Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (7 Viewers)

17.

Who? – J. Mascis

What? – Dinosaur Jr.

Where? – Maxwell’s, Stone Pony

When? – 1993, 2024

Why? – I’ve seen J. Mascis solo acoustic and with his band Dinosaur Jr. Mascis plays with a sonic fury electric that just fills the room with soaring guitar. The dude is kind of a jerk but is one of the best to come out to the fuzzy guitar sound era of the 90s.

Next up - one of the more fun songs, with Marvel’s most iconic character

Colin James has been around since 1988 and still producing new music regularly. He tours constantly around Canada and abroad. I’m not sure how much, or even if he is known in the USA. Older people, like me, may know him from some of his original hits:

Five Long Years
Voodoo Thing
Why'd You Lie
Just Came Back
Something Good
Cadillac Baby

As I’ve posted before he has a cover of Into The Mystic which I love

Into The Mystic

Anyway, he’s got a lot of great songs but I wanted to share a hidden gem. I don’t usually go for instrumentals but Speechless is one. Great song when you just want to sit back, close your eyes and dream. The sound of his guitar is perfection. I hope somebody likes it.

A very talented and underrated artist.

Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

What a Pleasure - Beach Fossils

Like a few of my bands this is mostly a one guy project that turned into something bigger. Dustin Payseur, a young guitar player and tech nerd, moved from one of the Carolinas to Brooklyn determined to get into the indie music scene when he was 20. A decent guitar player he was fascinated with digital audio workstations making him sound like a great guitar player. From his bedroom, and playing all the instruments into his daw, then digitally fixing up his poor playing, he released Beach Fossils. Daydream and Youth became underground hits and he was off to the races. If you haven't noticed I'm pretty fascinated by this diy process. Some call it diy pop or bedroom pop.

In 2011 he released What a Pleasure and I chose the title track. Another discovery that came from a suggestion: "If you like Jesus and Mary Chain, you might like Beach Fossils." It's a soundscape that appeals to me, especially when it goes a little lo-fi. I remember in the 70s being frustrated struggling to understand vocals. Well, 50 years later it doesn't bother me at all because I'm old and grumpy and don't care what they're singing about. I just care if I like the way it sounds. I like shoegaze and dream pop washed out vocals and all. What a Pleasure is a pleasure.

Beach Fossils has become pretty influential on the indy scene. Dustin has himself a talented touring band. The early lo-fi stuff has evolved into something much more involved but still pretty easily recognizable to his original efforts. Is it surfy? How'd he clean up his poor playing? Lots of reverb.

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

One – Metallica

I had a lady friend back in the Vegas days who just despised metal music. Hate hated on it. I played this for her without any introduction. 5 minutes in, I'm headbanging away, and she shut it off. I thought, oops that was unkind of me to do to her. Nope. She was crying and said she couldn't take anymore but it was the most incredible song she ever heard.

17. You Don't Have to Say You Love Me - Dusty Springfield

What is wrong with you people? You're all so cynical. You don't smile. You smirk. - Meagan Draper, season 5, episode 1 (part 2), A Little Kiss

This selection comes from the same episode as the previous one, and the juxtaposition in tones between them reflects the change in tone over the halves of this two-part episode, as well as in Meagan herself, and is very contemporary to the date of the episode; the song was released in March of 1966, and the events of A Little Kiss supposedly take place Memorial Day Weekend 1966.

Dusty's version is a remake in English of an award-winning Italian song from 1965. She was in the audience of the music festival in Italy where it won first place and supposedly was moved to tears by it even though she didn't understand the lyrics. Despite her interest in recording her own version, a translation of the lyrics was never acquired. A friend (Vicki Wickham, a producer for the TV show Ready Steady Go!) and her friend (Simon Napier-Bell. manager of The Yardbirds), neither of whom had any experience writing songs, took on the task. Ultimately, they came up with lyrics that simply matched the melody. Napier-Bell reportedly described the endeavor thusly:

"We went back to [Wickham]'s flat and started working on it. We wanted to go to a trendy disco so we had about an hour to write it. We wrote the chorus and then we wrote the verse in a taxi to wherever we were going."

