Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (6 Viewers)

Alright, let's rip off this band-aid I've been avoiding a little bit. Going with an artist I'd guess has a high probability to be on @Yambag's playlist - Metallica it is for this week's deep dive.
No one will blame you if you skip St. Anger.
That said, it's an artist that's solidly on my "eventually maybe" list for a M-AD 31.
I am just as afraid of revisiting Death Magnetic.

But as a wise man once put to song - what don't kill ya make ya more strong!
Death Magnetic had a couple good tracks from what I remember. The newest album was a pleasant surprise.
If I did a Metallica MAD31 not sure anything after Reload would make the cut.
I was deciding between a few of the big names: Megadeth, Slayer, etc.. But I didn't know (or remember) that they had one within in the last couple years, so I decided to go with this adventure.

Unofficially {tm}, I'd bet I'd have a few from Garage, Inc, and not necessarily the most famous ones.
But yeah, the idea the that first 4 albums would be around half of it while Death Magnetic/Hardwired/72 Seasons might get 5 songs combined (and St. Anger 0) is part of why I've been spinning my wheels on it.

I get it, because these are the thoughts I have as well. It's not mandatory that all of an artist's albums are covered. Hell, I'm not sure I even had 1/2 of Journey's output in my playlist. I have strong thoughts and opinions about Metallica and Lars, but I still could put together 31 from the debut --> s/t, especially if I included Garage Inc.

If you want to hold long notes on your home saxophone, here's how.

Excerpt:
  • Fill your mouth with water, really full so your cheeks are distended
  • While holding the water, breathe in and out normally a few times through your nose – keep a steady rhythm.
  • Now, without stopping the nose breathing, purse your lips and try to squirt the water out in a long thin stream. Think of at is if you are blowing a raspberry

The national anthem before the Eagles-Packers game is being played on saxophone. Krista is having a conniption.
I hate to say it because I love Cheap Trick, but I thought sax guy better than Robin Zander.

I really wanted him to be great. He did OK for an old dude singing a difficult song.
There are almost as many Cheap Trick song title puns as there are posts about football in the game thread.

Lot of people trying to stop this game.

Anyway, before I mentioned an idea that I still want to do, but it's become beyond obvious that there's no way it'll happen before the deadline. So then, presented to you with all the dedication of a few days of preparation and random searching, and the spirit of others definitely having fun with these themes:
#, Please - 31 Songs with numbers in the title.
With a note that letters aren't numbers, so they need to have "1", not "one", for example. I have a top 36 that all start with a number that look pretty strong, but I'm not 100% sure I'll go with that restriction. Will be posted with the highest number at #31 so I can countdown.
Does Jenny know about this?

Metallica has been on my short list for future rounds, but I think I’d only have songs from their first five albums since I never really listened to anything after that.

This one could take a while.
Boston is a short deep dive.
I’m at a conference this week so won’t be diving deep with another until I get back. Considering Chicago, Alabama, or the Alabama shakes (a candidate for a future artist countdown).

 I’m just saying I’d need like 3 weeks to a month.

My theme- songs to play during / after a funeral

As the last few weeks have gone by, my chosen theme has evolved. I ear marked time to write this now last week and it only seems fitting that I am writing this on the heels of learning of a co-worker / friend's unexpected death this weekend. She spent parts of 2024 battling cancer, but packed up for xmas break feeling great and ready to attack 2025...only to never return to the office again. She called in sick Mon, saw her doc Tues, went to the hospital Wed, transferred to ICU Thu, friends / family called to her side Fri, and dead before the sun rose Sat. I share that because at first, this theme was for my funeral, but has since morphed into something much different- long before this weekend's news. Some of this will be personal, but others will be more narrative, and some bigger than both.

My dad's struggled with health the last few years (early stages dementia), rapidly started deteriorating this past summer, then fell off a cliff a month ago. At this point it does not appear things will get better, so candidly I hope his time still on earth is short. He shared something similar with my brother once things started unraveling last year - (paraphrasing) I don't want to die, but I also don't want to live like this. Parallel to this has been my mother's coping...or lack there of. I'm not comfortable getting into the weeds, but his fading health has exposed some of her glaring personal weaknesses, bluntly she's handled his health very poorly. I share that not to say I expect anyone to handle this well, just that her shortcomings are negatively impacting many relationships of those close to the family.

