Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (3 Viewers)

Guesses:
  • Songs about resilience in the face of adversity
  • Songs about the importance of progress

One per person per round, but I don't think you guessed before so I'll take these. :)

You don't have my guess from last time on this list. Please confirm it is wrong before I guess again.

@krista4 I had an incorrect guess last time too of first two words of song titles in order of lyrics from The Youngbloods’ Get Together.

All of the above are incorrect, and I'll update the list with them (as well as Chaos's joke one).

Ilov80s - One song from each of the 31 best albums of 1984

Speed Your Love to Me - Simple Minds
Thought I grouped this with the other bit.
Nevermind. See below
Yo Mama – World’s Worst Superheroes

Man On The Moon - REM
Loving the write ups so much.
Great theme and execution.
MrsKarmaPolice – Animal Kingdom

Bulls On Parade - Rage Against the Machine
This song is great.
They had a difficult job following up Killing In the Name, but as a stand alone track Bulls holds up well
Zegras11 – New wave

Der Kommissar - After The Fire
The history of this song is fascinating.
Falco (Rock Me Amadeus) - Had a huge hit with it in Europe, but its entirely in German.
After the Fire sensing an opportunity did a english enough cover.
Amazingly the Falco version hit #7 in Australia and the After the Fire version hit #17
In Canada Falco’s version hit #11, while After the Fires went to #12.

Most other countries picked one or the other as the dominant version.
Theme: 31 Best Albums of 1984

29 .Speed Your Love to Me by Simple Minds

Album: Sparkle in the Rain
Released: Feb 6

A transitional album as they adopted a stadium sized sound. Dubbed by some as U3, the listener can decide for themselves if that's a cutting insult at their lack of originality or simply an acknowledgement of a new broadly popular sound. For me, the bombastic Speed Your Love to Me is the standout track. I know this band will never be able to separate themslves from The Breakfast Club (at least not in the States) but to me, the song I've chosen here is my favorite of theirs. It didn't do much here but this was a top 20 hit in the UK where the band always seemed to have far greater success.

My preference on this album is Up on the Catwalk, closely followed by Speed your love to me.
Waterfront is stadium pap. And a prime reason they were on the U3 bandwagon.
Jim Kerr, lead singer, has an ego the size of Glasgow, but I still cant help being a fan. Especially of the New Gold Dream album before Sparkle in the Rain.

GTA #29 - Herbie Hancock - Rockit (Wildstyle, Vice City)

Flicking back between games now, and we go to the first of two selections off Wildstyle, appearing in a pirate radio style, so being one of the few stations in the series that doesn't have commercials for legendary products such as Thor's Personal Norse Power Program or Pet Stuffers. Hosted by IRL DJ Mr Magic, appearing as basically himself, Wildstyle plays a mix of old school hip hop and electro, and Rockit is the second selection in the 31 - a fairly well known scratch/electro instrumental that hit the top 10 widely across Europe and the top of the US dance charts. Possibly one that you might have heard but can't put the name to the track
I’ve been caught by other drivers multiple times poppin’ and lockin’ by myself while blasting this in my car. Love this song.

Better watch out. Machine Gun Kelly got pulled over for excessive air drumming once.

Random thoughts....

#30s:

The Rain - freakin' loved it. I don't know why, but the "..and him" cracked me up, and then the ending hit.
Who Knew - as in, who knew I liked P!nk so much.
I really thought this was a scorchy pick when Apply Some Pressure started playing. Good, fun song.
Hell yeah - Funky Kingston!! I posted elsewhere after reading the book Oz suggested, I've been getting to genre's I normally don't touch (reggae, jazz) to figure out what I do like. I was so mad seeing this artist on Shuke's list..
Grey Matter was in my top 10, so I loved seeing this here. It was a song that popped into my head when you posted the genre.
Nothin' But a Good Time - :mullet: :headbang: This almost made my album listen list, but instead I just listened to this one and Fallen Angel 3x each. I'm good not hearing tracks 8 and 9 ever again.

