ahman Green's a nice comparison, because he had to leave Seattle since he was behind a stud RB in Ricky Watters. And Turner has showed us a lot more than Green did at his first stop.

I think Norwood would get 100 carries on any team in the league.

Jerious Norwood RB $275,000 $155,000 $0 $430,000 2009 UFA

Falcons 2006 Salary Cap
I think Norwood is signed thru '09. He becomes a free agent in '10.7/26/2006: Signed a four-year, $1.985 million contract.

The deal includes $365,000 in guarantees.

2008: $445,000

2009: $530,000

2010: Free Agent
If that is correct, thanks for the info. As you can see, I pulled that info from the link I posted. Maybe they trade Norwood to Denver

:thumbup:As a Turner owner, Chicago or Houston was where I was hoping he might land. However, Atlanta isn't that bad...and with all the chaos and injuries they had to deal with during the 2007 season, basing one's opinions on stats/performance from 2007 as a predictor for 2008 is about as dangerous as failing to discount for a player having really bad tools/weapons around him. Atlanta isn't the ideal situation (related to fantasy), but it could have been one HECK of a lot worse. He could have been stuck behind LT for the indefinite future too. ;)As a Vikings fan though, not seeing Turner in a Bears uniform and having Lovie Smith re-commit to Cedric Benson has me doing a little  too.....
