Fool in the Rain is off Led Zeppelin's 8th (and final studio) album, In Through the Out Door. This album was not received well by critics and (most) fans. 1979 was prime punk, and the fact that Led Zeppelin was part of the old guard, likely played a role in the reception. Plus, there's keyboards galore; this isn't a sound they're associated with.

But, it's a good rain song, and that's what matters.

"Never Say Never" is a 1982 song by the new wave band Romeo Void. One of their best-known songs, "Never Say Never" was a favorite on early MTV, featuring a black-and-white music video that spoofs Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. The song is driven by a throbbing, funky bassline and punctuated by jagged guitar and saxophone, incorporating post-punk influences. The song reached #17 on the Billboard Dance / Disco chart chart on the 27th of March, 1982.

I've mentioned this before but it was in the Genrepalooza thread that nobody but the crazies frequented.

We own a couple of paintings by Romeo Void frontwoman Debora Iyall. A couple of our old friends Tina and Paul moved out of SF during the pandemic and were getting rid of stuff. Paul was married to Iyall during the late 80s and played bass on her debut solo album after the band broke up. He and Tina decided that they didn't need to keep a couple of small landscapes painted by his ex-wife so they contacted Mrs. Eephus because she's a big Romeo Void fan. Evidently she's not a big enough fan to hang them yet but never say never.

#13: PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI (PFM) - PHOTOS OF GHOSTS

Any MADer who likes a bit of Genesis or Yes might dig these guys, or any of the people who were following along to the 70s prog songs countdown since they showed up there as well. Photos of Ghosts is the English language version of Per Un Amico plus one song from their debut album. I will include the Italian version below for comparison if anybody is interested. This was yet another find as I was watching the stuff on Youtube and writing down ideas as I did research. A handful of the artists that showed up on the countdown came from one single source (we will meet them toward the end of the countdown). This is the last like that and the list was: Culpepper's Orchard and McCoy Tyner from the Last X outs, and Linda Perhacs, Scott Walker, and PFM from the main playlist.

Recommended Listening: So far, I have gotten through all the 70s stuff and liked all those albums. Per Un Amico is where I would start (I prefer the Italian version but listen to Photos of Ghosts if you prefer the other option. L'Isola Di Niente and Jet Lag were the other two that stuck out for albums. I've been listening to a couple live albums before moving on to the 80s and beyond in a true deep dive. They have a release as recent as 2021, so there is a lot to dig through here.

13. Why Can't We Live Together by Sade

Some superlatives I have for Diamond Life: favorite album of 84, favorite debut album ever, sexiest album ever recorded, most beautiful lead singer ever. How can Sade Adu be that stunning, have that gorgeous of a voice and be such a gifted songwriter? Even today at 64 she looks amazing. She was truly blessed by the gods. This is the neo soul, quiet storm album by which all are judged.

So I mentioned her wonderful songwriting but also how about her skill at making someone elses song her own? There is only one song from Diamond Life that Sade didn't write, the album closer and Timmy Thomas cover, Why Can't We Live Together. It's a slow burn and probably my favorite song here. It hypnotically pulls you in like a boat adrift on a clalm sea before Sade makes her first haunting plea at the 2:08 mark.

Strengths - knows how to do lots of cool things with rubber bands - extreme accuracy when shooting them across a room, that annoying thing when he smacks your leg with one, tying a bunch together to create a catapult from office supplies, he even won second place at the science fair for creating a rubber band-propelled boat made out of a milk carton; this dude is outta sight - everything he does seems to come out right!

Weaknesses - no, he’s not made of plastic like Mister Fantastic, Elastigirl, or Plastic Man - that would be pretty cool; tends to be very annoying and gets in trouble at school and work a lot

Playlist title achieved! Beforehand, I was wondering if The Nails or Springsteen would nab it. Or, perhaps, if KarmaPolice would wait for a specific song. Getting it here? Well, of course, that’s just sublime.

I plausibly don’t need to explain the number here. But let’s do it anyway. One container for alcohol are 40 ounce glass bottles. These are usually reserved for malt liquors. The traditional term for that required 5% alcohol and malted barley among the ingredients. Though more commonly it’s just any beer with high alcohol content, usually above 6%.

So is the song about drinking? Of course. That and using it as a temporary escape. Though I’ve also seen some suggest the narrator here just got out of jail, and it’s that he’s “not going back” to. Regardless, it’s a catchy, fairly upbeat song, and worth including (IMHO) for the chorus alone. I should also note that Sublime covered (Last 5 Out member) “54-46 Was my Number” on this album, if combined with “Ball and Chain”.

