krista4 – Chicagoland

Lincoln Park Pirates – Steve Goodman

Artist connection to Chicago (1-5 scale): 5 - Steve Goodman was as Chicago as Lincoln Park Towing. Wait, what, you ask? OK, he was as Chicago as the Cubs' billy goat curse.
Song connection to Chicago (1-10 scale): 10

A few years after I moved to Chicago, I bought my first condo, the top floor of a three-flat. On the first floor was an art gallery, which was owned by Francois, a truly despicable Frenchman who hated me because I wouldn't replace the wood floors in my unit with carpeting.

Anyway, the condo came with a parking space in back, which I mostly didn't use but occasionally rented a car for one reason or another and parked it there. One day I went out to get in the car and it was gone. I supposed it could have been stolen, but I knew that Lincoln Park Towing trucks roamed the neighborhood, so I thought I'd try them first. Called and learned that indeed they had my car.

Lincoln Towing Service required you to go to a tow lot on the far west side of the city, unpleasant not only because it was a long cab ride but was also located in one of the worst areas of Chicago. Sure that I could correct their mistake of accidentally towing my car from my own spot, I brought my purchase paperwork showing I owned the condo, which also showed that I had been parked in the spot owned by me. Oh, how young and naive I was! :lmao:

The total for towing, storage, and whatever the hell they made up was something like $230. Picture me, earnestly certain that they will want to acknowledge their mistake and release the car to me. Then picture a big fat Chicago guy, through a small window in a big metal cage, with the strongest "Da Bears" accent imaginable, responding to my pleas with, "Yeah, yeah, maybe it's your spot, but that'll still be $230." And they also make you sign something saying you won't protest it on your credit card.

This, my friends, is Lincoln Towing Service. That Wikipedia page might read pretty amazingly for anyone who hasn't lived here. State agencies, alderpeople, various mayors - everyone has tried to stop what's called their "reign of terror," but nothing helps. Steve Goodman recorded this song about them in 1972! A few years ago, the state temporarily revoked their license for some of these practices, but they just changed their name for a while, and now they're back to being Lincoln Towing again, randomly towing cars, stripping them for parts, or demanding exorbitant amounts to return them. It's the most Chicago-y thing in any of the songs I've selected.

I didn't consider two other songs from Goodman: "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" or the Cubs anthem "Go Cubs Go." But not everyone here is a Cubs fan, while everyone here has probably interacted with Lincoln Towing. Consider this a "body of work" selection for Goodman, though.

By the way, I knew that he also wrote "City of New Orleans" but didn't realize until putting together this list that he had written "You Never Even Called Me by My Name." What a sad loss of talent when he died of leukemia at age 36.

Total: 15
I associate Steve Goodman with Chicago. I'm glad he is here on the countdown. You may have read this, but John Prine (is he considered a Chicagoan?) helped Goodman out as well on "You Never Even Called Me by My Name." One of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs, "Banana Republics," was written by Goodman. Also, my favorite train song of all time is "City of New Orleans." I love it. When I lived in Florida, I listened to that song every morning on my way to work (the Arlo version).

What a pleasant surprise.
I had this song at #14 in my Röyksopp MAD countdown
You didn't really think I'd overlook them, did you?

My number one pick is really obvious. Umlauts, Baby!
I was more hopeful, but such an interesting track to pick of the 31 I listed.
Regarding your number 1, As the scrabble stuff demonstrated Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Lucky i like surprises
Ok, you got me here.
I have never heard of this delightful song.
How on earth did you come across it?

KROQ played it a lot back in the day.
Australia was such a backwater for playing out of the box songs.
There was a University radio station that had an audience of about 4 and the more renowned Triple JJJ who has attracted international attention for some of the things they do. Thats it.
I had to rely on going to the more interesting record stores and speaking to the staff for ages about interesting stuff they had heard.

Scares me how much stiff id love, that ive never heard.

