City and Colour
Dallas Michael John Albert Green is a Canadian singer-songwriter. His parents named him after the Phillies manager at the time because his dad bet on them in the World Series and they won. He started playing piano at the age of 8 and began writing music at 12. His inspiration to pursue a musical career came from Alice in Chains. Dirt was the first album he bought with his own money. His first band was Helicon Blue. After they broke up, he co-founded Alexisonfire. He named the band after a show on the Discovery Channel about a contortionist. City and Colour was a side project at the time and he released songs on the interwebs. Eventually, Alexisonfire broke up and he focused on City and Colour. He also collaborated with P!nk under the band name You+Me. He has been nominated for 12 JUNO awards and won 3. He also received the national achievement award from SOCAN which is a songwriting award.
I have seen him live 3 times. I'm a big fan of lyrics and his songwriting is phenomenal. His music helped me through a very dark time in life. His lyrics felt like they had been taken directly from my being and that provided a little light in the dark, a rope to cling onto. I feel like all of you are going to get front seat view of my psyche.

To be clear, and I DO expect you all to remember this, I submitted to JML only a definitive #1-4. Then I had the rest in groupings: 5-8 in any order,
9-14 in any order, 15-21 in any order, 22-27 in any order, and 28-31 in any order. So other than #1-4, these are just approximately where I'd put them.

this is predominantly a love letter to late 90's early 00's trance. if corsten did not do the track himself, he remixed it. i've captured anything eligible i think.

I submitted a playlist for Cornershop. I didn't have time to rank the songs so I listed them chronologically.
That order does highlight how the band morphed pretty significantly from album to album over a 28 year/9 album career. Like I said before, I was only super familiar with their breakthrough album from '97. I was pleasantly surprised by much of their other catalogue.

My first spin of the week wasn't on Spotify when it first came out in the UK in March but it showed up today AllMusic's release report and voila.
It's the self titled debut from a supertrio consisting of Bernard Butler from Suede, James Grant from Love & Money and Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub. CSN and The Thorns are obvious points of reference with the mixture of multiple songwriters, vocal harmonies and mostly acoustic picking. It's not going to take the music business by storm but it's a lovely little record.

Guys, as I mentioned before, something has changed with the form and/or the message board software.
A simple cut and paste which I've always done in the past just doesn't always display the songs as nicely as before. And I don't know why. I've played around with it a ton to no avail,
And now a new issue. When I cut and paste all the l#31' to KP, so he can create the Spotify list, the board now counts each character of code and you can't make a post that has more than 10,000 characters. so FML. LOL
It did come through well enough to KP to make a song list.
I'll keep trying other ways...

This post I didn't have to. CTL-V and it came out fine.
Both are from Google sheets and I don't understand why it worked once, and didn't the other time. So Bizarre. Anyone have any thoughts?

So I broke it up into three groups of 9, and It seemed to work. (it worked because each post was under 10,000 characters)
In MB "dark" mode, the song title you typed in on Line 1 of each song, doesn't show well at all. It does show ok in "light" mode.
Not a huge deal to me as we can see the song titles in the Spotify Links. (maybe this will lead to only posting the song links in the future?)

Notable Covers - Barbara Lynn's 1966 version of "You Left the Water Running" reached #42 on Billboard's Top Selling R&B Singles chart. The song has been recorded by many other artists, including Wilson Pickett, Don Varner (1967), Billy Young, Maurice & Mac, Armazing Rhythm Aces, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Bobby Hatfield, James & Bobby Purify, Ken Boothe ( who cut a Rocksteady version ) and Huey Lewis and the News (on Four Chords & Several Years Ago (1994)), Billy Price & The Keystone Rhythm Band (1980).
Comments - Redding was visiting FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, when studio owner Rick Hall requested Redding help them with an upcoming session. Wilson Pickett was to record "You Left the Water Running", and Hall wished for Redding to record a demo to assist with the production. A simple recording was made and Redding made some overdub additions, and Pickett made his recording similar to Redding's version.

The premise is straight forward and felt by many in long term relationships where Caro is missing that

31. Looking for Love (The Babys, 1976)
Recorded in Canada and released in December of 1976, The Babys' eponymous first album contained mostly songs written collaboratively by the entire group. Looking for Love is the first song on the first side, serving as their introduction to the world. On one hand, it's a product of its time, a power ballad with a lot of jamming, and on the other, it's a product of its time with noticeable overproduction on the effects, particularly the vocals.
While I couldn't find anything definitive regarding how long it took to write and record the material, I think it's fair to say that they probably had a sense of optimism while they were in the studio, based on the current state of the charts; top singles in the months leading up the album's release included Abba's Dancing Queen, Dutch pop band Pussycat's Mississippi (inspired by the Bee Gees song Massachusetts), Disco Duck, A Fifth of Beethoven, Chicago's If You Leave Me Now and Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night. While a few of these are memorable, none really reached out to the same audience The Babys seemed to be aiming for, and the other newbies on the music scene like Elvis Costello, The Jam, The Clash, The Cure, The Damned, Generation X and Madness weren't in their league, either.

