Aesop Rock · The Impossible Kid · Song · 2016 favicon32.b64ecc03.png open.spotify.com

Awww yeah. I love this track. It’s a banger with a little bit of storytelling to it.

eta* I glitched the system a bit here, didn’t I? Would love to figure out how to put a picture in there.

I knew at least rock would dig the Aesop Rock!

I got through St.Anger. That was rough. Not sure what would be higher on eephus' worst drum noises list. What it did bring to light is just how much Lars wails on the snare in the same way. It gave me a more educated reason why i think he isn't that great of a drummer, or at least not what is in my favorite metal.

Now clear with K-Rose, and also clear with Bounce FM (funk/disco/soul/R&B) - two stations left to go and 94 tracks highlighted as to be included in my 100, with the remaining ones to do being Master Sounds (classic funk/soul, rare groove) and CSR 103.9 (contemporary soul/R&B, new jack swing), I think I'm tracking nicely in terms of getting the right number of things from everything. 99% certain I know which tracks I'll include from those two in the main list and I think I've got a clear other two to get me up to 98, just need to hope that there's not a bunch of really great stuff when I listen to them. We will get something that was in the top 50 of the tour of the world list!

Three more lists received today! Up to 17...
I'm really looking forward to this.
I've got an unbelievably good theme locked and loaded if we have a round 2. It might be better than what I've put together for rain.
I have one as well, if I can find enough songs that I like for it.
I started putting a list together ~15 minutes ago and I have 32 songs and I'd have a tough time cutting one of them out.

Anybody want 2 from me this round? Or should I wait and hope we do another theme round? (Seems like folks are more into the artist rounds.)

We will likely do another theme at some point. It makes a nice change from the artist stuff. And I don't have to listen to 42 albums.

I have a question. Just to reiterate, my theme is songs with a genre or associated sub-genre in the title of the song. The songs are not always in that particular genre (it’s tricky), but the musical genre or sub-genre is right there in the title (it’s tricky because some genres took other genre’s names and used them in different ways within their own genre). Anyway, enough of that. Do you guys want the “hits” version, or the underground version of what I’m doing? I’m just curious.

I ask because I took a ride in the car tonight and listened to what I had done with the underground version of the theme. It was definitely a bit jarring and not as professional or overground sounding as the “hits” version. It has all the drawbacks of maybe being a little less executed professionally and perhaps the songs are just not as good, but there’s an indefatigable spirit to it, I guess? I’m just wondering what everybody wants to hear, if they have a preference, or if they don’t really care.

I’m sort of shrugging my shoulders at this point and I’m confused. It would seem like the category is limited and that thirty-one genre songs would be tough to throw together—but trust me, it isn’t. There are a lot of songs with the “rock,” “blues,” “rock n’ roll,” “funk,” “punk,” and others in the title. Like, a bunch. Help a brother out and narrow it down for me, won’t you? Hits/overground or no hits/underground?

I had a similar thought with mine. There are soooo many songs I could include on a "sounds great on a 2-channel system" list, I could easily find 31 that nobody has ever heard of.

But I thought about the purpose of my list - generally, my list is you saying to a friend "hey check out my new speakers". And at that point, it's usually better to play something the person has at least heard - it causes them to take a little more notice. "I never heard it like that before!". So I generally went with the more familiar for most of my selections.

For yours, I agree with weasel - mix is probably best.

Thank you. That helped out with my thinking. I think getting me to think about what is the purpose of this list is huge. What was it? Well, it was to come up with a theme that was about self-referential music or at least music that was about the music or culture within the title of the song (or, in specific cases, the adaptation of a genre to another genre).

That helped. It’ll help me narrow down some songs that have a genre in the title but aren’t really cutting it for some reason. For example, and just as a way of cementing the thank you, one of my favorite songs over the years has been “Folksong Crisis” by a band called Seafood. But the song is not folk, nor about folk, nor even traipsing about in any waters that might be folk. It just has “folksong” in the title. It’s clearly a guitar-driven indie track with a beautiful bassoon breakdown. But nothing really folkish in the least. Given that one of the purposes of the list was self-reference, I think that’ll be removed from consideration.

So you cleared up a bit of what I’m going through here. To give another example, I’m also having trouble cutting rap songs that use the word “rock” in the title. Some have rock samples, others don’t. I’m not sure where the line is on that because to “rock” something in rap or hip hop has taken on a meaning all its own. So it’s a personal decision, to be sure, but it’s vexing me a bit right now. It’s never fun to set hard and fast rules that disqualify songs that you like when the rule itself shouldn’t be so hard and fast lest you be left with nothing at the end or you’re missing a genre within a genre.

OK, so to avoid getting snipped, I'm planting my flag for Theme round 2 with "Public Ways" (i.e., streets, roads, avenues, etc.).

Our playlists may share a song.

I think I eliminated every rap or hip-hop song that uses “rock” in the title. To do that, I had to get rid of a favorite or two, but in the end I couldn’t help it and it had to be done. There will be clear lines, darn it!