#2: PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS - GAMIN' ON YA

I will be pivoting to these two for my MAD31 part 5 artist whenever that fires up. No need to do two - oddly enough damn near everything I was going to say about my other artist applies to People Under the Stairs. When I was digging through the pile of burned cds in the closet I noticed there was very little hip hop in the pile. Only 2 albums stood out: The Roots - Phrenology and People Under the Stairs - O.S.T. I remember listening to that 2nd album a lot, so a couple years ago when I got done with The Roots and that book, I started listening more to PUTS. Part of the bump was because of remembering liking that album a lot and the other reason is because I was surprised how few listens they had/month and it fit my under 1M/month shtick.

Fast forward to the end of last year, and I was surprised that the only non-MAD31 artist to show up on my top listens for the years was these guys at #4. What I realized was I wasn't even doing it for research, I just was loving the albums that much. I posted earlier about how picky I feel I am with albums from the genre and how that seemed to hold me back from really loving an artist. They have 10 albums and a few EPs, and I didn't not find a song I didn't like. There wasn't an album I came across I couldn't listen to start to finish, and they have 5-6 albums that I think are 10/10 level albums for my ears. I found the perfect hip hop artist for my tastes, and I will be sharing them with you next time we do an artist. I think even people that don't really like the genre will find a track or two they dig.

Recommended Listening: We will get into that much more soon. I have 30 locked in, but I am waffling a little bit on a B-side to use. I will toss out a couple more tracks that weren't on the main albums and weren't in consideration for the 31. My playlist here started at 100+ after my initial pass through the albums when decided to see what I could come up with. Drumbox was the the hardest cut of the 3, but there are other tunes where they sink into that old school shtick I like better. I took Gamin' On Ya for this playlist because I thought the funny video game samples and mentions would make some of you laugh or at least pique your interest for more.

NEXT: I make a pitch to Shuke and others to give my favorite band an honest try with a couple albums.

John Prine would score a solid 4 on the Chicago-y-ness scale of 1-5.

GTA #3 - Gold - Spandau Ballet (Wave 103, VC)

Wave 103's a really great station, hosted by Adam First (seemingly a real life DJ in Idaho or something), playing a mix of new wave, post punk and any sort of crap that has synthesizers and drum machines. It was really hard to limit the selections of this station to just the one - other stations just had a bunch of better second best tracks, but Wave had Frankie Goes to Hollywood, previously used by someone else Flock of Seagulls, there's Human League, Blondie, ABC, Tears for Fears, Kim Wilde, you can go on. Pop fans of the 80's will love this one. My pick is Gold, maybe surprisingly Spandau Ballet's second biggest chart success in the UK (after True), only coming in at number two, but a bona fide eighties classic.

There's two weird or sad (depending on your perspective) key memories I have of this track:

1) It being played in the first lecture I had on intellectual property when I was studying law, on account of a case most of the band had against Gary Kemp in relation to royalties and use of the Spandau Ballet name.
2) The first time I took the train into Berlin all the way from England (in first class all the way, given it was affordable to be a baller at that time), where I had the whole Wave 103 soundtrack on my phone, and backtimed it so when I started it playing so this track would play right when I arrived into Spandau station. Worked perfectly. Then immediately hit delays due to engineering works so we're sat there for 20 minutes rather than just rolling the remaining few miles into the Hauptbahnhof. Never change Deutsche Bahn.

Also, my favorite train song of all time is "City of New Orleans."

Good morning, America, how are you?
Hey don't you know me/I'm your native son
I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans
I'll be done five hundred miles when the day is done

Is that close? It's from memory. The Willie version.
That's right, except the last line is I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done. I love Willie's version, too, especially the harmonica at the beginning. In Florida, I had some of the cassette volumes by various artists called "Super Hits of the 70s Have a Nice Day Vol. whatever. The song was on one of those.

GTA #2 - Hold The Line - Toto (K-DST, SA)

Not a huge amount to write up on this one, given we have already credited both the station in question and the band in question in previous write ups. Hold The Line is Toto's debut single, and maybe one of the finest debut singles of all time, and the strongest selection of the station which featured the most tracks in my full 100 list. Really not much to say - amazing guitar solo, peak classic rock.

At number 1? We have a track by a British artist that is another debut single, was number 1 your side of the pond, but not our side. Odd that.