Given the effort invested, it must be more a testament to the tune itself that it reached #1 on the British charts and #4 in the US, making it the most successful song of her career and netted silver record status in the United Kingdom; Elvis Presley's cover in 1970 reach gold record status.

Either I haven't yet gotten the significance of its use in this episode, or I do get it and just don't want to admit it to myself.

A newly remastered box set of David Lee Roth's Warners stuff. The band he put together for Eat 'Em & Smile was phenomenal.
Pretty sure Gigilo is my favorite all time favoritest music video
Just a Gigolo was a near miss from my superhero list.
Not #1 ??!! :penalty:
Can I interest you in a different superhero by Dave (and the boys)?

kupcho1 – rain

Rain On The Scarecrow - John Mellencamp
I think this is where John dropped the Cougar. I think this also coincides with Farm Aid (if memory serves). It certainly fits right in; just check out the lyrics.

The crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loans
Couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it's just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol' hoss sure don't make it right
But if you want me to I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight

#17: SCREAMING FEMALES - ZOO OF DEATH

Full disclosure - I would have them higher, but her voice holds me back from repeat listens. I still listen a bit, and have seen them pop up in a couple drafts, so here they are. I do love the blend of metal/punk in the music and they sometimes switch it up mid-song which also scores well with me. That is why I landed on this one, I love the change of pace around the 2:20 mark as it builds back up again.

Recommended listening: My favorite overall album is their 2023 output Desire Pathway. The album closer Titan is a stand out for me, and was the other song I was thinking about doing for this. Her voice is a little smoother on this one. That seems to be the case as you go backwards from there- they live up to their name as you go farther back. My preference in albums also follows that path. I included Black Moon from their 2018 album, and a couple other old ones in Ripe and Foul Mouth so anybody who liked Zoo of Death can listen to sample of what their sound is.

Next: A band I have been trying to remember the name of for about 10 years now. Riddle finally solved this winter!!

World’s Worst Superheroes #17

Ice Cream Man

Artist - Van Halen (1976)

Strengths - has his own wheels and his own theme music; tight with the kids on the street; all his flavors are guaranteed to satisfy

Weaknesses - is known to wilt when the heat is on; can be irritating to the lactose intolerant; rarely stops for those in need

There Goes My Hero

Situation
- You’re robbing another bank. Yes, you need to find another line of work. Your last driver had a sweet car, but got busted for violating a protective order by driving within 500 feet of a school zone. You’re waiting for your new getaway driver before the bank manager sets off the alarm.

You: “Where is that new driver? He said his ride was sweet. I need a quick and quiet getaway before anyone notices.”

Off in the distance, you start to hear the high-pitched jingling of something that sounds like a demented version of Pop Goes the Weasel. It gets louder and louder as a van with an extremely conspicuous huge cone on its roof slowly approaches. A crowd of hungry and exhausted children follows furiously behind. The van pulls up and its horn loudly blares La Cucaracha for all to hear.

Ice Cream Man: [gruff looking, with beautiful curls in his hair and a name tag that says Big Worm on it]. “Your chariot awaits!”

You: [looking suspiciously at the van and driver]. “What have you got here? How are we supposed to get away in this thing?”

ICM: [wipes sweat from brow]. “Well, I got bim bam banana pops, dixie cups; all flavors and push ups, too. Bomb pops, cool-a-coos, fudgecicles, choco taco. . . “. [continues rambling off tasty frozen treats for 10 more minutes]

You: [holding head]. “Awww, that’s too much ice cream too fast! BRAIN FREEZE!!!”

ICM: [visibly dripping with perspiration, looks nervously in the rearview mirror at the approaching mob of kids] “Hurry up man! We gotta go!”

You: [Turns to pick up duffel bags filled with cash.]. “OK!”

