Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (5 Viewers)

Even after eight rounds I'm still having trouble spotting the themes but I did recognize the Beatles' connection today.

Even after eight rounds and I put together all the lists, I still have to look these up. :bag:
I know 2 spots- I am sandwiched by umlauts and afrobeat and the wife has boy/girl bands and hair metal sandwiching her. Most everything else besides metal confuses me consistently.

There can't be anyone that doesn't immediately get my theme, even on shuffle.

24s notables

Dr. Octopus – The Thrill Is Gone - B.B. King - shukelist song!
-OZ- Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye
Mt. Man – 1999 - Prince
jwb – Cortez the Killer - Gov’t Mule
John Maddens Lunchbox – Lazy Eye (Spotify) - Goo Goo Dolls
landrys hat - Wet Blanket - Metric - New to me
Tau837 – What Love Can Be - Kingdom Come - Greta Van Fleet wishes they were as good as these guys
Zegras11 – Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson
Chaos34 - Spy School Graduation Theme - Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - New to me
krista4 – Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night – The Hold Steady

There are so many fun songs that came out of what's now called Landfill Indie. Great albums? not so many.
I definitely spent to way too many $ on stuff that fit that bill. Fratellis - check. Babyshambles - yep. Dogs Die in Hot Cars - shameful nod. Yet I never learned. It's possible I'm the only yank to buy the second Hard Fi cd. And a t-shirt.
I've actually heard of the bolded! They did me a favor by picking a memorable name.

23s favorites

Yo Mama – Just A Girl - No Doubt - no shame in liking this song.
Don Quixote – Fuel for Love (Spotify) - Wrinkars Experience (Nigeria) - new to me
Mt. Man – 1979 – The Smashing Pumpkins - top 25 shukelist appearance!
Pip’s Invitation – Hard to Laugh – The Pursuit of Happiness - new to me
scorchy – Be The One - The Ting Tings - I could have sworn they were on shukelist but I can't find them. This is fun.
El Floppo – Inca Roads - Frank Zapp, The Mothers of Invention
landrys hat - Slow Rt. Hand - Califone - Roomsound (2001) - new to me
rockaction - Funkytown – Lipps Inc. - shukelist!
Zegras11 – Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears - just seems to get better over the years.
Anonymous Mystery Theme Dictator - Love Is The Drug - Roxy Music

jwb – songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system

Cortez the Killer - Gov’t Mule

When we did the Worldwide Countdown, Neil's content wasn't on Spotify. Cortez was my #1 (as it is my #1 on any list it is appropriate for) and for the playlist I chose the Mule cover, which is beastly.

MAC_32 – Songs to play during (and after) a funeral

Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley / Alison Kraus

I have seen this performed live. My wife is a big Brad Paisley fan and we have seen him in concert three times. I believe he played this every time, with Krauss appearing on video singing her part prerecorded.

DrIanMalcolm – Songs about New York

Le Freak - Chic

I went to a K-6 Quaker school. For our 6th grade graduation ceremony, we wanted to sing this. We were overruled and given Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game."

Songs in D Minor

23 - U2 - 11 O’Clock Tick Tock - Live at Red Rocks

Lyric - La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
I hear the children crying (la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)

https://songbpm.com/@u2/11-o-clock-tick-tock---live

Sadness Quotient - 3/11 - The sadness is that U2 have so many songs better than this one. 67 to be precise

Comment - The original version is in E Minor, but the live version goes to D Minor.
How fascinating.
To make it even more interesting on the Songs of Surrender LP it goes to G Major.
You still awake?

Next Up - We go D Minor in German

Batman

23 - Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

Relevant Lyric - You put the boom-boom into my heart (hoo-hoo)
You send my soul sky-high
When your lovin' starts
Jitterbug into my brain (yeah, yeah)
Goes bang-bang-bang
'Til my feet do the same

Batman Vibe Score - 0/10 - I mean seriously. This is about as relevant to Batman as the Pyramids

Where to Find - The Batman Lego Movie, but not the soundtrack.
This was the first song on Robin’s boombox. We will see the second one too.

Quick Hit Comment - Thats how awful this list is that this song counts. Sorry people

Next Up - Over to the Batman Returns Soundtrack with another song that really has nothing to do with Batman.

Not really.
Just the idea was good, but the pay off isn't.
Like eephus said, the most important thing is good songs.
I chose themes without knowing what was out there bar a handful of songs

The songs do get better, but we are still in filler mode on both lists.

23 - U2 - 11 O’Clock Tick Tock - Live at Red Rocks

That Red Rocks concert, when they were just becoming big, is definitely on the short list of wish I was there, dating back to the Sunday Bloody Sunday video that was all over MTV back then. I visited the amphitheater there, but unfortunately never saw a concert - what an atmosphere.

If Lazy Eye and Wham! are the filler songs, I am fully on board.

