Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #13's have been posted. Link in OP. (17 Viewers)

If you didn't make it through Pip's essay the most interesting part to me was Dave Chappelle becoming his bass player.

Just rambling about this John 5 I've admired for 2 and half decades. my 25 yr old is in a serious relationship and fat. She thinks she needs to lose weight or lose him. Thankfully he's done nothing to make her feel that way or I'd have to beat him up if I can. She knows I'm devout about my daily walk in the desert and has decided to join me if I change my schedule to fit hers. Oh hell yeah. I love her company and her 9 month old werewolf (half cane corso half belgian malinois). This is a project I support. Kid was a starting 2 guard and league champ doubles player in HS. Got fat.

I have a regular route I've walked over thousand times, but there's a more scenic one I wanted to show her through basalt canyons with wild flowers and chuckwallas. Turns out I'd taken her there when she was a teen to fill the truck with lava rocks for free landscaping. Duh, my memory is so bad it's scary sometimes. We're just walking and talking. She's always interested in these music things we do. Has dozens of our playlists. I explain this one and how it's my first time doing a single artist. I ask her to guess who I chose. She thinks for half dozen steps and says, "Well, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and Sturgill Simpson have probably been done, sooooo, I dunno? You wouldn't do Miles. His songs are too long. Um, John 5?" How 'bout that? I yelled no way. But there it is. I made her endure his (and a few other guitar freaks) stuff many times.

Also, I was disappointed with what I found from his work with a huge artist but it turns out I missed a beauty. Literally a platinum selling beauty I'd never heard before. This is the 5th time I've found an a-lister since thinking I was done. Each time it deletes a Zombie or Manson. It would be a stretch, but I think possible to use 31 different artists with John 5 in common.

Not a stretch at all. Got it done in no time watching the NBA. Guess I been looking at this for over a month, so yeah, no problem. Pretty impressive. Ricky Martin and Rick Springfield didn't make it, but Dolly did.

Apropo de nada, I figured you city folk don't know what a chuckwalla is so I did the highlight and search google for thing to see what you might see if you did the same out of curiosity. First link had this basalt canyon. Mine's prettier. I'm bored.
Pretty area. You and your daughter walk amongst the lizards. 🦎

I was a lizard hunting fool as a kid. Chuckwallas were the top prize. Wonderful pets as reptiles go. Vegetarians, impressive size, love being held or just on your shoulder, hilarious dinosaur personality. Long lived and healthy. The males are in full color doing their mating rituals on the rocks. The females look fat and ready to breed. If you want one let me know.

Otis Redding

Last 10 out (continued)

41 - 6345789
40 - My Girl
39 - (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher
38- It’s Growing
37 - I Got the Will

36 - Let Me Be Good To You

From the King and Queen album recorded with Carla Thomas. An idea from producer to record a duet album with Carla Thomas was made to enhance both their careers. It was an effort to duplicate the success Marvin Gaye had with Mary Wells and Kim Weston. Otis simply said “Well, hey, you from Memphis, you from Tennessee, you can hang”
This song itself is quite sensual, reminiscent to others from the era. Surprisingly co written by Isaac Hayes, who was a staff writer for Stax records before breaking out on his own

35 - That’s What My Heart Needs

This beautiful understated song is buried on the debut album, Pain in My Heart, for Otis Redding. Would have loved to include it, but we can’t include them all.

34 - Ole Man Trouble

This track was chosen as the opening track to the breakthrough album Otis Blue. It was one if the first songs written by Otis for it and sets a wonderful tone for the album, of which we will see half a dozen tracks from.

33- White Christmas

We might have more on the last three later once my little surprise is revealed. Given what the surprise reveals its a bit of a shock this does not make the top 31. More well known as a Bing Crosby song, Otis offers something different and generally it works.

32 - Come to Me

It hurts my heart not to include this beautiful song. This was from the first album Otis recorded on the Stax sub label, Volt records. This track is also one of the very few not to have a horn section. Less is better for this song.
Ok.
Time to reveal my surprise.
When I picked Otis Redding as my artist, I was concerned I might miss songs or didn’t feel I could do the list justice.
But I wanted to do it.
In an effort to do something different here, I enlisted some help.
My rankings are a composite of rankings between myself, @krista4 and @Uruk-Hai
They both have kindly helped and advised and will chip in where they feel warranted.
Each of us will have their ranking assigned to each song. All of us had a different amount of songs ranked so scoring it appropriately was an exercise in maths.