You hear the annoying music start back up and to your horror you see the Ice Cream Man start to drive away. You join the mob of desperate children chasing the van as it slowly drives away with the Ice Cream Man maliciously laughing for all to hear.

MrsKarmaPolice – Animal Kingdom

Moth's Wings - Passion Pit
My sisters and I went to 10th anniversary tour of Manners and did a meet and greet with Michael Angelakos. He's a fascinating guy. He's been very open about his struggles with bipolar disorder and suicidal ideation.
This is stripped down version of Moth's Wings that I also like.

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

One – Metallica
Summary: Basically the kings of metal. Metallica has won ten Grammy Awards from 26 nominations and had six consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. They rank as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold more than 125 million albums worldwide. Metallica is the third-best-selling music artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

Times Seen Live in Concert: 4 = 1989x2, 1992 (with Guns N’ Roses), 1994 (with Danzig and Suicidal Tendencies)

Personal Connection: My introduction to Metallica was through …And Justice For All, the first cassette I wore the print off of. This was the album of choice that I would listen to almost every night while falling asleep. I quickly snapped up the previous three albums, loving each one for a different reason. I also believe they were one of the first concert t-shirts I ever owned. For this countdown I would have chosen something from Master of Puppets, but it came out in 1986 so I went with the chalk pick of One, a song whose music video is emblazoned in my memory forever.

Other songs to consider: Too many to choose from but to me, Battery and Fade to Black are essential listening.

Songs in D Minor

17 - Real Life - Send Me an Angel

Lyric - If a girl walks in and carves her name in my heart
I'll turn and run away
Everyday we've all been led astray
It's hard to be lucky in love

Source - https://musicstax.com/track/send-me-an-angel-1983-remix-rerecorded-remastered/1VnzvKqcZQePiiygYhCpbA
https://www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/view/real-life/send-me-an-angel

Sadness Quotient - 3/11 - Lyrics are a bit down, but not behind the banging synths

Comment - An enduring synth pop anthem from Melbourne Australia where they ran from with the locals screaming that they wanted GEETARs. This song hit the US Top 30 twice. Reaching #29 in 1984 and #26 in 1989. Still sounds great now. Debut album is fantastic.

Next Up - Lots of depressing lyrics from these guys, but not on one of their rare trips to D Minor.

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Ja Funmi (Spotify) - King Sunny Ade (Nigeria)

This one is from King Sunny Ade’s album, Juju Music. Juju is a form of popular music in Nigeria that is percussion driven, led by the talking drum. Juju Music was King Sunny Ade’s first album after he signed with Island Records, who signed him in part to make up for the death of Bob Marley, which left a gap in the international market. Island Records apparently first heard of him through Robert Palmer (yes, that Robert Palmer of Addicted to Love fame), who knew King Sunny Ade’s music from his time growing up in Malta. Ja Funmi translates from Yoruba to “Fight for Me.”

Pitchfork has a pretty good review of the Juju Music album if interested in reading a bit more about it and King Sunny Ade.

Batman

17 - The Offspring - Smash it Up

Relevant Lyric - Smash it up
And you can stick a frothy lager
Smash it up
Up the **** with your lesson

Batman Vibe Score - 3/10 - The Batman movies of the 80s and 90s missed a trick that Christopher Nolan found. Too much gloss and glamour and assembling songs that did nothing to help the cause

Where to Find - Batman Forever Soundtrack

Quick Hit Comment - While this is a respectable cover, it sort of sums up the Batman soundtracks. Just a collection of songs rather than a united Batman theme behind them.

Next Up - Lets continue the punk/emo theme

I mentioned last time that I would guess Batman’s guess in the Batman versus World’s Worst Superhero AI debate. Batman’s guess was struggle, rebellion, and survival. I’ve pasted the debate (which entertained me), but if you are over the AI stuff, feel free to scroll on by.

