Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (13 Viewers)

I'll send youtube links to Krista. Whomever is compiling the Spotify playlists let me know and I'll send to you. There are certain versions of some of my songs.

I did mine with YouTube links embedded with the song name, followed by “(Spotify)” with an embedded link to Spotify version.

ETA: I submitted similar to how I posted my last five out. E.g….

Position Pass Power (Spotify) - Shango Dance Band (Nigeria)

Am I supposed to send both Youtube and Spotify links?

If that's in direct response to me mentioning Youtube, I don't use Spotify, so just did the former. I believe the majority use Spotify. Both would likely be overkill
I only use Spotify for these threads and don’t pay for it. I used Spotify links in my list but will post YouTube videos for most descriptions.

I'll put YouTube links in my posts about each song.

We can postpone a little if it would help the procrastinators, but only if you would actually then get them in.
I might need this. In Vegas since Monday, Finished 4th Monday, and 3rd Friday night in tourneys. Celebrated with my favorite tacos ever Friday night and woke up to food poisoning yesterday morning. I'm just now feeling a little ok. Was going to meet a friend in Sacramento for WSOP circuit today, and cancelled that and am flying back to Boise in the morning and will do my list as fast as possible.

ETA LOL: Jan 25th should be no problem after actually reading OP

Shuke's saxy 31 last 5 out.

Frank Zappa - Cosmik Debris
Zappa is a genius. Sweet sax solo starts at about the 2:00 mark. Now that I'm listening again, this should have been in my top 31 based on the solo.

Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
This is didn't make the list because while the ending sax is a definitive part of this song, it's only there for a short bit.

King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Great experimental stuff here. It didn't make my list because it doesn't have a lot of "relistenability" for me.

LL Cool J - Going Back To Cali
Who says I don't like hip hop? One of my favorite videos ever.

Tim Cappello - I Still Believe
As a Gen X'er, how can I post a sax list without this gem? Until recently, I didn't know people like this song, I thought it was just something they remember from The Lost Boys. But apparently my wife likes it. She's the one that told me I needed to include it in this list.

Feel better. Food poisoning sucks.

Not even close to done. Wondering if I'll be able to turn it in by Saturday. It's rounding into form, though. Still think there might be too many hits and that will be boring for people despite what they say. A bunch will definitely make it, but I'm not sure half/half is the way to go here.

Nice first-world problems to have, huh?

Ok, so list submitted. Last cut actually ended up being easy because it was part of a score for a movie and stytlistically didn't really fit with the other songs. So these are the best albums of 1984 but ofc that's through my own personal preferences. There are going to be a couple biggies that don't make it. It's not even that I don't like them, they just didn't make the cut or totally gel with my listening habits. My list is ordered chronologically based on when the albums were released so if one does a tiny bit of detective work they can figure out which albums are being left out. Also fear not, this won't play out like a top radio hits of 84. There are plenty of familiar hits but I tried to make it interesting as well.

Single (Named) Ladies

Single (Named) Ladies is a list of my favorite songs by female artists who perform under a one word stage name. I'll be using the word mononym a lot because it's definitive and and fun to say. This is a theme I've had in the back of my mind for years; I once considered making it into its own thread but lost interest because it was too niche. I kept the artists list compiled back then and used it as a jumping-off point for this project.

My previous MADs artists have all been rockist dudes so this time I wanted to choose a theme that would spotlight women artists and more R&B and Pop music. It was a fun list to research because the mononym requirement narrowed my options down considerably but still provided a strong field of women with enough chutzpah to demand the world recognize them by one word.

Even though krista said there are no rules, this is a nerdy undertaking and there had to be some regulations to determine eligibility. I've given them (single) names to spotlight some additional qualified women who didn't make the final 36:

The Sia/Mitski/Robyn regulation: I've excluded one-named women who've appeared previously as featured artists in MADs countdowns.

The Amerie regulation: I've also blacklisted songs (but not artists) that I've picked in the the three geographic countdowns.

The Aretha regulation: Artists have to be legitimate mononyms who officially released material under a single name. There are some superstars like Arethas, Dolly and Diana who've earned monomyn status in popular culture but they're ineligible because their recordings were never issued as such.