Lets start with 41-32

Every time I walk into one of these M-AD countdown threads, I'm reminded of one of my favorite Peanuts comic strips:

Lucy: This is "Show and Tell" Day at school, isn't it? Rats! I forgot to bring something...Did you remember that this was "Show and Tell" Day, Linus?

Linus: Yes, I have a couple of things here to show the class...(reaches into large envelope) these are copies I've been making of some of the Dead Sea Scrolls...(shows one) See? This is a duplicate of a scroll of Isaiah chapters 38 to 40. It was made from seventeen pieces of sheepskin and found in a cave by a shepherd...(shows second one) Here I've made a copy of the earliest known fragment ever found. It's a portion of 1 Samuel 23:9-16. I'll try to explain to the class how these manuscripts have influenced modern scholars.

Lucy: Very interesting.

Linus: I thought it might be at least faintly appropriate to the season.

Lucy: Are you bringing something for "Show and Tell", Charlie Brown?

Charlie Brown: Well, I had a little red fire engine here (shows sad little toy), but I think maybe I'll just forget it.

Anyway, here's my little red fire engine:

Part I: The Babys Years (1976-1980, #31-19)

Dateline: England, 1974

Somewhere in the shadow of Windsor Castle, aspiring musician Michael Corby and aspiring music mogul Adrian Millar (whose musical acts under his auspices included another British band named Black Sabbath) meet and discuss putting together a band. They agree that Corby will be its centerpiece and begin the task of auditioning band members. The process was methodical to say the least, requiring all of 1975 to build and hone the following lineup of young hopefuls:

Michael Corby - Keyboards and guitar
Wally Stocker - Guitar
Tony Brock - Drums, lead vocals
John Waite - Bass, lead vocals

Fun fact for you: one musician who auditioned but was turned down was Lucas Fox, who went on to become a founding member of Motorhead.

This lineup released their first album in December of 1976 and remained stable for three more years and three more albums, until original centerpiece Corby and producer Millar were fired by the band's label. Corby was replaced by American Jonathan Cain, and fellow American bassist Ricky Phillips was added, leaving Waite to focus entirely on vocals. This revamped lineup recorded two albums in 1980 and then Cain left to join Journey while Waite left to begin a solo career. In 2021, Waite was interviewed by radio talk show host Steve Trevelise of New Jersey 101.5 and recalled:

We were on the road somewhere in the middle of America (editor's note: Cincinnati) and we got the news he (editor's note 2: John Lennon) died, and it was like a nightmare, it was just unbelievable. We went back on stage for the encore and did 'Drive My Car' because we knew it. And I announced what had happened but nobody really believed me.

The next night I was really angry. I was kicking s**t, and everybody was just blown out and I spun around on stage, probably after kicking something and tore all the cartilage in my knee and went down like a sack of potatoes.

And the next night we tried to continue the tour, but I couldn't do it. I had collapsed, it was really painful. So they flew me back to New York, to Lennox Hill hospital, got my knee sorted out and went back to England and that was the end of that. But I think it was punctuated by John's passing. It was a crisis, you know. Everything just ended and a new page was turned. We had to learn to live in a different world.

Other band members have slightly different versions of the story; while the timeline matches up (still the day after Lennon's death), others claim that a fan pulled him off the stage, causing the knee injury. Despite the different versions of what happened, there does appear to be consensus that they all agreed they had reached the end of the road.

Corby attempted to reunite the original lineup in 2003 but the others weren't interested; in the interim, Brock went on to drum for Rod Stewart and also tried his hand at producing with Australians Jimmy Barnes and Keith Urban. Stocker also played with Rod Stewart and spent a short time with Air Supply, while also getting one of the cringiest cameos in the entire decade of the 1980s (starting at 1:35 of the link). In 2013, Stocker and Brock re-formed the band with 2 new members, released an album in 2014 and have toured ever since.