That sounds exactly like the Now series we have here in the UK, which nearly 40 years after it started I'm shocked to see is still going in CD format apparently

I didn't realize you were a lawyer barrister law-talkin' guy, too. :)

By the way, you owe 30 write-ups for the mystery theme.

I think I remember those cassettes. With the yellow smiley face on them? Maybe not.
Here is what the CD version looked like. Did you ever have any Have A Nice Day Cafe's in your area? I think it was a chain back in the 90s/early 2000s. The one in Raleigh had a bus out front that was a duplicate of The Partridge Family bus. Inside was 70s décor, and they sold food, and had a dance floor with 70s music going. They sold some drinks in big plastic fish bowls, and the fish bowl had a big smiley face with Have A nice Day Cafe on it. I still have one of those bowls that is filled with concert tickets and other stuff. When I was in college there was bar I frequented called Grogs. They sold specific cocktails in glass fish bowls for $10. People got so drunk, and some would try to smuggle out the fish bowls, and you'd hear them shatter outside on the sidewalk when it would drop from their coat. The bar eventually stopped selling those. I think they ran out of the fish bowl glasses.

I thought the plot of Thelma and Louise was somehow involved at one point. Did they play scrabble in the movie? I don't remember that.

That guess used some of the same letters as the scrabble game, so that being a “warmer” clue totally makes sense.

Yeah my higher education is definitely unorthodox :)

31 - Welsh indie rock. Their first number 1 somehow. Banger
30 - Turn of the 80's/90's rap. Late substitution given I don't know how the thread would appreciate a Frank Zappa track referencing many unorthodox sexual practices
29 - Classic rock instrumental. Have seen these live, albeit while twatted after a work pub quiz and most of the morning the day after was spent on the toilet
28 - Would have been picked in the UK countdown, or at least another track of theirs would have been, but for the small technicality that they weren't all British
27 - Was listening to a lot of house/trance in the late 90's and early 00's, this topped the charts here, it's a great song
26 - Seemed to be played all the time, either in folks' cars or on the radio, at the time. Not the biggest of Freddie/Queen fans but this one hits a spot
25 - Filler that fits the theme and tries to give a hint, don't dislike the track by any stretch but the first band I found that fit the theme
24 - A mix of 27 and 25. Certainly better songs of the genre, but I like the genre
23 - This pops up on an old school radio station quite a bit when they're not live and they're replaying previous sets. A band I have little knowledge of, but it hits the spot
22 - Public Enemy primarily picked on account of working the theme, the track in question being used on account of being the opening track of the fourth Tony Hawk game, a series that was big in my uni days
21 - Pure filler
20 - Just a fantastic bit of late 90's indie from their most successful album
19 - See #23
18 - Got to chuck in something I used in my long list to throw people off, right?
17 - Filler. Know little about the band, only track I know is their collab with Public Enemy which would have thrown off the theme, so went with what appeared to be their most known track
16 - 90's pop/dance, mainly included to try (and fail) to point people in the right direction
15 - Another one off the Tony Hawk soundtrack. One where the band name was the first to fit the theme and then the track followed logically
14 - Yeah, not a big Queen fan, but do like this one (Ronnie Baxter darts walk on represent), I'll allow it
13 - This one was huge as I'm leaving school. It's not Supergrass's biggest hit by any stretch of the imagination, but it's by far my favourite track of theirs
12 - Got to get in some Sheffield references, don't I?
11 - Kind of another one where the band got picked before the track, there were clearly many routes that I could have gone with this one (it's probably not even my favourite track off Stankonia) but I tried for a more known selection here
10 - Same again. Except here I picked probably my favourite track of hers
9 - Been used in a MAD countdown earlier, and one of my favourite bands that I've seen on multiple occasions. I don't recall this one showing up on the countdown in question, but I can be fact checked on that, but it's another thing where we can look back at #23 as it's on the same playlist
8 - Kind of a desperation play to get an artist with this number. Sunchyme would have been the more obvious pick, but I guess internationally this might potentially be more well known?
7 - This is the first single I bought
6 - The album this came off hit right as I was leaving school and heading to uni, and this was the pick off it. Not written by Albarn, this was a Coxon effort, but the soon to be released best off solidified the Blur > Oasis thoughts
5 - Probably top 1 of bands I've never seen live that I will never see live and probably top 1 of their track listing. It's chalky but who cares
4 - Another just find whatever band I can and be done with it. They've done nothing else of note
3 - Similar, just find band. At least here I could go into a MAD countdown and look for something up at the top end
2 - Early 90's electronic stuff. This might have been the hardest band to find, although mental blockages might have made me miss something super duper obvious. My poor diet is indeed based on ignorance and crisps
1 - It's not revealed, but you can surely work it out. Early 00's British indie-rock. Beyond that, I'm telling you nothing

