Second what Mrs. R. said just now. It was a very, very cool result upon the reveal. Thanks, k4 and titus for giving us a great riddle/puzzle, and I love your generosity and that you spent time and thought creating it for us.

So let's get to the ones (tomarrow?) and wind up what has been a very cool countdown with some cool and intriguing sidebars. I've enjoyed KarmaPolice's guessing Yambag's list. I get to metal out :headbang:a bit like I'm a junior/senior in high school again.

Did I ever tell you music nerds that there was a group of kids from one of the cliques in high school—the senior soccer players—that simply and affectionately called me "Metal" as a nickname when I was a touch younger than them (by a year)? 'Tis true. Still brings a smile to this day. We'd be changing before practice and the conversation would turn and somebody would ask "Hey ever hear of that band?" "I don't know. Ask Metal." It became sort of a standard refrain. LOL.

Anyway, cool story bro, right? Just riffing on a memory.

Songs in D Minor - The Angriest Key of All

2 - Rage Against the Machine - Killing In the Name

Lyric - Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
Come on!
Yeah! Come on!

**** you, I won't do what you tell me

Source - https://www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/view/rage-against-the-machine/killing-in-the-name

Sadness Quotient - 5/11 - Anger is sadness to a degree

Comment - This song hit at the perfect time in my life for maximum impact. It still sets a mood today. An anthem.

Next Up - A statement song at number one.
Have we proven that D Minor is the saddest key of all? The opposite.
Lets go out with that in mind.

Batman

2 - Prince - Batdance

Relevant Lyric - I've seen the future and it will be
I've seen the future and it will be
BATMAN, BATMAN
I've seen the future and it will be
BATMAN (house, do it, house)
"And where, and where ... is the BATMAN?"

Batman Vibe Score - 11/10 An artist who devotes a considerable period of time focused on Batman and produces spectacular results gets a bonus point

Where to Find - Batman (Album) by Prince

Quick Hit Comment - The imagination Prince shows here is out of this world. Ultimately I think he understand Batman better than Tim ****ing Burton

Next Up - What could be left?

Last night we were at the emergency vet until after 1 AM with our 17-year-old cat Boo. She had been acting off since Friday night and by last night was unable to use her litter box. Imaging did not reveal any blockages or evidence of constipation, so they think she has a UTI and gave her antibiotics for it.

However, the images included the lower part of her lungs, and revealed some sort of lump there. Further testing would be needed to know exactly what it is, but they did not think it was related to her current symptoms. We are not going to pursue it further unless/until she develops symptoms that seem related to it. We do not think it is a good idea to subject a 17-year-old cat to aggressive treatment should it come to that.

My son, who is on the autism spectrum, is very attached to this cat, but he agrees that she shouldn't be subjected to anything that would hurt her quality of life.
And I’m back at the emergency vet with Boo. Same symptoms as above. There was another time in between that I didn’t post about.

After the second time, an ultrasound revealed inflammation in her intestines. A chest X-ray confirmed the one spot on her lungs but no others. Lab work ruled out large-cell lymphoma (which is basically a death sentence) but she might have IBS or small-cell lymphoma.

The pattern is that she gets antibiotics, is fine for a few weeks and then the same symptoms happen again. I think we can conclude this is an inflammation issue that isn’t going away. We may need to start her on steroids.

The steroids have worked wonders for our Floofers, whose issues I posted about here before and who had somewhat similar symptoms and potential diagnoses. She’s gained back all the weight she’d lost and hasn’t vomited once in the six-ish weeks she’s been on them. Complete turnaround. I hope your Boo will start feeling better soon.
We and the vet are reasonably sure that she has IBS or small cell lymphoma. She is being started on steroids and is also being given a short term drug that helps with colitis-type symptoms.

We are not doing invasive diagnostics or (if cancer was confirmed) chemo.
I'm sorry you guys are going through this. Both IBD and small cell lymphoma respond well to steroids in most cases. I think Vitamin B12 supplementation also makes them feel much better.
It's been a rough week in vet med. I hope Boo is feeling better.

Thanks. She seems better today.

Our other cat is on B12 supplementation. Boo’s tests didn’t show a B12 deficiency.

Yeah, I thought it was really cool of titus to do that!

Our Floofs just finished a series of six B12 shots (one more to come in a month), so that's probably what's helped her as well.

Yeah, I thought it was really cool of titus to do that!

And without trying to make too big of a point about it, you for your generosity towards our charities of choice (which is still so above and beyond I feel impelled to point it out but will stop if you ever get embarrassed), compiling and acknowledging the guesses, and playing along in general. Very cool. Fin.