That's not the root of my motivation for this theme though. It's the backdrop. These events have just really pulled together the last few years of my life. Up through the end of covid, I had a mostly easy life, my wife too. The hurdles that we needed to clear were primarily self-inflicted. That said, without them, we aren't who we are today. I was direction-less well into my 20's, she wasn't much clearer, but our paths slowly started to come together about that time. As those roads started to take shape, we were developing into a good place. Laying the ground work for professional growth, but prioritizing our health, developing our small humans, and maintaining / building relationships with others. We were busy, but our plates weren't too full.

That all changed starting summer 2021. I'd break the character limit and then some unpacking it all. I'll just say surge capacity is both real and finite. We did what we needed to do at the time, but when we ran out of gas we kept going anyway. We knew it was the wrong long-term decision making process, but once our heads were in a blender we couldn't get ourselves out. The 3 years that followed were a blur and as we emerged into summer 2024 we decided it was time to start making some difficult decisions we'd been avoiding for far too long. We weren't the same people that we were before. Don't get me wrong, a lot of great things have happened to us during this time, we've just been pulled in too many directions for us to handle. The common trap many middle aged parents find themselves in, when you try to do too much you end up cutting corners with everything and performing poorly. It's not been an instant fix, but slow and steady we are making progress to return to the sorta people we strived to be 3 years ago. We just lost our ways, didn't establish priorities, set boundaries, tried to do too much, etc.

The word I used in messaging with Krista was 'introspective.' That is the approach I've taken to this right-sizing lifestyle over the last several months and it's how I ended up with this theme. I'm not thinking about the end, but rather what I can do between now and that time to maximize what I get out of this life and put into it for others. Appreciating that my best path isn't necessarily the same as others and I think that will be demonstrated on this journey. There will be sad moments, there will be happy ones, others that make you laugh, maybe some that make you cringe, but ultimately as long as I make a connection I'll deem this experiment successful. Hope y'all enjoy the ride....

Last Five Out

36.

Who? – Jeff Tweedy/Nels Cline

What? – Wilco

Where? – Irving Plaza, Town Hall, Beacon Theatre, Sinatra Park, Coney Island Cyclones Ballpark, The Tower

When? – about 6-7 times between 1995-2018

Why? – Tweedy improved a lot as a player and developed a unique style after taking lessons from Tom Verlaine. Cline added some eccentricity and experimentation into the band.

35.

Who? – Chris Haskett

What? – Rollins Band

Where? – Irving Plaza, The Limelight, Roseland Ballroom (x2)

When? – 1991-1993

Why? – So much energy in his stage presence and playing style. One of the most intense live bands I’ve seen. Hank Rollins Band opening for The Beasties Boys two nights in a row at the Roseland Ballroom was one of my concert highlights.

34.

Who? – Rich Robinson

What? – The Black Crowes

Where? – Roseland Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Garden State Arts Center, Headliners of H.O.R.D.E. Festival, Sea Hear Now Festival

When? – 7-8 times between 1995-2024

Why? – Rich went from a very good straight forward rocker on guitar in the vein of Keith Richards to a jam band virtuoso – I don’t think I’ve seen a band grow so much over time.

33.

Who? – Robert Cray

What? – The Robert Cray Band

Where? – Garden State Arts Center, Madison Square Garden

When? – 1994 and 2011(?)

Why? – “Modern” blues player that plays like an O.G. – I saw him the second time as an opener for Clapton (who also had Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramwell III playing guitar onstage with him) and when Cray joined Clapton’s band on stage for a few songs, he rose to the occasion and fit right in.

32.

Who? – Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing

What? – Judas Priest

Where? – Nassau Coliseum

When? – 1982

Why? – old school metal? Yes, please. Priest, with Dokken as the opener, was my second concert and I was 14 years old, so I can’t claim to remember too much but I do remember it was a great time. On a side note, after the show while leaving the arena, this big metal head started bullying some Chinese kid calling him “egg roll” and pushing him around. The kid did a jumping spin kick that bloodied the bullies face. It was awesome.

I've never done a last 5 out and I'm not going to start now. It's not because there aren't more than 31 good songs regarding rain (spoiler: there are). It's more that there are a couple of artists that have more than 1 rain related song and if I list one as a last 5 out, it'll spoil the one that stayed in.

So I'll just post a last 1 out.
Here's Nick Heyward (an artist likely more well know as a member of Haircut 100) with

That's ok. When i post my 5 tonight it will be my what, last 8-13 out? I'll just pretend you gave some to me. ,)

You've Got Another Thing Coming checked in at #10 in my Judas Priest countdown.