Is that what they did with Brad Pitt?

Your notebook is usually better than this! At one point I highlighted those that were "closer" than the others, although no one was anywhere near right, and chose those where sequence mattered. I did explain this. :) Then I told you all that the clue and reason I'd highlighted them was "the order matters."

I can't help that you all don't read my posts.

It wasn't a 'warmer" clue. Again, reading is fundamental, but apparently lost on this group. Well, just my posts.

Oops, my bad. It was “closer”, not “warmer”.

Lloyd Christmas: “I was WAY off!”

They actually do mean two different things in this context. I gave a list of guesses and indicated which were closer than the others. Later, the word "warmer" indicated than an individual guess was going in the right direction, which is, again, different.

You're really pissing me off, but please feel free to keep debating this and complaining that you couldn't figure out what someone else did and blaming it on the fact I tried to help you guys, which I didn't need to ****ing do in the first place. Really, **** off.

I’m sorry. Wasn’t my intent. I was stupidly trying to be funny but I can see how it came off as snarky/whiny.

#, Please # 2
Song: 4
Artist: Tool
Year: 1993

(Youtube Version) TOOL - 4° (Audio)
(Live version) Tool - 4 Degrees Live [Soundboard] HQ

4 Lines:
I'll kill what you want me to,
take what's left and eat it.
Take all or nothing.
Life's just too short to push it away

Number Theory:

Now, I know that I don’t need to explain the temperature part. Why 4 though? Well, best to paraphrase from the artist. Maynard Keenan has stated that the title comes from the anal cavity being warmer than the vaginal one. How much? 4 degrees, 4 degrees warmer. He’s said that it’s less a sexual song than about being more open to things in general. Maybe, but at the same time it’s too easy to read between the lines here.

Tool had a few other choices here, considering “10000 Days” and the 15 minute plus “7empest”.. The choice here definitely would’ve been “Forty Six & 2” if the start was more numerical. I almost included a cover that had titled it “46 &2”. That said, I do really like this song, and this was one of the songs that stuck with me when first listening to Undertow. It still does, really. It’s hard to say where it ranks in a Tool list (where “Top 31” means around “top half”), but I probably still like it more than any of the hits on the album. YMMV.

Significant Digits:
Off album#: 1 (with the note that the Opiate EP was their first release)
Track: 8

Artist crossover with other playlists: 34
(Known: 33) Prince (6 times) firmly in the lead. Skid Row’s full crossover #1 in our hearts.

Next on the countdown, another song with 2 numbers, neither of which matches its rank.

Last night we were at the emergency vet until after 1 AM with our 17-year-old cat Boo. She had been acting off since Friday night and by last night was unable to use her litter box. Imaging did not reveal any blockages or evidence of constipation, so they think she has a UTI and gave her antibiotics for it.

However, the images included the lower part of her lungs, and revealed some sort of lump there. Further testing would be needed to know exactly what it is, but they did not think it was related to her current symptoms. We are not going to pursue it further unless/until she develops symptoms that seem related to it. We do not think it is a good idea to subject a 17-year-old cat to aggressive treatment should it come to that.

My son, who is on the autism spectrum, is very attached to this cat, but he agrees that she shouldn't be subjected to anything that would hurt her quality of life.
And I’m back at the emergency vet with Boo. Same symptoms as above. There was another time in between that I didn’t post about.

After the second time, an ultrasound revealed inflammation in her intestines. A chest X-ray confirmed the one spot on her lungs but no others. Lab work ruled out large-cell lymphoma (which is basically a death sentence) but she might have IBS or small-cell lymphoma.