I was introduced to this band by way of two of my friends, John and Steve, probably around the time the last Babys albums had been released. John and Steve both were (are) older than me, by 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years respectively, making them 'worldly' in my eyes. The one thing that Steve was more :nerd: about than anyone else I knew was music and he would go on to spend his freshman year at Vanderbilt as a DJ on their station before coming home and finishing his education at Maryland. My guess is that The Babys were just different enough to have caught his ear and they became part of the rotation of music we listened to when we hung out playing video games or the early versions of the game that started geekdom down the road to the mainstream of society: Dungeons and Dragons.

Even though I didn't know about them until the late/dying stages of their career, their active years of '76-80 neatly matched one of the happier eras of my life, from ages 10/11-14/15. Personal bookends to that period would roughly include my introduction to Pong on one end and learning about John Lennon's death with my first ever girlfriend on the other.

TRIGGER WARNING: These first 12 picks in part cover the time in my life that makes me feel the most nostalgic; comparisons to the TV show The Wonder Years (the 80s version) are entirely accidental. Nonetheless, I hope this group will help round out your collections of 70's era M-AD alumni. :bye:

I think I’ve mentioned before in these threads that my son’s guitar teacher’s brother-in-law is the “John Waite” in the current version of the Babys.

When they were younger, guitar teacher would tell BIL that he looked like Waite, to which the response was always “don’t be ridiculous.”

Could be worse; they could have said he looks like Belinda Carlisle.

Are you gonna mail me a lizard? When I lived in Florida, one of my roommates had a pet iguana named Dude. When the roommate moved out he left Dude behind. I would have kept him, but we had cats, and I didn't want to chaperone all the time, plus Dude always watched me, and it freaked me out a bit. I liked the fella, though. Anyway, one of my friends who taught school wanted him, so Dude ended up in a good home.
I figure the iguana would have ruled the roost. A friend of mine had a cat and an iguana. One tail whip from the lizard, and that cat never saw it again. It would walk around the lizard while completely denying its presence. It was fun to watch.

Are you gonna mail me a lizard?
Yes but.

I've never mailed someone a lizard. Youtube will teach me though. Also, they thrive here but do poorly in humidity over 30%, so you have to create or purchase an enclosure that provides a Mojave Desert environment. It's done with a hot rock and dehumidification. If you're serious we should talk in PMs. I'll take my fishing pole on the walk today and see if I can catch one. It's been a long time since I tried. Wild adults are not great pets. They seek freedom. I just wanna try and catch one. If I send one, it needs to be a month or so old. That age is happily domesticated.

They can be ornery. We have an iguana species here called a leopard lizard. My bro added one to his enclosure featuring other local species. Took the leopard a few hours to assess his new digs and he proceeded to eat two and murder two more. Only the horned toad survived. Herbivores are the reptiles to own. Chuckwallas thrive on romaine lettuce.

While it's kind of cool and unique to have a solid list of 31 different artists with john 5 in common, it's causing me some distress. It's mostly because David Lee Roth and John with his trio the Creatures. There's 3 of each I want on my list. Two Motleys too. Cutting Manson and Zombie to just one is doable but a poor representation of John's career. 16 years with Zombie. The glory years with Manson. Some pretty solid badxxx goth and horror metal to eliminate. Maybe I just add a couple more and post the 31 artist list when we finish up?

This Cellist Tina Guo is just vaguely familiar to me but her wiki is massive. Big star. This never sniffed my list but what the heck, enjoy some Sabbath.

John and Tina shred Iron Man.

It's you list so you can present it how you'd like, but I would prefer the 31 best songs instead of forcing songs in to get to 31 different artists.

Dude wasn't full grown yet, but he could be feisty when the cats approached him. They left him alone for the most part, except one of the cats shadowed him. Doug's (Dude's owner) departure was stressful enough, and I didn't really want a pet iguana, and neither did the other roommate, and I had a friend that very much wanted him. It worked out. We didn't know Doug that well when he moved in. He was a friend of my good friend's husband, and he needed somewhere to live, and we had an extra room. I had met Doug a couple times prior to him moving in. Anyway, it turned out he had a really bad drug problem. His parents ended up getting him, and putting him in a drug rehab in another state. His parents didn't care that Doug owed so many people money, had stolen money, etc. They left his damage for others to have to deal with. I hope he ended up getting himself straightened out. He stole from me and told me lies, but I saw some goodness in him. We were all in our 20s at this time, and I'd like to think he got clean and is doing well. I wonder if he ever thinks of Dude.