**Batman vs. The World’s Worst Superhero: The Great Song Debate**

**Setting:** A dark Gotham rooftop. Batman stands with his arms crossed, staring intensely at The World’s Worst Superhero, who is wearing a mismatched costume, a cape that's way too long, and a mask made out of an old sock. The Bat-Signal shines in the distance.

---

#### **Batman:**

These songs tell a story of struggle, rebellion, and survival. *If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next* warns against complacency in the face of oppression. *By The Time I Get To Arizona* speaks of the fight against injustice. Even *Living On My Own* highlights the loneliness of those who carry the burden of responsibility. They’re all about standing against the darkness.

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

Ohhh, that’s one way to look at it, sure. But I think they’re mostly about… dancing. Yeah. If you look at *Better Off Alone*, *Love Is The Drug*, and *Sharp Dressed Man*, it’s all just people grooving through life, looking cool, and making questionable romantic choices. That’s my kind of theme.

#### **Batman:**

You’re missing the point. *Virtual Insanity* is about a world spiraling out of control. *Dark Therapy* is about struggling with inner demons. These songs reflect the chaos and despair of modern existence. They remind us why we fight.

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

Or… hear me out… they remind us why we **party**! Have you actually listened to *Another Chance*? It’s about regretting a lost love, sure, but it’s also got that sweet beat. If it makes people wanna dance, is it really **that** deep?

#### **Batman:**

You think the message of these songs is just about **dancing**?

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

Look, Bats, not all of us are brooding in caves. Some of us listen to *Pick Up The Pieces* and think, "Hey, maybe I should pick up some **moves**."

#### **Batman:**

That kind of thinking is dangerous.

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

So is wearing a cape while fighting crime, but here we are.

#### **Batman:**

I work in the shadows to protect Gotham. These songs show the consequences of a world without order. If people don’t stand up, don’t fight back, everything falls into chaos.

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

Nah, buddy, *you* see chaos everywhere because you never take a break. These songs are about **living life**, not just fighting through it. *Goddess On A Hiway*? That’s just about cruising down the road, feeling free. Try it sometime. Maybe in the Batmobile.

#### **Batman:**

I don’t have time to cruise.

#### **The World’s Worst Superhero:**

And that, my dark and moody friend, is **why you don’t get the theme of these songs**.

*(The wind howls. Batman stares into the distance, contemplating if his greatest enemy might actually be… relaxation.)*

El Floppo – Mallet Rock

Satellite - Elvis Costello

#18.. this is one of the first of my tunes (other than that Zappa tune) where mallet instruments are really featured- and not just one. I'm hearing Glock, Vibes, Marimba... at least.. and all playing together for melody and support.

always felt like it had a lullaby feel to it- glock and vibes can have that bell-like choral, sing-songy tone and use. Really curious exactly which figures and tricks Elvis borrowed...

"I was speaking to Burt Bacharach the other day! Someone had asked us to write a song together. He was in the studio next door when we did "Satellite" (from Spike), which was a kind of homage to the Bacharach & David sound. he came in with his cigarette and listened and kept smiling when he heard a little figure or trick that was one of his. I love Bacharach's knack of being very light in a Latin way, like Nascimento or Gilberto, and yet tough."

The Chameleons' debut album Script of the Bridge from 1983 is 60 minutes of post-punk perfection. Criminally underrated band that influenced groups as diverse as Swervedriver, The Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, and Interpol. If you like Second Skin, check out their debut single In Shreds and Swamp Thing from their final "pre-reunion" record.

#17...

Always been a big Ty fan. when "Love Rudiments" came out in '24, I was excited to jump into some of his usual, but new and exploratory fuzzy garage/pscyh. at first few listens, it was a big no for me. no vocals. no guitars?! and I kinda put it aside until I settled on this theme when I've dived back in.

ok, if Elvis incorporated mallet instruments in a big way, Ty went all-in. The entire album is percussion only. period. Drums. Vibes. Xylophone. Marimba. Glock. Timpani. And a bunch of other **** mixed in for good measure. Nothing else but percussion.