Single (Named) Lady #2 - Beyoncé - "Irreplaceable" (2006)
Full name: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles

Beyoncé's first name comes from her mother's maiden name. Like a number of artists on my list, she started off singing in church and in local talent shows. She began her professional career as a member of a girl group named Girl's Tyme that competed on Star Search. They went through several more names and dropped a couple of members before eventually hitting it big as Destiny's Child. Beyoncé eventually went solo and went on to be the greatest female Pop star of all time (no matter what the FFA poll numbers say).

"Irreplaceable" was a #1 hit from her second solo album. Like a lot of modern Pop music, it has six credited songwriters including Beyoncé and Ne-Yo. It's a breakup song but Beyoncé delivers it without a lick of regret. She tells her man to put his stuff in box and offers to call him a cab. When he protests and calls her a fool, she boasts she could get another man in a minute which she undoubtedly could because she's Beyoncé. Her vocal is a perfect blend of playfulness and defiance.

The video follows the breakup storyline of the lyrics before concluding with Beyonce performing with an all-girl band. I haven't researched the subject extensively but I don't think curlers have ever looked finer.

ditkaburgers - Girl Groups X Boy Bands #2

PowerLittle MixGirl GroupLondon, EnglandOne of the best girl groups in the last decade. I stand by this. The vocals, THE DANCING! Shocked they never made it further in the US. Power is still my go-to song in the gym so when I need some energy

Desperately trying to get through playlists before we hit #1 tomorrow. I didn't have a lot of new-to-me favorites on the #3 playlist, mostly because I knew and loved so many of the selections already.

New ones:
John Denver's "Jenny Dreamed of Trains" - his voice sounded strong and beautiful on this.
Hans Zimmer's "Man of Steel" etc. - lovely, would have listened to this for much longer.

Yeah, I thought it was really cool of titus to do that!

100% Things like this are at the tippy top of reasons that make these boards great.

#2s were similar to the #3s in that I loved the playlist mostly because there were several favorites on there, like "Living for the City," "El Paso," "Purple Rain," "Little Wing" and many, many more. But still there were a few more new-to-me favorites on this list than on the #3s:

"Slow Train" by the Staple Singers - well, duh
"Return to Serenity" by Testament gets a shout-out in the "not usually my jam" category. This was surprisingly melodic and interesting.
"Persephone" by Cocteau Twins - I don't remember why now, but I liked it.
"Above the World" by Andy Summers was cool
"Busman's Holiday" by the Allah-Las drove OH crazy trying to guess who it was.

This playlist also had:
- Three Days Grace followed immediately by Three Dog Night, which seemed like a "storyline" that would please the masses here
- More than the usual number of songs and artists that would fit Mrs. KP's "animal kingdom" theme!

I got a little carried away, as I am known to do from time to time. I loved the memories that Yambag's idea conjured up as well as a few other playlists. It was interesting for me to see where the differences were for the same genre and years to focus on.

I like that HS memory. For me, metal was a bridge for different groups around school. I didn't have a big group of friends, but I could talk to just about anyone because of the metal. I seem to have something in my arsenal that I could b.s to people about in school and at work.

Here were my guesses to Yambag after a couple rounds of clues and after the countdown started. As you can see, I only batted around 50/50 and was pretty bad at the end of the alphabet. We will see tomorrow if I got 1 more right.

Entombed
Exodus
GWAR
Helloween
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
King Diamond
Megadeth
Metallica

Morbid Angel

Ozzy
Napalm Death

Yea I was very happy with the reveal too, and like others I was way off. I kept focusing on my first (maybe only) guess - "this is your life K4" and tried to shoehorn future efforts into that general theme (someone's or some couple's story), because it made the most sense to me. I considered artists but could not find any connection. I'll never be a code breaker I guess. And thank you for doing this @krista4 - it was fun. I also like this countdown's playlists because they are all over the place.

The Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def album isn't on Spotify yet

Hadn't even heard he put a new one out. I'll have to look for it. Black On Both Sides is one of the finest hip hop albums ever. No exaggeration. It's that good.

eta* I wouldn't count on hearing it via streaming or Spotify. Seems there are a whole lot of shenanigans (reddit's terminology) going on with this album. It's supposed to drop March 28th, and was supposed to have been available to livestream for $9.99 on Bandcamp this past February 7th, but there was also a pre-order of an album called MONEY CHRISTMAS (never fulfilled) and a whole host of other things that are leading me to think this might be problematic. I'd at least wait until March 28th to cry foul or delay, but I'm not too optimistic about it after a quick glance around the internet.

I'm always curious about front to back covers of full albums so my first full listen of the week was

Branford Marsalis and his quartet cover Keith Jarrett's 1974 album in its entirety. @wikkidpissah was a huge fan of Jarrett and like Dale, the pianist is best known as an improviser but he's a fine composer as well. Marsalis and his working group stretch the original 46 minute album to over an hour so there are a lot of notes. Marsalis and drummer Justin Faulkner are probably more technically proficient than their counterparts in Jarrett's European Quartet but Jarrett has an inimitable style.