I don't know wth is going on around here but I just got a pm and thought simey really wants a lizard. Nope. I got Binky's Doobie Bros list. I'm a big fan and so tempted to see if he got #1 right. This is where being raised by my military dad comes in handy. I will not look. He scares me from the grave. Tests like this were big to him. Won't let you down, pops!

Also, interested in why his youtube links did that. Wanna make sure mine don't.

I'm not in the market for a Chuckwalla right now, but thank you for the offer. It is interesting learning about them. If you catch one take pictures and share with the class.

While it's kind of cool and unique to have a solid list of 31 different artists with john 5 in common, it's causing me some distress.
It's you list so you can present it how you'd like, but I would prefer the 31 best songs instead of forcing songs in to get to 31 different artists.
I agree but.

Replacing a Zombie with an Adler (Guns N' Roses drummer) is subjective as to which is the better song. There's a handful of songs that I wanted up top from the start for various reasons, but from about 11 down, to me anyway, there was a 40+ song tie. So I featured bands where he was a member rather than being a studio hire. Then new songs were discovered and swapping that Adler track to make unique list for a Zombie didn't reduce the quality, imo. Maybe the Steve Perry, Alice Cooper and Dolly Parton are downgrades. I'd guess some would think so, some would like them better.

I'm going fishing for chuckwallas. The desert clears my head. I hope someone sees this old dude walking the arid desert with a fishing pole. No water round here for 60 miles. In case any are worried about lizard cruelty, no hooks are used when fishing for lizards.

Eephus may be interested to know that today’s WXPN lunch break theme was single-named artists in honor of Adele’s birthday.

I checked out the playlist: 5 men, 3 women (two of whom made my countdown with the other (Enya) in the longlist).

I listened to the only song I was unfamiliar with by singer/songwriter Tamino who looks like a Belgian Jeff Buckley. It's a lovely duet with Mitski that I enjoyed very much.

After taking a break from this for a day or two, I revisited my rankings. And actually paid attention that I had a couple of bad links. So that's a good excuse to resubmit. A little changed. Two songs in, two songs out. A bit of rearranging of the deck chairs. As long as I didn't mess this version up, I'm gonna force myself to be done. I know the Main 31 is missing some beloved songs, but there's only so much room.

Last Five 10 out
1 song per album max. Lower numbers were toughest cuts except for #41.
41: The Ecstasy Of Gold (S&M). Technically, Metallica doesn't perform on this song, making it an odd inclusion. Still, Metallica's used this song as an intro for live shows since (at least?) Kill 'Em All. Given that this will be 31-1 (or 41-1), it fits too well here.
40. Cyanide (Death Magnetic). Hard-charging, high-charted (for what THAT's worth) song that I couldn't find room for.
39. The Memory Remains (Reload) .That "la da da" section is etched in memory (ha?), even if reference to a song I'll talk about later.
38. Whiskey In The Jar (Garage, Inc.). This and their version of "Stone Cold Crazy" were close.
37. Shadows Follow (72 Seasons). I feel like if I had more history/nostalgia behind this, it would've made it.
36/35. Spit Out The Bone (Hardwired...) ; Jump In The Fire (Kill 'Em all). Decades apart, these two feel like they belong on the same album.
34. Harvester of Sorrow (AFJA). This was in the original version, so certainly its ranking could depend on mood.
33. The Call of Ktulu (Ride the Lightning). A song associated with Cliff, though equal parts Mustaine. S&M version was a consideration too.
32. Sad But True (Metallica). It became obvious either this or a song I'll get to wasn't going to make it. Depressing yet factual.
Nice choices! I am with you that Sad But True, despite getting a lot of run on MTV and radio, would not make my Top 31. I love Whisky in the Jar, would think it might make mine, but can't say for sure without actually listing out songs. Looking forward to this one!

Like what?

oh **** @Uruk-Hai ...they're all Billy Joel!!!!
I haven't turned in my list yet, so that isn't my string of songs. I was going to submit both YouTube and Spotify links, but I guess I will just do Spotify if the YouTube links aren't working correctly when done that way. I'll just post a YouTube link old style in each round for each song introduction. I don't think Uruk has Spotify, but I could be wrong.