This is what my son's percussion ensemble at Juilliard would play if they were cooler. this is that type of stuff I get to listen to there a bit too much... but bless Ty for going for it.

Juilliard commissioned Stuart Copeland to write a piece for their upcoming spring percussion ensemble show, which will likely draw 10x the usual amount of people which is typically just parents and occasional friends. And I'm guessing it will sound a lot like Ty's album. At least I hope so.

just want to say that I've always loved the chameleons (chameleons UK). felt like they married a bunch of different sounds in a distinct way that I still dig.

GTA #17 - Unaesta - La Vida Es Una Lenteja (Radio Espantoso, VC)

Radio Espantoso is hosted by Pepe, and plays an interesting mix of jazz, mambo, salsa and funk, is voiced entirely in Spanish, and probably has the oldest selections of tracks in Vice City, with a lot of the playlist dating back as far as the 1950's. Most of the playlist is licensed material, but there are a couple of tracks of original material written for the game, this track being one of them - Craig Conner being the real life artist behind this one, as well as the #25 track and at least one more that'll be coming up fairly shortly. The lyrics to this one are pretty nonsensical, but who cares, this one has happy vibes

I liked this song a lot. I’ll have to check them out more.

Criminally underrated band that influenced groups as diverse as Swervedriver, The Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, and Interpol. If you like Second Skin, check out their debut single In Shreds and Swamp Thing from their final "pre-reunion" record.
I really liked this song too.

17. "R.A.P. Music" - Killer Mike

Before Run The Jewels, El-P (El Producto) and Killer Mike (Mike Render) put out a beast of an album with only Killer Mike rapping. This one is Michael's declaration of his secular religion—his love of rap music.

This is jazz, this is funk, this is soul, this is gospel.
This is sanctified sex; this is player Pentecostal
This is church; front pew, amen, pulpit
What my people need is the opposite of ********
I was going to ask if El-P was involved since it totally sounded like RTJ. This was great.

I think it's the best track on the album. Most people like "Reagan" and a few others, but this one sticks with me as unadulterated joy about the art form he's partaking in. Glad you liked it!

eta* It's also said El-P and Mike cemented their friendship and working relationship with this album because El-P was able to bring his futuristic tendencies to Atlanta Trap and provide a synthesis that blew Killer Mike away. That and their contract from Adult Swim helped. So yeah, your inclination that this was El-P was totally correct.

I was pretty confident that for all the artists called out in this song that The Beatles wouldn’t be one of them (for @Raging weasel ).

"Dead Man's Party" is a song by American band Oingo Boingo, released as the third single from their album of the same name.

The song was released on a 12" single in conjunction with another song from the album, "Stay," with the cover art touting it as the single's a-side, while the catalog number and some discographies consider it the single's b-side. An edited version of "Dead Man's Party" was featured in a promotional music video and was issued in 1986 as the b-side of the 7" single "Just Another Day", also culled from the Dead Man's Party album.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Man's_Party_(song)#cite_note-3"><span>[</span>3<span>]</span></a>

The lyric, "I hear the chauffeur coming to my door/Says there's room for maybe just one more," is a reference to "The Bus-Conductor," a short story by E. F. Benson about a hearse driver, first published in The Pall Mall Magazine in 1906. The story has been adapted several times and spawned an urban legend, with each version using the catchphrase, "Room for one more."

It is perhaps best known for its appearance in the 1986 film Back to School, where the band performed it at a party.

Danny Elfman performed the song as the final encore of his Nightmare Before Christmas concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and at Banc of California Stadium in 2021, alongside his former Oingo Boingo guitarist and arranger Steve Bartek.

Beavis and Butt-head sold me on this song.

It was written before the Farm Aid concept (which arose from Bob Dylan's remarks at Live Aid). The Scarecrow album was released the same month as Live Aid, and the first Farm Aid was two months later, at which Mellencamp performed this song.
