Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (3 Viewers)

This too shall pass, KC. Somehow I’ve managed to miss this one, I like it.
You didn't - it's new. Just released earlier this year. I may have been motivated to countdown Kenny in this thing anyway, but this album ensured it. Cover-to-cover his best work ever imo.

Fever Dream- Iron and Wine
from Our Endless Numbered Days (2004)

I want your flowers like babies want God's love

Fever Dream is our first dive into Our Endless Numbered Days. This is in my opinion one of the best folk albums of all time and my personal favorite Iron & Wine project. The increased production immediately gives the album a cleaner, more professional feel, but thankfully this does not come at the cost of the intimacy that made the first album so special.

Fever dream is such a serene and beautiful song that it almost sounds like a lullaby. Beautiful vocals and lyrics and I love the guitar work on this one. Upon listening again... I may have under ranked it.

Another good batch of songs for me in this playlist. Added a few new saves for artists I had previously not mentioned.

MItski: Francis Forever
Slambovian Circus: Lost Highway. Enjoying most of these ones so far (y)
Moody Blues: Cities
Brian Setzer: That Mellow Sax. That was energetic!
Mazzy Star: Wasted
Kenny Chesney: Wasted (what are the odds, same title, back to back?). Figured I'd like many of his songs and happy to see I was right
The Cure: Friday I'm in Love. Yeah, I like it, sue me!
JJ Walker: David and Me. Many catchy tunes from this non-serial killer
The Doors: Break on Through ( I don't know that many Doors tunes. Surprised to have heard a few of their "bigger" hits already. )
Andrew Bird: Fiery Crash

My selection, Child's Garden was another new one to me. Apparently Myles Goodwin wrote this for his father. As I understand it they didn't always see eye-to-eye when he was young and this was an open apology to him.
Tomorrow's tune is my first one from my favorite April Wine album.

The Sweet song is X'd out on Spotify for us Americans again. :sadbanana:

Sweet

#26 - Lettres D’Amour
I ain't gonna lie, the exclusion of some of these Sweet songs on Spotify is disheartening.
It is so damn much work to click another link and listen to the song separately.
I am not sure what is going on.
I have VPN’d into the US and all the Sweet songs are visible.
@KarmaPolice can i pm you the remaining sweet songs to see which ones arent gonna show up?
As far as I can tell the Sweet arent blocked from US Spotify. It is more than likely a configuration issue through the Spotify system
@John Maddens Lunchbox - that is fine, shoot over the list and I can take a peek.

ETA: your link for the 25s was greyed out too. I will look if there is something that pops up on a search when I get the rest in.

Random thoughts after listening to the #26s:

Easy Lover kicks so much ***. I didn't realize the EWF connection. I think I've listened to this 10x in the last couple days.
I forget how good Good Girls is. I found the album pretty hit or miss so I seem to pass over this as I listen to other stuff of theirs.

In my mind, I have liked at least 2-3 songs from each artist on the list. I've called out most in my posts, but I don't think that is the case for artists, and for a dumb reason - I am having trouble keeping them apart in my hazy head. Tea Party and Slambovian don't really sound alike, but before this started I thought Slambovian would sound weirder than it does, and sometime I find the Tea Party song weirder so it doubly confuses me. What I am saying is I am liking them both, but this might be the reason I am not talking about them much. These 2 and the next 2 are ones I am really looking forward to listening to them in context when I go through the playlists by artist. Similar to the above reasons, I have even more trouble with Destroyer and Andrew Bird in my head. I blur them more because they are together on the playlist.

Well...since watering my sister's plants and flowers, I've either got poison ivy or chiggers, and I got stung by a bumble bee on my left thigh. The good news is Maisy has eaten her breakfast every day lately (although it takes her about 3 hours), and she has eaten about half her dinner the last 3 nights in a row (after about three hours). Three nights prior she was only eating a couple bites at dinner. This means she will be alive and in pretty good shape for when sister comes home Sunday. My sister is going to take her back to the vet for further evaluation. I'm at sister's now giving Maisy some time to eat. I don't feel like leaving and coming back tonight, so I'm hanging out. I found some vodka in the freezer, so I'm having a cocktail listening to music with the groove cats. I went to the eye doctor today, and my eyes were dilated for hours, which made it a good time to listen to the 26 playlist. Here are some beginning thoughts...