Got my list sorted and will be sending it in tonight. It will feature several artists and songs that have appeared in our MAD31 countdowns.
I only chose songs that specifically mention The Beatles or their songs in the lyrics.

31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system - FAQ

[snipped]

What kind of songs are you listing?

Mostly stuff you already know (so if you don't have a decent setup, no worries - it's still 31 good songs).

I'm posting songs that just hit nice on my setup. For some songs, it's the vocal performance. For others, it's that "band" mix. Or for some, just how the song hits (note: JBL's are well know for being good "rock" speakers. I find this to be true).

Some of these songs are on "audiophile songs" lists, because they deserve to be there. Others are just things I think sound good on my setup. In my writeups, I'll try to highlight what attracted me to it. There are literally thousands of songs that could be listed, so I'm sure what I think is a great vocal will be surpassed by what you think is a great vocal. That's the beauty of it.

Once I was talking to this guy at an audio gear show, and he said "good audio gear is the best present you can buy yourself". I agree - I get more pleasure out of my music setup than anything else I own.

I'm about half done with my list - it's definitely been fun so far.
Really looking forward to this one. I have my own "demo" playlist and could always use some new great sounding songs to put stuff through the paces. Lucky for me, my wife actually enjoys the audiophile thing too and usually goes with me to test out gear. But instead of audio-nerd terms, she tends to describe equipment by the kind of alcohol it evokes. Like, "these B&W 803s look amazing but their sound reminds me of tequila - great in small doses but too much and your head will hate you."

The downside of her being a music nut too is that we have 3 two-channel systems - one in a listening room, one in the basement, and a small one (using an Arcam A5, the little brother of your A25) in the office.

I promise no more after these. This is the list I sent to krista as my Official last 5 out. After my recent music deep dive, I had to cut a couple more songs.

The Sword was the most metal of my picks. In the end I didn't think it fit in the spirit of the playlist. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion pick was a tough cut, but I cut it because they were one I haven't to most of their output. I had this album and Now I Got Worry and just listened to those. Aesop Rock is artist I have fallen for, and have been working on a playlist for. Love the background music and atmosphere and the lyrics, but I fully acknowledge the voice. I've introduced him to people at work, and that is the common complaint. I still had 4 quality artists for the genre, and wasn't sure if any non-rap fans in threads would dig it. Excuse 17 is Carrie Brownstein's first band. That was an autobiography I read recently and loved, which steered me to give this a listen. I seemed to like this more than the first Sleater-Kinney albums, so I thought it was worth a listen here since S-K was on Shuke's list, but this wasn't. Culpepper's Orchard was my favorite listen on my music deep dive the other night. This album was a fantastic surprise. In the end it was too knew to me, and I haven't gotten to the other couple albums yet. I have other 70s prog that I have done a deep dive on high on the official 31, so this got the cut.

@krista4 - do we have deadlines yet?

Ooh, very nice. Yea, I have three myself lol - funny how that happens when you get into this stuff. My main system is in my office/mancave, then there's a vintage marantz setup in the living room, and a system in the garage.

OZ – top 31 song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe [list in chronological order
One positive of doing this list is the ease of searching for the songs. Another is there’s a decent variety between the movies and shows from multiple platforms. With 34 movies and 28 shows there’s more to choose from than one might think. A few of the movies crushed their soundtracks, others didn’t provide much to choose from, although a few instrumentals were almost included.
Almost everyone will know almost every song included, but maybe a few will be songs barely recognized.

Looking forward to everyone’s lists!

I’m trying to keep my list as far from a punch in the nose as possible. I think that’s what I’d like to be graded on (not that there are any grades here—but if there were). Trying to come out of left and right-center field but keeping it as good as I possibly can.

Problem is that what is on the nose for some might not be others, etc., and those songs omitted might have some wondering “where’d it go?” If you are wondering “where’d it go?” chances are it was too much of a punch in the nose. Yes, there are a few jabs here and there (and number two is a haymaker that became more lethal with time), but enough. As few nose punches as possible.

Any kidney shots or ear bites?

I feel like KP tee’d that one up for me.

Relax. Breathe. Eye on the ball. How the best do/pendulum swinging like Ceausescu

I’m not sure about this “on the nose” thing. Some songs that mention genres were such deserved hits or legendary songs that they’re commonly known for a reason. What to do? My first five out right now look like a greatest hits of all-time list.

I don’t know how to grade on boxing technique, so you’re fine.