I certainly will be including some of their ballads as well, but this is a pretty good example of what you will find with a good chunk of The GAP Band selections — nothing deep; just some feel-good funkiness with a bass line that makes you want to dance.

Besides my own, I think I know about 3 others (Pumpkins, Clapton, Metallica), so lots of new music to absorb.

Both of mine are this way. It seems the more I dig the music and more familiar I am with it, the less likely I am to try to rank them 31-1. Both of PUTS and Beck are album focused and I used that for my order of playlist after awhile. I think both playlists flow very well as you listen to them, especially PUTS, and that is what I focused on since I listen to them a lot before and after.
People Under the Stairs:
Songs 31 - 20 are in random order of songs I wanted to highlight for various reasons. I did force myself to pick out 2 personal favorites from each of the main 9 albums, so
Songs 19 - 1 are in album release order x2. I do my #2 songs in album release order, then my #1 songs from each album that way.
It makes way more sense as a completed playlist, and it allowed me to have the bookends to the playlist that I wanted. For me it had the perfect intro and exit songs this way.
Beck:
Songs 31 - 11 are in even more random order. Mostly I just tried to spread out the albums and I started with a couple more known songs as good intros.
Songs 10-1 are my favorite songs from each of the 10 albums. This the order is by my album rank, so I will be counting down my top 10 Beck albums from 10-1.

In 1966, Otis Redding was THE ascending star in southern soul music. Rick Hall had giant gonads to ask Redding to record a demo at that time, but Rick Hall had giant gonads about most everything he did. I'm assuming a few dollars changed hands (Otis liked his money). Next Up - A cover of a song from the 1940s
This is one of those songs that everyone covers who bases their sound in 1960s country and/or soul (which are the same genre). I've heard countless bar bands play it. It's just one of those foundational songs that people of my generation know from somewhere.

First, about the song title. Arthur Lee has several really long song titles in his catalog that appear to include two thoughts separated by "and" or "or". I presume the "or" ones are because he came up with two titles and couldn't choose between them. We will see more examples of this, but this one is the longest title on my list.
This is the only song to make my top 31 that I had not heard before starting this exercise. It boasts fierce, Hendrix-style riffs and doesn't sound out of place with the "boogie rock" of the early '70s. Lee turns in a gritty, impassioned vocal that conveys frustration and longing, and even engages in some Robert Plant-isms toward the end.
Lee/Love setlist records are spotty, but this song seems to have appeared somewhat regularly in early '70s sets, sometimes opening a show.

This is his first single as a recording artist (1966). As mentioned in the introduction, his earlier songs were recorded by others, which didn't really change. He's been covered a lot. It appeared on his first album, the marvelously titled The Feel Of Neil Diamond. What the heck? What were they thinking? It reached 55 on the charts in '66 and charted 21 in 1970. Like a lot of his songs, it is about himself, although it took him a while to realise it.
It was covered by Chris Isaak in 1993.
My list is arranged in the "some other way" category. It is largely chronological; but for reasons that will become obvious later, that wasn't always the best way to go.

Prelude / Angry Young Man 
Billy wrote this song for his 1976 album Turnstiles. The album marks when he returned to New York after living in Los Angeles for three years. He originally used some of Elton John's band to record this album in Colorado, and it was produced by Chicago's producer Guercio at the time, but the finished product wasn't what he wanted. He decided to scratch that recording, and produce the album himself in NY using his touring band for the first time on a studio album. It's one of my favorite albums by him.
He kicks off a lot of his concerts with "Prelude / Angry Young Man" because of its energy, and it gives the sound man time to adjust everything before the vocals come in. It starts out with a furious pounding on the piano, which Billy said his goal is to simulate the drum part in the song "Wipe Out" by The Safaris with the sound. It's a good way for him to get his fingers warmed up for this countdown.
And there's always a place for the angry young man,
With his fist in the air
and his head in the sand.
And he's never been able to learn from mistakes,
So he can't understand why his heart always breaks.
But his honor is pure and his courage as well,
And he's fair and he's true and he's boring as hell
And he'll go to the grave as an angry old man.