Added to the main listening queue:

I gave @Yambag a guess of his next 3 and batted .666 (not rounding up for metal's sake). I got the Cs artist wrong. I went with Corrosion of Conformity, but got his #9 and #28 correct. Anyway, Candlemass was added to my metal deep dive list. Not a band I have gotten around to, and seeing you and RW hold them in high regard is all the push I needed.
Echo the above with @rockaction's opinions in a genre I am trying to get more into, so Quasimoto/Madlib got added to my Hip Hop folder. Loved the vibe and beats on this one.
Even @MrsKarmaPolice is throwing me curves with something I've never heard before. I really liked The Animals of the World, and just listened to a few more off that album and those great as well. Thinking about your post and @jwb's theme, this one sounds like they recorded outside by a campfire. Great atmosphere to the song with headphones on.
@MAC_32's theme and songs have been great and hitting home this past couple weeks. Sorry for your loss, gb. I forget how great Corey's voice is in the Stone Sour format, so I changed the Slipknot spot in the metal deep dives with Corey Taylor to get around to both.

My steering wheel, dash, and pedals turn into a drum kit way too often while I am in the car. The Mrs can verify.... Just saying I can relate 1000% to this post.

#, Please # 29
Song: 634-5789 (Soulsville, USA)
Artist: Wilson Pickett
Year: 1966

(Youtube Version) 634-5789
(Live version ) BLUES BROTHERS BAND : 634-5789

4 Lines:
Oh. I'll be right there.
Just as soon as I can. (oh)
And if I'll be a little bit late now,
I hope that you'll understand (whoa-yah... allright)

Number Theory:
The full title (as shown above) is “634-5789 (Soulsville, USA)”, but most recordings shave off the part in parentheses. This song was written by Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper, the latter of which also played guitar on Pickett’s recording. The number was a reference to “Beechwood 4-5789” which was made famous by The Marvelettes. Though of course that would be “234-”.

This song had a small bump in popularity from appearing in the movie Blues Brothers 2000. The 1st live version above involved the cast and the “Blues Brothers Band”. I don’t know whether I should apologize for reminding you of that movie. Eh, let’s move on instead. There were also several covers of this song, the biggest of them from Tina Turner.

Significant Digits:
Off album#: 3
Track #: 3
Hit #1 in the U.S. Billboard R&B Singles Chart & #13 in the Hot 100

Artist crossover with other playlists: 2 (this is a running total, so 1 this time)

Next on the countdown, a song about time. And shoes.

29. Tems - "Replay" (2021) Single (Named) Ladies
Full name: Temilade Openiyi

I'm curious to see if any women (single named or otherwise) appear on @Don Quixote 's Afrobeat list. West African music has traditionally been dominated by men but that's changed a bit recently. Tems is a female singer from Lagos who has become one of the biggest stars in African music. She currently has 17 million monthly Spotify streams which is about the same number as Led Zeppelin.

"Replay" is a cut from her second EP. It's an example of a musical genre known as Alté, a fusion of Afrobeats, R&B, Dance Hall, Hip Hop and Reggae. I love the song's buoyant, sunny beats with the sax part bobbing and weaving its way through the tune. Tems uses her full vocal range from a smokey alto on the verse to soprano on the verse. Hers isn't a classically beautiful voice but it's very distinctive with a lot of soul.

No video for this one.

I tend to use the steering wheel for some dj scratching. If I’m rocking out, the seat belt shoulder strap works for air bass/guitar.

This popped in my youtube algorithm for a couple days for some reason. Finally clicked and listened. Then about five more times.

So does a ladle qualify as a mallet? Asking for a friend

I do like that one. My list is more geared to the 1970s era, and not as many women back then as there are now with the modern Afrobeats music.

Not many guesses after the last one, which isn't really surprising. I told you this would be difficult! Someone will get it eventually.

Selections:

31. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next - Manic Street Preachers

30. Hear The Drummer Get Wicked - Chad Jackson

29. Pick Up The Pieces - Average White Band

Incorrect guesses:

Songs that give advice

Bands That Have Never Been in My Kitchen

Songs by artists who have headlined Glastonbury

Songs featuring the Mellotron

Fear mongering

Song titles that could be part of geometry proofs

Bands who have a member whose first or last name is a James Bond reference

Bands with family members

Songs that reference a location in another country

Songs that have nine or more words in the title

Songs that mention famous streets

Bands who had a member mysteriously disappear, get declared dead, but no body has ever been found

Songs that reference footballguys user names

Songs without a guitar
Songs NOT produced by Todd Rundgren!

shuke – Saxytime

Magma (Spotify) - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Sax by band member Ambrose Kenny Smith.

I've barely scratched the surface in getting into their catalog, but this is one of a few songs with sax that have stood out. If you're not sure you like these guys, just listen to the next song of theirs. Style is all over the place.