- "Cannot Find a Way" by Curtis Mayfield and "I Put A Spell On You" by Bryan Ferry have great grooves.
- "Lady's Choice" by Fanny does have an ABBA feel to it in parts of it.
- "Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure reminds me of when I lived in Florida. I think it's a cheerful, bouncy tune. I don't use the word cheerful much to describe a Cure song.
- "Fever Dream" by Iron and Wine is a beautiful song. There's a gentleness about it.
- I dig Andrew Bird's vocals in "Fiery Crash." I dig the song in general, and it is one of my favorites from this album.
- Oingo Boingo's "No One Lives Forever" is fun. I could work out to this tune.
- I love the classic 60s sound that is in "Cities" by the Moody Blues. I like the sound of their vocals, too.
- I'm another person who thought "Easy Lover" was a Phil Collins song. Love the falsetto part. Great 80s flashback.
- "We Were Beautiful" by Belle and Sebastian has a pedal steel and horns in it, so what's not to like?
- "Break On Through (To The Other Side) by The Doors is fun to dance to.

*Out of respect for those with short attention spans, I'm ending this post so it isn't so long. I'm continuing on in the next one.

26 Playlist continued...

- I really like "Child's Garden" by April Wine. The guitar is nice in it, and I like the whole song.
- The Brian Setzer Orchestra is wired for sound in "(Every time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone." 🎷 He sounds great live.
- I listened to The Sweet duet on YouTube and liked it a lot. I liked the Lollipop song from last playlist, too.
- I enjoyed "A Dangerous Woman Up to A Point" by Destroyer. It's odd and good. It's oddly good!
- I like the vocals and vibe of "Rain Won't Come" by Strand of Oaks.
- "Lying In The Hands of God" by DMB has a nice message. The music and vocals are good, too.
- "How Can You Love Me If Don't Even Like Me" by Blue October has a cool smoothness about it.
- "Francis Forever" by Mitski is good. I may like it best out of her "slower" songs so far, but they have all been good. My favorites have been when she rocks out.
- "Lost Highway" by the Circus band is chilly willy.
- STP's "Dead & Bloated" reminds me that Weiland can sound different from song to song. Nice semi-slow rocker
- "All Summer Long" by The Beach Boys sounds so innocent and pure after listening to STP.
- I dig this intro to "Drawing Down The Moon" by The Tea Party.
- I always love the atmosphere in Mazzy Star songs, and "Wasted" is no exception. The lead singer's voice and the music always go so well together.
- Great cover of "Stuck In The Middle With You" by Susanna Hoffs. Her voice sounds more stratchy in this song, which kinda goes well with the song. I don't use this laptop often, and it keeps wanting to call her Susanna Hoffa.
- I like the music break or whatever you call it in the middle of "Love Bites" by Judas Priest.
- "Summertime" by Kenny Chesney reminds me that I think my second oldest nephew may have seen him last summer. I've never known him to like country, except he liked John Denver when I played some specific songs of his songs for him and his cousins when he was younger. He listened to rap in high school. I think his college girlfriend likes country.
- CHVRCHES has bad girl language in "Good Girls."
- Dio's vocals stand out in "As Long As It's Not love." I've liked hearing all these different sides of him.
- I listened to what I think is some of Shellac's "The Futurist Mov 1 & 2." To me it started out sounding like someone messing with an AM station on a transistor radio, trying to tune it in, and then a movement of music starts, and then more. It was cool and interesting listening to it and learning the history behind the song from OH.

I'm starting on Annie Lennox. So far, so good.
I'm really looking forward to this. She has an amazing voice and I've never listened much
I'm doing the lot. The early Tourists stuff, the Eurythmics, and the solo albums. And there's a bunch other one-offs as well. I have no idea how to prune this to 31 songs. I love every song on a few of her albums. The bracket is going to be brutal.