The SOPHIE/ANONHI regulation: I've considered all artists who identify as female because who am I to judge, especially when there are no rules.

The Syreeta regulation: The artist must have recorded (almost) entirely under a mononym. This one has some wiggle room because my research wasn't that comprehensive. For example, Syreeta also released an early Motown single under her given name Rita Wright.

The M.I.A./H.E.R. regulation: Acronyms are considered mononyms for the purposes of this countdown even if they're pronounced as a series of letters.

The Wynonna regulation: Artists who were previously credited under another name as part of a group such as Wynonna Judd are eligible if their solo catalog is exclusively mononymous.

The Nena regulation: The line between a solo project and a mononymous band is a very fine one so I allowed songs by artists such as Nena, which was technically a band with a singer named Nena. This led to the Goldfrapp correllary which as far as I can tell, only applies to Goldfrapp. Goldfrapp would have qualified except that Alison Goldfrapp went and put out a solo album under her first and last name.

Oh good, I like this much better than what I had just assumed it was when I skimmed the themes: songs like Beth or Amanda

You have one like this where oddly enough someone else has a song by this artist on their list, under her recording name at the time, though it was not her given name.

Who is "Diana"?

<—- checks playlist, sees only one who fits your list, but I’d be surprised if she’s on your list and really surprised if you use the same song.

I'll always love Beth by KISS. I just had to listen to it cause it's been a long time since I've heard it. It brings back memories of the 70s.
6th grade talent show had 4 guys dressed up as Kiss playing Beth. Three guys were using tennis rackets as air guitars, and for the life of me I cannot remember what kind of set up the drummer had. I was the guy telling them Led Zeppelin was better. True story.

Batman list submitted.
Hate it.
I think eephus’ point about ideas rather than songs rings true here.
I will plaster on a fake smile and plough through it none the less.

I Like my D Minor List better and i dont really like that one either

@KarmaPolice the spotify links for a lot of the songs have licensing problems for some of these artists/soundtracks.
Dont spend much time looking for something not included on the spreadsheet.
Youtube links will be included in the songs.

It’s an ok song but I didn’t even mean it as those songs are bad. Just thought it was going to songs with titles that were single female names. Doing it with artists is more interesting to me even if I don’t know why.

Okay. What has a model to do with singing? And who is that?
You can't tell that is Diana Ross?

Here is some mindless trivia: Diana is wearing the late model Gia Carangi's jeans on that album cover.
Nope. Not without big hair and spangles. I had no idea. And I've never heard her referred to as just "Diana". That's the Princess of Wales.

Doesn't matter. She's ineligible anyway.

Flipping through Sirius channels in the car today and Same Old Song And Dance was on. I somehow had either forgotten or never consciously realized there was pretty heavy sax in this. If I would have remembered I would have included it. I wore out that Greatest Hits cassette over the years, primarily while on my paper route.
Oh yeah Aerosmith GH with the cow on it and Big Ones were must haves though Big Ones was a cd era release.

Shoot, got mixed up with Get a Grip. Had that one too. But I remember now GH was red with the band's logo (incredible logo btw). But yeah those were all getting played non stop as a kid but I don't find myself going back too much. I might have over did it when I was 12.

That's like me and Van Halen. I love music. If only I loved it like twelve year-old me loved Van Halen with David Lee Roth.

These days—if it comes on? I might even change it.

In other words, you found out it was the same old song and dance.

Funny, I can totally see how VH and Aerosmith fall in that category. I didn't listen to much VH when I was younger, just the biggest hits on the radio. So I will still listen to them now and enjoy it but I can see how if I had a couple VH tapes as a kid, I would have played them simply to death and eventually lost interest.

@Dr. Octopus got me thinking about the best guitarists I have seen live. Here is my top 10, in loose order of my opinion of their guitar talent:
  1. Stevie Ray Vaughan
  2. Eric Clapton
  3. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
  4. Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
  5. Dave Matthews
  6. Tim Reynolds (Dave Matthews Band)
  7. Pete Townsend (Who)
  8. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones)
  9. Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)
  10. Neal Schon (Journey)
Good memories!