Jarrett has a bit of a reputation as being austere perfectionist but Belonging is very melodic and quite accessible. Branford's homage is too; it's very listenable but I prefer the original. Dale would have probably hated it lol.

#1 songs!!!!!!11111

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

Jerk-Off - Tool

Summary: Tool is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. With the incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band has been described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. Prior to the release of their latest album, 2019’s Fear Inoculum, the band had sold more than 13 million albums in the US alone and has won four Grammy Awards.

Times Seen Live in Concert: 0

Personal Connection: Along with Nine Inch Nails, Tool is the other reason I wanted to include 1992 in my playlist. Only one album makes that cut, and it’s before they veered into a more progressive style, but it’s fantastic nonetheless. I bought 1993’s Undertow after seeing the video for Sober and listened to it pretty much non-stop. 1996’s Aenima certainly did not disappoint and is arguably even better than its predecessor. Unfortunately, they lost me after that as I simply did not like the direction they went in, although the most recent Fear Inoculum has some good stuff on it. Another band I never got to see live back then and refused to pay the prices they were charging with their last tour.

Other songs to consider: Aenima, Forty Six & 2

krista4 – Chicagoland

Far, Far Away – Wilco

Score: 100

Is "Far, Far Away" by Wilco really the most Chicago-y song? Of course not. But I couldn't have something about Lincoln Towing Service be my #1, so I made the call to move Wilco up and give them a lifetime achievement award. I chose "Far, Far Away" over "Via Chicago" in terms of songs mentioning Chicago, because the latter (deservedly) gets selected here a lot so I wanted to highlight this beauty instead.

In addition to the various Chicago songs, the Wilco Towers on the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and this wonderful real-Chicago-centric video for Everyone Hides, it seems that Jeff Tweedy is everywhere I go these days, so I consider him the Chicago-y-est person on the planet right now.

@Yambag - we almost had a 4th the same. I've switched my Tool song 3x, but Jerk-Off was in there for a bit.
That's a nice surprise, figured it was obscure enough that it would not be on the radar!
I forget where I ranked it in comfortablynumb's countdown, but if it was not top 10, it was near it - by far my favorite on Opiate and may be my favorite from their pre-Aenima catalog.

1.

Who?
– Carlos Santana

What? – Santana

Where? – Town Hall, Giants Stadium, Garden State Arts Center, The Beacon Theater

When? – 1993, 1995, 1997

Why? – Carlos plays with such love and joy. He loves his audience, and it show in his speeches and playing. At the Giants Stadium show, he was an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band, I found DMB so boring except for when Carlos came out on stage and was on fire playing All Along the Watchtower with the DMB. Long may you live, Carlos.

-OZ- - song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe

I Was Made For Lovin' You - KISS
I have no idea what’s happening in this Scooby doo video (please Scooby Doo this crap) but it’s awesome and irrelevant to the inclusion here.

This comes from a what if episode this past December, in which everyone’s favorite fowl mouth develops a relationship with our favorite intern, Darcey, played by the equally vivacious Kat dennings.

Wholesome moment
Does anyone want to know how She gave birth to an egg?
“Parents are the greatest heroes of all”

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Atomic Bomb (Spotify) - William Onyeabor (Nigeria)
Oh, the playlist title!

Third appearance for Onyeabor for my list. Along with Ebo Taylor, only artist to appear that much. Close between this one and Fantastic Man for my favorite by him. I enjoy what I’ve heard from him, but not enough material for an artist 31. I think I shared the documentary about his life earlier, but I’ll link again.

I may throw in a couple of more tracks from him in my playlist wrap as some bonus tracks. I’ll polish that up later and post. I probably should have named my theme more like “Circa 1970s Music from Africa” or “Songs on my iTunes Afrobeat Playlist whether they are Afrobeat or not,” as strayed from just Afrobeat to include a bunch of Afrofunk/Afrofunk/etc., but hopefully enjoyed and happy to see some found some new-to-me likes along the way.

It has been a fun thread. I’ve been listening along, but haven’t been able to comment on the likes along the way as much. Thanks as always to @krista4 for organizing (and the charity contest) and @KarmaPolice for assembling the Spotify lists.

Me too - that is why I talked myself out of Tool being a guess for your playlist. I thought I was pushing it with two EPs being the reason you wanted some 1992 in there. Loved the theme, tunes, and discussion - thanks!

Same, it was a great trip down memory lane and I now have a new metal playlist of bands I did not listen to much thanks to you and rockaction.

What did you add to the mix to listen to more? I'm glad I did a Death deep dive, and I have Danzig, Forbidden, and Helloween added to my list to dive into more.