Don’t Ask Me Why, but I will be right by your side as you countdown. Would I Lie to You?
When she sings there must be an angel playing with my heart. I hope to not be a Thorn in Your side when tomorrow comes and you run down the list.
It’s shame that I need a Man, a Missionary Man. Would that be a Sex Crime?
Why? Well put a little love in your heart and dont be so cold and precious.
Gotta run, no more I love yous. Feels like Im Walking on broken glass around here.

On vacation through next Monday and will do the next handful of writeups early next week. Will try to listen and chime in as I can.
Are you at Sanibel Island? Wherever you are, have a great vacation. 🌴🌞
Thanks! My wife and I are in Scotland until early next week. We go to Sanibel around Christmas time.
Cool, what parts of Scotland and how wild are those little Pict bastards?
Summer lol

Francis Forever" by Mitski is good. I may like it best out of her "slower" songs so far, but they have all been good. My favorites have been when she rocks out.
Yeah I really like when she rocks out too. She probably has more songs on the slower side so when the rocking ones come they have even more impact. Francis Forever does end kind of loud and crunchy. She does that a lot- uses loud and and soft dynamics. That’s one of the first things that caught my attention with her music.

Interesting round. There were some loves and some likes, but while I adhered to the 2 minute rule there were also a lot of skips. Not every round is going to be perfect in this sorta thing though. Anyway, some increased competition at the top of the medal count. Also some tough squeezes. New hearts were rolled out those already in the count, but only space for 3. Maybe next round...

The 26's

Medal Stand
Gold The Doors- Break On Through To The Other Side, been waiting for this one- no doubter gold medal winner
Silver The Beach Boys- All Summer Long, criminal it's taken this long for them to find the stand
Bronze STP - Dead & Bloated, I'm not sure it gets much more 90's grunge than the first 4 bars of this song
Honorable mention - Slambovian and Setzer aren't the only ones to keep finding themselves with new hearts, but snubbed from the stand, but it seems to be a common theme to this point

Medal Count
Blue October - 2 gold, 1 bronze
The Doors - 1 gold, 1 silver
Tea Party - 1 gold, 1 bronze
STP - 1 gold, 1 bronze
Susanna Hoffs - 1 gold, 1 bronze
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 1 silver
Ronnie Dio - 1 silver
Belle & Sebastian - 1 silver
The Beach Boys - 1 silver
Mitski - 1 silver
Fanny - 1 bronze
Stray Cats - 1 bronze

25. Beggar Man
Album: Rock and Roll Survivors (1974)
Writer: Patti Quatro
Lead vocals: Patti Quatro

Patti Quatro wrote four songs for Rock and Roll Survivors, her only album with Fanny. Beggar Man is cut from very different cloth than the other three, and thus is the most interesting of the bunch. It is a contender for the funkiest track the band ever recorded, as Quatro's chicken-scratch guitar, Jean Millington's groovy bass and Brie Howard's syncopated drumming and conga playing set an insistent beat from the start. Adding further to the mood are Nickey Barclay's organ and the synths of James Newton Howard (Brie's then-husband). The brooding feel, which is congruent with Quatro's lyrics about feeling unsafe on the streets, makes the track sound like a War outtake. It's no "The World Is a Ghetto," of course, but it's a fascinating and unique contribution to the band.

If this song was ever played live, there is no surviving evidence of it. The one Quatro song that we know was in the live rotation -- Get Out of the Jungle, which was performed on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1974 and at the 2023 reunion shows -- is just OK.

At #24, one of the most Beatlesque tracks Fanny recorded, but not so Beatlesque that they couldn't perform it live.

STP #25 - Lounge Fly
Album - Purple (1994)

This is our first song on the list from their awesome second album, with plenty more to come.

I love the buildup in this song to an incredible back half, which is some of my favorite work of theirs. For those who follow the 2-minute rule and aren’t thrilled with the start here, I urge you to stick around for the full song.