Wham!: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
Lipps Inc: Funkytown

Theme: 31 Best Albums of 1984

23. Rock Box by Run-D.M.C.

Album: Run-D.M.C.
Released: March 27

I have to laugh when I read this album was considered the birth of hardcore rap since it sounds so tame today. But that's just fine by me. This album perfectly encaptures 80s hip hop and the whole b boy era. It holds up beautifully today. 40 years later and I still don't think the electric guitar and a rap song have gone together so well as they do on Rock Box. People have been chasing this dragon for 40 years with some very uneven results.

I was able to listen to the 26s thru 23s on my drive home yesterday. It's like y'all was there with me. In spirit for sure. So thanks for the music.

It's too much to single out what stood out but a bunch sure did. Great road trippin' playlists. The eclecticism as essential to keeping me awake as the pisstop necessitating coffee.

I'll single out Charlie though. For his theme, the quality of the songs, the fun to read write-ups and for probably motivating a third watch of Mad Men. Such a great show. #3 on my list in that other thread.

23. Misirlou - Martin Denny

When this came on, I didn't recognize it for a minute, then I did and cursed Krista for using the wrong link. That confused me because this Misirlou isn't on the playlist I used for this. It is now. A dreamy cover with tropical feels that makes me want to fly south and disappear. Even if I was including surf rock covers as part of the revival stuff (which just doesn't feel right to me), I would have missed this.

I mentioned it being a top 5 seminal surf track. Some might say #1. Something often overlooked is Dale's 62 version was kinda mind blowing with the single string tremelo shredding, but not really that big a deal popularity wise. In 63 The Beach Boys covered it on Surfin' USA. That got pop culture's attention and with that a realization that Dale's version was superior.

Also when I got home last night both road weary and wired, I sat down and typed a long audiophile thing about a set up at my sister's place. I started by writing: The following, in my opinion, after 20+ years of tinkering with hi-fi, is probably the best sound you can have in your home for under a grand. I then went on and on and on and decided not to be tl/dr guy and deleted it. Should I try again without explaining the audio physics of mass loaded transmission lines, tapered quarter waves and bass reflex speaker cabinetry? :bag:

"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is a great pop song but I've never connected it with Batman.
What about his arch enemy, The Jitterbug?

and when that segment of PE was done, the girls split off to do self-defence/rape-prevention while the boys split off to do rape. aka, wrestling.

I think you should. jwb's theme is specific songs that sound great on a 2 channel system. Explain your sister's system.

It would take me less than a minute to link you to the speakers and amp but I don't wanna. I wanna write it up with the whole story and lots of other nonsense. Something is wrong with me.

You can easily get audiophile sound from over a dozen headphone options under $300 (maybe $150). I think it was Eephus who once recommended some $70 buds I bought that sounded incredible. Lost those, btw. But that's sound in your head not in your home. To get headphone quality in your home is a more expensive trick. I said I think the sister's system is the best you can get under a grand. Mic'd n' measured the $2k system I'm listening to will do better, but we're at the very edge of human hearing with either set up. My sound is wide, warm and colored by expensive tube amps, the bane of studio engineers and the manna of audiophiles. Hers is brighter, nearly as wide, just as articulate and detailed, probably sweeter highs, but my ears give up around 12k hz.

In 2025 this topic needs to be qualified with the emergence of Chi-Fi (Chinese Fidelity). There's likely a $150 Chinese amp and $300 Chinese speakers on AliExpress far better than any nerds want to admit. If I had the space I'd find the money to test a bunch of the gear I see there. But my obsession/hobby is building speakers. I've spent as much time at diyaudio as I have here. That's a hint. I'll be very surprised and pleased if any of you take on the project. It's close to as easy as it gets.

Jeez, I can't help myself. I have an errand to run. Next post I'll spill the beans.

You can find some excellent IEMs on AliExpress for under $50 but as for any IEMs, fitting the proper tips is essential.

I saw this post and thought another playlist was coming already - doesn't anyone want me to listen to any other music?

It's raining again so I'm going to have to finish the 23s while cooking dinner.

It was pretty comical taking Lou out to poop this morning. I timed it so the rain had slowed to a drizzle but the wind was howling and he wasn't having it. I carried him about a block to an apartment building that has an overhang that blocks the rain. "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" came up on the playlist while Lou was picking the perfect spot but thankfully he was expeditious about it today.

Made me laugh out loud for real. I need a dog.

Here's the speakers.
Here's the amp.

The speaker kit was $500 when we (me and my BiL) put it together Christmas 2019. $750 now.
The amp is much cheaper in Europe but I didn't check shipping.

So guessing the shipping is reasonable or shopping around more than I have helps, it can be done just under a grand still, but barely.

There. No more mystery.

