Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (5 Viewers)

Yeah my list really should have been my favorite 31 albums of 1984. That is really what I am doing. I made 3 omissions that I think in a totally objective list would need to be on there but it does make room for some lessrs know albums which is better IMO. Nobody here is going to listen to a song off Born in the USA and go "oh wow I wonder what the deal with this Bruce Springsteen guy is".

There was a countdown song a couple of days ago that started off in on the outskirts of Springsteen song and ended up in downtown Mellencamp. I think it was some of @falguy 's friends from north of the border.

I've been getting increasingly sick for a few days and feel like death today. Fired up the #15s and was thinking, "Who is this trying to sound like Janis Joplin?" Of course, it was Janis Joplin. I'd forgotten despite being the person to post the list and having read Pip's write-up. My brain is broken.

What do people think of me not including Born in the USA for my best of 84?

If it’s personal taste than no issue with it. It was a huge album that year though. It’s a little overproduced (like most 80s albums) but there’s some well written songs on there.

They're not gonna listen to Purple Rain and say that about Prince, either.

New-to-me songs from #18 that caught my ear, as I finally begin my research for a fantasy baseball draft that's 22 days away.

MrsKarmaPolice – Animal Kingdom

I will be the 47th person in this thread to declare "The Urn" a favorite.
"Butterflies and Hurricanes" sounds like '90s Radiohead.

Wait a day and it might be you who sounds like Janis Joplin. I guess better that than Tom Waits.

I hope you feel better soon.

And people don't read my posts even when they read my posts.

Round 15 - Deception - The Crüxshadows

Never heard of Dark Wave, but here it is. They are from Florida.
Was so excited to hear this! The Cruxshadows were huge in the mid-90s Florida goth/industrial scene - from Tallahassee (boooo!) but made there way through Gainesville a couple of times and played our little club. Their big hit at the time was Marilyn, My Bitterness, which even got spun up in the Philly clubs after I left the sunshine state. The original version was from 1996 but Spotify only has the redub.

What do people think of me not including Born in the USA for my best of 84?

I could see it be used or not used. I do dig the songs I'm Going Down and Downbound Train from the album.
 personally I’d have included glory days or my hometown but there’s so much Boss out there and you chose a less known but good song.
Edit - oops. That wasn’t you (wrong year too). I don’t feel like you were really true to the category if you left Bruce out entirely but “best” is obviously subjective.

Yeah but Purple Rain is a great album that I love. Born in the USA is a pretty good album that I think is ok.

I like Bruce a lot which is maybe why I am harsher on Born.

Biggest in terms of hits and biggest in terms of shine but Born to Run is bigger in the ways I like more.

Wow, a bit over halfway through after hitting the #15s. Time flees. Speaking of which, time to get this out before the next round's posted.

Known Numbers:
I Feel Love - Donna Summer
I Would Die 4 U - Prince
Gone Daddy Gone - Violent Femmes
All 4 Love - Color Me Badd
Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z & Alicia Keys

Total Surprises:
Hey Heron - Rosali
Nowhere Girl - B-Movie
Something to Live For - Barney Bentall & The Legendary Hearts
Avenue of Hope - I Am Kloot
Sleeps With Butterflies - Tori Amos

Go Figure:

Back to back-to-back! This pair is The Cruxshadows’ “Deception” (which I think was my favorite new song of this round) followed by “Summerland” from King’s X (which I’ve heard, but it’s been a bit)

What do people think of me not including Born in the USA for my best of 84?

Not a top 5 Springsteen album, maybe not even top 10. The only songs in my regular rotation are Hometown and the acoustic version of No Surrender.
If the songs on BItUSA were recorded in the 70s, I think the album would be a lot better.

The 80s obviously had a lot of great music but artists like Bruce, the Stones, Dylan, and Petty who relied on a certain grittiness had some really bad sounding albums when they tried to adjust to the 80s production trends.

For some artists like Bowie, the Kinks and McCartney the transition worked very well for the most part.

Fool in the Rain - Led Zeppelin
Hey, I got a playlist title! Thanks @KarmaPolice

Fool in the Rain is off Led Zeppelin's 8th (and final studio) album, In Through the Out Door. This album was not received well by critics and (most) fans. 1979 was prime punk, and the fact that Led Zeppelin was part of the old guard, likely played a role in the reception. Plus, there's keyboards galore; this isn't a sound they're associated with.

But, it's a good rain song, and that's what matters.

And I'll run in the rain till I'm breathless
When I'm breathless I'll run 'til I drop, hey!
And the thoughts of a fool's kind of careless
I'm just a fool waiting on the wrong block, oh yeah

I'm going to tell you what the hint was from two days ago. In my hint-to-the-hint, I bolded those that were closest to the theme. The above were those that I thought would most give away what the hint was.

The first seems to have no connection to any of the others, so it was one to look at particularly carefully. The second grouping showed that the plot to Thelma and Louise was closer than "tying into" the movie.