Fun fact #1 - the band recorded this song in Prince’s Paisley Park studio while they were on tour. It one of the rare instances for the band where the song wasn’t pre-written but was created in-studio.

Fun fact #2 - the awesome guitar solo at the end was done by Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers. Never knew that before digging into things for my rankings.

Blue October-OZ-A Quiet Mind

I messed up earlier when we posted the “last ones out” list as I had changed a few last minute. So if you heard it earlier, sorry?

Another song exploring Justin’s bipolar and schizophrenia. AQM explores themes of inner turmoil, pain, and the search for solace or peace of mind. The lyrics reflect a struggle with emotional and mental distress, represented by a "slow strangle" and the desire for a quiet mind.

Give me strength to be kind
To combine all the good things in life that are so hard to find
But I have and I won't let them go like I do with my friends
My friends
Still hearing voices, from front, from behind
They're the reasons I choose, when to live, how to die
When to cast, when to reel
When to buy, when to steal
When to fiend for the friends that taught you
Being inappropriate will
Give me a quiet mind and I
I love you

Curtis MayfieldDon QuixoteP.S. I Love You, by Curtis Mayfield
Taking a break from some of the harder hitting soul and funk. This one is from Curtis Mayfield’s 1976 Give, Get, Take and Have album. This one was released in peak disco era. Mayfield kept this album a bit softer than some of his other albums (none of the heavy-hitting funk or political songs), but still tried to remain true to himself. It is a bit of a cross between soul and disco: it works in some places, but I would not put it up there with his classic albums.

“P.S. I Love You” just a smooth, gentle love ballad. In my write-up for #26, I teased “P.S. My #25 song coming up next featured in a movie that some posters had in their Mount Rushmore of comedy movies.” The “P.S.” was a bit of a hint for the song title — the movie in question is Superbad. This song plays at the end of the movie in the final scene as Jonah Hill’s character says goodbye to Michael Cera’s and goes down the escalator with Emma Stone’s, and then over the closing credits. See 5:15 here: Link

Would it have made my 31 without the Superbad connection? I don’t know. The connection does help bring a smile when I hear it; also, it was a chance to include a different of Mayfield’s sounds from an album that otherwise would not have had a representative make my cut. So, here it is.

At #24, going back to the harmonies of The Impressions with one of their more recognizable songs.

The Tea Party #25 - The Master & Margarita

First of five songs in the list from their 2001 album The Interzone Mantras, this song is less blues/world music and more just a pure rock song although I still hear a little Zeppelin influence here. I particularly like the drumming in this one.

Speaking of the Zeppelin influence, The Tea Party actually opened for Page & Plant on one of their tours. Page was quoted saying that The Tea Party picked up where Zeppelin left off and sound a lot like what Zeppelin would sound like if they were still active. Quite a compliment even assuming he was just being polite in an interview.

I need to keep up. Here are live performances by Andrew Bird for my most recent picks.

25. Departure/Ride My See-Saw (In Search of the Lost Chord, 1968)

The commercial and personal success of Days of Future Passed not only paved the way for spoken word pieces to make regular appearances on the band's albums, it also set the themed album approach the band would take moving forward; just as Days of Future Passed had been a musical exploration of a day in the life of an everyman, their next album, In Search of the Lost Chord, would also be a musical exploration, albeit of a different kind: the outer world and inner self-discovery. Ride My See-Saw is the lead track to the album, once again accompanied by a spoken piece in front of it. Unfortunately, the Spotify version does not include this, but it is on the Youtube version.

The song was written and sung by bassist John Lodge, the spoken part written by drummer Graeme Edge and spoken by Mike Pinder. Per Edge, Pinder's heavy smoking and whisky-drinking voice sounded better for the piece. The song reached #42 on the British charts and only #61 in the US. I saw them live in '87 and this was one of their closing songs; a highlight of which was Justin Hayward performing an extended guitar solo.

Up next, another track from this same album, plus how the Moodies planted their flag even more firmly into the counterculture/hippie movement.