I'll explain later with too many words and you can just ignore me. Oh before you wrinkle your nose at a Behringer amp, Audio Science Review doesn't mess around. Everything is mic'd and measured. This is a review of a Yamaha amp I recommend, but scroll down a little and check out how the Behringer NX1000D did. Built in dsp is the secret sauce. Paired with Solstice reference towers (the kit above), and broken in a few years, they're making headphone quality noise in a big room with glass walls and a 2 story+ ceiling. I'm hard to impress but I sure was.

I somehow got caught up and had some time to try to research a potential artist for next artist countdown. It gave me the brief feeling of an overachiever.
Is there another artist countdown next? I’d imagine, yes.
I suppose that is up to Zegras, but that was my understanding.

I know Mrs. R was going through Neil Diamond for it.

Same here in the Midwest.

I think square dancing in gym class was a national phenomenon in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. Probably a long lasting carryover from Deliverance.

Am I reading that right in that it's one speaker? So a pair is $1500? If that's true I don't think I go the DIY route then - $1500 is a solid entry point.

My son did ballroom and hip-hop in elementary school. Covid stole that from my daughter a few years later.

The ballroom was hilarious because the range of heights was extreme... so there'd be a 2' tall boy matched up with a 6' tall girl.

Here's the speakers.

Look what I found

That's the build process from the folks selling the kit. Anyone can do it. You can do it even if you don't have the clamps. Just use weights. There is some very basic soldering involved.

Two things make this kit punch way above its weight class. One is the matched Morel drivers. Mentioned in the reviews is you cannot find those drivers in manufactured speaks under $4k. I'm not searching, but that comment is old. I'd be surprised if you could find all six drivers in a pair of speakers under $7k. I've seen them in $20k speakers. They cost more than the kit. Not sure how Parts Express pulls that off, but it's likely a volume deal and also why they're back ordered.

The other thing is they're designed by Jeff Bagby (rip). He was an amazing asset to the diy audio folks for many years. Humble, helpful, kind of genius and his designs paid meticulous attention to the science behind it all. I'm close to ordering them. Currently showing a $250 discount, something tells me they'll be 999.99 when they're back in stock.

Oh my. I feel dumb. Yep. It does say that. Ooof. lol. THEY WERE $500 A FEW YEARS AGO! *****!

The price at least makes sense now. Sorry.

Um, still worth it, but I'm not interested at $1500. I'll go away now.

ETA: My BiL order these after I agreed to solder up the crossovers for him. He is a very good wood worker, has a nice shop in the basement and thought it would be fun to build the cabinets with me over Christmas. He told me they were $500. Pretty sure he didn't want my sis to know they were $500 each. So, anyway. Carry on. :) :bag:

Edit again. The 4 woofers come to $1376. So for $124 more you get the tweeters, crossover components, and cabinets. Know what? They sounded so good, I might still do it.

GTA #23 - Royce da 5'9" - I'm The King (Game Radio, III)

Quick write up here (am away from home but have laptop so will blast this one out), this is another example of them in GTA III likely looking to clear tracks to use as easily as possible, in that Game Radio, a generic East Coast rap/hip-hop station, looks to have used solely artists off of Game Recordings, a label that worked out so well that Wikipedia says they are best known from being featured in the game. Picking the best from this was a chore, in that like a couple of other stations a lot of the tracks were harshly cut to mix into another, Rising To The Top was close but I went with this, seems like a more laid back track than that, it's not the greatest but it is what it is. Royce is probably better known his other single Boom, along with collaborations with Eminem and others

"Caterpillar" by Royce and Eminem is one of my favorite tracks of the 2020s (big whoops, it was 2018—oh my!), probably because I don't keep up with a whole ton of rap music. Well, I do a little, but not much. But Royce da 5'9" is well-known in the hip-hop world to where if you're a bit of a head, you definitely ought to know who he is.

23. "Funkytown" - Lipps Inc. (1980)

"Funkytown" is a track put out by a Minnesota group called Lipps Inc. on Casablanca records back in 1980. The song came out of pretty much nowhere and flew up the charts, becoming the #1 song in twenty-eight countries, including the U.S.A. A disco/funk song released at the back end of disco's popularity, it was written by DJ Steve Greenberg and featured former Flyte Nyte vocalist Cynthia Johnson on vocals.

Johnson's earlier project, the aforementioned Flyte Nyte, might be familiar to those that follow the R&B world because the group had both Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (and later Morris Day) in it before they all changed the name Flyte Nyte to The Time before later changing it again to Morris Day and The Time. Anyway, I almost used Pseudo Echo's keytar-tastic cover for this, but I liked the original quite enough to use the original instead.

Lipps Inc. released a few more tracks as singles but was never able to match the success it had with "Funkytown." Greenberg seems like an affable guy and controls the rights to the song, which he supervises to make sure it's used appropriately and doesn't over-saturate the market, regardless of monetary offer for said song.