The pattern is that she gets antibiotics, is fine for a few weeks and then the same symptoms happen again. I think we can conclude this is an inflammation issue that isn’t going away. We may need to start her on steroids.

1) It being played in the first lecture I had on intellectual property when I was studying law, on account of a case most of the band had against Gary Kemp in relation to royalties and use of the Spandau Ballet name.

I didn't realize you were a lawyer barrister law-talkin' guy, too. :)

By the way, you owe 30 write-ups for the mystery theme.
I thought the plot of Thelma and Louise was somehow involved at one point. Did they play scrabble in the movie? I don't remember that.
That guess used some of the same letters as the scrabble game, so that being a “warmer” clue totally makes sense.

Well, although you were really snarky (or sounded that way), I definitely overreacted and shouldn’t have included that last sentence! Apologies for that. We’re good.

And I read your posts. Sometimes, my brain hurts. I can't believe I mentioned Scrabble and didn't get it right then.

I was absolutely certain you were going to get it then!

I told titus when he sent it to me that I never would have gotten it, but I did think one of you would eventually.

The steroids have worked wonders for our Floofers, whose issues I posted about here before and who had somewhat similar symptoms and potential diagnoses. She’s gained back all the weight she’d lost and hasn’t vomited once in the six-ish weeks she’s been on them. Complete turnaround. I hope your Boo will start feeling better soon.

We and the vet are reasonably sure that she has IBS or small cell lymphoma. She is being started on steroids and is also being given a short term drug that helps with colitis-type symptoms.

We are not doing invasive diagnostics or (if cancer was confirmed) chemo.

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

Ice Machine – Röyksopp
Susanne Sundfør has such a beautiful voice. I heard her first with this collaboration with M83:
I know right.
She has several solo albums, but its her work with Röyksopp that hooks me in.
In my Röyksopp countdown she had songs with them at #1, #3, #8, #12, #14 and #18.
They only have 9 songs together. As by this post Röyksopp work incredibly well with female vocalists like Sundfør and Robyn

#, Please # 2
Song: 4
Artist: Tool
Year: 1993

Number Theory:

Now, I know that I don’t need to explain the temperature part. Why 4 though? Well, best to paraphrase from the artist. Maynard Keenan has stated that the title comes from the anal cavity being warmer than the vaginal one. How much? 4 degrees, 4 degrees warmer. He’s said that it’s less a sexual song than about being more open to things in general. Maybe, but at the same time it’s too easy to read between the lines here.
Oh, gotta say that is some kind of inspiration there for Maynard.

It wasn't a 'warmer" clue. Again, reading is fundamental, but apparently lost on this group. Well, just my posts.
Your hints did not help me, but it wasn't your fault. I just let my mind get bogged on the "storyline" of the songs themselves that even your clues seemed to push that angle (once again me, not you).

I honestly don't know how anyone's mind went to "scrabble" but it did so obviously the theme wasn't impossible to figure out - although for me it probably was.

"Two sides to the equation" pushes a "storyline"? I tried to get you guys off the storyline several times, including when I posted the two "getting warmer" guesses multiple times, one of which involved adding and one of which was just a list of letters. If you'd combined those two... It was really frustrating to me to keep trying to get you guys away from the way you were going, and it would work for a while but then you'd go back into it. There is no one happier that this is over than I am! Lesson learned; never again.

"Two sides to the equation" pushes a "storyline"?
Yeah my mind was so bogged down with "Break up and starting over" theme, that I saw that clues as "telling both sides of the story"

This was definitely a ME problem.
Yeah, if you're already there, you're trying to fit it into what you think you already know. That makes sense.

I meant the "two sides to the equation" as two things. First and more obviously, I was trying to get you all to see an equation - math - in your head. Second, people seemed almost entirely stuck on the song titles instead of the artist names, and I hoped it could be a subtle clue to remember there were two parts to each selection. That's also part of the reason that I highlighted Mt. Man's thinking earlier in the thread, when he at least mentioned that it could be linked to the artists instead of the songs.