P.S.: I will be mostly AFK over the weekend and my write-up for #24 will appear as a double-feature with the write-up for #23. I considered posting that write-up now but I fear I've said too much already.

The DoorsjwbThe End

One of their biggies. The legend is they got fired from the Whisky when Jim went through with the whole Oedipal section (Robby's book says that's not true. He says their contract simply ended a few days later). But whatever happened, it was pretty shocking lyrically for the time. Lots of stoner imagery and a dark, fatalistic mood made this (and the band in general) a favortite amongst soldiers in Vietnam. It's nearly 12 minutes long in the studio version (sorry for the longer playlist time), and when they played it live it often went much longer, with Jim improvising more in the middle.

This song was also responsible for a renewed interest in The Doors when Francis Ford Coppola used it in the opening of Apocalypse Now. Excellent choice by him, and really sets a great tone for the movie.

Sweet

#25 - Set Me Free

Producer - Phil Wainman
Writer - Andy Scott
Chart Positions - Album Track
Album - Sweet Fanny Adams/US Copy of Desolation Boulevard
Year - 1974
Lead Vocal - Brian Connolly
Steve Priest Vocal - Backing only
Notes - This is a rare early Sweet song only credited to Andy Scott. Most Sweet songs had all 4 members on the credit. This is one of the most revered tracks in their canon and unbelievably I had it off my original list. I should have it much higher in hindsight. Maybe as high as #12. A full on rock belter to show they weren’t no puppets of Chinn/Chapman.
Like a lot of the Glam Metal acts of the 80s, the Sweet weren’t the brightest bulbs and loved their Rock. The US version of Desolation Boulevard had a massive impact.

Heres some of the covers

Yes but I still feel a little ripped off, the classes were very short.

#25 - "Let's Groove"

This was EWF's last big, across-the-board hit.

It started here, but became more apparent afterwards, that they were beginning to chase trends instead of setting them. They made some truly embarrassing attempts at hip-hop later on. I've never been a fan of talk-box effects, though it's the main hook on this record and I suspect why it hit so big.

Negatives aside, the main part of the song is classic EWF. The singing and playing is top-notch. I reckon - given our demographic here - it's one of their 2 or 3 most popular records in 2024. Stop at an interstate rest stop, it's liable to be playing. Hip(per) dentists will have a channel that plays it. Weddings? Uh-huh. BBQs? Yep. It's played on about 70 different SXM channels. I eventually just had to give in to the record's awesomeness.

Next up: deeper cut from a great LP.

Belle and Sebastiankupcho1I Want The World To Stop

I Want The World To Stop is the first selection from 2010's Write About Love. In doing some research for the song, I came across a Pitchfork article that encapsulates Belle & Sebastian's sound.
Playing as a group has always been one of their strengths; for a band that has an instantly recognizable sound ..., they have no particularly distinctive instrumentalists, just a finely developed sense of how to support each other's timbres and rhythms.

Unfortunately, the review had nothing to say about the song I selected.
Anyway, I think I've probably ranked it a tad too low.

Let me step out of my shell
That's wrapped in sheets of milky winter disorder
Let me feel the air again, the talk of friends
The mind of someone my equal

The Slambovian Circus of DreamsYambagThe Great Unravel

Now that a handful of songs have been unveiled, here is Joziah speaking about one of his musical influences:

"The Americana influences have got to do with the fact that my father played all the classic Hank Williams, Hank Snow, all that from that era, and then moved right into the British Invasion. He would tape things off the radio and he'd learn the songs, and then teach 'em to me when I was a kid. So a lot of that Americana aspect of the band is real Americana. It’s not the glued-on stuff."

Next up on the same theme is a cover from arguably the bands biggest musical influence.

I saw Robert Plant with Alison Krauss last month at the Outlaw Festival. He sounded really good, and you could tell he was enjoying himself. He still likes to move to the music, and he liked to engage with the crowd. They did a few Led Zeppelin songs. I remember them doing Rock N Roll, The Battle of Evermore, Gallows Pole, and When the Levee Breaks. I enjoyed their set a lot.