Pip was on the right track but not quite there. The hint is: the order matters.

Who?
– Derek Trucks

What? – w/ Eric Clapton, Tedeschi Trucks Band

Where? – Madison Square Garden, Beacon Theater

When? – 2011, 2017

Why? - Trucks is one of the best young blues players out there and more than held his own sharing a stage with Eric Clapton. The TTB, and band he formed with his wife, Susan Tedeschi is one of the best live bands out there – unfortunately their ticket prices reflect that.

I have to be close to the longest song title, right? I have another later that is even longer, I think.

Artist connection to Chicago (1-5 scale): 5 - Very much a Chicago punk band, though not born here. Brendan Kelly might be better known as the man behind the Twitter account, "Nihilist Arby's."

Song connection to Chicago (1-10 scale): 5 - Hard to score this one. On the one hand, it's a 10, because it perfectly describes being at one of thousands of dive bars on a miserable winter day in the city. On the other hand, it doesn't mention anything specifically Chicago. I went in the middle but am regretting not putting it higher on the scale.

Total: 10

Still pretty awful. I did get sleep last night, after some coughing bouts that were monumentally bad. I took so many different drugs to try to combat it, which probably knocked me out. Feel like I could go back to bed right now, though. Also having chills again, but no fever yet. Thanks for asking.

In Through The Out Door is a better LP than its rep. It set Zep up well to go into the 1980s, sort of how The Who did. Circumstances dictated a different outcome, but John Paul Jones is the hero of this record.

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue

Summary: The first hair metal band on the list (I don’t really consider GNR in that genre). Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band formed in Hollywood, California, in 1981. The band has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and have achieved seven platinum or multi-platinum certifications.

Times Seen Live in Concert: 2 = 1990, 2010 (with Ozzy)

Personal Connection: 1983’s Shout at the Devil was an early cassette purchase, probably due to the cover and them being in the same family as Twisted Sister. I’m not sure why I never really got into their debut album, but I loved 1987’s Girls, Girls, Girls and 1989’s Dr. Feelgood. With my chosen time range, I had to go with something from the latter and chose Kickstart My Heart as it is my go-to Crue track whenever I need a pick me up.

Other songs to consider: Any and all from Jwb’s round 3 MAD31’s playlist

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow

Valhalla, I am coming
On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore
Ah-ah, ah!
Ah-ah, ah!
We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
How soft your fields so green
Can whisper tales of gore
Of how we calmed the tides of war
We are your overlords
On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing

"Don't You (Forget About Me)" is a song by the Scottish rock band Simple Minds, released as a single in 1985. It was written and composed by the record producer Keith Forsey and the guitarist Steve Schiff for the film The Breakfast Club (1985). Simple Minds initially declined to record it, preferring to record their own material, but accepted after several other acts also declined.

"Don't You (Forget About Me)" became a breakout hit for Simple Minds, an iconic song and a 1980s anthem. The single reached No. 1 in the United States and Canada, becoming Simple Minds' biggest hit in the United States. It also reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and reached the top ten in charts around the world.

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Musicawi Silt (Spotify) - Hailu Mercia & The Walias (Ethiopia)
I accidentally wrote it as Mercia instead of Mergia. Ah well.

This is the first and only trip to Ethiopia on my list. Hailu Mergia was influenced by the sounds of the likes of Booker T. and the MG’s (in the article below, he refers to Green Onions as having the world’s best bassline - and he’s not wrong). He kind of merged those sounds with the sounds of Ethiopian jazz. His band played at a hotel in Addis Ababa with a lot of international travelers, so they developed some sounds for the variety of customers that would be there.

He left Ethiopia in the early 1980s when the famine hit. At that time, he moved to Washington, DC, joining the large Ethiopian population in the DC area (DC is a good place for Ethiopian food, given the large population in this area). He took up a job as a taxi driver, driving for the Washington Flyer to Dulles Airport. For all that I know, he has been my cab driver at some point and I did not even know it.

Songs that are the narrative arc of a divorce

This is your life, Krista
Detailing Britney Spears’ descent into madness
The plot to Thelma and Louise

The Ballad of @krista4 and OH
Songs about a major change in someone's life
All of these songs tie into the movie Thelma and Louise

The highlighted suggest, well, a story. Perhaps "the plot" to some media (book, movie, TV show, etc). "narrative", 'detailing", "stages" all tend to support that. "This is your life" is a small push towards this involving a real person, but I'm not locked onto that. I have to wonder if the order makes more sense from 1 to 31, but going either direction, I haven't seen it, and might not until it's obvious (and/or discovered). It seems like the titles hold the weight here. Though I'm on fence as to how much it matters that it's Bad Religion's "You" instead of, say, Candlebox's.

But that's just me overthinking it, while I actually have time to ponder it.