Single (Named) Lady #13 - Tamia - "You Put a Move on My Heart" (1995)
Full name: Tamia Marilyn Washington

Tamia was born in Windsor, Ontario and began her career there winning a YTV young artist award at the age of 18. That led to her performing at a benefit show for multiple sclerosis where she was discovered by Lionel Richie's ex-wife Brenda who became her manager. Richie was Tamia's connection to Quincy Jones who took her under his week and invited her to perform on his Q's Juke Joint album in 1995. Not many artists are lucky enough to have Quincy Jones produce their debut recording even if it did get released under his name.

"You Put a Move on My Heart" is a love ballad written by longtime Jones associate Rod Temperton. He originally wrote the song for Mica Paris who recorded it a couple of years earlier. Paris' version is steamier with a bluesy feel. Jones files down some of the rough edges with the lush atmospherics and close harmonies that he's famous for. The song is a diva's showcase and Tamia absolutely nails the vocal.

The video takes place in a recording studio. Tamia mimes her vocal booth while Quincy looks on from the producer's booth. It's all pretty straightforward except she dematerializes at three points of the song and reappears singing the same song in the same outfit but with a new hairstyle in a different setting.

I was able to see them on the Downward Spiral tour, and that still is a top concert that I went to. Trent is still an artist I love and gravitate to, but I lost a bit of interest as the Ghosts albums started coming out. I don't remember this part. The loudest 2 I can remember is a group I think is still coming up for Yambag, and surprisingly - Chrvches.

The Who is the loudest outdoor show I've ever heard, and the Psychedelic Furs is the loudest indoor show. This particular show The Furs played was at a small venue, and they were loud enough to wake the dead. I've seen them play there before, though, when they weren't that loud, but they always have it turned up. The last time I saw them was in 2023 when they toured with Squeeze. Their sax player, Mars Williams, was still alive when I saw them. I don't think they have brought in another sax player since Mars passed in late '23.

The Ship won't be found on a tourist map of LA studios, but it's where Zac Carper, an escapee from rehab in Hawaii, landed an engineering gig in the diy control room armed with a notebook of irreverent and painful song ideas. Elvis Kuehn, son of Greg Kuehn of Long Beach punkers T.S.O.L. and a college drop out, lied about that in order to obtain an internship at The Ship where he and Zac found plenty of late night studio downtime to experiment with the notebook. Zac once confessed alcohol was his biggest issue because it was the easiest drug to steal. With free booze (plenty of costly alternatives) and a free diy studio, Elvis recruited his brother Max a drummer, and Zac recruited Brandon Schwartzel (bass), who'd provided an LA refuge for the Hawaiian fugitive. In 2011 they released their debut EP, the aptly named DIYDUI.

Landing on Stereogum's Top 40 Best New Bands and peaking at #5 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, they soon found themselves gigging with successful punkers The Black Lips and The Hives. In a Pitchfork interview they claimed Blink 182 as a primary influence, which made me say, "Really?" They're more similar to Wavves who appeared earlier on my list, and even then they're grittier; skate punk with lo-fi surf slop perfect for a violent mosh experience. Fun when you're in the mood, if ever you're in the mood.

My song choice, No Waves, was written in what Carper calls his dark period doing diy rehab as an escapee.

Greetings from London! Sorry to have gone MIA but the missus suggested that I head to the UK a few days earlier than planned for the annual weekend of Hold Steady shows. She sweetly thought that getting a few solo days away from work madness would get my mind off of things, but of course, almost every non-service industry person over here who hears me speak 'murican starts asking me about the two people who shan't be named ,

Today, I wandered 11.5 miles in the almost 60-degree sunshine on a hunt for great street art. I also killed an hour in this artsy coffeeshop/bar/civic space that Courtney Love has repeatedly claimed to frequent just to get verification that she's truly as awful as Krista's friend says. Alas, Courtney didn''t show so I'll go on sticking my head in the sand, ignoring the first-hand experiences of others in the know, and believing that if we had met, Courtney would have been instantly charmed and taken me up on the spare ticket I have for Saturday night's THS show.

Anyway, I have no idea where I left off here and am too lazy to go back, so I'll just say The Whip's Muzzle #1 was the top selection in Q Magazine's "20 Songs We Love RIght Now" list from the August 2007 issue. Love at first listen for me - pure dance-punk bliss.

Between these and all the known-to-me favorites, this was probably my favorite playlist thus far.

Mascis's guitar playing often sounds like Neil's, but that's particularly the case on "I Don't Wanna Go There."
"What a Pleasure" sounds more like jangle-pop than surf to me, but whatever, it's good.