I even eliminated my number one because the “blues” in the title is really a funk/soul hybrid. That one hurt, but I want to stay true to the mission. There are no longer any songs that aren’t at least colorable or that don’t have the thumb on the scale for that particular genre.

I'm probably going to take every last day allowed to get my list ready. I'm hoping to get more obscure songs in my playlist, but not sure if time will allow.

Submitted my list yesterday. 31 songs by 31 Canadian artists.

A couple of things were apparent as I did this:

1) I had to leave off a ton of artists/songs (obviously). Was difficult to decide what I wanted to present. I tried to stay away from "big" artists that you all know but I know I have a few in there that are not going to be new to you.
2) I don't listen to much new music, so my list is almost exclusively 70s-90s. Sorry in advance.
3) Some of the songs are not what I like the most from an artist but what I feel is closest to show their general sound. If that makes any sense.

Ive got a mix of rock, blues, folk, roots rock
Hopefully a song or 2 that y'all enjoy - and maybe find a new artist that tickles your fancy.

The RIP thread is busy enough today, unfortunately. I thought I’d post here that Ghanaian musician Teddy Osei also passed away. He is best known as the leader of the band, Osibisa. It was founded by him and a few other Ghana expats who were living in London. The band has a significant share of responsibility for bringing African music to the west.

Did Osibisa make my Afrobeat 31? 🤔

Another artist with album cover art by Roger Dean

I now have an ordered list. Should hopefully submit the 31 tomorrow, the remaining 69 of the 100 should ideally follow but the next couple of days are hella busy. Anyone wanting a long list where America and Quiet Riot are the bread in a Mozart sandwich? You'll get it!

31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system

About the songs

List is in and last 5 out will be coming soon. But I want to talk about the songs a bit.

These are 31 songs that I think sound great on my system. I have a speakers playlist that I'm constantly adding to - if something catches my ear or I just like the way it sounds, on it goes. I spend a solid amount of time just listening to music - that, and fussing over the gear, has become a big hobby of mine.

Most are songs / artists you know. Some of the songs were hits, and most got some radio airplay. So there's not much in the way of specialized electronic music or countless other things that might sound great and are a good system test, but do nothing for my mood. One of the joys of "listening" in an audiophile sense is hearing new stuff in old songs or realizing how all the different pieces come together to make the song because you can really hear all the instruments and vocalists. Even a schmalzy pop hit might have something interesting or just sound great. The Starland Vocal Band's Afternoon Delight is fun to listen to on good speakers. This can also be a bit jarring at first with some songs - hearing Superstition with the second keyboard part over on the left being way more pronounced gives it a whole new sound to me.

There are literally thousands of songs that could make this list. I'm sure I missed your favorite vocal performance, a better drum sound than something I'm going to highlight, etc. While I tried to get a mix of genres / styles / time periods, I confess most of this list is 60's-90's rock and pop. I'm also omitting some stuff we've done recently that was fresh in my mind. The Bee Gees, Annie Lennox, Chicago (amongst others)... they all could have placed a song here but didn't. CSN, the Doors, and ELO could have too but I did them already. There is some live stuff here too - I like well-recorded live music a lot, and on good speakers it can really give a sense of "the band" playing together. You can literally hear the practice and work they put in. I don't listen to a lot of classical music but I imagine it's similar. Maybe I should start.

When I do the writeups on each (hopefully I'll keep up - I've been better at that the last few), I'll definitely highlight why it's on the list, at least to my ears. The purpose of this list is essentially saying to a friend, "Hey, check out my new speakers - listen to this..."

Not much to report on the MADs adjacent new release front

There's a 30th anniversary edition of Frank Black's Teenager of the Year but it appears to be just a new remaster w/out newly unearthed tracks. But it's enough to get him out touring again w/out the Pixies.

New albums from Logic, Mac Miller and David Gray. Rufus Wainwright put out something called the Dream Requiem featuring the French Radio Philharmonic and Meryl Streep

My most anticipated album of the week comes from The Weather Station. The pre-release singles have a very Joni Mitchellish sound. Kele from Bloc Party also has a electronica album out that I'll listen to later.

The Metallica deep dive was more fun than I was expecting. I have been underestimating (and even avoiding) their late era catalogue but that is based on St. Anger and one song from Death Magnetic. The rest I was surprised how much I liked, especially the newest album. That might be their best since the 80s. I had no trouble finding 3 or 4 songs from all the albums to make a nice quick playlist.

I was feeling in the zone for this type of metal and went deep diving to find something new. I found something good enough to prompt another dive into Evile this week. Holy crap, these albums were a great find. Here we have a British metal band who's first album was in '07, but sound like they are firmly stuck in 80s thrash mode. I listened to each of their 6 albums twice this week as well and made a nice little playlist for them. Trying to think who would like this as well - @Yo Mama , @Yambag , @Mt. Man , @Raging weasel , @rockaction I know I am missing others. I hear all the greats in here - especially Master era Metallica which is why I bring them up...