It's the second, and not the last, selection from them in the countdown. :)

Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

Disco - Surf Curse

If you watched White Lotus you might recognize it. That's where I first heard it and thought it worked on my playlist. Not this MADs playlist but the playlist from which I harvested this playlist. Surf Curse is just a couple dudes from Indiana, a drummer and a guitar player. Both sing. They make a stripped down surf pop-ish shoegaze sound that resonated on Tik Tok and went viral-ish a few years before Disco became their "hit".

This was also considered for Genre Come To Life (my playlist). I especially like the drum rolls at about 1:50. The song has a strong ending.

KarmaPolice –Mind Idea - Jeremy Enigk - wow, this or something by them will be appearing on my list soon

Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary is an emo masterpiece. It's such the epitome of emo that South Park has an episode where a goth that catches his (kid? friend?) listening to Sunny Day Real Estate starts grilling her about if she's "emo." It was quite funny.

Anyway, I like the album. I have the album on vinyl, and I only buy stuff I really like in that format. So I had to put it on just now. I'll never forget watching it on MTV right when it came out and being blown away. It sounded so different than what was coming out of the Sub Pop scene back then.

DrIanMalcolm – Songs about New York

Leaving New York - R.E.M.

So...like a bunch of the songs on the New York list, this one is about loneliness. It's a recurrent theme and hard to avoid. It also comes near the end of REM's long and illustrious career, and so it has another reason for a touch of the melancholy. However...I'm gonna say "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is better, even if the song isn't all that Chicago-y. So the Windy City now leads, 2-1. (You know I'm gonna find a way to make this a 16-15 final score).

On the NY scale:

Artist connection to New York (1-5 scale): 1. REM is from Georgia, and while Michael Stipe is an ornery *******, the band has little connection to New York.
Song connection to New York (1-10 scale): 3. The song mentions New York and it's wistful, but that doesn't count for much.

So that's a 4, lowest on the NY scale so far.

Eephus – Single (Named) Ladies

Replay – Tems
KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Mind Idea - Jeremy Enigk
Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Heaven (Spotify) - Ebo Taylor (Ghana)

Summer Madness – Kool & the Gang
titusbramble – Grand Theft Auto, specifically the 3D era

Rockit - Herbie Hancock (VC - Wildstyle). ♥️
shuke – Saxytime

Magma (Spotify) - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Ilov80s - One song from each of the 31 best albums of 1984

Speed Your Love to Me - Simple Minds
landrys hat - favorite Side 2 Track 1s from my record collection

Changes, Pts. 1 & 2 - Neal Francis - Changes (2019)
MrsKarmaPolice – Animal Kingdom

Bulls On Parade - Rage Against the Machine :headbang:
Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

Disco - Surf Curse

These were all my favorites from the 29’s 1 yeah there were lots. All were new to me, except for Rockit and Bulls on Parade, two of my favorite pump me up songs. Lots of other great stuff too. Awesome playlist.

Hey @shuke (or anyone else), I’ve liked every song people have picked for King Gizzard in this and other drafts. What’s a good album or two for a new listener to jump into for them?

Not much happening on the MADs adjacent new album release front this Friday but still better than a month ago.

Spoken word version of Jerry Cantrell's solo album from last year

I'm listening to the new record from Swedish Garage Rock true believers The Hellacopters who made my Global 31 list

New albums from Son Kil Moon and Bonny Prince Billy but those seem to come out every few months. There's also an upcoming King Gizzard acoustic record because of course there is.

@rockaction Madvillain Demos

Another advance single from Manic Street Preachers' new album (out in two weeks). Also new recordings from a Single (Name) Lady to be revealed in the round of 16.

New stuff from The Weeknd, Cymande, Kim Wilde  and Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet.

Kim Wilde
Why that expression?
Kim Wilde is one of the most successful female artists of all time on the British charts
8 top 10 hits, 14 top 20 hits, 17 top 30 hits and 25 top 50 hits

It's been seven years since her last.

King Gizzard has released 19 studio albums during that time. Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek have put out 14 by my count.

We Yanks haven't heard much from her since the '80s.
She also did gardening shows in the UK
Starting in 1998, while still active in music, she has branched into an alternative career as a landscape gardener, which has included presenting gardening shows on the BBC and Channel 4.
In 2005, she won a Gold award for her courtyard garden at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show.
But yeah, way bigger in the UK and Europe.

I’ve been keeping up listening, but haven’t posted. So far I’ve liked more songs than in the artist countdowns and really like the variety. I’ve added many to my Spotify liked songs list, the following are songs I either forgot about or didn’t know and really liked.
